In this episode Daniel and Mick explore the possibilities of using drives, boosts and preamps directly into your amplifier’s effects loop. For most amps, that means bypassing the front end (preamp) of the amplifier entirely and just hitting the power section from your pedalboard. Why would you want to do that? Well, you might not! But there are two scenarios in which we could see this working well…
First, let’s say that you have an amp that you like but don’t love. The cost of upgrading to something ‘better’ is too high, so you want to inject some new life and sounds into the old beast. This is worth trying.
Second, maybe you’re doing a lot of travelling and have to deal with rented amps. It’s very often a Fender Hot Rod, Twin or Marshall DSL, for example. By bypassing the amp’s front end in this way and just hitting the power section from your board, you maintain a little extra control of your sound. Interesting? Let’s see shall we…

Thanks so much Mick and Dan! - great job! ....on a side note, a lot of players also use preamp pedals for recording and going direct...with a good power amp/speaker simulator of course...like the Two Notes Torpedo CAB....Cheers, Simon

Big thanks to you guys for accompanying me on my journey back into playing electric guitar! When I put down my electric for acoustic 10 yrs ago (couldnt bring my electric gear with me to school), I only used a RAT through my 73' orange or120. I always struggled with shaping the super warm fuzziness into a more colorful sound. I asked you guys for opinions on true spring reverb, and ended up getting the CTC white whale. I absolutely love it. The way it's preamp works with the amp is gorgeous! Additionally I revisited my Mesa Boogie V-twin preamp pedal and was able to use it to alter the EQ some and it sounds "ace". It inspired me to investigate the prospect of using the vtwin as the only preamp section, so got a mesa 20 20 dyna.... the result? Unreal. My favorite. (Noticed on your power amp reviews didnt include the Orange Pedal Baby or the MooR tube drive, perhaps food for future thought?) Bit of a rant, im aware; but you lot ev got my wheels turning, and I appreciate it more than you can know! Thanks Mick, thanks Dan!!!

Glad you got around to this. I've been interested in external preamps into the effects return/power amp for some time now. Those Kingsley pedals sound absolutely amazing. I saw Brett Kingman do some demos with the AMT Legend series a few years back (JFET recreations of famous amps) and that's where my interest really started. The possibilities are pretty intriguing. I've read good things about them on various forums too.

Hello Dan and Mick. Wow, what another fantastic episode. It did not disappoint and answered many questions I had about my own foray on my hybrid Marshall and its effects loop. I'm convinced more now than ever that I need a preamp in my effects loop to defeat a less than stellar tone stack at the front end. Now to strategize my presentation and convince my wife that this is a sound decision. It's not beneath me to beg like a dog either. LOL Cheers guys. Thanks again. For those recording on a budget, I ran my Egnater Tweaker (15 watt) amp into a Weber Mini-Mass (dummy speaker load) and used the line out on that to run through the pedal board, last pedal being stereo outs to a Marshall Bluetooth Speaker (Costco purchase). Mic'd that and run it into a DAW. It was a fun experiment with some very positive yet unexpected results. Funny thing my wife bought the Marshal Bluetooth because it looked cute.

Thank you for keeping your guitars in tune! I won't mention any names, but some presenters don't seem to care much about tuning. Also, running pedals straight into the power amp section is definitely another option for getting sounds. I think it works well when you want an extremely clear sound, which does happen on occasion.

You guys hit on a good point. You should be doing ALL of you testing through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and a Marshall DSL! Most people either own these, play gigs with these, or use them as back line rentals. The Two Rock and Hampstead sound great, but not what MOST people use. Another thing I do when I have to is use an effects processor board into the effects loop. Also try pedals into a solid state amp as a comparison. I watch everything you guys do. Keep up the good work!

This is a real ear opening episode. Loved it. I would want to see more of this sort of thing like compare the Maiden to other pre-amp pedals like the Effectrode Blackbird. Then it would be cool to see how they worked with valve standalone power amps like the Mesa 50:50
@MrBoggles
@MrBoggles 4 года назад
I’ve played around with this idea at home.. Xotic BB pedal, Timmy pedal, sounded great! The power amps are loud! So the level on the pedals were set pretty low.. but I look at it this way.. when the power amp is completely open, it’s like having a giant canvas to paint on.. like watching a big screen.. I even went as far as to try it with my different amps.. mix and match! For example I have a Mesa dual rec but the old style with the parallel effects loop.. now they’re not known for their clean channel.. so I took my hotrod deluxe preamp out into the fx return of the Mesa.. just this alone was quite interesting because as you switch through the different channels on the Mesa it engages the power amp differently which rendered some great colour over the fender pre.. and I could still use the Mesa preamp because it’s running in parallel.. I took it a step further too.. the Mesa has a ‘direct out’ which is a line level derived from the speaker section of the speakers transformer with its own volume control.. So I ran that into the fender power amp in.. And wow!! The cleans were stronger than ever (given it had essentially 150W to play through) the dirty from the Mesa also had punch and clarity at lower volume..

This was great! I've had to develop my pedalboard around small venues where I go straight from the board to a DI box. Now I have a gig that requires my Hot Rod DeVille, and my tone is totally alien to me running through the amp. Definitely going to give this a try.

Wow! Great tweak! So you made me experiment with my rig. I put a BB pre into the loop in my Mesa Express 5:50+. Then the tone just bloomed! A whole different sound. A really interesting (scull) episode. You have to do a follow up using something like a Hot Rod Deluxe or a Peavy Classic 30 to show how this applies to a mid range tube amp power section. I also think that the format of you guys enquiring into an idea in real time is really informative as opposed to just presenting known ideas (you've covered so many so well). The look on your faces when running the Spark alone into the power amp was priceless. I also bet Kingsley gets a sales spike after this.

I use a Mesa Boogie V twin preamp, the first version, pretty cool pedal. It has a headphone out and a regular out, in addition it also has a 'TO POWER AMP' out for giving these sorts of options more flexibility.

Finally managed to try the experiment of running my Mesa v twin into the power amp of my fender hot rod Deville 4x10. The sound was absolutely killer. As the power amp was all the way open I was also able to control the overall volume from the v twin master which made it much more house friendly than the Fender Pre amp. Now a Page DS behind the v twin clean channel maybe the way to go. Thanks Mick and Dan that definitely deserves a t shirt purchase

First things first guys, awesome job as always! This episode made me go back and watch the show with Simon Jarret because I remember the Constable from that episode and it was designed for this application as well. I think a great idea for a continuation of this show would be to get a hold of a Hot Rod Deluxe/Deville and run pedals like the Constable, Juggler, and Squire into the return loop. Maybe include pedals like the Ethos and Royal Overdrive as well. I've been leaning towards a setup like this for backlined gigs, cause like you said you have no idea what you'll get. Run these as the pre amp and run my pedals into them. Very cool! Anyway, thanks again guys for the awesome show!!

Excellent video, guys, thanks! As far as one can tell through the medium of YT, it sounds to me as if patching these pedals directly into the effects return produced a much more visceral, immediate response. As you show, the dynamics range is utterly amazing. In any case, this is a wonderful approach I'd never have thought of using but will have to try running my pedal rack through a Suhr Eclipse and into the effects return of my Blackstar Soloist. Not that the result could be the same as using a valve preamp, though.

I was just re-watching this episode to learn more about Kingsley pedals. When at at 41:20 Mick made a comment about a small amp, even a solid state amp. Orange Amps just announced the Pedal Baby a 100 watt A/B power Amp. It might be worth revisiting this topic of a contained board.

This is great. I've always run my echoplex pre amp into the effects loop. It seems to open the amp up alot more. I've also added drive pedal into the loop (just a cheap King Of Blues pedal). It works fantastic and gives a real big sound. It sounds like it is part of the amp. If I plug into the front end, it sounds to shrill.

Awesome video. Thank you for looking at pre-amp pedals, I have been hoping you would look at this method. If you ever re-visit this type of thing, consider looking at comparing pre-amp pedals to one another (maybe without a drive pedal pushing them, but ones with a drive/crunch sound already built in) as well as looking at some pedals that are designed to function as both a drive pedal and a preamp replacement.

That little mini spark is a perfect preamp/boost going into an FX loop return. Open, immediate, pure and on the amp I am using it is much more touch sensitive going into it vs. the amp input. Put an AB in front and now you got 2 channels. Interestingly you guys seem to have a greater degree of volume drop then I have experienced.

Great video! Excellent show, and nice to see Mick kind of running the show for once! (Not that I mind the usual, variety is just the spice of life, is all.) If you ever revisit this, could you please take a boost/pre-amp into an EQ and then into a drive for us to have a listen too as well? Just because I'm sure that most guitarists have access to those pedals much more readily than your (admittedly amazing) Kingsleys there. Thanks lads!

+Kossofffan Indeed! By your name we're assuming you're hitting a plexi with a Les Paul. If you can turn that up, no need to do anything else, no loops or preamps required. Cheers and thanks for watching!

Love the show! Keep it up guys. Ill be purchasing a shirt soon. You should cover tube preamp pedals in front of tube hybrid amps like music man amps with solid state preamps

Cool beans. I've been experimenting lately with running pedals into a Fryette Power Station. (I don't own any guitar amps with effects loops.) The results are highly variable, with the best sound resulting from hot line level input. Now the PS is intended mainly for speaker level input, which it can either boost or attenuate, but it has an instrument level input as well. What I haven't yet done is run gain pedals into a tube preamp (a DeLisle Eighty Sixed, featuring an EF86 pentode) set clean. Or put the gain pedals after the DeLisle. Must try both!

+Joe Comstock Wow, thanks guys that's very kind of you to say. I'm not a skilled player in the way that many of our guests are... but when the sound is good, I seem to be able to play better. That's one of the reasons Dan and I are so crazy about inspirational sounds. We can't play without them!

This may seem obvious to some, but in light of this video's content, I have stumbled across tonal gold!! Using a buffered dry/wet mixing box and a splitter: My signal is split after my tuner. One side travels through my pedals, to the amp, out of the send jack to my delay and reverb and back in the return (as normal). The other side is clean boosted directly into the return port via the mixing box. Having both blended into the return jack essentially creates a wet/dry setup with the same amp, with the ability to adjust the dry level into the mixture. You have to use the "dry" signal through the wet loop on the mixing box tho. Sounds ace. If you have the gear at hand, give it a try.

May I suggest some ideas for future episodes? it would be cool to see what you guys would come up with when required to build a pedalboard for certain situations: -small pedalboard where you are required to take a plane -rock-blues pedalboard vs modern rock pedalboard -a pedalboard where you are required to have many very different sounds -a pedalboard designed for studio recording I think that if you can elaborate a little on your thought process while building this boards it would be incredibly useful!!! cheers guys, keep up the good work :)

I've had a Siegmund Double Drive microtube pedal for about a year now and a Fender amp (was originally a blues deluxe reissue when I bought it). I never liked the tone stack in that amp because it was always impossible to dial in and not clear with my setup. Got the Double Drive and from day one found going into the return better than the preamp for my live shows. I've liked it so much I've thought about doing a custom preamp from him with like 3 channels on it built in and maybe using a different tube on one, like an octal. Been a great year.

The other scenario in which this is useful is for those of us who are running ampless rigs [In Dan's Voice: "Ewwww!"]. I recently picked up a torpedo CAB and have been eyeing the Kingsley Pedals as that was a popular recommendation as preamp solution. It's definitely the next iteration of that rack preamp 80's thing, but on a pedal board. The brilliant thing about it is that your whole rig is on the pedal board, but that doesn't mean sacrificing tone, its equally at home in small project studios where you can't always record loud amps, even the smaller wattage ones. It also means I can have several classic tones because I can get differently voiced preamps / amp in a box pedals, and the torpedo cab handles power amp / cab / mic simulation, better than modeling. I was literally thinking of sending you guys a message about this whole trend / opportunity, specifically with Kingsley stuff, and then you just went ahead and did it! Are you guys mind readers?

As ever, great video Guys, and the wealth of knowledge I'm getting just grows and grows. This episode is particularly relevant because at a recent rehearsal in an unfamiliar room I tried this technique using a Fender Hot Rod and the results were pretty bad and I'd like to know how I could've achieved a better result. I was using (cue tut tut noises from all) a Boss GT-100 as the preamp. Yes, a modelling device. I find in certain situations a one-stop-shop like the Boss is a very useful tool and there must be a way to incorporate it into a rig alongside my 'proper' pedals and amps that gives good results. I suspect Dan will tell me it's about impedances and stuff but I'd like to see a show explaining all that, if you can bear to do one, even if the outcome is that I'm just chasing my tail. Anyway keep up the good work guys and I'll wear my TPS T shirt proudly.

The Carvin VLD1 Legacy Drive is the perfect pre-amp pedal to run into your amplifier's effects return / power amp in. It is awesome.

Have you thought about a video where you each talk about your favourite guitarist and the set up you use to try to emulate your hero ? Was it the sound they managed to create or their playing technique, that made you a fan etc

So I've been reading a lot about this these past few months specially because of fly dates and you guys just made it a lot more clear for me. What about a "preamp pedal shootout" of some sort? I hear that that Ethos pedals are amazing as well and I've been debating between an Ethos or a Kingsley. Any takes?

This is very enlightening... Maybe going a bit overboard here but you could take a step further and have separate guitar and bass pedalboards that both use the same power amp and cab! Or even better, add in a Two-Notes C.A.B cabinet simulator pedal to emulate separate bass and guitar cabs too.
