I will always stand by the first RE movie being great. I think not including any characters from the game was a good move... because look at what happened once they did. All canon events completely out the window 😅 Also a lot of people seem to forget that Milla and Paul didn't get married until about the 3rd film lol

This movie was actually my first exposure to the franchise (born in 98,) followed shortly after by Resi 4. And only by watching your video have I noticed a throughline between the two in that theyre both more schlocky action compared to previous mainline. Very cool Great video!

Finally I can watched this after work. I really enjoyed this video game movie adaptation review thing, especially on how you deepdived into the history and the behind-the-scenes. I don't really have anything more to say about the film, but I do want more videos like this. I think it would also be far more entertaining if you do it like that Steve Rambo's Cockpit review with CaptainPsychopath.

cool video, for some reason the first and second film are a muddled mess in my mind. It's interesting to see how the video game adaptation genre and risen and fallen over the years, I forgot that the streaming series was a thing until you brought it up.

Nice video, I think the first three RE movies are entirely watchable, with the first one being the strongest and most competent, then the rest subsequently getting weaker. I'd like to hear your opinion on the Doom movie. Thats a movie I remember everyone dumping on when it came out, including me, but now after re-watching it recently I kind of dig it, its dumb but it has its moments. Oh and btw, its not Jojovich -its Jovovich 17:17 XD

I see that Spaced episode! Not many know about that episode and it’s spark for Shaun of the dead, glad to see it. Oh and also that Lollipop chainsaw poster has me giddy for this remaster!

I knew about the stuff with romero, but not the background with michelle rodriguez and mila playing the games before making the movie, so that was cool to hear. This might be the best vid I’ve seen covering the first resident evil movie and actually has me watching seeing it again. It’s nice actually seeing someone talk about the film and bring up/acknowledge the films homages and anderson’s prior films. The first RE movie I thought wasn’t bad. It felt like it had something to it and did a decent job at being a stand alone work, something the later films last track of real fast. The general look and marilyn manson’s score are what I remember most about it and still stands for me as it’s best qualities(Also Mila looked great in this). I feel the movie is sort kinda charming in how much of an action film time capsule it is, feeling in line with stuff like underworld, the tomb raider films, etc

I'm with you on this one. I like the Resident Evil movies. When the first one came out, I was still a kid and did not have much of a developed taste in movies, hence I loved it very much. Nowadays I definitly wouldn't call any of the movies great, but I can still enjoy them and apreciate them for what they are. Still, I have to wonder, what could have been, if Romero had directed it and made a more faithful adaptation. Btw: Interesting detail about that last shot. I did not know that but Anderson was 100% right to convince the studio to invest so much in such a short scene. It definitly hyped me up for a sequel.

The commentary track for this movie was hilarious. It was Paul trying to seriously describe the filmmaking process while Mila Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez did not care and just made jokes and flirted with each other the majority of the time. The world was a better place when bad movies had commentary tracks.

Day of the Dead is the best Romero zombie flick. It's such a shame that it seems forgotten and still remains locked in standard definition.

Of course the first Resident Evil film is a good fun film.

The first movie was great. I think, even though it's an action movie, it actually captured the mood of first RE game. Hive makes you feel claustrophobic, main heroes wasted all of their ammunition in the shootout in the warehouse and the clock is ticking. The looming threat of Red Queen makes you feel being watched. And the best part was, that there were no game canon characters. I agree that RE games are hard to adapt 1:1 as a movie, because they are sometimes too goofy and doesn't really make sense. But with this new story branch Anderson could've done pretty much anything. And he did, Unfortunately. I think that the main catalist for that tone switch was Mila. I've read somwhere that during of making the first movie, she wanted more screen time and action scenes, less damsel in distress and more of a wall running powerhouse. So she "discussed" it with Anderson a lot. And during those sessions they started dating. So, it's my speculation but, I think that she influenced some of his decision making in the second movie, which was still at least bearable. The rest was shite par excellence. And then adding game characters only makes it worse. Jill and later Wesker were fine, but the rest was catastrophe. Leon, Chris, Claire, completely out of their character, not even looking like them. But the worst were Ada and Barry. I think that after the third movie, Anderson started adding canon caracters to the mix only to bait nostalgia and cover the fact that the story was so f*cking awfull mess. I can't even fathom how those movies could have made so much money. Great video as always Hiki!

Definitely would like to see this as a series with maybe even the animated films being discussed later as I felt the first two animated films were pretty decent.

We fucking loved these movies with my dad. I'd say most Euro kids, which are now around 30, had a huge crush on Mila, especially due to this fucking movie (and 5th element). Vividly remember playing RESI 3 on PC with my brother every night, my dad then once coming home with a VHS of the Resi movie.

5:19 I think it's pretty well understood at this point that the Paul W.S. Anderson "Resident Evil" movies exist within their own universe, completely separate from the video games. Capcom just took certain elements from the movies that they liked, and incorporated them into the game universe, like the Red Queen for instance. But, the games are not canon with the movies, and vis versa.

Doom is like a lesser John Carpenter movie that never got made. If you ever cover other game movies I’d definitely like to see that one as I think it’s actually pretty okay. The new 4k UHD restoration does wonders for its presentation.

I’d always heard these films were terrible, but at least this first one seems like it had some interesting ideas. Its on my list to check out now

I freaking adore these films and NO ONE can ever make me hate them. IDK why people are so pressed when you can consider them as a separate RE-verse... I just love rewatching these films and it'sthanks to them that I became a RE die hard fan. 💝💯 P.S: The laser corridor was also present in the UMBRELLA CHRONICLES game hehe 🤭

I really liked the first 2 movies. Especially RE:Apocalypse. They did my girl Jill gewd in that one. And yea I wish they would have gone with more practical effects for the licker. I'm so glad they made a costume for Nemesis in the sequel.

I don't know how I got my wires crossed but I thought Event Horizon was by Guillermo del Toro. I first watched it after it being mentioned by the director of Dead Space.

I think it helped detaching the games from the (first 3) movies mentally to enjoy them. Only played the first 2 games - completely agree with the points about challenges in creating a plot out of something slow and subtle that people would get sucked into. I agree with others who say the atmosphere of the first 2 movies was great (the audio was iconic), a little shallow in the plot department, but watchable (some really standout visuals) and great performances (esp Mila lol she does a lot even with her eyes). For me, the 3rd movie is probably the strongest overall but I have always had a weakness for a more scifi plot (Mila getting powers etc) and I loved where it seemed to be going (if you say 1-3 had a theme of 'Alice making sense of the new world she's found herself in and trying to fix things', it did flow quite well). The characters don't really 'grow' (the survivors are already strong/smart) but 3 has a few plot routes that give hope that there might be a way out of a postapocalyptic hellhole world. Feels like a well directed zombie movie on its own. Then when Afterlife was released, I was gutted at how it seemed to have given up on anything it had setup beforehand ...and how flatout terrible it was. Some of the scenes seemed to be just there for an excuse to promote 3D glasses in cinema. Hollow, pointless stuff. Plot wise, it was too obvious they didn't know what to do with Mila being too powerful now, so of course they had to nerf her asap and dither the others around. Last 2 movies were a bit better and tied the ending up fairly well at the end once you cut through the thick of it, but by that point they were far too wrapped up with 'what should we put in from the latest games that people will recognise' including the definitely-not-inspired-by-pyramid-head. C'est la vie!

That's funny - I just rewatched this yesterday. I didn't hate it but the series got dumber/less accurate as it went along. The lab intro was really good though. Curious what you think about RE: Welcome to Racoon City.

a not so fun fact my first encounter with re and silent hill were the movies and when i saw the games at a friends house in the late 2000s i thought they were Licensed crap

Excellent review, that elevator scene gave me nightmares as a kid, but I agree, the rest of the film wasn’t that scary. I will give the first sequel props for how good Nemesis looked, that’s the only good thing about that movie. I’ve watched all the movies and none of them can hold a candle to the first instalment.

I liked these films. And man if I were W.S Anderson I'd also dedicate my career to filming movies about my Hotwife Milla Jovovich. And while I wouldn't say the films were intending to be faithful to the plot and atmosphere of the games, they absolutely nailed the schlocky sci fi tone of the originals with that first movie. Blasting monsters, just like that dude on the boxart of RE1. But perhaps the japanese game devs liked it too much and that's how we got a steep genre shift during the 2000s into Zombie-Espionage-Thriller that lasted from Resident Evil 0 all the way to RE6. Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles also did the same Laser Hallway which looks even closer to the movie version.

There was so much hope after the first Resident Evil. Then each movie was worst than the next. Its horrible what they did to JIll in RE Apocalypse and each main character after that.

Been down with RE since my father brought home a copy of re2 in 1998. I know the movies get hate, but they have some redeeming qualities, even the later entries. Shut your brain off and enjoy
