Why is it a gimmick that they are rappers who are passionate about politics and the candidate they support! You ever think they just actually are rapping about something they feel is making a difference?? It would be a gimmick if they didn’t actually believe what they were talking about!
Good catch. Me and my friends listened to his stuff with vanilla ice one night in a group call omg that music was so ass. Kinda forgot he existed B4 this comment
Tbh most of them just come off as corny, bigoted, and almost like a looney tune caricature. The thing with Amber Rose was a prime example. Most of their shtick is just to say the most offensive things you can and flail around like a “alpha male”. In fact most of them are in the same musical lane and class as Sexxy Red. Saying a whole lot of nothing and portraying an outrageous stereotype.
Mario Judah's gimmick overtaking his career is genuinely tragic, because "Endure" is such a phenomenal fucking rapper. I love this man's voice, his style, his rockstar energy, and his production, but he only has, like, ten songs in total because of how his gimmick's ballooned-that, and because of conflicts with managers he's spoken of.
mannn slim jesus was actually good im so mad that people cancelled him 😭😭 if that song was released 5 years later he would have been on top of the world rn
It's not a gimmick problem, it's more of a trying to get people talking about you, and to get short time Fame. We don't just have rappers anymore, we have what we like to call part-time wrestlers. Lol. They're not good, but serviceable.
Except for the part where he says gimmick rappers dont make it, yet the one thats considered the greatest rapper, is also the gimmick... So, dont trust what this clown says...
@@c64116 bruh how can you miss the point he kept empahsizing in this video. He literally said many time that being a gimmick rapper isn't a prob and can be done right ONLY if the music is good. Em is a crazy lyricist, Carti and Uzi have amazing vibe songs, XXX was just a super talented megastar etc. Geez, is one of the goofies in the video your fav rapper for you to be so offended? 😂😂
Gimmicks are not inherently bad. If the tunes are good, gimmicks can be a lot of fun. In metal, bands like Ghost, Sleep Token, and Sabaton pair gimmicks with killer songs in a way that enhances the experience of listening to their music.
I used to like him, then went to one of his concerts. It made me hate him 😂 like not only does he phone all his shit in and give more of a shit about hedonism than actually being a musician, like actual junkie behavior, he also just seems like a total cunt of a person. Acted like a total bar tard on stage and obsessed with his dumb check
I like FD Signifier's analysis on the authenticity of certain rappers' personalities as he argued it's kinda been a gimmick from jump, more specifically gangstas rapping. He's more elaborate than that but I love how this video kinda feeds into this point. Nothing wrong with gimmicks, but what happened to being yourself? 😭
Insane Clown Posse did their gimmick in a genius way in my opinion. Not only did they leverage the clown/carnival gimmick to stand out, but they would use it as a basis for their albums and various songs, making the entire thing very cohesive. Most of these failed gimmick rappers seem half hearted in their devotion, but ICP brought up the clown aesthetics regularly and mixed it with their trademark horror content well. Beyond that, they didnt let it overtake every single song they ever wrote. There were plenty of songs that didn't mention it at all, and were just devoted to really cool atmospheric horror stories. A lot of people hate them because they seem vapid and dumb but some of their songs are genuinely incredibly impressive and thought provoking, with songs like Mental Warp or Amy's in the Attic. They maintain the clown stuff perfectly to this day and while they seem a bit tired of it they also have personalities beyond it that make them engaging and fun.
The biggest change from 1996 to now 2024 is where the money comes from. Music was once intended for an adult audience because they had to pay for music n stuff, but now the money comes from ad revenue. Kids are always gonna be the biggest money makers for a view based revenue system because they spend the most time watching. So now bright colored gimmick rappers like these dudes shoot off like a firework for a couple months And then the little kids who got them their get bored fast and move on.
@@mattyballz lol it’s probably just me. Cause i follow you, louiasta and rishav fash1rand all three have a couple videos with him in it. Kinda getting burnt out of hearing his story. All yall drop great content regardless tho. I watch every video
Gimmicks go back to the dawn of hiphop, some of the most respected artists ever were "gimmick rappers" Slick Rick, Busta Rhymes, NWA, Snoop, EVERY member of Wu Tang, Beastie Boys, Geto Boys, Gravediggaz, Pharcyde, Missy Elliott, Fugees
Glad u mentioned Yung gravy. He's parody rap but it's actually really good imo. He's had some lyrics so funny that I literally lol'd. He's got great beats to back it up. He's seriously one of my favorite rappers. So many great tracks.
Sorry late comment. I look forward to your videos every Sunday and sometimes I don’t know the artist you’re speaking about but I’m still intrigued to hear your thoughts and analysis and sometimes I check them out after.I’ve heard of some of the These yeah .not gonna be checking them out not for me
We really live in different worlds. Some consume media through traditional means. Then, there are the internet kids. I am the former. I have no idea who any of these people are.
Even tho Rick Ross was a correctional officer and lied about running a kingpen, I could be wrong, but I still feel like he’s from the hood and lived through the struggle and actually seen traumatic things unlike most of these gimmick rappers who were born rich and silver spoon fed
Well, I have to say something good about Mario Judah's performance at Rolling Loud: it seems like he knows Candlemass and their biggest hit, Bewitched. He's literally dressed as Candlemass's singer in that song's videoclip
It'll be interesting to see how dave blunts career moves forward. It seems a lot of people are torn on whether to consider him as a gimmick artist or a genuine talent.
Excuse me, but Zev Love X aka MF Doom should not be labeled a gimmick rapper. RIP Zev Love and Subroc. KMD and 3rd Bass is just Ace in the Hole. All the rest of these queefs can get the gasface
Even though it's not on the same level, looking at lil nas x really fit in the mold. With the going against the christian ideology to a whole extreme level, when he did it again with his upcoming album, no one was impressed by it and he even had to apologize for it.
I never understood using rick ross' correctional officer career against his gangster personality. Corrections officers are some of the most corrupt people and often have or are affiliated to gangs. How do you think all the phones, drugs, etc get into prisons?
@kornjo27 if he got dope beats and hooks, he could have just become an artist instead of a meme. He had trash people around him that didn't give him good advice. A good financial advisor and PR specialist could have changed the trajectory of his life. He had that spark of talent and charisma.
@a.t.hustle1583 lord at 44 I stopped caring. I've witnessed the de evolution of music and feel sad when I see little bursts of talent crash and burn in a dismal scene after being blessed with so much good music for decades. Artists these days aren't willing to put in the work it takes to have a long career.
@@lisettes.9598 Amen Broski. Crazy, I was just listening to "the worst" Onyx & Wu-Tang right before I clicked on the new Mattyballz. So the last thing I heard was Sticky Fingaz.
12:00 nahh, a better compares is with xxxtentacion, he started with "idgaf" attitude but he evolved with his audience(btw thanks jivodraws for the idea)
I think Rick Ross is good because his music is good. He’s always been on the earliest end of a new trend. For example, Blowin Money Fast almost predates the drill scene, coming out in 2010, a year before the huge drill boom around 2011 with Akademiks Chiraq and Young Chop/Chief Keefs rise in 2011. The key is to never attach yourself to any one gimmick. By the time Chief Keef was at the top, Rick Ross was already moved on to a more old fashioned style with Devil is a Lie and the other song he did with Jay Z, Fckwithmeyouknowigotit. It’s almost like you have to start your career on your own, if your career starts with you riding a trend, you’re forever attached and locked into that trend. You go away with the trend. Rappers like Rick Ross came from an era when they weren’t following trends as much. There were “sounds” that lasted for a few years and evolved into new sounds. Now there are trends that last for a few months or a year or 2. When a rapper is establishing themselves they need to be bigger than the current trend to have a long sustainable career.
It can work sometimes, Tyler has had a different gimmick with each new album and that seems to be super successful. I mean he also makes great music so that helps.
I honestly thought Mabu's act was a great parody of suburban kids who want to be rappers, but like you said, he can't last an entire career being Ali G.
Like said, I feel like most rappers and singers since the 80s, 90s, and even 00s all had "gimmicks" that they played. The difference is, those were more characters and personas. They were more like styles the artist took on. These guys are just being outright stupid to try and capture a moment. If you look at most rapper from the 90s or 00s, everyone had such a unique style to them you could easily class it as a "gimmick", but it made them stand out, and they also had such a recognizable flow that you immediately knew who was rappers just when you heard their voice. You could say Busta had a gimmick, Nelly had a gimmick, Ludacris had a gimmick, Wu Tang Clan and so many more. But now these guys gimmicks are the equivalent of a WWE character. Might as well be Doink the Clown. Your only relevant for the moment. I dont think its as much that Hip Hop has a gimmick problem, since its always been there. Its that people have gotten progressively dumber, and everyones just trying to be stupid for clout now, rather than using it to actually add depth to their artistry.
