Chris Sawyer is one the greatest and most inspirational game creators and programmers of all time. I have been playing OpenTTD (Transportation Tycoon Deluxe) non stop for the last few weeks. The amount of depth he puts into his games (TTD, RCT) strictly remains unparalleled even today, in my opinion. Those games show their age in very small areas (ex: you simply have to know that ride values deprecate over time [although I suppose you could just surmise that through logic]), but they still stand as timeless classics. Chris Sawyer, as a developer, was truly ahead of his time, putting in so much extra unasked for (yet still greatly appreciated) effort into making his games so lively.

RC2 and OpenTTD are what I imagine the 'perfect game' to be. Fun, infinitely replayable, accessible to any audience and just made to work. I think Chris Sawyer is a programmer-first, designer-second. Playing his games always makes me feel like I'm looking into an intricate music box of mechanics and tools. He gives you everything you need to build what you want and the code is made to function just for that purpose.

That's might be the biggest advantage sprite-animated games have over modern gaming: since the sprites can't look realistic, they instead emulate the concept (in this case, of patrons and park workers). Once the player doesn't factor realism/level of graphic fidelity, the game hinges on execution of its core functions. To put it in another perspective, there isn't any jarring moment of outdated-ness graphics because the players have already accepted that games won't look great. IMO, this is why games such as SimCity, StarCraft, Age of Empire/Mythologies, the various Tycoon games and more are still around to this day, while many 2010s games are already forgotten by the community.

These old games let us be so creative, I will always love these isometric early 2000's late 90's titles... they were really a product of their time... a time of near perfection that seemed to be limited only by technical capabilities.
@tigerstripey4885
@tigerstripey4885 2 года назад
It's not in developers interest to create the perfect games, they will be out of work if they do this, hence these days we get loot boxes and intentional half finished, buggy products with decent graphics and cut scenes, this is to present the illusion that they are nowhere near perfecting game development. Sports simulations for example, if they created the perfect sports game, no further editions will be required, the user could just mod the heck out of it until infinity, losing companies billions.

It was always a guarantee of quick profit and guest increase.

My problem in RCT is making coasters that people don't think are artery-explodingly terrifying.

The few times your cursor drifted near a lazily ascending balloon I hoped you might pop it, but alas my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. Thanks for another amazing video as always.

Wow, I'm left somewhat speechless at the wonder of this video, which could be the greatest video about any challenge in RCT of all time. Thank you for this bewildering journey to pc game days past, thank you.

RCT2 guests are the most coriaceous and brave attraction park guests from all the times. They can walk hours and hours whitout taking pause, they can walk miles away just to buy a drink or go to the toilet, they are ready to spend days in the park alone whitout any socialization, can wait for a ride for a couple of hours, they go in roller coaster during thunderstorms, but never let them alone for a swimming. XD

So many memories... I don't think I can say that I ever finished a challenged, but I can tell you that if you make a ride that lets you off on a path not connected to a park exit you can set the prices to ridiculous levels on the food and bathrooms and let the profit roll in.

Imagine taking the time to zoom in on bloons in the black skybox, and NOT popping them. Imagine not only popping them, but popping a lot of them while it's paused, them moving the camera away and back again, so you can see them in all their mid-burst glory.

You don't just make videos - you make art. This video was a nostalgic tingle in the most delicate part of my childhood. Thank you.

I hated spending so much time making an awesome coaster for them to say it’s too intense.

this is my favorite video, I remember getting roller coaster tycoon 2 in a cereal box and was so addicted to the sprites and the sounds. I could not even find a site online to buy the first one without getting the whole bundle.

You doesn't have to raise ground if you want to build higher. Just press shift. Took me like 20 years to figure it out.

One little tip I think could have been handy here is that when you are placing rides/stalls you can hold shift (or something) and move the mouse up to raise the ride on stilts rather than having to expensively raise the land to place the ride on top...

from what i remember, im sure on rollercoaster tycoon 2, you could go in POV mode and view from a guests eye view...as if you was walking around the park yourself.
