In the band's dressing room, a broken-hearted Faye (Liv Tyler) breaks it off with Jimmy (Jonathan Schaech).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Tom Hanks made his directorial debut in this bright comedy set in the mid-1960's about a rock group and their brief fling with fame. Guy Patterson (Tom Everett Scott) works as a salesman at his father's appliance store and plays the drums in his spare time, fancying himself a jazz musician. One day, a buddy of Guy's tells him a local rock band, The One-Ders (it's pronounced "wonders"), are in need of a drummer -- they have Battle of the Bands coming up and their usual timekeeper has broken his arm. Guy agrees to sit in, but when it's time to play their best original, a love ballad called "That Thing You Do," Guy lays in a sharp, driving beat that turns the tune into an uptempo pop-rocker. Lead singer Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech) isn't happy at first, but guitarist Lenny (Steve Zahn) and the nameless Bass Player (Ethan Embry) think the song sounds better that way -- and they notice the girls like it just fine. Soon people are actually requesting the song at their shows, and the One-Ders scrape together some money to press a single of "That Thing You Do" to sell between sets. A DJ puts the song on the radio, and opportunity knocks in the form of Mr. White (Tom Hanks), who works for the very major Play-Tone Records label. Play-Tone buys the rights to "That Thing You Do" and puts the band on the road as their song makes it way to the top of the national charts. But what can The Wonders (as Play-Tone have re-named them) do for an encore? And what should Guy do about his infatuation with Jimmy's girlfriend, Faye (Liv Tyler)? Real-life 60's obsessed rocker Chris Isaak has a small part as a recording engineer, and fans of real 60's garage bands will appreciate the wealth of small, accurately observed details (for example, halfway through the film, when a few "That Thing You Do" royalty checks have presumably kicked in, the band's inexpensive Danelectro guitars disappear and the Wonders are suddenly playing on brand new Fender gear -- the height of rock style in 1965).

@@lingghiteng9432well, that doesn’t really make sense though. Whomever made the caption did it of their own free will? Knew about Faye and Jimmy? I’m quite sure it was Mr. White considering he was their manager. If it were some outside factor beyond the group, then it looks like sabotage.

@@Aethgeir If we decide the appendix to LOTR is canon to the films, Aragorn lives to 210, and in Númenorean fashion decides, "I'm good, time to die" (which means he dies before his health and mind begin to fail). Arwen and Aragorn say goodbye to their children, Aragorn dies, and Arwen goes to where Lorien used to be, lies down where she fell in love with him (because he fell in love with her in Rivendell, in his early 20s, immediately after being told "Yo Estel, your real name is Aragorn, you're son of Arathorn, you're the chief of the Dúnedain, and you're heir to the throne of Gondor," but she wasn't interested in him until he was in his 30s and had become more of a strong, mature, level-headed man... and also Galadriel, her grandmother, shipped them as a couple so she dressed Aragorn in fine elf fashion, in 80s romcom 'she was hot all along!' makeover fashion) and died. So idk, like, yeah losing the love of your life is going to hurt more than a break up, but she died almost immediately after, and she had a long, happy marriage. They had (as I recall) two daughters and a son, and would periodically visit Sam, Merry, and Pippin just outside of the Shire (Sam's eldest daughter actually became her handmaiden)

The thing is, this moment was inevitable. Whenever there was any physical displays of affection between Jimmy and Faye, she was the always the one who initiated it. And earlier when Mr. White asked who Faye was, Jimmy said "she's sort of like my girlfriend." Sort of? Just goes to show that Jimmy never felt the same way about Faye as she did about him. On another note, I like how they cut to Guy when Faye's talking in this scene. You can see the look on his face even though his eyes are hidden behind the sunglasses. In that brief shot, you can simultaneously see his heart breaking for Faye and him realizing that he's in love with her.

Guy did always look out for Faye. Like when they were trying to hurry to the car, security thought she was a crazy fan and stopped her, everyone got into the car except for Guy who turned back and got her and told security “She’s with us!”

The scene that hurts me the most is in the airplane band meeting Guy says "Guys, Faye's not feeling very good". Jimmy then straight up ignores that and asks Mr. White about getting in a recording studio.

That’s one way of looking at it, but I think Mr. White set that up. It was supposed to be a romantic thing since Faye was with them all the time. Jimmy did have class up until that moment. Just because he was getting noticed by another woman and was getting too big for his boots.

It wasnt really fair on poor Faye being treated so harshly by Jimmy like that, she did nothing wrong, he just became a little too egotistical, too big for his own boots. It was his loss at the end of the day :(

"Why couldn't you have dumped her in Pittsburgh?" Seriously, Jimmy totally lead Faye on. He made her believe that there was a future for them when there clearly wasn't. When she saw the "Careful girls, he's engaged" caption appear, she was happy thinking that this was his way of proposing to her. Only for him to bluntly and callously tell her that not only is he not proposing to her, but that he has no intention of ever proposing to her. That's not just nasty and mean-spirited, that's evil and cold-blooded. If you're not that serious about the relationship, then just end it. Don't drag it on when there clearly is no future while making your partner believe there is one. Not only that, but it was implied that Jimmy was having an affair with that diva singer when they were touring together. The worst part of all is that he didn't feel guilty for breaking her heart. The whole "I should've dumped you in Pittsburgh" line he calls out to her tries to paint him as the victim. Oh well, it turned out all right in the end when she ends up with Guy and they live happily ever after.

Even though she wasn't in the band, Faye was essential to the group! Her enthusiasm for their success and her love for Jimmy was the catalyst in the group's success! Her leaving Jimmy was really the nail in the coffin for "The Wonders".

Jimmy: Thinks everyone and everything else is beneath him, doesn't treat Faye right at all, and is generally unlikable. Guy: Is nice to everyone, has a fun-loving personality, cares about his friends, loves Faye, but is respectful enough to not try and steal her from Jimmy, takes care of Faye when she's sick, is the only one who notices her almost getting left behind in the crowd, appreciates what she brings to the table, is genuinely disgusted with Jimmy for dragging her across the country when he didn't really care about her, and lets Faye know in a loving, honest way how much she means to him. Everyone, get yourself a person like Guy Patterson. People who treat you the way Guy treats Faye are totally worth it, as lovers and as friends.

Yep, and Jimmy not having a clue how the music business worked was the icing on the cake--quitting the session, which left everyone but Guy in breach of contract with Play-Tone. Even if he hadn't done that, Jimmy's behavior up to that point showed Mr. White that he was going to be difficult to work with.

One thing I like about this movie is how each character resembles the personality of a Beatle. Their positions on each instrument are switched but Jimmy is Lennon, Guy is McCartney, Lenny is Ringo and T.B. Player is George. Very clever whether it was intended that way or not.

Pat Rick I didnt get this joke until I read this comment. I don’t think it comes across very clearly. It’s just hard to come to the conclusion that something so specific to the love story thread coming undone was done with so little explanation or intention. It makes sense if you think hard about it but the joke itself and the way the scene is setup leads you to assume it was someone in the room. I always thought he meant shades. Like shades was his friend and thought he was a good musician and just wanted to heal the relationship for his friend. Or he thought it might help faye since he was good friends with her.

I re watched this movie tonight since I didn’t remember any of the movie and haven’t seen it in years. She didn’t deserve to be treated that way and while I was watching that part I kept thinking he is such a jackass. He let his ego get in the way. But Guy on the other hand he loved and appreciated her for who she was and he deeply cared for her. Glad they ended up together.

I read about how Michael Landon had a feud with Victor French on the set of “Little House on the Prairie” because French wanted to move on since there was no written contract for him to stay. So Landon cut not only him but the entire Edwards family out of the show in Season 4 and the show was never the same after that. One of the actresses from the show (Charlotte Stewart) said “They were all treated as collateral damage, especially Radames Pera.” I thought of this movie and scene.

Not sure how that relates to That Thing You Do, but you nailed how Michael Landon was. The press gave him a pass thruout his life, but it seems from various sources he was a SOB, thought he was God, and ruthless & mean. He had a wife & bunch of kids. Left them for a new younger blonde. Had little to do w/his kids from marriage #1. Had a bunch of kids w/wife #2. Then left her for a new younger blonde (again). Dumped family #2 and had new kids w/wife #3. He refused to let other good looking actors get hired on Bonanza (he had clout), because they were competition. He's the reason "Adam" left the show. And on and on.

Good educational video for women. Jimmy is, at best, a borderline sociopath. We're supposed to feel sympathy for Faye, but all I can muster is a vague contempt for her sticking with a guy who treated her like that. Too often we read about her type in the news posthumously.

I actually agree with you. All these comments praising her. For what?? He made it clear from the first moment we ever saw them together that she could disappear and he would not likely notice, much less care. His lack of any sort of feelings for her is plain as day and he never even tried to hide it or pretend to be anything else. That’s why the line “you stay away from me” makes me laugh every time. She has an entire speech ready for someone who flat out doesn’t care and was never trying to be with her in the first place. Unintentionally hilarious scene. Her character is so weak and pathetic that it ruins the movie for me.

@@daughterofolaf I found that to be one of the biggest flaws in the movie. You'd wonder when watching this movie with fresh eyes what she ever saw in Jimmy to begin with. She told Mr. White that they had been together for two years by that point. That's a serious relationship. They might as well have been living together by that point with marriage being the next step. Then at the end before she and Guy kiss, she says she hadn't been decently kissed since before she got together with Jimmy. It would've been nice for Tom Hanks to focus on Faye and Jimmy to show how they are when it's just the two of them. But with how Jimmy neglected Faye, you would think they had just been together for a few months rather than a few years.

You can see how this led into the next scene, when Mr. White shut down Jimmy in the recording studio and ordered him to record exactly what the label wanted. Before this, he maybe saw Jimmy as a young kid in a hurry, and who still had to learn the ropes. After this, there was zero respect for him as a human being.

In the liner notes of the movie's soundtrack, it actually expanded on the "Where are they now" portion seen at the end. It reveals that Jimmy left Playton and signed with another label as a solo artist. However, he failed to produce any hit records. Eventually, he's dropped from the label and goes back to Playtone with his tail between his legs. So he most likely returns to Playtone humbled and agrees to do things the label's way.

It’s seems clear to me it was Mr.White who arranged to have the “careful girls, he’s engaged” put on tv. He was probably trying to help springboard their stagnating relationship. I think at first Mr.White _thought_ Jimmy had class, but realized he was wrong and that Jimmy was just a self-absorbed prick.

Jimmy flipped out at the "engaged" caption on the screen because he knew he was being seen on a national level and wanted to keep his options open to the flood of women coming his way. Jimmy didn't want to tie himself down to one woman at that time. Even the hotel concierge knew that the young squire Guy was a better fit for Faye.

I think it basically was that Jimmy is one of those A-type personalities: he had to have some control over his creativity, and even though the band and one of his songs was tearing up the charts, deep down, he felt that he should have more control over things. Early on, we see him pushing for them to record "All my Only Dreams," which is a ballad that was moreso in the style that he seemed to want for "That Thing You Do," which became one of those happy-accident hit songs. Though we also see him trying to desperately have a say in the direction that the band is going, though as one can probably figure, it was only a matter of time until the band self-destructed. It was never really like they were planning to keep going forever, like TB Player who was mainly along for the ride, and was going into the Armed Forces soon. Of course, this clip was at the height of their popularity, and I figure if anyone would crack at that pinnacle, Jimmy would.

He was forced to do performances and play just one song which was transformed into a classic rock song. Jimmy was a true musician and he did not how the music industry works so he was obviously frustrated.

@80MWH You totally summed it up so well. Now when I watched this film as a grown up, I kinda understood that none of them was at fault. Not even Jimmy. It's just that he was too particular, too ambitious and yeah very talented. Right from the beginning, he wasn't that into Faye... not the way Faye was into him... it almost seemed one sided... Such relationships don't last long... It was bound to happen... Guy was a more relaxed personality and that's why he was more grounded, Lenny was in it for fun and TB was all for the armed forces... The huge popularity of their song That Thing You Do both made and broke them coz it highlighted their personalities and their personal differences more... Jimmy wasn't happy singing this one song round the clock n wasn't in it to make "snappy" songs which Mr White wanted to begin with... Even Guy was more into Jazz... And Lenny, well he just wanted a good partner and TB wanted to be in the armed forces... They were great together but they were bound to break up.
