That's Why Nobody Wants to Mess with this Tank. Insane Power of Leopard 2.
For more than 40 years the Leopard 2 main battle tank has been the main weapon system of the German Panzertruppe or armoured forces. Despite its age, the several times upgraded vehicle is still regarded as one of the best main battle tanks of the world, many experts even rate it as the best vehicle of its class. The German Army is currently fielding a new variant of the tank, the Leopard 2A7V, which again features many improvements, the “V” in the designation standing for Verbessert, which when translated means improved. In this video we are going to take a closer look at the Leopard 2 and the improvements that have been made over the years.

I served as tank commander and platoon leader on the A4. It was was a very capable system even in the 2000s. When we had foreign soldiers from former soviet counties in an exchange training on the firing range they were blown by the capability of the Leopard to hit the sweet spot of a moving target whilst driving more than 30 km/h in rough terrain. When trying out the T72 on the Range I had to admit that it is very easy, really very very easy to learn how to operate this system. It took me roughly a day to operate the gunner controls. Taking my advantage as a well trained tank operator in consideration I still think that the basic skills and fighting capabilities can be learned in not more 2 to 3 weeks on the T72. But the simple system comes with a price to pay in form of less mobile fighting capability. But still don't underestimate the T72! I had have the chance to try out the Abrams when practicing with the old Ironsides. I never understood why they just have a monocular for the gunner. The Leopard had a binocular from the beginning and though they have the same (German) cannon the Leopard has the far superior fire control system which may need some more training to master but with a much higher chance of hitting on the first shot. To be honest the operational station for the gunner in the Abrams seems ridiculous to German tank gunners in matters of ergonomics and equipment. And although the Abrams has more space for the gunner and the commander even the T72 seems to be more ergonomically to me. Some fun fact beside. During the time when the A4 was the most advanced version of the Leopard 2 it had an inferior fire control system in comparison to the Leopard 1 A5, which has been the MBT of the Canadian and the Brazilian forces. The Leo2A4 used the EMES 15, the Leo1A5 the EMES 18. To understand how long it takes to fully equip an army with new systems. When I had my commander training at the school of armored forces in 2001 the Leo1A5 was still in use in 3 battalions in the Bundeswehr. I hope this little comparison of the 3 most used MBTs out of my personal experience is informative.

M1A1 / A2 is not equipped with the same cannon as the Leopard 2, as the M256 is relatively heavily modified.

@matthiasbaumbach5393 Год назад
@@hendi1571 @hendi 1 Uhhm no, your wrong! The first armament of the M1 was the 105 mm rifled M68A1 gun a licensed Royal Ordinance cannon which has been introduced as the main weapon of the Centurion Mk5. The M256 of the A1 and the A2 is the RH 120/L44 smoothbore gun as to be found on the Leo2A4 and A5 and it is produced under license. The difference is the fire control system which includes the gyroscopes and their fittings at the gun as well as the hydraulic system. But this is far from heavily modified. When you're talking about the gun then talk about the gun and don't intermingle the topic with fire control or gun carriage.

@@hendi1571 The modifications you mention are either not on the gun or not of ballistic effect. The cradle is part of the carriage, not of the gun itself. And of course is is different as the Abrams cradle was designed to fit in the 105mm Royal Ordinance. The modifications on the breach are of non ballistic nature and ergonomically only. The M256 breach is missing the cage for the cardridge bases and has an other designed deflector for the cardridge bases. But it still is the same breach. The recoil system has the same specifications but the parts are at different places around the gun because, well you guessed it the turret of the Abrams was designed to carry the Roayl Ordinance. None of the ballistic and technical specifications differ from the RH 120/L44. The modifications are to be considered as cosmetic for the already mentioned reason that they had to fit this 120mm gun in a turret designed for a 105mm gun. And all this does not falsify the fact that the M256 is produced under license as a model of the RH 120/L44. I assume you have never been inside of one of these tanks or operated them. And I assume you have not been a teacher for ballistic systems in exchange programs but you are fascinated in tanks and read a lot of books. This still does not make you a professional with profound knowledge. Either you worked on the systems and studied them in all their specifications like I did or you should stop talking from above on professionals. Your are acting totally snootly towards other people in several threads of this comment section. I wonder why. I'm convinced you never served in armed forces because your trolling behavior speaks in volumes. And I absolutely call out your audacity to trying to teach down on professionals who operated several tanks and who served several years whilst yourself are a lousy tank nerd reading books at the desk. You might have been reading thit or that book, I've been reading the manuals of these tanks. Salutes yours 1st Ltd Baumbach

Served the Bundeswehr in 2001 and had the opportunity to watch a joint maneuver in Bergen Belsen with the Luftwaffe. It was frightening to see the effectiveness and time to kill. Even in those days the cooperation with our old Tornados was absolutely spotless. These guys left nothing but a clean sheet on the target range. The KF51 has a different Mission. 1) Not a Heavy MBT Like the Leopard 2. 2) Shorter Main Weapon while it is a 130mm smoothbore gun and Not a 120mm gun Like at the Leopard 2. 2.a) less rounds than the Leopard as the 130mm is much larger than a 120mm calibre. Compact 130mm amunition compensating the disadvantage do Not exist....a fairy tail of the Internet... 2.b) Higher kinetic Energy of the 130mm calibre while less Vibration and structural Stress than the longer 120mm generates. The Leopard 2E a 2A6 customized for Spain got this longer 120mm installed. The Leopard 2 is the basement of the EMBT, which Looks more than a Platform for a EMBT and a heavy Tank-Hunter. The EMBT will get a 120mm smooth bore. The Heavy Tank Hunter the 140mm from Nexter. Turret will Look completely different then while the Concept will be the Same. Exits on the Level of the Chassis at the sections of the highly integrated turret-component. The Heavy Tank Hunter will get a turret more looking Like a Suspension for the gigantic Nexter Achelon 140mm. The KF51 is a Hybrid. Middle Weight Battle Tank and Tank Hunter. Both Tanks and Defence Systems will get combined and Connected will co-existvand Support Each other. Arrow 3 + IRIS-T SLX + IRIS-T SLM and mobile Mantis on Boxer and/or IRIS-SLS. EMBT as Heavy Tank Hunter + EMBT and/or Leopard 2A7[...] + KF51 + Boxer with a 120mm mounted. The MBT Group will be supported by Puma and Lynx Tank-Grenadier Tanks and IFVs. Air-Support by Eurofighter Typhoon + SAAB Gripen E/F and the modern Version of s real Horten the Phantom of the Sky. Krauss-Maffei-Wegemann will build new Platform of the Leopard 1A5 as this ist still the Phantom of the Battlefield as Leopard 1 and Gepard 1A5. A Leopard 1A5 + cavitities (Armor Tech of the Leopard 2) is even better than any T-72. The Porsche under the MBTs never gets too old....Leopard 1, the Phantom of the Battlefield.

leopard 2a5 has L44 gun than got improved to L55 which is a longer barrel on leopard 2a6 and leopard 2a7 also it uses 3 kinds of ammo heat apfsds and multi purpouse round which can take out a helicopter bc it ca explode when near target so it doesnt even need to directly hit to damage also now germany is making new EMBT with france it will have autoloader 130mm rheinmetall gun trophy system which was also tested on leopard 2a7 now called 2a7a1 which will probably not be used bc of the EMBT and EMBT will have new 1500 hp turbo diesel engine edit: the leopard 2a7a1 had to get 130mm gun but they didnt do it probably bc of money for EMBT

In the Beginning it was an cooperation between the americans and the germans called "tankprojekt 70" they want to build an mbt together but the americans want to have a gasturbine engine and the germans a diesel engine so they build their own mbt .the results are the abrams and the leopard 2.

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but doesn’t the Leopard 2 also Stow extra ammunition in the front compartment near the driver. This can cause catastrophic failure when hit. I believe this is what happened with some 2A4 versions in the Turkish army. I still think the Leo 2 is a great tank but the extra rounds in the front has always concerned me.
