Thatcher: "No! No! No!"

A heavily edited version of Margaret Thatcher's statement of 30 October 1990 to the House of Commons on the European Council meeting at Rome held on 27/28 October.
The Council was meant to discuss the Uruguay Round on General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade which was due to end in a few months but for which the EC had not developed a policy (alone out of the trading blocs). However the Italian Prime Minister, Giulio Andreotti, decided that the Council would refuse to discuss the GATT and instead push for the final stage in European Economic and Monetary Union in an attempt to get Thatcher to either agree or to force her to say "No" and thereby bring about her downfall by Europhile members of her party. Thatcher's hostility to a federal Europe led to Geoffrey Howe resigning from the Government on 1 November and to his fellow federalist Michael Heseltine's bid for the Tory leadership which brought down Thatcher on 22 November.
As Howe later said: "I wanted to change the policies, not the leader. But if that meant the leader had to go, then so it had to be". After the Rome Council a French official was asked whether it had failed. He answered: "On the contrary, the Council had been an outstanding success, since it had re-established an eleven-to-one situation in the Community and destabilised Thatcher at home".
Includes Eurosceptic interventions by Norman Tebbit (Con.), David Owen (Ind.), Ron Leighton (Lab.), Tony Favell (Con.), and Tony Benn (Lab.).

The Iron Lady was right about the European Monetary union. She said that she believed the Pound Sterling was an expression of sovereignty, and also that the EMU as it was proposed would be a federal Europe from the back door. Many countries have rushed into the euro adventure, often without popular support. Now most gouvernments regret is deeply, but are still not ready to admit that they regret it. Thank God Sweden took the wise move and stayed out. They're talking about Grexit now, but they will be talking about the EU-turn and EUxit very soon.
@GeorgeMonet
@GeorgeMonet 4 года назад
It does make sense that continental Europe would strive to become a federal Europe for its own protection and defense. One of the greatest fears all the little nations held was that their neighbors would attack them. Plus being one large federation gives each nation more international power than they would have individually.
@sean_haz
@sean_haz 2 года назад
@@GeorgeMonet it doesn't give nations any international power. It gives the "Federal Europe" as you called it more power. The individual countries would be giving up all their power to the federation.

Its again a littlebit silly to say that only Germany and France are rich. All these rich countries prosper because they had/have a REAL free market and didnt embrase a socialist utopia. The EU/EURO/ECB are thinking that they can manipulate the market rich again. With QE and such. It will not work and it will never work.

As an ardent admirer of Thatcher, I have to say that, as much as I disagree with him on so many matters, the points made by Tony Benn during this debate were very prescient to the politics of today. He may have been wrong on the role of the state as against the role of the individual in our society, but he was certainly correct on the role of Parliament as against the powers of supra-national organizations such as the EU. It's very sad that the Labour Party cannot muster more of his like in this day and age.

She was so right about Europe and the Euro, the way she put down Neil Kinnock was brilliant, if only May had the same ability in dealing with Corbyn she would be a better PM. It's interesting to note whilst Thatcher was deriding the EU and the Tories cheering her to the hilt, that John Major who was sitting behind her was very glum faced, that man along with Blair have a lot to answer for in getting Britain into such a mess with Europe. Tony Benn was superb, his vision on Britains relationship with Europe was correct in that he could see that the EU was going to take away our democracy, what a pity today's Labour Party don't see that, especially his drippy son Hilary Benn!

I totally disagree. It isn't her fault for the current situation we find ourselves in now. You may not like it but she helped to build this country up to become one of the leading financial hubs in the world. Its the actions of recent politicians that if anything has helped to cause problems. She improved the system and opened it up, and for that I thank her!

Margaret Thatcher - a REAL PRIME MINSTER. Not the spineless goons we have today. She knew what the EU was up to then and she was completely right. History has proven her right and will continue to do so. RIP Maggie.

She looks a great deal like my grandmother. We had our differences, but she proved to be right in every corner and I thank her for everything she has done for me. And in fact Margaret Thatcher fitted the position of Britain's grandma for 11 years.
