Wow. Who would’ve thought that they would be playing there? Thanks for the view! Please help me spread the love 💕 by sharing the videos and the channel!!
Great story, GT. The Association has always been one of my favorite groups starting with Along Comes Mary. Had a few of their albums, including the Renaissance album which I really liked. Windy, one of the best songs ever.
I always enjoy these videos. I think it's great to see someone who values the perfect 45 as much as some people seem to worship the album at the expense of singles.
This has been so interesting! It also brought back memories of my 14-year-old self, transistor radio glued to my ear, listening to Windy. Thanks for the memory GT!
The recording marathon in this story reminds me of lyrics from the Who song 'Success Story' written by John Entwistle "Back in the studio to make our latest number one Take two-hundred-and-seventy-six You know, this used to be fun"
Yeah. Recording can become an albatross around yer neck. Thanks for watching! Please help me to spread the love 💕 by sharing the channel and the videos!!
I met Larry Ramos very briefly as a young boy when The New Christy Minstrels made a tour appearance in Ketchikan, Alaska. As part of the promotion for the concert they held an autograph session at a local record shop. I bought one of their albums and got five or six autographs on the album jacket, most prominently from Barry McGuire and Larry Ramos. They were all very cool even though I'd bought an older album that some there didn't perform on. I had no idea that Larry would wind up with The Association singing on a huge hit like "Windy" just three years later. You gave a now-68-year-old man a nice trip down Memory Lane. Thanks, and R.I.P. Larry Ramos
Hey - what a great memory! He seemed to be well grounded, particularly as a member of a pop band. And THANKS for the view and the GREAT post!! Please help me to spread the love 💕 by sharing the channel and the videos!!
The association were good musicians, check out the performance of along comes Mary on the Ed Sullivan show. Done completely live, no lip syncing. Have all their albums. One of my favorite groups.
I enjoyed their performance on the Smothers Brothers show. In this one their intro was creative and funny, but they were lip syncing their song. You can hear the change off as the song hits the downbeat with the guitar.
Great video! I've loved the Association since I was a kid, and have several of their albums. My understanding is that the group, augmented by session musicians, did play on their first album, and played almost all the instruments on their second, and both those sound good to me. They also sounded good in the clips of them performing live I've seen and heard. Maybe Bones Howe disagreed, or perhaps his attitude was "why settle for good musicians when you can have great ones?" Whatever the reason, "Windy" is a great record.
@@MatthewPoplawsk I can't understand that, especially about The Associationj. They were uptight, outta sight and really in the groove. Come to think of it, my Dad, who was born in the 1920's didn't much care for any of that either.
I admit I'm not a big fan of the Association but this was a well done song. All their songs were. Only reason I never went crazy for this band is that there was just much out there in those days and that particular year there were hundreds of groups and songs out there then. You could spend all day listening to music and it would be possible to not hear the same song twice. Probably would not happen because they played to top 5 songs like constantly and the rest of the top 10 almost as much. Of course we all understand why.
Nice work again and the devil is in the details as you always point out. Another masterpiece from a talented group with major assistance from the Wrecking Crew in addition to talented engineering and production efforts. Interestingly, folks credit Joan Baez’s version of “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” for Led Zeppelin’s version but it was actually The Association’s version that gave it an early Rock adaption before LZ. Once again, all of this dispels the misconception about The Association being just another run of the mill pop group.
I heard the original Demo by Ruthann Friedman on RU-vid 15 years ago but it seems to have been taken down as of today I couldn't find it ~ The song was originally about a guy called "LARRY" ~ But otherwise you did a great job digging deep into its history ~ I didn't know about her David Crosby connection ~ Anyway it wouldn't have been as big of a hit called "Larry" ~ Big fan of the Association saw them live back in their early days of the mid-60s ~
Someone might expect to find Moe and Curly in the lyrics. LOL. Thanks for the view and SUPER comment!! Please help me to spread the love 💕 by sharing the videos and the channel!!
HELLUVA BACK STORY!! WINDY is my favorite The Association song. I'll bet a lot of people would be interested in hearing a backstory behind their favorite songs. You might have done this one: A backstory for the song WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL.😊😊😊😊
Hi!! And Thanks for watching!! That is an interesting story alright and Winchester Cathedral is already on the Development queue but not yet scheduled. Please help me to spread the love 💕 by sharing the channel and the videos!!
Hey I am one of the biggest Association fans ever I have every album plus the Russ solo album…. But I never heard this detailed story but the only thing I disagree is “Renaissance” was a great album!!! Love all of the Valiant label releases…..thank you
Haight-Ashbury was all about the new order - you know. - where money didn’t matter and everyone was broke and expected free services and to grow their own food and eat it not sell it and still have unprotected sex and kids without real families and deafening music that caused permanent hearing loss and experimentation with psychedelic drugs that may or may not cause irreparable DNA damage. Yeah. That utopia.
Licensed for broadcast, never did it though. Disco was too lucrative! Thanks for the kind words! Please help me to spread the love 💕 by sharing the channel and the videos!!
@@paulsto6516 I also own a PRS CE24, and, although I like the pickups in it better, it is not in the same build quality class as the Zack Meyer. I did change the tuning machines to Kluson Revolutions and it was a superb upgrade.
Yeah, due to copyright restrictions and my status as a RU-vid revenue-sharing partner, I’m just not allowed to play long clips of most songs on videos exceeding 1 minute in length. Thanks for watching! Please help me to spread the love 💕 by sharing the channel and the videos!!
