there is a far worse plane: the he162 spatz. every loss that i know of was cuased by it being a hard to handle plane wich ment that it failed its own competition. there are no confirmed air victories by it as well wich means that it was the only plane to ever see active combat and only lost.

Minor correction. The SBD dauntless was a dive bomber, not a torpedo bomber. I think it often gets mistaken for the TBD Devastator, a similar looking plane from the same era, with a similar sounding name, that actually was a torpedo bomber, and flew in conjunction with the Dauntless against Japanese carriers in the battle of Midway. ... The Dauntlesses did well... The devastators did not.

There’s been this one dude in Soviet Union who pulled off a similar stunt, but during the Second World War. His name was Alexander Sylvanksiy and the plane he built was almost a complete copy of some other designer’s concept and just as Christmas he had to saw off a few centimeters off of the propeller in order for it not to dig into the ground. The plane was called ИС-220.
@j.w.greenbaum
@j.w.greenbaum 3 года назад
He knocked off a late model Polikarpov I-16 with a bigger engine. Of course, fortunately for humanity, the second the military test pilot saw him sawing material off the propeller, he managed to get the test postponed since he assumed that there was a problem with either the propeller or the engine...which in turn got Sylvanskiy's design investigated and canceled.

@@MJ-zo5gb I work in the truck industry. Electric trucks are a reality since decades for very short range hauls, like inside an harbour. They don't make any sense for long or even local delivery for simple weight constrictions. Electric cars or trucks are lot heavier than diesel ones. This means less usable load. This means more trucks and more trips are required to move the same amount of goods. So, they pollute more. This holds true for most Tesla cars: due to the huge battery, they pollute (in their whole life circle) more than a diesel car. Small electric cars are eco-friendly. Big ones are not. Musk genius is perfet marketing and investing in heavily subsidized sectors with old ideas (the hyperloop scam, the reusable rocket, the electric car...)

Musk is the perfect scam artist: Tesla cars have a small and declining market share, but they're treated like some kind of copernican revolution as so his market value is through the roof. He's playing around with reusable rockets, a technology Nasa experimented upon in the early '90s before declaring it feasible, but not worth it, yet he's getting huge subsidies - while not paying taxes. And I'm sure he' s in NO WAY using is wealth to push laws that profits him...

G'day Simon, then there was the US made, Brewster Buccaneer light bomber. Developed in 1939 when the free world was desperate for combat aircraft for the war that had just started, the Brewster Corporation developed the SB2A (known by the USAAC as the A-34). It had up to 5 variants and when sold to the RAF, desperate for any kind of combat aircraft, they took delivery of the Buccaneers, calling them the Bermudas. From the start massive faults manifest as a much slower speed than expected, extremely poor handling conditions, requiring the pilots to continually adjust the controls just to keep the aircraft in steady, level flight. There was also a slew of electrical problems while the overweight aircraft chewed up fuel and had its range curtailed. There were also problems with the aircraft’s weapons, including their lightweight nature. As desperate as the world's air forces were for combat aircraft, the Buccaneer/Bermuda was the only aircraft produced during WW2 that went directly from the factory to various scrap yards around the world. Some were used only to haul targets for gunnery practice or as flying base 'hacks' to train new pilots coming to a squadron. The Royal Australian Air Force heard, first hand from RAF pilots, how awful the Buccaneer was, cancelled its order before they were delivered. Only the USMC used the Buccaneers operationally for any length of time, yet they did get rid of them as soon as a replacement aircraft could be found. Brewster, the company was poorly managed with the principals knowing little of aviation and because top notch aircraft workers and engineers were snapped up by the larger companies, Brewster was staffed by inexperienced workers who were treated so badly that they spent much of their time out on strike, an extremely rare event during the war. By late 1943, early 1944 the Buccaneers had been rejected by all Allied air forces and production was halted. Brewster also made the Buffalo, a small fighter/trainer that was marginally better than the totally inadequate AB2A; dubbed by many aviation experts at the time and later historians as 'the worst aircraft of WW2'. Thanks for the video on the 'evil Dr Christmas'. Cheers, BH

@TheHomelessDreamer

Context matters. The F-104 was not a particularly good aircraft design but it performed reasonably well. The Germans chose to make it a multi purpose plane, requesting modifications from Lockheed to produce the F-106G variant. They then flew it at low altitudes, with pilots with far less experience than their US counterparts, and the results are as you cited. It was more a case of poor doctrine than a crappy aircraft. That is demonstrated by the fact only the Germans experienced such a high rate of fatalities. Sidenote: I used to see an F-104 regularly fly in and out of NASA Ames/Moffet Field in the mid to late 80's.
@skace13

@kvant13

That was more due to the Germans having less experienced pilots fly it in a role it was VERY unsuited for rather than a fundamentally bad design. Though it wasn't exactly a great design either.
