In this video Daniel and Mick follow up on the ‘Reverb Basics’ video that you can find here:
We’re comparing six high-quality modern reverb pedals, five digital and one genuine analogue spring reverb… plus the in-amp reverb in our Fender Super Reverb amplifier.
As regular viewers will know, our fully-featured, all-singing all-dancing, no-compromise reverb of choice is the Strymon Big Sky and you can see and hear that in many of our other videos. Today we don’t spend too much time on it, as there are a lot of newer pedals to get through!
The pedals we’re using today:
• MXR M300 Reverb
UK & Europe: bit.ly/2hLvESX
USA: bit.ly/3yo9D1c
• Lovepedal Hall Mod - no longer made
• Neunaber Immerse
UK & Europe: bit.ly/2QFbjkg
Australia: bit.ly/2UHqcVt
• Empress Reverb
UK & Europe: bit.ly/2wpXw6M
Australia: bit.ly/2wq2lgp
• Strymon Big Sky
UK & Europe: bit.ly/2wpLdEx
USA: imp.i114863.net/BgAr9
Australia: bit.ly/2x0GSdY
• Carl Martin Headroom Reverb
Our overdrives today are the Fire Custom Shop Carpe Diem and a Lovepedal Eternity.
Interesting bits and go-to sections…
• What is reverb anyway? 4:38
• MXR M300 Reverb discussion and examples: 8:05
• MXR spring setting compared with Super Reverb internal reverb: 9:55
• MXR with overdrive: 12:00…
• …and again compared with Super Reverb internal reverb: 12:57
• Lovepedal Hall Mod Reverb discussion and examples: 14:15
• Pre-delay explained: 15:00
• Neunaber Immerse discussion and examples:19:20
• Neunaber Immerse with overdrive: 23:35
• Empress Reverb discussion and examples: 24:51
• Empress Beer preset: 32:38
• Strymon BigSky recap (we don’t spend long on it because it’s in so many of our videos): 34:16
• Carl Martin Headroom discussion and examples: 35:18
• Carl Martin Headroom compared with Fender Super Reverb internal reverb: 39:00
Mick is playing a Fender American Vintage ’62 Stratocaster. Dan is playing a Fender Custom Shop ’63 Telecaster.
Amps are a Fender Super Reverb with 4x10 Jensen alnico speakers and a 1961 Vox AC30 with EF86 channel mod.
As always, all pedal and amp switching and routing is handled by TheGigRig G2.

Great demo. I was genuinely blown away by the humble reverb pedal when I bought a Hall Of Fame a few years back. I never knew reverb could be so musical and inspirational. I thought of reverb as in what you get on an amp. Now though I'm not sure why so many get hung up on ye ol' Spring reverb as the Plates, Halls and Mods sound so so good.

Wooohoo! My Friday ritual now revolves around waking up, pouring myself a good cup of coffee and watching the latest "That Pedal Show" episode! Shortly thereafter, I come to my senses and realize that I still have to show up for work, and so I make a mad dash to the office. Halloo from Miami :)

Great show as usual, guys. Love the information and the playing. Your enthusiasm for guitars/tone/gear really comes through and informs what you do. I got the MXR Reverb and Dunlop mini expression pedal last Friday and started to play after dinner. The next thing I knew it was 1:15AM! It's so easy to get lost in the sounds. Looking forward to next Friday. Thanks!

Ended up getting an Empress after trying out some of the other pedals -- including the Strymon and the Neunaber (and handful not mentioned here) -- and I couldn't be happier with the Empress. In addition to some really useful sub-categories (like lush ambient swells, shimmering atmospheric ambience, sparkling octave reverb, etc.) the main reason I bought it was that it did the *key* sounds perfectly. The Spring, Hall, Plate, and Room tones are IMO just better than the competition. Plus, it is very tweakable without being overwhelming -- I guess it's cool to have like 500 menus to scroll through on a pedal but I want to simply dial in a tone, save it, and play, which the Empress Reverb does super well. It also comes with an SD card slot where you can add free upgrades as well as the ability to use it as a looper pedal. It's awesome!

hey there? what's your favorite subtle, darker room reverb? I liked the BlueSky with low dampening all the way up, high all the way down..but had to sell it, underutilized anyways...I had a Context, too digital sounding, currently have a SubDecay Super spring-- it's ok. loved the reverb on the Flint, the middle setting, but had to sell it....I think i need a dedicated reverb and trem... any help would be appreciated... for context, I play weird punk/rock/experimental.....don't need many feature, just want a spring without the boing/splash or a room reverb that sounds " real"...I've been curious about the Spaceman Orion and the Van Solemate real spring but have heard very differing views on them...

Very nice reverb pedals and discussion, as usual. It's amazing how you can take such a plain sounding guitar and make it sound awesome with different time effects, such as reverb or delay. Surprising how well the pedals compete with the internal spring reverb. I think waiting for reverb tails added about 10 minutes onto the length of the video. I've always hesitated to invest any time, money or space into reverb pedals because sometimes you'll find yourself in a big boomy hall where there's no real point in using reverb. In the studio, I either use the spring reverb in the amp for retro sounds or simply add reverb in the DAW (there are some amazing in the box reverb plugins like Quantum Leap Spaces). I do use delay a lot live, however, maybe too much. However, this show makes me want to mess around with reverb in my rig a bit more.

Predelay is great for 'positioning' the sound source. No predelay is like having your amp at the other end of the hall - as you introduce more predelay, it's like pulling the amp closer to you. More immediacy. Try it the next time you do a full mix - you can place your guitar (or voice) anywhere on the sound stage.

They're cool. I like the catalinbread reverb pedals. It's a shame they're reverb specific though. My talisman goes crazy if I want it too. My amp doesn't have reverb. I thought you had to buy a huge box to get real spring reverb. That's cool! I learn so much from you guys.

At 25:23 Empress' "Thing 1 & Thing 2" is a bit of humor... It references Dr Seuss' The Cat in the Hat and his two helpers.

Back when I was around 19-20yrs old I got the absolute best tone ever, never beat it.With no pedals (sorry! I love them now, honest).MiJ VOX SG copy>Marshall JCM800 50W Combo completely dimed. Everything on 10.Placed amp at bottom of narrow concrete stairwell in studio toilet cubicle.Close mike with Shure SM57 (I think, maybe AKG).Far miked with one at the top of concrete stairwell.Closed all doors, sealing in reverberations.Thrash guitar in studio iso booth 50 metres away from amp.I still have those demos. Post-punk/post-rock stuff. We couldn't play, we didn't know anything. But that toan...man alive.

+Matt Gilbert That would be a heavenly sound Matt. We love cranked amps - nothing beats it for that pure and simple rock tone. Nice!

That Pedal Show Thanks! I uploaded the surviving demos to my channel. I'd forgotten how chaotic it sounded lol. But if you like post-rock-y stuff, it's a pretty cool sound.

Love your show and was wondering if you could do a video where you put together the perfect pedal board for the cheapest price possible. All your pedals are hugely expensive and unobtainable for your regular joe. Just get all your pedals, od phase flange chorus comp boost wah delay etc etc and get the best set up you can do on a budget. As cheap as you can get it but sounds great.

I'm a bit late to the party... but the preferred way to create an impulse response (for a convolution reverb) is a sine sweep. If that's not possible, something like a starter pistol or a clap is the most convenient substitute.

Hi guys. Been waiting eagerly all week for this episode. :) Nice work. Have you heard the Boss RV-6 reverb? For the money, it's an excellent pedal. Anywho, cheers guys. Looking forward to seeing the next episode! :)

+Ryan Hurst Yeah, Mick was using an RV6 only yesterday for some Andertons vids. Very capable!

+That Pedal Show. Hey guys, it's Ryan here again. I just wanted to mention something. Totally unrelated to "reverbs", but still relevant in terms of pedals. A comment left on one of your latest drive videos, somebody mentioned"The Zoo Drive", requesting that you guys give it a go on the show sometime. I've recently become good friends with the founder of the pedal at "Elteko Sound Design", a guy called Ilko Iliev of Bulgaria. He's an extremely genuine guy who cares very much about his product. And as I've purchased the pedal from him and had the opportunity only last night to try it out at two separate gigs, I was blown away by how fantastic it sounded and how it added another texture to my tone, my request is that you look into The Zoo Drive for yourselves and hopefully even get to bring it on the show at some point. Anyway that's all, hopefully you get to read this message. Take care guys, all the best.
