I'm honestly surprised he went through that whole speech without once mentioning the tunnel. Not disappointed, just surprised.

We were ROBBED of that happening…

I was honestly expecting MatPat to rip the show to shreds like most other normies who hate Thomas, and turn off the video after a few seconds feeling upset, but he actually showed a surprising level of genuine love and respect for Thomas.

I'm surprised. I expected the regular "Sir Topham Hatt is an evil dictator. Henry dies in the tunnel" stuff but Matpat clearly shows a better understanding of Sodor. I'd love to see a theory on either the lore of the island, or maybe calculating how much each crash costs

You may laugh or scoff at Matthew, but this is basically how Sir Topham Hatt feels at the end of every episode.

The first Thomas theory that didn’t call Topham a ruthless dictator or the engines as humans? And instead it sounds like a theory on the commentary of working environments on railways? Would have loved to see that. Would have been a breath of fresh air from all the far gone from planet Earth slave theories Thomas has surrounding it.

“Incredibly dangerous and horrifically unsafe and awful for the efficiency of the transportation system.” As much as a Thomas fan myself. That quote, Matpat’s lore about Thomas & Friends is really but heavily related in a reality way, by basically give it out related the U.S. Railroads is derails its transportation and the economy, this theory man deserves the annual reward. MatPat is a true legend of lore.

Matpat shows better respect to Thomas than Mattel or Lacey Gacha do.

I like how they didn’t jump to the “evil science dictator fat controller” theories and instead took a realistic approach and tried connecting it to the supply chain issues, wish matpat had gotten to this 😔

I once said before that if MattPat didn’t do a film theory on TTTE before he retired I wouldn’t miss him.

The Sodor railway was a disaster that should have been shut down many times. The number of incidents they had was borderline criminal.

This is legitimately a very valid critique, particularly of the later seasons. It is an issue that Rev. Wilbert Awdry himself had with the series later on, as it was very important to him, and for more-or-less for David Mitton as well, that they maintain proper railway conduct and procedure, even for the smallest of details. Unsuprisingly, the big companies who pushed the show to put their main focus on ensuring merchandise sales didn't have any of this passion, abd it shows. Even characters like Bill and Ben have this lighthearted characterization to accidents in season/series 3 though, so it wasn't like this wasn't an issue earlier on.

I'm glad he didn't go with the common theories, like how the engines are 'slaves', or how they are actually humans inside or something like that, but went for an actual realistic approach.

Wish he did a theory, would have opened up some people to see the that we love Thomas for mature reasons. Why are we ALWAYS robbed that? All we need is big influencer to talk positive about Thomas and BAM. Recognition.

I’m happy he doesn’t believe in the theory that Sir Topham Hatt is the villain of Thomas. I remember there’s another GTLive clip where he talks about Thomas and he had a lot of nice things to say about Sir Topham Hatt. It’s sad he never got around to doing a Thomas theory because I think it would’ve been refreshing to hear a Thomas theory that isn’t a morbid explanation of how the trains are alive or bashing Sir Topham Hatt.

There is some crazy lore drops in Thomas, like the constant threat of being scrapped.

MatPat may not be on the Theorists channels anymore but I think it would be interesting to see a Film Theory on Thomas & Friends if & only if there's actual research put into it, like contacting Awdry Lore people, forming something that isn't just "Fat Controller might be evil, or trains are possibly evil" but actually like "Oh hey maybe there's something to be said about the safety record and who actually is a problem on Sodor".

I think his two main topics he talked about weren’t very good, but he also said he hasn’t watched the show in forever. First thing: The constant crashes. He made it sound as though the engines purposely crashed or purposely messed up. The times where an engine purposely messes up don’t have nearly as dangerous consequences as when they actually have an accident. The second thing: Some characters just fucking around and not caring about work. All of the characters are more than meets the eye. Like Bill and Ben are twins who argue and can’t get along, but they can be very efficient when they get along and they’re both really good tricksters. Thomas and Percy have more crashes early on because they’re younger, so it makes sense that they would be more accident prone. When he said they are engines and they should just do work and go back to their sheds, he sounded more like a dictator than Sir Topham Hatt does when the media talks about him😂

I always wondered why there were real humans in the first Thomas movie (Magic Railroad) I didn’t know that the whole shining time station bit existed, and I watched Thomas religiously. I wonder how we never crossed paths

If the engines did their job, there would be no show. The whole point is that they do mess up, and have to learn a lesson.

If I drank a shot each time Matpat said "train" instead of "engine." Or said an incorrect term like "boxcar" instead of "brake van."

If anyone thinks Thomas is dark, think about what happens to steam engines who don’t live on Sodor, and that the two diesels Arry and Bert in the earlier series actively hunted steam engines for scrapping

Dark lore of Thomas and freinds: There's none. The Trains DON'T have control over the crashes. mostly the trucks or a stupid choice.

the problem with mat pats theory is that he doesn't realize the episodes show the engines learning a lesson. You realize that the engines in the show arent perfect and they screw up like how us humans can. I think the only bad thing about it is the engines dont relize most of the time that how big it can cause if the screw up or prank people and etc.

I think the issue is, he’s always been into a dark truth so much that he’s starting to give the other stuff less attention. Like just read the railway series or read the other books on it there’s plenty to talk about. (Edit) Not to mention those oodles and oodles and oodles of fan content out there just waiting to be torn apart for lore.

I had wanted to make a theory video on whether or not the railways of Sodor are privatized, and I stopped because I wasn't sure that having a flag meant that it's separate from the UK or not and what flags in general mean, but Mat's idea seems like more fun and I wish he could have made it.

Something tells me it would be too hard to dissect the show. Thomas has a lot of lore behind it, but the sentience isn’t really explained. I think it has something to with the train being built giving it sentience. Also the authoritarian world makes sense since real railways were dependent on punctuality an d efficient transit.
