The Big Lebowski? Is he as big as pushing the like button, subscribing and setting notifications to all so you never miss new content? I doubt it.

RIP to Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He steals every scene as Brandt, whether he is calling the Dude Dude, repeating the Big Lebowski (Her life is in your hands Dude), or just laughing awkwardly through Bunny's proposition 💰 What a talent he was 😭

I love the random pile of sneakers seen on the steps behind the landlord when he's asking about the rent. It doesn't make any sense but somehow our brains just accept that they're there.

I love how the private eye is supposed to show Bunny a picture of the family farm, as if she would miss the miserable 40 below zero, no sunlight, windy, desolate plains of her Minnesota farm!!! LMAO 🤣 OK 😆😂😆😂😆😂, THAT WAS BRILLIANT!!!

"Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, uh, your opinion, man." Fun Fact: With the exception of The Dude (Jeff Bridges) helping Maude (Julianne Moore) bowl in a fantasy, The Dude is never actually seen bowling once. The Real Dude Fact: A lot of the Dude's clothes in the movie were Jeff Bridges's own clothes, including his Jellies sandals, which he reportedly still owns and uses to this very day. Big Paraquat Fact: In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, John Goodman stated that The Dude (Jeff Bridges) referring to The Big Lebowski (David Hiddleston) as a "human paraquat" was one of the only improvised lines to make it into the final film. Virtually every other line was scripted.

Yep. I think that was a brilliant choice by the brothers. We can't see a character like him do anything that requires too much energy or concentration. What's cool is that we do get to see his ball make a strike during the credit sequence, as well as Walter's. ❤

Maude has what's known as a Mid-Atlantic accent. You hardly hear it any more in real life. It used to be something the children of old North Eastern blue bloods and old money were taught when they were sent off to fancy boarding and finishing schools. At the time it was considered posh and an extremely proper way to speak English. It was also a way to separate the very upper class from the proles. If you've ever seen Gilligan's Island, the two old rich people (Thurston Howell the Third and his wife "Lovey") have an exaggerated Mid-Atlantic accent.

Another enjoyable reaction, Tara. Thanks! There are a large number of things you EXPECT to see (or to be present in the film), but don't: - The film's opening shot - with the desert vegetation, 'Old West' font of the opening credits, and Sam Elliott narration - primes you to think you're about to see a Western... before the camera tilts up to reveal L.A. ( and the story takes place entirely in Los Angeles.) - Bunny was never kidnapped. - The men taking on the role of kidnappers, never had Bunny. - No person actually lost a toe against her will. - You never see The Dude bowl - not once. - No money ever exchanged hands. - 'Wheelchair Lebowski' doesn't actually have any of his own money - it comes from Maude & her family. - Therefore, 'Wheelchair Lebowski' is NOT the generous philanthropist that he presents himself as being (the plaques on the walls). It's all fake. - Walter is not 'Shomer Shabbos' / religiously observant -- in two different ways: • 'Shomer Shabbos' means 'Sabbath observant.' A person who actually were Sabbath observant, would only deviate from that in a true life-or-death emergency. Yet, all the Dude has to do, is to threaten to withdraw from the bowling team, and Walter immediately shows up with his car. (Walter has made bowling and the Tournament, rather than G-d and obeying G-d's Sabbath restrictions, into the center of his life.) • The larger purpose behind things like the 'Shomer Shabbos' restrictions, is to make you (and others in the community) into a person with self-control. Yet, Walter is the most out-of-control person in the story - always a tiny bit away from shouting, starting a fight, or being prepared to shoot someone. He throws the 'Shomer Shabbos' phrase in peoples' faces, as if to say, "I do these things, I restrict myself, so I'm better than you are," but he's the opposite of the type of person that G-d wants a person to be - a person with a lot of self-control. Also, you (Tara) came up with a new one (that I hadn't noticed before) - - The two goons who shook down the Dude at the start of the film, are not actually 'leg-breaker-professional-Tough-Guys'. They're would-be pornstars that are just coming up in Jackie Treehorn's company (and weren't smart enough to select the right shake-down target to collect Bunny's money). (This one is sort of an edge-case: If you subscribe to the view that 'we are what we repeatedly do,' then the two Jackie Treehorn henchmen might as well be leg-breakers, because they fulfill that role on two occasions.

@ryanaromero 9 месяцев назад
Why type "G-d" like that? Is it for respect / reverence?
@tranya327
@tranya327 9 месяцев назад
@@ryanaromero Correct - partially. This is very common, among people who maintain (or try to maintain) a degree of religiosity in their lives. The idea being, 'The Creator of the Universe is separate, and among other things, His name should be treated as holy (separate). Therefore, don't write out (or pronounce) the full name in casual conversation (such as a RU-vid comment forum.) ...The example here is actually taking things 'one step beyond' where it needs to be, as in my case (as a Jew), G-d's actual name would be four particular Hebrew letters. So, my writing 'G-O-D' - the English translation - does not actually violate 'writing G-d's name in casual conversation.' But, it doesn't really cost me anything to write 'G-d' instead of 'God', and writing 'G-d' has the added benefit of reinforcing for me, a mindset, and a habit: We are to recognize, and to take seriously, the relevant distinctions in life: G-d vs human, male vs female, human vs animal, Holy vs normal/secular, good vs evil, Life vs Death. (Contemporary mainstream thought is engaged in a war against distinctions, including those distinctions, while substituting its own. While there's no need to be obnoxious or aggressive, one can set an example with one's speech - to others and to ourselves. :)

Bowling was the only sport I could hold my own at. If you ever seen Charlie Brown trying to play football or baseball or almost anything else, you'd understand why he's my patron saint. Every single character in this is like at least one person I've known from bowling. The best part is the acid trip hands down, which we had to re-wind two or three times when watching for the first time. If you haven't seen "King Pin" with Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray, it's not as outrageous but still funny.

All the Coen Brothers' stuff is worth watching. For Jeff Bridges you should see 'Thunderbolt and Lightfoot' and 'Starman'. Her accent sounds Germanic maybe from a finishing school of theirs and her 'kill the wabbit' outfit is Wagnerian from his 'Rings' opera. I am the Walrus.

Recomendation: thumb thru Syemour Hoffman imdb movies... and watch em all... I was going to suggest "Before the devil knows you are dead"... buy all his roles are amazing... even little ones, like in "Red Dragon"... Trivia: "Shut up Donny" was a call to the character Buscemi played in Fargo, where he didn't stop talking.

Rather than Maude Lebowsky/Julianne Moore's outfit being based on the Looney Tunes cartoon, I think it's safe to say that both are based on imagery from Richard Wagner's The Ring of the Nibelung.

The secret to Cohen Brothers films is that the plot is not important. Their plots are rather simplistic and don't actually matter. The plot is just there to give excuses for interesting characters to interact.

The particular brand of dark absurdist humor the Coen bros employ has made them some of my favorite filmmakers and screenwriters. Raising Arizona, Hail Ceasar, Fargo and Burn After Reading are all hilarious, as is the extremely dark comedy Suburbicon (written by the Coens, directed by Clooney).
