In African customs, a man's representative or family members goes (bearing a few gifts) to the women's family house. Its like an introduction of both families. The man's family introduces themselves and mention to the woman's family that one of their own is interested in their daughter. I'm from West Africa and it works the same. Now considering your distance you discuss it with the family and come to an understanding.

My husband ( Yoruba Nigerian) had to lie down prostrate with many male relatives in front of my father to BEG for my hand in marriage. We have traditions. Ziheng, the reason why Erica’s mother is upset is because in Africa, before you announce to the world about your marriage, you need to get permission from Erica’s family. Marriage in Africa is between families. You, accompanied by your family members (or representatives like aunts, uncles, cousins) will need to meet with Erica’s family and ask them for her hand in marriage. The next step is the dowry and then the wedding. It’s a very sensitive process for Erica’s family so please be sure to do it. Congratulations!!! Proudly East African!!
