As a physician, while he was extremely skilled, he wouldn't take any cases where he might not "Win". In the end he chose a solution that would require him to lose over and over and over again.
Actually what he did was the equivalent of saving your game before fighting the final Boss, so that you never completely lose - there's always another chance.
@@frankcastle1221 Some say early artwork "suggests" Strange was Asian, but this was never explicitly stated, and in his origin story he clearly is White.
His confrontation with the Ancient One about him killing a man, which violates EVERY oath he had sworn is a good insight into his character. He was arrogant, full of himself, selective on who he chose to work on, but his Oath still governed him. "Primum non nocere". First, do no harm.
@@DragonbIaze052 Well, Doctor Strange still didn't abandon that oath completely. He still always prefers to just trap his opponents and not kill them unless it is very very necessary. Doctor Strange still has one of the lowest kill count in entire MCU.
@@NeetSheth True, but I'd argue that's more to do with just how rampant and thoughtless the killing is for a large part of the MCU. Steve, Bucky, Sam, Thor, Valkyrie, Rhodey, and Carol were all in wars, so they'd all have a higher kill count. Iron Man kills people constantly with no hesitation. All of the Guardians sit somewhere between pirates and mercenaries, and killing people is basically a punchline for them. The Widows, Clint, Moon Knight, Shang-Chi, and the Dora Milaj are all professional killers. But the other end of the spectrum is just as just as represented. Hulk and Wanda only ever kill people when they aren't in control of themselves. Scott only kills a single person as a last resort to save his daughter's life (and it turns out that person didn't actually die). Spider-Man tried to kill Green Goblin and came up with the plan that killed Ebony Maw, but he didn't kill either. Jane, Kamala, Vision, Monica, and America don't kill anybody that I can remember. Strange is definitely on the lower end of the spectrum, but there's a high enough percentage of heroes below him that I wouldn't call him one of the lowest.
I mean technically the term doctor was to qualify someone of a certain level of education and then later used for people who practice medicine after completing that level of education so, yeah he will always be doctor
Many physicians do not hold a doctorate. So that people tend to all call them "Doctor" is quite wrong. But if Stephen Strange has a doctorate then the line from the "Ancient One" "Not anymore..." is incorrect and shows that the writers made that same mistake that so many people make.
Doctor Strange is one of my favourite MCU movies to watch over and over again. It has such a good cinematic formula that keeps you entranced all throughout the movie 😊😊😊
Benedict Cumberbatch was amazing in this. And the music at the end when he goes up those stairs to the end credits was beautiful; feels like it symbolized his journey to hero. Also, the movie made me want a cloak of levitation badly!
As a kid and reading the comics, Dr Strange was one of my favorite characters, was so happy when they said the film was going to be made and they delivered really well. Your reaction was awesome, thank you so much!
Some of it. I didn't care for the Mirror Dimension stuff. It looked too much like Inception. To much like technology, and not enough like magic. But I loved those early scenes where the Ancient One throws him through all the visions. And the Dormammu scenes. I want to see more of Dormammu in the MCU.
@@PhilBagels My absolute favorite part was when The Ancient One was forming a spell and then it breaks into layers. The mirror dimension wasn't my favorite part either, I found it a bit too overwhelming, too much going on for any of it to really pop for me. Didn't look bad to me, just didn't look as amazing as I think the movie was hoping it would.
I went through a serious illness in 2016 and after 37 days bedridden in the hospital had to use a walker and learn how to walk again. My first day out of the hospital, I went to get a haircut and was too prideful to use the walker and barely made it from the waiting area to my barber's chair without collapsing. Fortunately I'm completely recovered and have been since a few months later, but it takes a lot of perseverance and humility. First you need to submit to the reality of your new situation and acknowledge your limitations and then you can start overcoming them.
They did experiments and found that people left alone with nothing to do will always chose to do something, even if the only thing to do is play with the machine that gives a painful shock. So, the most painful thing is boredom.
The movie doesn't do that time loop justice at all, its suspected that he spent countless ages battling Dormammu. Losing every time of course, but becoming a much more powerful sorcerer in the process.
I didn't realize that, that's actually a bit criminal that they didn't add a few more minutes to the film so everyone would understand that. At least so it wouldn't make every other wizard look slow, you know what I mean, it kinda takes away from the others, especially Wong.
the ending of this movie is underrated... I mean Doctor strange is the first superhero to win by trolling lol I mean who knows how many times he died how much he suffered before dormammu gave up
Another kickass reaction to another kickass movie, Mari!! Also: The ‘Green-Witch” vs “Gren-Itch” pronunciation IS indeed one of those things where english is just weird. I am from Tennessee originally and there is a town there called Maryville. Locals call it something like “Mer-vul”. We can always tell someone is NOT from around there when they say MARY-ville….
Dr Strange is one of my favorite Marvel characters in no small part because of his Pink Floyd connection. Interstellar Overdrive is used in the movie but the comic/band connection goes clear back to the 60's.
Now, imagine the way he portrayed that cool calculating confidence when addressing Spock from the vengeance bridge, but imagine blue skin instead, with a white outfit…and you have a firm case of him being PERFECT for playing live action Grand Admiral Thrawn… Sadly the interviewer who spoke to him about it made reference to “extensive facial makeup/prosthetics” as opposed to simply saying, “blue face paint”…would have been absolutely perfect
When it was announced that Benedict Cumberbatch was being eyed to play Doctor Strange I thought, "Yes! This is right up there with casting Robert Downey Junior as Tony Stark!" and I was right. If I remember correctly they wanted him so badly that even moved principle photography back by about 6 months so he would be able to do it (he was still filming "Sherlock Holmes" for the BBC at the time). So glad they did that because, like Robert Downey Junior, I really can't imagine anyone else in the role. By the way, this was also released in 3D in theaters. Those dimension bending scenes were off the charts in 3D!
I like Dr. Strange a lot for being the first hero to really bring "magic" into the MCU. Obviously Wanda had her powers but there wasn't any mysticism around it, she just had telekinetic and telepathic abilities. And Benedict Cumberbatch is a great actor so it's very enjoyable watching Stephen's journey
The Ancient One choosing to die in that moment reinforces life's greatest lesson to Doctor Strange letting him know "it's not all about him", perfectly sets his course to completing his arc and he truly becomes a hero worth routing for in the future of the MCU.
Great reaction as always. I was also so delighted with how well each movie is done, even as expectations stay so hi. With Madds Mikleson in this, I think that's one of Marvels secrets. Casting a high level respected actor in a secondary role.
No spoilers but he really helps out in the canon “What-if” show. Also in Infinity war you can actually see the cloak of levitation act with dismay to Peter’s film references on Maw’s ship.
@@FOXCYBORGNINJA Mary if you see this, this is a SPOILER. I love Doctor Strange and the cloak of levitation in What if, especially in the final episode!!
@@esmilloalexis Shit my bad 🤦♂️, I didn’t mean to potentially do that, I didn’t know replies are visible to Mary. I wish there was a way to do spoilers/blacked out text.
This is one of my favorite MCU movies. It's an epic. It starts with a man who has it all, loses it all, tries to get it all again while enduring self-discovery. Plus, I love a good superhero movie that tries to say something while still being an entertaining and action flick.
The Cloak of Levitation is my favorite relic/magical object/weapon of the entire MCU. It has touch memory - when it touches human skin, it instantly knows everything about u, everything that’s ever happened to u. It’s perfectly attuned to it’s wearers needs. It knows u better than u know urself & will assist u accordingly. Hence why it insisted on using the metal contraption on the wall to restrain & question Kaeciliius. It knew what Steven wanted to do.😃 Plus it’s cheeky & mischievous & it has a mind of its own. It thinks. It’s my baby.☺️
I didn't pick up on it at first but when his assistant on the phone tells him about an air force officer who was paralyzed while wearing some sort of experimental armor, he's talking about War Machine in Civil War.
Glad you're having fun with the MCU and it is fun re-watching them with you =) To your question about Guardians 2, I think most people consider it not quite as good as G1 but that bar is so high its hard to live up to. G2 is still great fun and surprising.
I love your commentary it was so good. Doctor Strange is my favorite superhero Ever! And I agree Dr Strange’s costume is Awesome and the clock is the best part.
Great react and review Mary ☺️👍🏼 Dr.Strange is such a great film and the special effects in this one are just amazing right! Benedict Cumberbatch is one of those great actors that can play any character but not get tied to that character, absolutely. Super enjoy your videos and l am always happy to see a new one come up (especially the GoT episodes) Keep up the fantastic content ☺️👌🏼
If you want more Dr. Strange, here's the Master of the Mystic Arts being repeatedly defeated by penguins (no spoilers): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9GHPNKUMf70.html
I hope that you continue the MCU journey with the Disney+ shows. They are so good and continue the story amazingly. They have so much heart. I cried more with the shows then I did the movies.
I saw Doctor Strange 3x in the movie theatre when it came out. It's my second favorite marvel movie, the first is Iron Man. I adore Doctor Strange. Loved your reaction.
Bit sad she couldn't view it in 3D, but I understand; viewing 3D movies at home hasn't become super accessible yet. This movie was literally MADE for 3D though, like they literally made two copies of every CGI model specifically to animate it in 3D.
PlayStation VR can do stereoscopic 3D, so if you have a PSVR and 3D Blu-rays go for it. Only problem is the resolution is not as crisp. That said though. when people go to a 3D cinema showings most people have no clue, the best seats in the house to get the best 3D picture are the seats right in the middle. Basically if you have a PSVR and PS4 keep them don’t sell or trade them because the PS5 doesn’t do 3D blurays and there’s no information if they will in the future noir is there any information if the PSVR 2 will do 3D blu-ray’s. Alita battle angel, Ghost in the shell 2018 and avatar look awesome in 3D.
Rachel McAdams was reportedly offered the role of Pepper Potts for the first Iron Man movie. Rachel McAdams was Irene Adler in the Sherlock Holmes movie with RDJ.
The airforce guy that fell from the sky that he turned down the case as he was driving was probably Rhody. Imagine THAT conversation between Strange and Rhody after they figure out Strange refused to try to help. But then again, since he outright refused Rhody's team was not waiting for the Doctor to arrive to operate. Meanwhile, the doctor was stuck first in his wreck, then being in an OR as a patient. That way they both were getting care.
Even though I'm not per say a big fan of BC, he was the right pick for this role. I do enjoy how he can go head to head with Stark because they in many ways are a fair bit alike. I really mostly loved the SFX visuals in this movie, it was awesome to watch it in the theater when it came out. 😁🎥🎬
I believe the five are the Space stone from the Tesseract, the Mind stone from Loki's scepter currently in Vision's forehead, the Reality stone from the Aether, the Power stone from the Orb (ordinary humans can't hold it, it destroys them) and the Time stone in Strange's possesion.
My favorite MCU solo movie and Doctor Strange is my favorite MCU hero. Benedict Cumberbatch was a perfect casting. If you haven’t watched BBC Sherlock I highly recommend it. Eric is also a new Netflix limited series for him that I enjoyed. He’s a great actor.
Hi Mary, First of all congratulations on Graduation, I hope you will consider watching Blood Diamond movie, it has Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead and it's about conflict diamonds smuggling from Africa. It's amazing movie which you will definitely enjoy
I love the character building arcs that takes a arrogant big headed or egotistical character like Dr Stephen strange or Tony Stark or Thor and breaks them down to build them back up again better more Humble and worthy of their powers to become true Heroes, Guardians 2 is good but not quite as good as the first one.
@@mikemath9508 humor was shit in guardians 2. Mostly forced and cringe. 1 was was better with jokes and funny situatuons. And Humor is my main focal point in guardians, so guardians 2 is among the worst mcu movies for me.
Doctor Strange is humble for the first 15 minutes of his training, then he goes back to being arrogant. The moment he understood even the most basic aspects of magic, he rushed himself ahead to the most advanced parts because he was certain he was better than literally everybody else around him. Who he is as a person never changed.
I wish you could have seen this one on the big screen, very impressive. The film is very different from the comic book, there wasn't all the martial arts it was more spells and incantations, astral travel yes but to other dimensions as in the last segment of the film. There wasn't all this "Inception" effects either. I can still remember "the Crimson Band of Cyttorak" and "by the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth". I had to look up others: "By the Flames of the Faltine!" "By the Sons of Satannish!" "By the Ruby Rings of Raggadorr!" "By the Ageless Vishanti!" "By the Vapors of Valtorr!" "By the Eye of Agamotto!" Wong was his servant in the mansion (the sanctum sanctorum). He has a girlfriend from another dimension, her name is Clea. The cloak didn't have a will of its own and the Ancient One was an old man, not a woman. Also he formed the Defenders team with Hulk and Namor, the Sub-Mariner who hasn't been introduced in the films (along with Capt. America & the Human Torch they were the oldest heroes back in WWII).
Even for native English speakers, the names of English towns are still weird. If I hadn't heard them pronounced before I'd never guess them from the spelling.
The Editor put a list when Mary asked "How many of the Stones have we seen so far?" " ... We have seen 5 so far : Tesseract Lokis Scepter Aether (Thor 2) Orb in Guardians (The Power Stone) The one in Dr. Strange (The Time Stone) ... " My question is this :: which one of these is the Mind Stone - the one we saw put into Vision? The Mind stone is Yellow The Time Stone is Green The Power Stone is Purple The Aether is Red The Scepter AND the Tesseract are both Blue, so are they both the same stone? The Last one being the Soul Stone from that faraway Planet, Can't remember it's color, but I feel like there might be an overlap here, as mentioned the Tesseract and the Scepter feel like maybe the same one?
Non-native English teachers often get things wrong, I've noticed. Which makes me wonder how badly I was taught French as a child (though at least my French teacher was Dutch speaking, so maybe she knew better).
_Oh, wow!_ I really like the little cartoon/drawing with your new channel name and the film clip insert! 💜🎶 And the music as well (it sounds really good in my headphones, plus I'm a sucker for synth). 9:37 _"…That was so unnecessary."_ 🤣 Very sneaky (19:07). Making us rewind and pause like that. 😁 Btw, terrifc job with the ad. This may seem a *strange* request,¹ but I would like to hear you speak in your native language some time. Maybe just a few sentences, like in your introduction or your closer. 😊 And to answer your question, I preferred the first Guardians of the Galaxy over the second one. But that's only comparing them movie to movie. The second one still is fun and has a lot of really great moments. 🙋🏼♂️ _Byeeeee!_ ··•∶✺∶•·· ¹ ─ Pun intended. 😏
