The $197,386 Pay Jump - Can He REALLY Make This Call?

Tyler Kenney and Daniel Weinman face off at the final table of a World Poker Tour event. They're down to the final three players, and the pay jumps are massive. However, this doesn't mean that they're nitting it up. In fact, they're clawing for every chip in the center, and Daniel Weinman finds himself contemplating an absurd call with six figures on the line. Should he make it?

I just want you guys to know that even though my focus is elsewhere right now, I still care about the community we built here and I care about the game of poker. Currently there is an oppurtuntiy to take advantage of a growing industry, and that means having to spend less time on poker. I will continue to put out content here at a much slower pace (going to be putting up a video a week), and I want to say thanks for the support over the last couple of years.

Idk man, your poker hands videos are the best on youtube by far, and even better than most videos that cost money, and in crypto, we have some people that really know their stuff. I know that you know that, and focusing on entartaiment, but it seems as a pretty crappy tradeoff to me. Ofc, this is not about me, and you know what are your own goals. I didn't really watched poker entertainment all that much, also, so maybe I am not all that relevant. I think you have pretty methodical approach to business though...you know your shit in that regards (this is not 100% compliment, because huge part of that is media/political skill and talent, which I am not a fan of...I don't really trust everything you say, to be precise). Sorry for spelling/grammatical errors, english is not my first language, and I rarely even write comments.

Hello Doug. You mentioned that hands like 74s, 64s etc would generally be call/call/folds but isn't have a 6 or 7 beneficially when choosing our call down hands as these bloc the nuts? I notice PIO often chooses call down hands that block the nuts over the same hand strength but better kicker when the kicker is irrelevant in terms of how it interacts with the board. Obviously usually these card removal spots work both ways, in that often cards the block the nuts also block some bluffs but in general what would you say is more important when choosing call down combos? Blocking the nuts or not blocking bluffs?

You gotta take ICM considerations into play late in tournaments. I was in a tournament where there were 5 players left and one guy had one big blind and two guys had exactly the same number of chips. We ran the numbers and the short stack was going to only get slightly more than 5th place money and decided to play on. On the very next hand, the two players with the exact same amount of chips went all in against each other guaranteeing the short stack to ladder up. It was so stupid and so unbelievable that I wouldn't have believed it if I wasn't sitting there. The short stack got an extra $250 dollars and one of the all in guys who lost cost himself over $600. Still can't believe it.

I really don’t get how the commentators say the 10 is irrelevant. I believe ace 10 suited makes complete sense for Tyler to have on the button open, call three bet bet the flop with two overs when Daniel checks a board that shouldn’t be good for his three betting range. Hit top pair top kicker on the turn and think you’re good. If this is way off someone let me know

Range math FTW. What a call. I wonder if a bet of about 5-6 million on the river might have been a better bluff. In that particular spot, the shove feels too much like pressure. Betting pot like that on the river represents basically the nuts only; it's hard to have the nuts.

Did I understand this correctly... Call call fold is better when you have hands with a greater chance to improve (ie 64) because it devalues opponent's river barrel? Thus, a hand with less chance to improve makes for a better call due to making your opponent's river barrel more valuable?
@Cowtymsmiesznego
@Cowtymsmiesznego 6 лет назад
I didn't really get that. Given that you call called already, and the river bricked, why would it matter that your hand could've or couldn't have improved? The only thing which comes to my mind would be the blockers, your hands which could've improved block more of your opponent's bluffs, that's why you can fold them. But that wasn't what Doug said there...
@carlgibson7850
@carlgibson7850 6 лет назад
Cowtymsmiesznego Appreciate the reply. Are you sure this isn't what he said? I just listen to his river explanation again and I'm pretty sure that's exactly what he is saying. Afterward, he goes on to say that I don't like using hands that can't improve as often as hands to call too and let go on the river. That's the part where I'm a little iffy. Is he recommending the 95 as a call because there's greater value in your opponents bluff...or does he not really care to call with either 95 or 64 and it just happens he prefers 95 in this instance due to reducing opponent's river bluff value. But neither are favored calls...I can't tell with the language used which he means. Or perhaps my limited poker understanding is in the way.
@Cowtymsmiesznego
@Cowtymsmiesznego 6 лет назад
I'm sure he didn't mention blockers during his river discussion. My idea was that if you have a hand like 64, you're blocking your opponent from having 6x (also a gutshot) which he might want to triple barrel with. What doug said (I think) was the following: for your call call folds you should rather pick hands which CAN improve on the river than the hands which cannot (implying that 95 is a better call call call). The reason being, hands that COULD'VE improved on the river are going to be calls more often anyway, because they are going to improve anyway. Let's try some numbers I guess. For simplicity, let's assume we can only have 95 and 64. 95 improves 0% of the time and 64 improves 20% of the time. Let's also assume your opponent always triple barrels. Strategy 1: call call call with 95, call call fold with 64 unless we improve (then obv call) If we have 95, we call 100% of the time, if we have 64, we end up calling 20% of the time. This means that regardless of which of those we have, we are calling at least sometimes. I guess that could be some protection against live reads (the opponent can't 100% bluff us even if he reads that we have 64). I know however, that Doug doesn't care about that. If we think of our entire range, we're simply calling the river shove 60% of the time. Strategy 2: call call fold with 95, call call call with 64. In this strategy, we always call with 64, even if we don't improve, so the result is we call 50% of the time. The question is, why is it better to call more often? I feel like that's what it comes down to, if we break Doug's reasoning down and disregard blockers (which Doug didn't mention). It seems to me that he essentially said something like "It's good to have a balanced strategy for every hand you have", which is kinda similar to typical Doug's "I like both options". But Idk why that would be the case.

Hey Doug, tx again for all the good poker video content, it has very much helped my game over the last year. The increase in my overall results has been quite astonishing. One suggestion: Because of your very rapidly growing Crypto channel, you may get some new subscribers to this channel whom don't even know the basics of NLH at all. Even though your poker game is very far beyond this, maybe you should consider a very basic video detailing how NLH is played. Like hand rankings, how the betting action goes with the flopped cards, turn, river etc. The reason it occurred to me to suggest this, my regular large crew got together to play a low stakes poker tourney over the holiday. One of our co workers whom had been around several of our poker sessions decided she wanted to try for the first time ever. I was trying to help and provide some suggestions, but it quickly became apparent she had zero concept of anything that was happening, so i asked her if she knew the hand rankings, and she said 'No'. Sadly only the eliminated players from our circle were providing suggestions, and while these people are friends, they are about as bad at poker as it gets .. so she got eliminated quickly lol.

Overpairs QQ+ are going to four-bet and 88-TT are likely to 4-bet as well, it depends on how both players have been playing throughout the rest of the hands. That's the trouble with a single hand breakdown, it misses a lot of the information the players have been getting from previous experience.

I feel like that was a really awful call on the river and I'm surprised Doug is saying he leans towards a call. He has cards he wants his opponent to have, he's at basically the absolute bottom of his range. Some of the other guys barrel range got there like A2. Plus he could just be smashed from a million different hands between straights sets and two pairs. So really you are just hoping the guy is going absolute nutso with some random ass shit like K9 that makes no sense when you make that call. Which he was, so it worked out this time but I feel like if we play this hand out a million times based on flop action with their entire ranges considered, the 59 is losing to river jams like 90+% of the time

Doug, I disagree with you when you say that a small additional amount is necessarily meaningless. There's a reason why stores have always charged us $9.99 for things instead of just charging $10... it's only a difference of 1c (which you usually end up paying anyway, as it will be rounded up) but psychologically it feels like you're paying $9 instead of $10. Some players WILL use psychological tactics similar to this; some will even make bet sizes that are just difficult to put together / call and get change for, as the additional effort will sometimes make more marginal holdings fold. Sure, psychology like this might not come into play as much at the higher levels... but at the lower levels, playing against players of lower caliber, it's definitely worth considering or, at the very least, not entirely meaningless.
@sneakkyz3696

Mate, look into the psychology of it - I'm not saying that that's what I THINK, I'm saying that that's what people's subconscious perspective of it is. If you look into marketing or psychology, that is EXACTLY why stores have always done that. I can't believe you were stupid enough to post a condescending comment without realising any of that.

This call is beyond my comprehension. Button has so many good hands, and hero calls the river with a 9, which blocks a lot of the bluffs... This can't be right. Can't hero have a lot of 2 pair hands to call with on the river? I mean, if he had 95o, I think he could have 84, 85, T4, T5, 53 that would be much better calls on the river, right? And if he must call with some one pair hands, don't do it with a 9 on your hand!!! Crazy hand, gj!

Daniels range is pretty capped at one bad pair or A high when he three bets and check calls flop So if he is the type of player that insists on having a calling range his options for calling hands OTR all suck. He cant only call with strong ish hands because its so rare that he gets here with them. Any river call is going to be a pretty bad hand in this situation.

always a day one fan. idk how you do it, with 2 channels, practically a video a day on crypto, do upswing poker, being a professional poker player, handling the crypto website, and investing in crypto too. thats alot of stuff in the oven. keep it up
