Honestly thought the Sleepwalkers were a take on Egyptian Vampires, and the cats being guardians of the afterlife could just spot evil.

Sekhmet is an Egyptian God who is depicted as a lioness who drank blood. That's probably his inspiration
@louisvictor3473
@louisvictor3473 Год назад
@@SjofnBM1989 I think they are basically a perversion of her. Sehkmet is basically Hathor's enraged form (Hathor is usually depicted more human-esque) originally at humanity's wrong doing but she goes out of control and Ra needs to trick her into getting very drunk, chilling out and going back to normal. Hathor is herself a solar goddess (and a goddess of sexuality, she has a ton of children with various gods), and in Sekhmet form she is said to breath fire. So the vampires shapeshifting between werefeline and human forms, drinking symbolically innocent or pure "life force", as well as being very sexually active but apparently being not that good at reproducing, it is all like a mockery of her one night stand with unwielding rage. This also probably explains why cat attacks can cause them to combust, as they're basically acting as a much more tame and controlled avatar or conduit for her and her righteous vengeance - she is just showing the wannabes how it is really done.

Cats in King’s universe are almost like supernatural agents, sometimes like guardian angels for the humans they love. They have psychic powers, see things we don’t see, and have both an ancient wisdom and a ferocity that belies their fuzzy shape. King loves cats and has/has had pet cats in real life. He was also heavily influenced by Lovecraft (as someone else mentioned below), who felt about the same way about cats. It probably seemed obvious to him that cats would be the ones who would both spot and fight the monsters, and the fact that sleepwalkers sort of resemble cats was just an extra element of their grudge match. On top of that, there is an old superstition that cats can fatally steal humans’ breath while they’re sleeping (particularly babies). The fact that this is sort of what sleepwalkers do to their victims in the movie, and cats do not, might be intended to hint at an age-old antagonism between them, where the cats have a long history of maintains their guard against and protecting the humans from the real breath-stealers (this theme was also used in Cat’s Eye; the main feline character, General, is also a really good example of the cat-as-guardian-angel theme).

At a guess, the reason why cats are the enemies of the sleepwalkers is HP Lovecraft, who loved cats and used them in more than one story as being the enemies of otherworldly forces, most notably in "The Cats of Ulthar." King is highly influenced by Lovecraft. The cats of Ulthar can do most of what happens in Sleepwalkers, including a swarm of cats finishing otherworldly monsters off. I mean, this is a poorly done "The Cats of Ulthar."
@sarasteege2265

I like this idea, and there is a lot of superstition around cats having (at least) one paw on spiritual or supernatural stuff. Whether it's staring at walls (because "ghosts", not at aaaaall looking for bugs), or being a witch's familiar. :X Also, I'd like to point out that at the ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6_1s-3DFiT4.html there's the 'lore' book with a depection of a sleepwalker and a bunch of cats surrounding it, there are flame around the sleepwalker. So...maybe the cats attacking itself triggers ignition? Supernatural defeat! Fluffy, Moose, Mister Wiggles, Tiger use feline mob attack! Bonus Fire Damage! It's super effective!

@@chaossmith3864 No, but that is... kinna the plot of Sleepwalkers, with the sleepwalkers are some nasty cat-killing old people to whom collective feline justice is administered. Is it the same story? No. "The Cats of Ulthar" is much better. But the hostility of the cats towards the cat-killing sleepwalkers and the ending share similarities with "The Cats of Ulthar." To me, it very much feels like a Lovecraft adaptation in the vein of The Reanimator, where a bunch of weird sexualized content is introduced because Lovecraft's stories are resistant to screen adaptation.

My theory is that some ancient cats made a deal with some demons for this power and so normal cats resent them for it. I dunno, best I got. It's all just magic, and it's got unexplained rules. OK, just a note, turns out there's a lion faced Egyption Godess called Sekhmet who may be considered the world's first vampire. Although she did a lot more then these two. Ra sent her to deal with any mortals conspiring against him and she got a taste for blood. So after nearly emptying Egypt, he decided probably needed to do something about her so he poured red dyed alcohol into the Nile. Having turned the river red, she finds it had a drink, thinking it blood and passes out. After she wakes up calmer and probably a wicked hangover, she agrees to go home, do not pass go and don't collect 200 pints of blood to go.

I'll never forget the audience in the theater having a mixture of cheering and laughing when the cats came to the rescue. But there wasn't really laughter until that point so people were engaged in the movie. I enjoyed your puns. Cheesy but fun because there's still sense of optimism and innocence in your voice. No too cool for school from you, you're just enjoying yourself. I can dig it!

I'd love to see you (or anyone) talk about Rose Red. It's definitely one of my favorite Stephen King original movies and even has a prequel novel (not written by King) to go into the origins of the house and the family. It is a really long one though, on par with The Shining miniseries, but I think it deserves to be talked about.

Hey, i thought i was the only one with a cat named like that! My cat's name is Nemo, The Lab Assistant! He is the assistant of Dr Mörri and they often experiment with my nerves, the size of their stomach and the friction between carpet and floor. I hate it, but i love them especially because Nemo has also discovered my nerves ease up when he purrs and sleeps on my lap. Great to get more corn, just in time for halloween!

Just realized-the actress & actor playing Tanya's parents are the same duo who played Ferris Bueller's (the film from a few years earlier) parents: Lyman Ward & Cindy Pickett. I don't recall even hearing of this movie, so your overview is educational & amusing (I'm familiar with most of King's published/written works). Oh, and of course Ron Perlman had to be in this LOL Thank you for sparing us gruesome harmed animal imagery, I adore cats and seeing anything bad happen to animals will keep me from watching stuff I might otherwise check out. Only ran across your channel a week or two ago & am getting a kick out of it thus far. Think it was due to doing a search for the old timey mystery series Columbo (a favorite of mine, growing up-along w/Murder, She Wrote).

I remember when this came out. I saw it in the theater and remember enjoying it in a bad way, but that's because I'm a lifelong Stephen King fan. The movie version of Graveyard Shift is very much in the same vein as Sleepwalkers, thought it IS based on a King story, the movie goes off the rails. The late 80s/early 90s were the golden age of questionable-quality Stephen King movies.
@JerzCe73
@JerzCe73 Год назад
Stephen King has immense respect and fear for cats. Many see cats as supernatural protectors (Like myself), and if you notice any time there is a cat in a Stephen King project, they are always powerful. He wanted to show that more than fleshing out the lore of the Sleepwalkers themselves.
