I wanna preface that I think gambling in my opinion is okay, the problem is taking advantage of people who don't have self control. At the end of the day you're an adult and you can do whatever you want with your money but it becomes a problem when there is almost zero regulations to control these gacha systems and companies can milk players dry without any consequences.

There is a guy who spent 200k usd on Diablo immortal then complained he couldn’t do any pvp because he couldn’t get into the lobbies because the power scale system (resonance) couldn’t find anyone in the same league as him, so he went onto RU-vid to complain (note this wasn’t the first game he spent stupid levels of cash on)

Thought he was going in on 'A Friend' when he did fastest max on RS3, or ODA with his degenerate staking.

Man RS3 is so sad. 95% of the time I play osrs, but I still like to log on to my rs3 account every now and again. There's so much cool stuff in that version of runescape, but the mtx is kinda like a shitty dark cloud that hangs over everything. Seeing other players with gear that comes from the treasure hunter chests, seeing all the mtx ads every time you log in, reading about mtx plans in every update blog... It kinda kills the magic for me. One good thing about it is it's a great tale of caution for osrs. If you give Jagex an inch on the mtx front, they'll take a mile, and before you know it 90% of the updates are just designed to get you to buy mtx. I don't care if it starts as just cosmetics, the minute they push any mtx beyond bonds into the game is the minute I quit. There's plenty of other games out there.

I think what companies with MTX's should do is do an ID verification on people (this will get rid of multiple accounts) and don't let anyone under 21 spend money on the game. When you make an account, you're set how much money you wanna spend in that month and the game will stop you from buying anything else for that whole month if you go past that limit (Max being 500).

I'm very proud of myself for not spending a single IRL penny while playing RS3, and getting some of the high-end accomplishments in the game in the process. I started out tanning black dragonhide for my very first bonds and gradually training slayer until I could sustain myself. Now I'm worth almost 20b and I'm well on my way to the master max cape, all without spending a dime! I just enjoy the game, and I'd hate to see it die to something as stupid as MTX...

I'm a rs3 player I been playing since 08 . I know it's die slowly but it's my type of game I grow up playing it . I probably spent like 700 dollars since 08 . I work for my gps now I got the alts and few main so I can buy bonds with gps so not spending 🤑 anymore

I've never had an addiction problem with video game transactions, but I've spent enough time and money in D2 that I need to make a point: that armor set across 3 characters is ~$60 ($20 per class), but the real money they make is seasons (the content of the game) and seasonal events like Halloween or Solstice. All D2 content available in store right now would cost you $10k. Now, as an RS3 player who never felt the NEED to spend money on the game outside membership, I'll confidently say I played OSRS back before RS3 and I've never regretted my switch. Sure combat sucks, but it sucks in all Runescape variants so that's not new. Skill grinding is waaay easier in RS3. And even if it did get easier in OSRS, I like the ornaments and skins they offer in RS3. Not enough to buy them, but enough that I keep an eye out for when there's a sale.

Just to be clear, those 600 employees AVERAGE 30,000 pounds, that is pathetic considering the impact the Jmods have on the game, and considering that that is the average, that means the actual Jmods (who are not the managers) are probably getting paid even less than 30,000 pounds. Kind of sad considering how they have single handedly carried the games success.

The problem is the players, not the company. The company is just that, a business. They are in it to make money, by whatever means nessicary. If they went and made decisions by "what feels right" they would be a bad business. It is not their responsibility to babysit, as you said. The problem is the players who can't control themselves. It is 100% on them. If you know you can't help but gambling, don't play a game with gambling. Thats it. That is 100% on you, the one with the problem.

Ive been playing runescape for 15 years now and ive never spent any money on mtx only membership for the past 10 years. This year will be the first year i will be able to pay my memebership with gp. Back in the 90s post gaming crash of the 80s there was a huge push to introduce MTX into games but the player base couldn't afford it or just didnt buy the add ons. Why!? Because they didnt have mental helth issues like we do today! That and it was CULTURAL inapropriate to do so. Now when i look at old school rs all i see is a joke! Its not 06 runescape anymore and the community is worse than in 06.

Great video, I agree with the sentiment. I also hate P2W and microtransactions in games we already pay for upfront. Just want to say something about the beginning tho... You talk about gambling, and mention Diablo as being "notorious for their gambling prowess". Then you show Diablo 4 and the disgusting microtransaction shop, but that has nothing to do with gambling. You are not gambling any money, you get what you pay for. The same when you mention being able to buy pwoer to "compete with other players", you're showing (what I assume is) a black market site for in game currency. I just want to say, that if we are going to fight against predatory microtransactions, gambling, and P2W, then we need to be clear and honest with how we use these words. We can not misuse the words, because we end up watering them down into meaningless nothing. In order for the words "Pay to win" to hold any meaning, we can't use them like this. We just end up watering them down into "Every single game is pay to win, because you can pay someone to beat the game for you". We also can not call microtransactions gambling. There are so many things we can say against these practises, there is no need to use extreme cases, or lie about how things work. Just not a fan of misusing and watering down important words like that.

Not a fan of D4, but any amount of money you spend in that game does not help you "compete" with other players. It's all entirely cosmetic. The armor you buy doesn't become "useless", it's a skin. Also the only currency you can purchase with real money can only be used for cosmetics, you cannot buy character power.. So the screenshot at 1:32 is entirely not in the game.

If you have played the game for as long as I have you just look at the items you are getting as reward and think to yourself "well all of this isn't even GREAT to say the least, FAR OFF from beeing insanely useful" lol. Most ppl who complain about mtx and it beeing gambling have no idea what they are talking about because they see free xp and go "OMFG LOL". In reality xp in RS3 has long lost its value and honestly that is OK because nowadays there is pretty much a method for every skill in this game that allows you to EARN 1m xp / hr by just playing the game. Also there are no leaderboards, after 200m in all skills there is no competition and there is tonns of players that have already earned this WAY WAY before you so no point really in doing that comparison either. Cosmetics that cost multitude of millions of gps can be just bought in the GE (trading hall of runescape) so again if you play the game long enough there is no need for gambling and chasing those 0,1% droprates from Treasure Hunter. So if you wanna gamble for the sake of gambling it is your very own responsibility, it is not predatory and the benefit of doing it is also INSANELY minor. You are literally ruining your immersion of the game if you buy xp when ur fresh, missing alot of the low and mid level sector which is actually quiet fun in RS. If you are a high lvl players and resort to buying xp you are either insanely desperate, have no time irl but have cash or you are just an idiot who doesn't know the fundamentals of the game despite of having 1b total xp or more. Oh by the way your ammount of xp and achievements ingame does not mirror ur intelligence ingame. I have seen people with more xp and more achievements than me which actually know shockingly little about certain things. So to break it down, MTX in RS3 is not a huge deal, it is your responsibility to see it is gambling and check the probabilities (which are literally there for you to see) before spending 200$ and then wondering why you didn't hit that 0.001% chance cosmetic override you wanted. My tp, dont buy keys just use ur brain and use the resources and methods provided ingame and / or the wiki to see how to progress your account naturally. If you want cosmetics don't get them right away or even dumber gamble for them no, set up a goal which is this cosmetic and then make gold ingame naturally as you progress your account and ur skill and then finally spend your excess gold on that cosmetic which you wanted a couple weeks / months ago also maybe because u had time thinking about it you realized you don't even really want it as bad as you did X ammount of time ago or when it came out. To say something about the stated ivndividual in this video, this is an extreme and sad example but also I blame the credit card companies or in general lending services which make it insanely easy for people especially at young age to go in debt and amass a TON of it before actively countering against that. As a maxed rs3 ironman, yes, the game is absolute dogshit and not playable if you don't have an ironman account. (We can't do MTX for in-game progress, only cosmetics). The Fortnite skin you showed is a bonus to buying the Nintendo Switch bundle, you're not just buying a Fortnite skin you're buying an entire Nintendo Switch, additionally the reason it's "$400" right now is because people are trying to scalp their rarity but Epic games has nothing to do with that, it's actually just a recolor of a cheap skin. Also, the $220 armor you're showing is only a part of a 50 item set, you're not buying just the armor and even additionally on top of that you could buy it all using in-game bright dust. People that spend money "gambling" on mtx with open for everyone to see probabilities are stupid and I'll explain why. If you have a cosmetic promo item with purple rarity and it has a 0.01% probability then that would mean ON AVERAGE it could take you up to 10.000 keys to hit that item atleast once. Now let's assume this cosmetic item is new to the game and popular aswell so it costs 500 million gold on the grand exchange. How much money would it cost to buy 10.000 keys in hopes to gamble for the items vs how many Bonds would you have to buy to get 500m gp and just buy the item off the grand exchange 100% of the time? Well simple. bonds currently are worth between 80-100m so let's assume the lower end to be the least biast possible, that would mean you'd need to purchase 6 and a quarter Bond to be able to buy it on ge. Which costs about 44€ total (price checked TODAY). Now what would 10.000 keys cost? I think we don't even have to do the math to realize the stupidity behind it, even if you get INSANELY lucky and you "only" need 1000 keys to hit the item you would still spend way over 200€.

The sad thing is RS3 isnt a new server release. It was what our beloved long legacy characters evolved into. I only have one character and not interested in redoing all the work I did and accomplished. (I know a WoW friend that makes a new character per week for the last 20 years) Not my interest. I like the feeling of *pride and accomplishment* of having high/max stats when I got them. Honestly when osrs was announced I was hoping my stats for my character from the year of the build would be imported. Would of been my in.😅
