CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When their song hits the airwaves, the band members converge to celebrate wildly.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Tom Hanks made his directorial debut in this bright comedy set in the mid-1960's about a rock group and their brief fling with fame. Guy Patterson (Tom Everett Scott) works as a salesman at his father's appliance store and plays the drums in his spare time, fancying himself a jazz musician. One day, a buddy of Guy's tells him a local rock band, The One-Ders (it's pronounced "wonders"), are in need of a drummer -- they have Battle of the Bands coming up and their usual timekeeper has broken his arm. Guy agrees to sit in, but when it's time to play their best original, a love ballad called "That Thing You Do," Guy lays in a sharp, driving beat that turns the tune into an uptempo pop-rocker. Lead singer Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech) isn't happy at first, but guitarist Lenny (Steve Zahn) and the nameless Bass Player (Ethan Embry) think the song sounds better that way -- and they notice the girls like it just fine. Soon people are actually requesting the song at their shows, and the One-Ders scrape together some money to press a single of "That Thing You Do" to sell between sets. A DJ puts the song on the radio, and opportunity knocks in the form of Mr. White (Tom Hanks), who works for the very major Play-Tone Records label. Play-Tone buys the rights to "That Thing You Do" and puts the band on the road as their song makes it way to the top of the national charts. But what can The Wonders (as Play-Tone have re-named them) do for an encore? And what should Guy do about his infatuation with Jimmy's girlfriend, Faye (Liv Tyler)? Real-life 60's obsessed rocker Chris Isaak has a small part as a recording engineer, and fans of real 60's garage bands will appreciate the wealth of small, accurately observed details (for example, halfway through the film, when a few "That Thing You Do" royalty checks have presumably kicked in, the band's inexpensive Danelectro guitars disappear and the Wonders are suddenly playing on brand new Fender gear -- the height of rock style in 1965).

+kutzbill I know Kevin & Neal through mutual friends. What it comes down to: Is it a good song? I've done "Riding The Storm Out" acoustically (with Kevin's permission). A good song is a good song no matter how it's performed. On the "Buiding Bridges" tour Kevin and I chatted for about 20 minutes about issues like this. Most of the Illinois Groups (REO, Cheap Trick, Ides of March, Cryan Shames, Styx, Off Broadway, et al) have been very supportive of my origs. The one thing they all said was, "If you're going to do one of our tracks, tell people to but the album." Always can do! -KC Taylor aka Thunderossa.

This is the by far the most memorable scene of the entire movie. Seeing the group so elated brings me so much joy. I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. In the 60's, our local bands were heroes. They played at teen clubs and dances, and their records (very difficult to find today) topped our local AM charts. They rarely broke the national Top 100, but we did not care. This was "Louisville's Own" music. This moment in this film makes the memory of that rush back to me.
@Bluemgwes
@Bluemgwes 4 года назад
Couple things I love about this scene; 1. At 1:20 the bass player bangs on the speaker at the exact same part where the claps and drums start/increase and the music gets much louder. Great synchronization! 2) As soon as they each hear the song on the radio, nothing else in the world matters and they drop what they’re doing to celebrate (i.e. parking the car in the middle of the road with the passenger door not closed) This might be the best personification of joy I’ve ever seen on screen. Can’t help but smile for them every time I see this scene.

@@Hellwyck No - they verbally correct the compere at the talent show, and again with Boss Vic Koss at the variety show but Jimmy stubbornly still keeps the name as "The Oneders" on the record label. It's not until they get signed to Playtone that Andy White forces them to change their name that they finally drop it: "Next... this One-ders , with the O-N-E - It doesn't work; It's confusing. From now on you boys will just be simply The Wonders."

Whoever did the location and props in this movie hit the nail on the head. Looking at the appliance store brought me back to the old Western Auto in my hometown in South Texas. That huge beautiful cabinet stereo was spot on because we had a Montgomery Wards Airline in our living room. It was at least 6 feet long!! and those little transister radios with the single earplug hit home to me. I had one and it brought the world of the Beatles, the DC Five and the Stones into MY world.

It's always amazed me that great songwriters can simply come up with a song. They had an idea for a movie. They needed a song. It had to be a catchy song or the whole movie would fall flat. To say they succeeded would be an understatement. It is a perfect song with so much likeability that it instantly grabbed the audience, has continued to grab audiences, and I expect will grab audiences for decades to come. It has everything one would expect in a "hit." It certainly didn't hurt that the movie was so well done.
