Who doesn't want to use two or more amps?
In this video, Daniel and Mick demonstrate and explain the things you need to think about when using more than one amp.
First off, using two or more amps can sound FANTASTIC, but when you do it there are a couple of things you need to do, namely making sure the amps are electrically isolated from one another - to eliminate ground loop hum - and also that they are in phase.
Plugging into a Marshall JTM45 (reboxed), a Fender Tweed-style Lazy J J20 and a vintage Vox AC30, the guys explain how these classic staples of the amp world can work together to give you a whole new level of tone and inspiration.
In addition to talking about complementary tonal, gain structure and compression characteristics, Daniel and Mick move on to basics of a wet-dry-wet setup: using effects in two 'left' and 'right' amps while keeping the centre amp dry.
If you've never thought about using more than one amp, this video will encourage you to give it a try - c'mon, you know you want to!
Daniel is playing his Gibson Custom 1958 Les Paul reissue and Mick is playing his Fender American Vintage 1962 Stratocaster.
The overdrive pedal used throughout is a JHS Angry Charlie.
Delay and reverb from a Strymon Timeline and Big Sky respectively.
The amps are mic'd individually and recorded into a Zoom H6 portable recorder. Post production and mixing for the left-right splits is done in Logic.
As ever, TheGigRig G2 is handling all the switching effortlessly.

Please make another video on how to actually connect to those 2 amps, what gadget to use to isolate the two and what gadget is needed for the phase issue... Actual cable routing etc...
@ryanspencerlauderdale687
@ryanspencerlauderdale687 5 лет назад
Most proper ABY pedals these days have a ground lift switch that isolates the amps and a 180 degree switch that corrects the phase. As far as cable routing, it is really personal preference, depending on what effects you want going to either of the amps. If you want everything to go to both amps, have your ABY at the end of your pedalboard. Otherwise, it depends on taste as long as you have amps that don't hum, and the bass in both amps is corrected {phase}.

I did the 2 wet amps stereo and one dry at my last recording session and it was incredible. Only I really saturated the 2 stereo wets and used a Keeley Caverns plus a Boss Tera Echo and got the amps pretty loud inside a decent sized drum room. Sounded amazeballs!! Like a jet engine inside a whirlwind. Turned out killer on recording. A Fender Twin Stereo left wet, a Fender Deluxe Reverb Stereo right wet both overdriven, and a VHT Pitbull middle dry clean. I was happy I had watched this video before the session and it gave me the idea.

I recently stumbled across using two amps. I have a 1965 champ. The champ didn't have reverb, so I bought a neunaber (stereo) reverb pedal. Soon after, I ended up buying a new tonemaster deluxe. Loved both, but they sound different. Decided to split the signal from the reverb pedal to both amps to see how some of the different effects worked in stereo. Sounded so good, I cant go without it.

Hey guys I love your show. I just wanted to say that I really appreciated Micks idea at 3:50 when you played the same chord with each setting directly back to back. While I like to think I understand most of the theory you guys are talking about, I am still very much a novice. Often I can't keep the "sound" in my working memory during verbal segways between them. Also as a novice it is difficult to filter sonic differences between setups when your playing style changes between examples. Thanks for sharing the great work!

Love my semi wet/dry rig… two Mesa tremoverbs on a high watt sealed back 4x12 loaded w/G12T75’s. One head w/6L6 one w/EL34’s connected with a Radial switchbone. My CP10, whammy, eq, wah, TS808 & DD5 run thru both amps but chorus & flange & a separate distortion only thru one, and use the true stereo in/outs on my T2 reverb sounds great! I mainly wanted to be able to mix a clean or crunch sound with my full on distorted/lead for clarity and articulation but the clarity of the fx is definitely an added bonus for this shoe gazer!

@@TheGigRigDaniel Hey Daniel. I'm sorry to bother you with this but could you elaborate a bit further on the point you were making at 11:29 about the importance of isolation? I don't quite understand the terminology being thrown around (Earth being the main one) but I'd like to eventually put two amps together someday and I'd rather not embarrassingly kill myself in the process. Are there any links or some detailed tips you could write out that could assist me in doing this safely? Sorry for asking this of you (I'm sure you're very busy) and for it being a slightly macabre subject matter. Thank you for your time.

@@greendayblinkfan182 "earth" is the euro/uk way of referring to what we in the states call "ground"...if that helps at all. Also they've done many follow up vids about stereo, wet dry, wet dry wet rigs, implementing diagrams, etc. that should help make things a bit more clear. just do a search of those terms on the TPS you tube home page and you should get lots of results. Best of luck!

One question: If I split my (bass) guitar signal using, lets say, a stereo volume pedal and use a fuzz/wha in one path and a clean signal through the other. Then, using an ABY pedal, combine both signals again and feed a single amp. Can expect problems with this kind of arrangement?... thanks!

I use a wet dry wet set up with a Vox on the right, a Fender on the left and and Orange in the centre. I use two Palmer isolation boxes on the left and right to eliminate hum. The sound is massive. I split after the drive and compression and left and right are output through modulation effects and a stereo Boss Harmonist. Each stereo amp has its own delay producing one delay each at different times.

Brilliant discussion of the amp-specific qualities of pedals. We players tend to get seduced by sounds in our heads and demos that show the pedal in use in isolation--one amp and no other pedals. "What does this pedal sound like" is a bit like asking, "What does this word mean?" (I'm a language teacher living in an East Asia pariah state). I always say, "It doesn't mean anything until you use it. And when you use it, it's always used in relation to some other word or words. Each time you use that word, it may change its meaning because of the words it is now used with." Ditto for pedals--they don't sound like anything until you use them, and when you do, their sound will depend on the amp they're being used with. Throw in some other pedals to make a chain, and the possible changes in sound--for better worse--increase dramatically. Just as some words are rarely or never used together, there are some pedals that are rarely used or never used with each other (impedance, oscillation, etc.) or that don;t sound good through particular amps but sound great through others. Forgive my waxing prolix, but this video is so stimulating! It really gets the synapses sparking!

They both sounded amazing and I turned one amp down and vice versa. They sounded amazing and were obviously in proper phase because all the tone was There.... I even unplugged one then the other bc I thought, No way am I not having phase issues... Well I didn't and it sounded great. Do you know why it 'Worked?' I don't that's why I'm askinf because I didn't understand why it sounded flawless with no issues. Thanks in advance.

Just two amps? Try this set up that I'll be hooking up this weekend: Feed an MXR EchoPlex preamp into a Radial Bigshot ABY to boost the signal. The two outputs of the ABY go into an MXR Stereo Chorus and an EHX SYNTH9 synthesizer pedal. Each of these pedals has dual outputs which go to a Vox AC15, Orange Micro Terror w/Marshall 4x12, Vox VT20X (modified to drive a Marshall 4x12) and a Fender Rumble 25 bass amp for the "wet" synthesizer output. You can't have a proper wall of sound without a wall of amps.

I liked the very recent video you did with the Wetter box and Wet/Dry. I would really, really love to see a very elaborate explanation of the best types of wet/dry setups you've found. It seems like you have clean, dry, and wet factors at play as well as tonal compliments. With the wetter box the way you recently did it, you have the clean and dry blended as well as the wet into two amps that compliment each other. I thought that was a neat way to get everything you need from two amps unless you're someone wanting stereo and cleans in the middle which is not me... 3-5 amps seems to be too much at that point. It seems like you get into philosophy, approach, technicalities, and execution on a lot of topics but haven't ever really done an hour or hour and half long video walking us through from start to finish on wet dry in a very complete fashion. I've definitely definitely learned from the videos you've put up about it, but I feel like this is a subject TPS should still set out to crush one day.

Thank you, Dan and Mick so much for these segments. You'll probably never know just how useful they are for guys like me. I must have watched this particular video a dozen times and finally decided to give it a go. Months ago, a buddy of mine built me a pretty faithful clone of late 70s Marshall JMP 2204 and after viewing this and other videos, coupled it with a Vox AC15. I also bought a JHS Angry Charlie and found out why you and Andy Timmons love it so much. To top it all off, I bought your HumDinger pedal(what a god send) and routed everything through my Voodoo Labs switching system for a wet/dry setup. My tone has never been bigger. The best part of it all is really understanding how it all works, interacts with itself and applying that knowledge to my live rig. I've never been happier with my tone, but I do have one question in regards to setting up the gain structure for the Vox. Are you, in the video, using the normal input or the top boost input to get you based tone for the Vox and how do you prefer the relationship(as Mick puts it) between the volume tone cut/controls and the master volume?
@TheGigRigDaniel
@TheGigRigDaniel 8 лет назад
Hi Anthony, so glad you're enjoying the show. My AC30 has an EF86 input which is very different but personally I much prefer the normal channel to the top boost. I go use the the cut to tame a bit of the top end. Still one of my favourite amps ;)

So how exactly do you run your cables from one amp to the other to use them together, and what do i need to be able to play one, the other, or both simultaneously? I have a mesa boogie dual rectifier which i love, but it has no built in reverb and the clean channel isn't that great for acoustic guitar, so i want to be able to switch to my acoustic amp....or, perhaps, when i'm playing the mesa in full rock distortion mode, pump in the other amp to use its great reverb....any thoughts on this? Thanks!

Great video!! Please do another video on technical aspects of setting up the rig for multiple amps. If you play two amps in concert without adding power to the signal, i.e., simply splitting the signal via ABY, then doesn't that cut the output power from your guitar in half, i.e., half the current going to each amp? Wouldn't that affect the sound of the amps when playing them alone versus in concert? Yet, wouldn't stacking the "full amplitude" of each amp be potentially really loud? How/ would you account for all that?

MY Digitech pedal has stereo outputs. I run one cable to a basic Marshall amp set to "clean". (Effects from the Digitech are kept to a minimum, because those effects will be further modified when they reach my other amp.) The other cable runs to a volume pedal, then to a Fender Mustang, which offers various effects and "amplifier replicators". Sounds great when I choose Fender effects that complement the Digitech effects I have chosen. The volume pedal lets me fade or boost the Fender to easily change the overall amount of effects.

Wow what a massive difference. What would be the best way to get a proper wet/dry or wet/dry/wet setup with a switcher (Moen GEC9 or new Boss ES-8) that doesnt have the versatility of the G2? Another great video!

Hey Brian, I am wandering the same exact thing using a Moen Gec9 V2. If you figured it out please respond!!
