I spent my early childhood in Corbin, Kentucky. The highway that goes by the town is I-75, and not I-70. I-70 goes by the town where I currently live -- Denver, Colorado. Word to the wise: In the United States, an interstate highway that ends in an even number runs (generally) east-west across the country. I-70 runs from Baltimore, Maryland to Cove Fort, Utah. An interstate that ends in an odd number runs north-south. I-75 runs from suburban Miami, Florida, past Corbin and up to Lexington, Kentucky (where I was born), and finally ends at the border with Canada, near Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. As for Colonel Sanders, the herbs and spices he used comprised a variation on the sort of herbs and spices commonly used in southeastern Kentucky. The word around Corbin was that he adopted the mixture used by one of his cooks, at the original restaurant. This did, indeed, differ from the "original recipe" chicken the management at KFC claimed. However, while the advertising focuses on the herbs and spices, that's not what made Sanders a rich man. When starting fresh, fried chicken takes a long time to cook. The meat is reasonably dense and must be cooked all the way through (*nobody* eats rare chicken), for all sorts of reasons. Such thorough cooking would normally make it really easy to dry out the chicken, and leave it tough and tasteless, so all the really good Kentucky cooks (including most of the women in my family) learn from an early age what to do. Take a cast-iron pan, grease it with Crisco or some other oil, and heat that up. Then, take the chicken and roll it in flour with the herb and spice mixture desired. Drop the chicken into the hot, oily pan and sear one side. Flip it over, and sear the other side. For an electric stove, pull the pan off the heat, cover it with a lid, and then turn the heat down to simmer. Once the burner is low enough, put the iron pan with the seared chicken back on the heat and let it cook thoroughly. (For gas stoves, just turn the flame down under the pan and put the lid on.) This cooking method produces delightfully cooked chicken with a crisp crust on the outside, and tender and juicy meat on the inside. It also takes about 15-20 minutes to finish. Traditional Kentucky fried chicken is *not* "fast food." What Sanders did -- and what you may have wanted to mention -- was to figure out how to make chicken a viable option for a fast food franchise. You did touch upon it, when you mentioned the pressure-cooker. Sanders figured out how to use the pressure-cooker to cook the chicken *almost* all the way through while keeping the meat tender and juicy. He could then take the nearly-complete chicken out, and put it in a refrigerator. When needed, he'd pull out the chicken, roll it in the batter, and drop it in the fryer for a few minutes. Voila. Chicken becomes a fast food option. The pressure-cooker made Col. Sanders rich; not the herbs and spices. :) Every fast food chicken place either chops the chicken up into fine bits, or uses some variation of Sanders' method.

That really is how the law works, sometimes. Certainly at that time. It may seem counterintuitive, but it does have some merit. You see, the guilty party is declared to be whoever escalates the situation to active violence first. You and I could stand 2 inches apart, screaming at the top of our lungs about some disagreement. That's fine. But the second one of us puts a hand on the other, It is now violent, and that person is considered the violent aggressor, and the other person is within their rights to retaliate. In this case, by law, the 3 men with guns drawn were not the ones who actually initiated the violence. Prior to the first gunshot, it was little more than a standoff. It was that one single trigger pull coming back at them, that changed the scenario into an active violent confrontation, and thus, made him the guilty party, and Sanders and the others legally defensive. The law might be slightly different today, with merely producing a weapon in violent threat being a charge all its own. In today's world, they'd have ALL gone to prison. 1 for murder or manslaughter, and 2 for unlawful use of a firearm. But the latter is a lesser charge, and would have been a far lighter sentence. Law is funny, that way.

Pretty simple. The captain is in charge, and the guy below him is "left tenant" in his absence, i.e. holding his place. "Lieu" is just the French way of saying it; he is tenant in lieu of a captain. Quite a lot of military ranks and terminology are derived from French. @another3997
@another3997 3 года назад
I'm sure you won't be the only one to do it, but I think you missed the point that was being made. Perhaps studying the general principals of law might help.

@the1exnay
@the1exnay 3 года назад
The first one to shoot isn't necessarily the one who instigated. Imagine it from his perspective: three people who are clearly very upset with him and ready for a fight. Can he be certain that retreat is a valid option? It might be, might not. Is he willing to risk it? Would mean giving up his cover and with it any chance of winning the fight. No, he'll stand his ground so he can live. But there's three of them, he still needs an advantage in order to survive. It's decided, if a fight becomes clearly inevitable he has to get the first shot or he's dead. So he was kind of backed into a corner. But then look at the other perspective, if they don't want a gunfight they have many options: they could call the police, they can retreat, they can work to make sure he doesn't feel backed into a corner. They're on their home turf, they came when they were prepared, they had greater numbers. They had so many advantages and with it so many more options (and because of their advantages the lone guy had so few safe options) Like, I'm not saying that the colonel was in the wrong or that the guy who shot first was in the right. But i am saying is it's not that clear cut
@dawsonwilliams546

@@the1exnay he was committing property destruction. He was in the wrong. He brought it to physical violence with a deadly weapon. He brought a weapon to commit property destruction. He was evidently a volatile man and if he came upon a franchise not cooking his chicken properly, was known to throw all their equipment out into the parking lot. Sanders' innovation was the use of a pressure cooker. People travelling on the new Interstates wouldn't have to stop for 1+ hours to have chicken cooked for a decent meal. Instead, a few minutes in the pressure cooker did the trick and the travelers would be back on the road.
