In this video Daniel and Mick explore some basic concepts around getting a better solo tone.
What is a better solo tone? Obviously it’s an extremely subjective topic once you bring personal likes/dislikes into play, but the one thing on which we can all surely agree is that as a very basic start point, a good solo tone begins with ‘one that can be heard’.
By contrast a ‘bad’ solo tone is one that can’t be heard, and there are many of us who have been in that situation where you step on the next pedal to make your tone soar… only to find that it just crashes! That is where we begin.
Throughout the video we touch on the areas of gain, EQ and relative wetness of your effects in the context of being heard for that all important solo.
Interesting points of go-to bits
• What is a ‘good’ solo tone? 2:05
• Thoughts on gain and solo tones: 3:25
• Amps we’re using today: 4:57
• Midrange, gain and being heard (with Angry Charlie V3): 8:53
• How more gain can impact on the dynamics of your playing: 14:01

• Angry Charlie after Carpe Diem: 19:27
• Zen Drive and mid frequencies: 23:00
• Zen Drive & Angry Charlie 25:45
• EQ pedal thoughts: 27:15
• Delay time basics and solo tones - short or long? 29:29
• Reverb basics and solo tones: 38:08
• Compression and clean tones: 40:42

I can't think of a better way to spend a few minutes on Christmas Day than watching a replay from my favorite RU-vid channel - That Pedal Show. I'd say the SM57 is a "regular people" mic. It's £85, that's not a lot of money for an industry standard microphone. Check out Spectre Sound Studios on micing techniques. Glenn can be a bit blunt but he knows what he's talking about.

Great point about the epic tone setting that is so awesome at home disappears in a band setting because you have thrown out all your mids, and that's the only area in which you can be heard against bass & cymbals. It's not volume, it's spectrum.

Interesting observation I've made over the last 34 years of playing in bands. The mid boosting, in my opinion, is more effective in bigger bands with a rhythm guitar player and a keyboard. However, in a trio setup, (bass, drums, and guitar), the mid boosting didn't give me such favorable results. It made the whole band sound weak and thin during the solos. I always found it necessary to slightly boost the mids, but I also had to boost the lows too. Otherwise I would get lost in the mix. Am I alone with this opinion? What do you guys think? The difference between playing in a trio as opposed to being in a bigger band.
@joequintana5546
@joequintana5546 5 лет назад
By the way, most of the time I play without effects. On very special occasions I'll add a wah and an analog delay which I'll only activate for solos. And I set it to where you barely hear it.

In my gigging life and now recurring nightmares, directly behind you guys would be an Ampeg SVT 8x10 cab (like the huge obelisk in '2001 Space Odyssey) attached to an always late and very inactive bass player strapped to a very active bass guitar on full throttle. I still have therapy for Post STV Stress Disorder. I wish I'd known this stuff back then. Its like alchemy or black magic and think you guys should wear white coats like in those old BBC 2 science programmes. Great stuff and cheers me up no end. Thanks Dan and Mick

Great video! It's amazing how many people don't understand this concept. I just traded my Laney Cub 12, a Korean Ibanez, and a handful of pedals I just wasn't bonding with for an Egnater a Rebel 30. I'm floored broth versatility of this amp. So much headroom and volume for just 30 watts... Especially after using a 15 watt amp for do long. If I wanted to I could easily use nothing but the amps footswitch and my guitar's controls to go between clean, crunch and lead. So far, I'm just getting familiar with the amp and how it's controls affect its sound, but I can't wait to try some of the pedals that avoided the Purge. I kept anything I felt would be hard to find, like the Timmy and my Visual Sound Angry Fuzz, as well as a few pedals I really like and use a lot like the Son Of Hyde, Open Road, Eno Trouble and Boosta Grande.

This was quite insightful guys. I was wondering if you folks would be able to do a video regarding how to choose a tube amp. Maybe like a comparison of the way different types of tubes sound? And possibly even a good way to eq certain tube amps or how to pair them best with overdrive pedals. I've been leaning towards an AC15 or 30 but that Hamstead sounds just phenomenal. I guess I'd just like to hear many different types of tube amps, how they break up and how their nominal eqs sound in the same context (with the tele if possible). That's probably a ton to cover in just one video but whatever you guys come up with is appreciated. P.s. Sorry about all the heat you catch on here Mick. I think you're a fantastic player and the knowledge you bring to the table is underappreciated. Keep the videos coming guys!

+Edward Cabrera Hello Edward. You have to go and play some. Don't agonise over it too much, just play two or three amps and get the one you're drawn to instantly. Don't second guess it. We'll continue to play and feature different amps, but it's such an individual thing. Even between Dan and I we like very different things in amps - everyone is different. As for heat, I wasn't aware I was copping any! Maybe you're reading stuff I'm not?! TPS viewers are extremely kind and generous in their comments. We get the odd troll, but that's to be expected sadly. Thanks so much for watching!

Best solo boosts are clean boosts in the effects loop of the amp! That is if your using your amps crunch. You guys should do a video of it because no one does videos like that. They’re always doing boosts over a clean tone or dirty tone in front of the amp!

'Ey guys. I really like, that you had this vid this friday. Cause, it's a thing that I disgusts with a lots of guitarist here in Denmark. I love going to concerts, specially in tge "underground", and listen to all the new bands, and the rock and type of music that you don't hear elsewhere. But! there is SO many guitarists that is just not aware of the sound, and the midrange, and just goes for that bedroomsound, that sounds great alone. I had a HUGE topic last week on The Danish Guitarist Group on FaceBook, daying that I'm really disappointed about young guitarists not putting enough effort into the basics of sound. If they want a crowd to come back and listen to their music, stream the music, and stuff, there is a huge weight on the guitars, in terms of putting the whole sound together, and making it all tight. And from what I hear when I'm going to concerts, it's only about 5 % that really can take the guitarsound and use it properly. It's so much out, that there is no sound guy who can recover and save the sound. I will share this, because it covers the "facts" that I was talking about last week. Thank you very much, it's much appreciated! Have a LOVELY weekend. I loved the jam, by the way. More of that. ;)

At 10:35 talking about the string tension. You the reverse headstock doesn't change the tension but it changes the feel. Explain because it must be changing the tension if it feels different. Right?
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 8 лет назад
+Nick M. I haven't done the maths Nick and I'm not a scientist. The total length of the string has an effect on how far you have to bend the string to achieve a certain pitch. We know that because reverse peghead Strats (and hardtails... And tune-o-matics/stop tails vs wrapovers) feel quite different. But various people have asserted that the change in feel is due to a change in tension (including me over the years), but it seems that it's not what's happening, assuming the scale length, tuning and string gauge remains the same. Apparently the tension stays the same if you measure it. This lady got very annoyed about it and made a long video to explain... m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N46HGv0ehuQ.html I picked up this Strat by serendipity a couple days after watching the vid. Oh if only the 15 year old me had this information! Of course I wouldn't have heeded it, probably. Another great and useful show. I have learned so much about practical sound from you guys. And you've inspires some purchases, too. One suggestion for a show is dealing with two Strat players in a band context. So often, I end out in situations where one has to deal with a Strat into a small Fender reverb amp player. I'm more ecumenical, in that I have a couple of other guitars besides Strats, but it is a common situation in a jam context. I also would be interested in your take on using Muffs in a band context. Keep up the wonderful work!

Hahaha, best line: "Plicky plicky plicky, plicky plick"! Great show as always guys, now for a serious question - if you only had a choice between a mid range boost (e.g. tube screamer) or an EQ pedal, which would you choose? Which one do you find more useful to help with a solo sound?

Love this show!! I thought I might drop a suggestion.. Different delays and sounds specific to specific delays? As in the Korg SDD-3000 Pedal vs the Strymon DIG? I remember reading an Ed O'Brien interview and he mentioned that every delay he owned had a specific sound belonging to it... Would love to different delays lined up! Keep up the great work!!

Hey guys, your videos are incredibly informative and great!!! Thank you I have a request for you to cover something in your Pedal Show: How about using modelers. The amp vs modeler debate is about as divisive as religion or politics debates. Could you do a segment where you compare an amp and pedal rig, with a modeler, like Fractal or Kemper, and how you would have to get your settings on a modeler so it fits in a band mix as well as an amp? The criticism out there is that modelers sound thin in band settings. I disagree, but based on how educational your other videos are, I bet you could do a great video on this topic Curt

Worth noting that playing rhythm with a very mid heavy lead tone will drive the other guitarist in the band nuts. A good tone is contextual. I've got a buddy who is a fantastic player and has a great tone for leads but he leaves that sound on too much (mostly because he's addicted to pedals and can't not use them). For rhythm, straight into a good amp with a good crunch channel is the way to go. IMHO.

Stick a little compression in front of a Zen Drive and add a little delay into an AC-15 or something like it with a P-90 guitar. See if you can wipe the smile off your face.

Hey Guys! Best channel on RU-vid! I'm asking for your opinions... I'm looking for an OD pedal to not necessarily boost (I have the TC Spark for that) but to add more OD/warmth for solo's. My amps are Marshall DSL-40 w/Creamback for the beautiful Brit crunch when needed, and a Fender Blues Jr. for cleans. I'm on/off with the TS 808, gain around 2.5 to warm up the Fender and yet keep it 'somewhat clean'. Hitting the tube screamer in Marshall mode is good for adding enough bite to solo. However, instead of switching to the Marshall just to solo, which completely changes everything, I want a pedal to, again-not boost, but add a little OD for solo's (Fender) when tube screamer is on. Would you recommend another tube screamer? I am leaning on something a little more transparent that a TS as I don't want to 'color' the tone even more. I'm all ears Mates! Warmest Regards, Bill

How can you make a clean guitar stand out in heavy ryhthm parts? I'm learning 3 years older by SW and I wonder how the first lead can be heard clearly. I've tried compression (dyna comp) but in the end I have to rely on an overdrive pedal to get it heard. Maybe you saw how Dave Kilminster does it live ? BTW you forgot the horn there ;) Nice show as always.

The reason I came searching and landed up on this video is cause I am looking for an ideal guitar tone for a solo for a ballad. It's not romantic more like philosophical and melancholic. Something like Pink Floyd but not punchy or too excitable. All suggestions welcome.

Hey guys, excellent, thought provoking videos. Loved the idea! I to, have been in such a situation were the drummer was twice as loud as me. How actually having a drummer and a bass player to demonstrate what is really like. I have think about the suggestion to see if it would be possible. Regards, Gazzman from Tassie.

Gents,Thanks again for great insights and nuggets of knowledge ! After watching you guys I feel like when I'm in my bedroom, I should work on my chops and when I'm at band rehearsal or on stage, work on my tone ! Honestly, all those hours working on patches have been quite futile for me because of the live factor. Got me into buying pedals I didn't need because I was trying to solve issues with my live tone trying all sorts of avenues without ever really focusing on the issue; fitting in the MIX. You can only practice that with a loud PA and some monitors on stage. I also found that because of my band situation (show band with a full horn line) I have to use in ears and it's hard to work on a live tone with freakin' in ears. Just a little rant on EIM hahaAnyway guys thanks again and as a final question, what is the specific mid spectrum frequency range do you guys feel is like bathing in chocolate ? lol

@Daniel - That exact Fender HM strat is still my favorite number 1 goto for that style of music. Bought it new in 1987 and have had it forever... In the same Razzberry colour I'm guessing yours might have been... Actually have two now, both similar years... The second one black crackle... Beautiful guitars ... And love the neck!!!!! Ha!! What ever happened to yours, me wonders!! :-)

+ That Pedal Show. Hi guys, love the new videos as do all of them. I'm currently running a CS 60's strat into a Marshall JTM45 set loud and clean as to not destroy my band mates ears trying to get it to distort. I use an xotic SL drive to get that driven Marshall sound. I have been using a TS808 in front of it to add a little mid range for a lead boost. If anything I feel that my lead tone seems quieter than the unboosted sound. What would work better? A cleaner booster afterwards for a volume boost or something different in front? I don't use masses of gain, think more that Malcolm young rhythm tone then something to punch it up for lead work.

Another great vid guys. How about a comparison video on 'Amp-In-A-Box' type pedals? Often I can't take my Guitar Amp and/or I'm required to DI into a desk or PA of some kind. I'm not talking digital modelling either, but true 'Amp-In-A-Box' style pedals like Sans Amps or AMT Pre-Amp style pedals Be interesting to see how you guys manage without an Amp at all :-) Just a thought

It's always great coming back, to review your videos! These days I use mids-scooped vintage fuzz and muff, with 69s on my Strat and a Laney Lionheart. Little help for lead tones in a band context! I think of boosting them, not for gain but recovering some of the mids they lack...Could you recommend any pedal? Ep booster? Mid-hump overdrive? Dedicated eq? Thanks! Have a great year, guys!

Following the concept for using a TS as a boost and say I wanted to use my amps drive channel. Would you place the TS in the fx loop? Great episode by the way guys!! Thank you.

I'm new to the channel & I just can't get enough! Thank you so much for sharing the vast knowledge that you've both accumulated. I have to admit, as well all probably should, I've been guilty of the long, epic delay times for 'notey' solos. Would simply shortening the feedback length & decreasing the mix of the delay allow for a better sound? I'm not one to use short delay times.
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 8 лет назад
+James Robinson for fast solos it's just Lessing the effect mix, so less delay effect overall. The fast delay times are to make the notes pop. Welcome to the channel :)

Hi guys, I know it is a very dividing area amongst guitarists. But have you considered doing an episode using the most recent range of guitar sim apps such as BIAS FX/TONESTACK/JAM UP etc. Whether viable as a good alternative to real gear? Typically used through active monitors, but perhaps trying these out with real amps? As far as I can tell a lot of people use these into the front or into effects loops (return only i understand to bypass the preamp, going straight to power amp).
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 7 лет назад
+bpdarragh Hello! Dan and I aren't big fans of modellers of any kind in terms of traditional guitar tone sound and feel. They're extremely useful, immensely practical and can be fantastic value for money if what you need is convenience and something to just do the job. They can also be immensely useful for recording and in low volume situations. But do they excite us to the point of inspiration in the way traditional amps and pedals do? Sadly not! We're just one opinion among many - plenty of people absolutely love them. Maybe we'll do it one day. One of us has to feel motivated to do so, and at present we're not quite there. Thanks for watching!
@bpdarragh

Hey man, sure, i understand. Nothing like a real tube grunt with some well made pedals. As you say great for practice in particular at low volumes, and for the skint amongst us. Love your shows BTW. Most informative. Perhaps try BIAS FX though one of your lush tube amps one day. You might be gobsmacked. Regards Bryan
