“What is the correct order for my pedals?” It’s the first question for anyone getting into stompboxes for the first time, and will crop up again and again no matter how deep you get into the whole glorious mess. So in this episode, Daniel and Mick offer some practical advice on what to put where, and why…
Before we begin, let’s say this loud and clear for the record. THERE IS NO ‘CORRECT’ ORDER FOR YOUR PEDALS! However, there are a few conventions to follow that serve as an excellent start point when you’re trying to make a decision or solve a problem. This video explores that whole deal.
What we ARE dealing with in this video…
Basic effects order:
Wah
Boost/light drive
Heavy drive/distortion
Fuzz
Compression
Modulation
Delay
Tremolo
Reverb
What we ARE NOT dealing in depth with in this video…
Effects loops. Please watch this. • That Pedal Show - Effe...
Volume pedals. Please watch this: • That Pedal Show - Wher...
Gain stacking with multiple overdrive pedals. Please watch this: • Gain Stacking With Ped...
EQ. Please watch this: • Yes You Do Need A Grap...
As ever, all effects and amp routing is handled effortlessly by TheGigRig G2. For more on G2 see www.thegigrig.com

I can't believe it took a year and a half for me to finally take the advice of this video and try using the compressor after the overdrive. But doing this is absolutely the best improvement I've made in 40 years. And it's not only an improvement in tone, but what it does for me when playing with my band is no less than phenomenal. It has made the whole band sound much better. My guitar is now much easier to play. I touch the volume pedal maybe 3 times in a 4 hour show. It used to be every song. But now the band blends so much better. Solos sear through the mix without raising the volume. Everything has taken on a studio vide. I have long complained that our band just doesn't seem to be gelling, and now I find it was me who has been failing to blend. So humbling, but still so excited to have discovered this setup. I like phaser before OD too, Dan. Guitar > Wah > Hardwire CM-2 O.D. > Compressor > Noise Gate > Volume Pedal > Analog Delay > Boss CE-5 Stereo Chorus > Two Fender Blues Deluxe Amps set at least two feet apart with the stereo chorus on all night. From The Police to Alice In Chains this is tonal bliss for me. And maybe this setup works so well for me because the Fender Blue Deluxes lack almost any compression at all until windows are rattling.

WOW DAN... Mick... not just helpful, totally revolutionary! Been playing over 40 years and chasing tone 25+ As I watched this video numerous times and reordered my boards, I suddenly discovered I had so much better sound than I imagined... Perhaps I can stop chasing the next pedal and just enjoy playing what I have, even pulled a few out of storage and the work nicely without creating a bunch of background noise!?! This was without a doubt the most helpful tutorial I could ever hope for... thanks so much! 19:42 "It all depends on the job you want your compressor to do" Thank you sooo much for finally saying this!!! Everybody I know has the mindset that each pedal has only one job, but I think we should be way more open minded about the different things that every pedal can do in conjunction with the others.

I played in a Rush cover band for over 20 years and Alex used a lot of mild flanges - whether flange or his 80's & 90's chorus though - you want them AFTER compression, but BEFORE OD, i.e.: you want the crunch of the OD to dominate the sound on Rush songs afterwards it is too "swooshy"

@1971SuperLead
@1971SuperLead 8 лет назад
Jesse Belanger The noise gate should be after noisy effects like the overdrive and compressor, but before the reverb and delays. The tuner needs to be before everything but maybe the wah. I use a clip on tuner, so I didn't add it on the chain.
@volcomstoned876
@volcomstoned876 8 лет назад
+1971SuperLead Where you put your noise gate in the chain all depends on what you want to do with it. In a guitar effects chain they generally end up at the end of the chain right before any modulation or time based effects (which ideally should be ran through your effects loops anyways if ya got one and not into the front of the amp) this works; however like this the gate is generally ends up setup for one use, your high gain tone or your clean tone. Problem with this is if you have it setup for your clean tone then the gate will never close and if its setup for your high gain tone then its going to close all messed up on your clean tone sucking away all your sustain. Put your gate right before what you are using for gain and you will get a matched sound for your high gain tone as your clean tone. The ideal way to set your chain up would be a

I've always liked having my gain pedals go from most distorted to least distorted. Big Muffs after a tube screamer don't quite have that much of a difference than just a Big Muff by itself. I really like a low gain overdrive after a medium gain pedal. The saturation piles up nicely, the low gain overdrives add some grain/saturation/colour. keep it up guys!!!

Good demo of your pedal chain order suggestions - very helpful! More creativity here than most discussions of this subject which made things interesting.

Wow! Thank you sooo much for such a GREAT explanation! I am new to signal chaining my pedals and a female who REALLY doesn't want to be dependent on another person to "help" me set stuff up to fiddle around and FIND MY SOUND. Thank you so much!!! I really appreciated this! Woohoo!

Excellent, thanks. I moved compressor behind gain section and finally I managed to get good marshal like compressed sound from by Fender Deluxe Reverb. What is worth mentioned, that in this setup tube screamer (High level - medium drive) should not be compressed, it needs to drive my tubes. Thus I have updated my setup as: Guitar -> MXR Distortion 3 -> Boss Super OverDrive -> Compressor -> Ibanez TubeScreamer -> Fender DRRI. Anyway, thanks for this channel.

Cheers Evan, we're not doing anything fancy, just gear used well and recorded clean. There's no eq or processing :)

Loved the Tin Spirits style licks when you first flicked on the delay. I have both of the albums and love them to bits.

You are GREAT! I discovered "That Pedal Show" just a month ago and it seems to me one of the best websites to continue learning about the world of tone. Please keep on groovin Wah / volume> TC Comp> Vick's Fuzz> Sweet Honey OD> Xotic RC // into the Loop >> Phase90> Chorus> TC Nova Delay> TC Reverb HOF >>>> Mesa LoneStar Special (I love it BTW) ...But I'm gonna try some different pedal positions, for sure :)

You guys rule, and I have the el Capstan >> Flint Trem then Reverb like Mick said. Boy it sounds great and you two validating my thoughts and sequence feels as good as it sounds. I need more time playing and less time tweaking my gear. you guys help in all that and I appreciate your great work in the pedal arena. Cheers !!!

Thanks, gentlemen! A truly top-notch and well-considered analysis. And for what it might be worth, I heartily agree with your entire presentation. And btw, I put all this sonic goodness at the front of my amp, but reserve my Eventide H9 Max for my Blackstar's trusty effects loop du jour, which allows me to create ample sonic mayhem when called for.
