Tommy witnessed an attack like this, when he was a bouncer. The difference was, the guy stabbed the other guy in the head. It looked like a punch, no one ever saw a knife. It only than was clear that it wasn't a punch but a knife attack, as blood squirted out of guys head. Thats the moment you realise that all of that trapping stuff is unrealistic as hell.

*Thomas's straight to the point, no bull, lesson. Thanks so much for opening our eyes about this. Distance control is so important. Btw, I have a bit of a challenge in sparring against another JKD person, as soon as I throw a kick, the partner jams me in by closing in as soon as I throw the kick and starts throwing a flurry of punches. Backing out is not always possible as there are multiple people sparring in the room and there are many walls too. Any idea on what could be the best way to throw side kicks without getting jammed or to at least limit getting jammed? Thanks Thomas!*

True, but if someone is trying to "sneak attack" via front attack with hands in the pocket, it becomes less sneaky. People who attack aren't always doing it in the best way, and it's our job to take advantage of their sloppiness.

Do whatever you can. Ikkyo is a basic technique in jiujitsu/Aikido/whatever to pin an attacker.

@@AikiCircus Does not change the fact that you are close to him while he might have a knife or some other deadly weapon. You have to get him on the ground first which takes a step or two.
