CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When the band performs for the first time with Guy (Tom Everett Scott) on drums, he plays at a faster tempo, which gets the crowd dancing along.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Tom Hanks made his directorial debut in this bright comedy set in the mid-1960's about a rock group and their brief fling with fame. Guy Patterson (Tom Everett Scott) works as a salesman at his father's appliance store and plays the drums in his spare time, fancying himself a jazz musician. One day, a buddy of Guy's tells him a local rock band, The One-Ders (it's pronounced "wonders"), are in need of a drummer -- they have Battle of the Bands coming up and their usual timekeeper has broken his arm. Guy agrees to sit in, but when it's time to play their best original, a love ballad called "That Thing You Do," Guy lays in a sharp, driving beat that turns the tune into an uptempo pop-rocker. Lead singer Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech) isn't happy at first, but guitarist Lenny (Steve Zahn) and the nameless Bass Player (Ethan Embry) think the song sounds better that way -- and they notice the girls like it just fine. Soon people are actually requesting the song at their shows, and the One-Ders scrape together some money to press a single of "That Thing You Do" to sell between sets. A DJ puts the song on the radio, and opportunity knocks in the form of Mr. White (Tom Hanks), who works for the very major Play-Tone Records label. Play-Tone buys the rights to "That Thing You Do" and puts the band on the road as their song makes it way to the top of the national charts. But what can The Wonders (as Play-Tone have re-named them) do for an encore? And what should Guy do about his infatuation with Jimmy's girlfriend, Faye (Liv Tyler)? Real-life 60's obsessed rocker Chris Isaak has a small part as a recording engineer, and fans of real 60's garage bands will appreciate the wealth of small, accurately observed details (for example, halfway through the film, when a few "That Thing You Do" royalty checks have presumably kicked in, the band's inexpensive Danelectro guitars disappear and the Wonders are suddenly playing on brand new Fender gear -- the height of rock style in 1965).

Anyone who has played in a band knows that "oh no the drummer is going too fast" is a universal feeling.

Moe Purtill, drummer in the original Glenn Miller Orchestra, once said that during a ballad, no one could ever accuse him of dragging, because of they played any slower, they'd stop. When he asked Miller about, Miller said that "all the kids were on the floor, no room; holding close, romance. When they stop doing that, we'll pick'em up". I was fascinated with the way they directed this. It's really not easy to have one guy (the drummer) playing at one tempo and the guying doing harmony gradually catching up to him and intentionally getting ahead of the lead singer...who drags behind defiantly until finally realizes the song is working better than it ever had. Pretty masterful musical direction.

True, the guitar quality does get better in a few aspects, but the guitars they had here were no slouches either. There's a Gibson Les Paul Junior, a Silvertone 1457 (Red Burst, built by Danelectro [but did that exact guitar model exist to the public in the Spring of 1964? Its 1448 sibling did,]) and a Danelectro Bass. The biggest problem these instruments have is, you can't adjust the intonation (explained below) precisely. Even then, they still sound good. Intonation is where a string played open (not fretted; not pressed down) will be at the same exact pitch at the 12th fret. On good quality instruments, you typically want this to be adjusted as well as you can for the string gauges you're using, unless you're trying to imitate the finer details of players who didn't have that, imperfections and all. But with these cheap guitars, you just have to set the intonation as closely as you can for all of the strings, and then it'll probably still be a bit off-kilter. They can all be modified, so that you can adjust intonation, though. Also, as a minor note, I bought parts to build a guitar much like the Red Silvertone 1457 that Lenny's playing, but with the shorter neck that its 1448 sibling (same body shape) had. These Silvertone 1448, 1449 and 1457 models have their own interesting sound. It's perfect for early to late 60s "garage rock" songs; it sounds a bit like a Fender guitar, and also like a rubber band (which helps make it sound a bit endearing, like a 13 year old's guitar.)

You got to live and breathe the real rocker days, i'm a 90's/2000's lad and played in originals bands trying to 'make it', got a bit of attention and played some amazing shows but alas the rock gods didn't favour us! We grew up idolising 60's/70's/80's heroes and were always in awe of how good life must've been back then. My dad is your age and was a drummer too, he loves telling us about what it was like back then, everything was new and never been done before...to me it sounded like heaven!

It's kinda crazy how *_great_* That Thing You Do(the song) is. Most movies that explore the 60's music scene that write original music for it...the songs end up sounding quite stale and imitative...just warmed-over cliches. But _this_ song is legit cool. If it had been released in the 60s it _easily_ would have become a #1 hit. It does pack a *_lot_* of early 60s songwriting cliches into a neat 3 minute package...but it does so, not in a cloyingly nostalgic way, but in the way an actual young band truly in love with music would do it. It just sounds *_fresh_* as hell. :)

I love the details in this movie. The choice to include accurate instruments and gear for the different stages of the Oneders careers was really not necessary, but still super cool. Les Paul Juniors and Danelectros were budget guitars back then, and likely what the Oneders could afford at this time. Later when they make it big, they get new shiny Fender Jaguars, Jazzmasters and Jazz basses, very inline with Fenders marketing and endorsement model during that time period. Great movie.

The amazing thing about this movie is that the plot centers around a band recording a big hit in the 60's, and the actual song sounds like a big hit that would have been recorded in the 60's. There is no suspension of disbelief needed whatsoever.

This is similar to the story of the Beatles with "please please me " that when they changed it from a Roy Orbison - style ballad to a mad fast rock song it turned into their first #1 hit.

One thing I like about this movie is how each character resembles the personality of a Beatle. Their positions on each instrument are switched but Jimmy is Lennon, Guy is McCartney, Lenny is Ringo and T.B. Player is George. Very clever whether it was intended that way or not.

The movie may have seemed a little underappreciated at its release back on October 4, 1996. Not by my wife and me. We saw it four times before it left the theater by early-January 1997. The color pallette throughout That Thing You Do! is exquisite, especially when the scene shifts to Hollywood. I remember reading an article about the movie in Entertainment Weekly and it detailed getting the movie from the initial concept to the page and to the big screen. I also remember reading something to the effect that had Tom Hanks been a little younger, that he would have portrayed Guy Patterson in the movie. It rings true somewhat since Tom Everett Scott does resemble a very youthful Tom Hanks.

I remained convinced that this is one of the best soundtracks to accompany a movie, stylistically speaking, of all time. Every song you find on the soundtrack to the movie is perfectly sounded to suit a style of music from the 60’s era. Of course the main song “That Thing You Do” and the 4 other “Wonders” songs you can find fit the Beatles style of rock/sock hop/ballad music perfectly and is identical to what a rock band at that time would be playing. The backup artists songs, such as “Mr Downtown” by Freddy Fredrickson, “My World is Over” by Diane Dane, “Hold My Hand, Hold My Heart” by the Chantrellines, and “Time to Blow” by Del Paxton all fit the 60’s genres of swing pop, Easy Jazz, R&B soul, and classic Jazz respectively. Freddy is practically the representation of Frank Sinatra when he sings. The little things like the trumpet solo in “My World is Over” I feel fit so perfectly in the song and the time frame of the movie and each song just represents a different part of artistic music style in that time period. Whoever wrote all these songs is a genius.

This is a great movie, and the attention to detail is awesome. Listening to the soundtrack one sees that they did not just created some bits of music for specific moments, but they actually composed and arranged the complete songs. Also many details, two of my favourites being the evolution of their instruments (from cheap Silvertone guitars to Fender and Rickenbacker), and the jazz station interview. This last one, not only because of the "what is a pop band doing here?" mood, but also because of the "which artist popped your cherry?" question by the DJ. Dumb bass player takes the question literally and blurts out "THE CHANTRELLINES!"...my interpretation is that literally one of the singers from the group "popped his cherry" lol

I believe that this part of the movie, playing the song faster was inspired by the Beatles's "Please Please Me" John had the idea of a song Roy Orbison's style, but George Martin, The Beatles producer told them to play the song faster, and guess what: that song was their first hit, just like this one on the movie!

He is a huge DC5 fan, gave a speech at the DC5's acceptance into the R&R HoF. He said he spent hours talking to Clark about the career of the DC5 and he used some of what he learned for the movie. Like the group in the movie, the DC5 were NOT professionals trying to make it big in show business. They were amateurs who didn't quit their day jobs until after their 2nd U.S. hit.

I love this movie I've seen it multiple times, even bought the director's edition with added scenes. As a musician I found the movie quite entertaining because they're so much on point stuff, When they 1st go to Pittsburgh and completely suck and blow it on stage... That's happened to every band at some point...R.E.M. even wrote a song about it..."Strange", The fact that Tom Hanks made such a quality movie with nothing in there being real is the mind blowing part to me... A lot of the songs of the other artists almost have a nostalgic feeling, and the whole thing is a time capsule that never was... Genius, truly underrated
