I needed to hear this so bad. Trying to keep up with all the new “hip” platforms is literally impossible and I’ve definitely been feeling more like a social media marketing expert than a musician for the past two years or so. I’m going to make “Do less better” my motto going forward. Keep up the good work man!
I think that's a good mind set bro. I think pushing out for the sake of quantity has its toll on the quality of one's content. Wouldn't you agree though that it is extremely useful to have the marketing knowledge too?
Kain - truuuuuue, and good point. It does have its benefits and I am glad I know the things I’ve learned because they’ve certainly helped me, even if they’ve helped me learn what NOT to do, lol. This video made me realize that it’s time to re-balance everything though, and it’s good to gain that perspective every once in a while if you start unknowingly drifting off course. Something I’ve done way too many times in the past.
@@STATXMUSIC To be honest learning what NOT to do and what TO do are pretty much the same thing; learning. It's a good way to anchor yourself to what you wanna do. Best of luck in future bro.
STATX I feel like regular recalibrations are necessary. There’s always pressure to keep up with the changing trends whereas I think the best place you can be is wherever your audience is and whatever platforms allow you to utilise your skill set. It’s not worth trying to do it all aye. ‘Do less better’ is an ideal mantra 👌
Spot on as usual! 💪what I can add for musicians is what helped me prioritize my different tasks: I do the creative music stuff like arranging, mixing, writing, editing earlier in the day as I still have more energy and I dont put any mental space on social media in that time at all. The posting is easier for me in the evening when Im already a bit more tired and I find being in front of the mobile screen easier, plus people check their feeds often after work. My two cents! Thanks for your videos. Always very straight forward and with a good vibe 🙏
RU-vid only for almost a year now and things couldn’t be better in the live show progress! I did a complete media fast of all screens for 30 days and WOW 🤩 what a difference in my playing. Your primary instrument is definitely plate #1! Good stuff Damo!! 🐒
370+ TIKTOK videos, 60+ IG posts, 40+ RU-vid Videos and other tweets, quoras, reddits, Facebooks, linked ins, Snapchats, even turned some motivational RU-vid videos into anchor podcasts. Looking back I was like a kid in a candy store. Getting away from what I went in for. I'm grateful for this video because it can bring us burnt out musicians together. Maybe we can collab and make a song called "I just want to be heard"
But if I already make a content e.g. for Instagram, isn't it easy to also place it on Facebook, RU-vid stories etc...? I think that the lack of (meaningful) content is usually the biggest problem.
1 watched this last year.... did I follow the advice? Nope💀. Is my social media still shit? Yes 🙂 ---- I’m gonna try to implement this time. I learnt the hard way, YOU CAN’T DO THEM ALL
So if I have 600+ followers on TIKTOK, 300 on IG and 70 on RU-vid and I want to start dedicating my attention. Oh boy sounds like I'm lost again. I guess that's the fear talking.
Oof when Damian was listing all those problems one after the other, me: Priority management problem YEP Expectation management problem YEP Creative energy management problem YEP
Yep, I feel you. You get caught up with the work and it’s easy to lose track of why you loved it to begin with. It’s about streamlining and then you’re able to enjoy more and bring your creativity into it
this is some fresh advice fsho. I might practice a hybrid of yours and Gary's strategies. I'll definitely focus harder on making something dope every few days, maybe every week, while still creating somewhat at scale. Fortunately, my day job gives me massive amounts of time to be on my phone tweeting and going crazy in the DM. Then in the afternoons and evenings is when I post to insta, and tik tok (if i push myself to do it). I do always think of the value a post provides, but I definitely do that "scattergun" shit. Hmmmm
I agree! It's overwhelming, the number platforms. I let my PRO distributor handle aggregation and I like RU-vid and Instagram, period. I keep a web site and FB page - obviously, but I've pretty much settled on IG and RU-vid to connect with my friends and fans. I can't even think about TikTok. lol - it's just too much.
I love this message! I tend to get overwhelmed by all the platforms out there for sure! I try to mainly focus on Instagram but I do have a FB page and a RU-vid channel (with my artist name) but I feel almost guilty for not keeping up with all the other ones consistently! And I have created a Tiktok profile but it was too daunting so I didn't even bother to make anything with it....
Ok... challenge accepted. I know very well what paralysis by analysis is. In the beginning I was like... ok, you’re describing me... So I’m gonna take the challenge and focus on one social media... at least I’m gonna try, and the 2 hours a day seems fair enough. Thanx for the video!!!
Wow I'm actually a bit ahead of the curve on this one! I'm on my 25th consecutive day of Instagram posting @GaryReidMusic. Do Less, Better! I even had the idea of switching to RU-vid vids after 30 posts, but maybe that's too soon? We'll see...
Would you adress the issue I describe below: "Almost every one has this problem AND up to 99% the reason is simply there IS TOO MUCH MUSIC out there. Almost more musicians then listeners :P Of course one can really also totally suck. But consider that a big portion of modern music sucks too but millions listen it. Which means it´s a marketing/connections thing. I have 10 / plays a week at Soundcloud and 20 or so at RU-vid LOL Underground Sounds vor 1 Minute Damian needs to adress the issue I described above - and not everyone wants to have a "brand" or such bullshit. Some only want some recognition of their music ...." Hey and posting every other hour some MOAR BS to the nets might not be the right solution I recon...
Damian, how you dealt with the "silence" when you started? I mean, sometimes I take more than 3 hours rehearsing or shooting or editing videos to social media and doesn't matter how many hashtags or conversation I put on it, connecting with people and etc, it always simply flops. 10 to 15 likes, 100 or so followers and that's it... Maybe I'm just boring, I'm willing to recognize that eventually, but there are so many boring people with so much reach on this social media... What they do that is so special to get heard?
TOM TheOthersMe have you got your branding down? Professional visuals, a story to tell, values and a message to portray? It’s the whole package that people become attracted too and once you find some true fans, it’ll start to grow. They need to know what they’re getting and what they can expect from you 😊 and it will probably be s l o w at the start!
Great music on IG- really like that Beatles cover of Yesterday! Great cover of RU-vid of Gale Song too. Subscribed. Keep plugging and you will grow. I grew my channel and IG by doing guitar contests and challenges and that was a great way to build a following for me.
I have the same question about Spotify, I seem to get around 5 plays in 1 month, which is actually cool. But at the same time not so cool for 7 years of producing.. open.spotify.com/track/0Ki4dkgLbAKKMp7rb0bZOM
@@lbks16 Almost every one has this problem AND up to 99% the reason is simply there IS TOO MUCH MUSIC out there. Almost more musicians then listeners :P Of course one can really also totally suck. Another great video. Paralysis by analysis is a problem due to school teaching "mistakes are bad" we learn from mistakes, it is best to make as many mistake as possible as early as possible for least money as possible. Once again, great video. PS, if anyone is looking for a content creator with 10 year creating for youtube, and 30 years in the entertainment industry, PM me. If I have not made a recent video for me, it is because I am making one for someone else.
I don't really try to be in every new social media platform that appears but can't really see a way around of being at least on Instagram, Facebook and RU-vid. RU-vid is the only good one for video content and, while Instagram is great, Facebook has the shareability factor.
It's very tough to keep on top of trends given the rapid rate of growth of all these platforms combined with the quickfire change of taste of the modern viewer... I don't know how the modern content creator can both create viable content in conjunction with ciphering the data trends and targeting their ever moving demographic... A team of 30 seems like not a luxury to do this optimally... "Spinning all these dishes" at once if you are a one man team, That would be miraculous, yet that is the harsh reality of most creators these days... Brave New World, indeed!
What if I don´t have just one thing that I do? I can´t find anything helpful on youtube, which helps me in that. I am a musician (songwriting and singer starting again from scratch) and I am a musical writer and composer (finished the work, but still at the start- have already an agent and director in Berlin) I wrote a book and got a lot of positive feedback in that...the reason I have a lot of projects is - I am a mother of 3 Kids and I was a musician before - then life comes between - so had to quit music for a while. In that time, I wrote a book and the musical - I am always very disciplined, so, therefore, a few more projects were born and I feel, that this was definitely correct - to use the time you have, for things which fits in your life. So how can I start now, if there are more things than one. Have you any tipps in that? Sorry for some english failures- greets from Austria
I certainly agree that concentrating on making your content as good as it can be is sound advice. However, you can make a video for RU-vid for example and the share it with Facebook say, or Instagram. That way you're not diluting your output but giving yourself more spread with the same content.
I recorded my first song with distorted bass today. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had playing a bass. I started going Lemme on that bitch, would of went Claypool but I was annoying the shit out of my audio engineer and he cut me off. But ur right about creative fatigue. I’ve been going 4 months strong and am fukn tired. If I go much longer on creative endeavors I’m going to have the bad burnout that could take a year to recover from.
Thanks for this man, I'm a new channel making funny videos but sometimes I get so tired from managing a couple platforms but this was great to hear. It showed me that I'm not doing bad at all. I'm just starting out just like anyone else.
This MASSIVELY helped. THANKYOU 🖤. I plan to join your academy at the beginning of 2021 so I'm looking forward to hearing even more AWESOME SHIT from you 🤘🤘
Hi Damian. I really enjoy to watch your videos and pick up some valuable information from them. Do you think that an artist can be too old or unsuitable for social media?
Thanks again Damian. I came back to this one and re-watched. I am very glad I did since lately I have been getting overwhelmed with all the platform options. Gonna take a breath and make and make a plan. Cheers!
Damo, there are so many valuable tips here, why don’t you time stamp everything or at least show a summary at the end so we can screenshot it and keep it?! Thanks.
one thing I have noticed is that you can link your social platforms so that you can post on muti platforms at once. it does help in posting to as much of your audience as possible in one post. your face book you can link to twiter you can link other sights as well. this is something that I am learning to do myself.
Thank god for that. I just took myself off Facebook a while back and was worried that I would missing out a trick. RU-vid seems more plausible for me and as for Instagram I still can't get my head round it 😂😂 I think it gets harder the older you get haha
Hey Damian! Thank you for your tips! In the last months I'm trying to build my Facebook page throught live and music posts. I like this approach aiming for 1 thing at a time. Would you consider making a video for building a fanbase in facebook in 2020 during quarantine? Thank you!!!
His thumbnail, title, and topic choices are really effective, because despite everytime I watch his video I got bored real quick and drop the video... I keep clicking to his video again and again, lol...
Trying not to be negative. But, this just stressed me out. I’m glad I am content with just writing songs because it makes me happy and I earn my living doing something else. Glad it works for you though. Everyone is different and that is a good thing. Keep up what makes you happy!
It's definitely true that content creation has somehow leapfrogged actual artistic creation for a lot of musicians and that's just kind of a struggle that modern day artists are having to deal with. I really like this approach of simplifying and focusing on one particular social media platform instead of trying to tackle all of them at once. I think what can help with this is figuring out how each platform can work with each other. I use my Instagram a lot to promote my RU-vid videos and use Twitter as more of an interactive platform. It gets difficult though, because particularly with RU-vid, the process of making a video can be very time consuming and can take away from time spent doing other things. At the end of the day though it's really about time management and just being as efficient as you can be
Wow! This is so helpful and insightful! Thanks for your advice. This is exactly the way I’ve been feeling with social media lately...overwhelmed with so many platforms and having to post constantly verses actually creating and writing music.
Really helpful again, friend! I’m dealing with EXACTLY THIS issue right now as I’m trying turn playing weddings (and whatever else pays 😆) into a true “branded” business where I’m building something that can last with people I really care for and who really care for what I’m creating.. I’m gonna take the 30 day challenge haa!
Gary Vee had me on one. It's so important to know how the people on level 99 made it thru level 1. Thank you for some much needed realism. When I started I wrote that I would make it on RU-vid. Then I came out here and did everything 🤦. I'm grateful for my actions and the lessons I did and didn't learn yet, lol.
Gary V is a legend. He has that many people on his creative team because that's the business he's in. Practices what he preaches. His $100k keynote speeches are full of wisdom and insight. He speaks from a place of experience and provides the world with free/valuable content that i urge every single person to go watch. He'll change your life. I know the comments in this video weren't meant to put him down... that being said.. he deserves all the respect. Go see for yourselves
I've been properly going at RU-vid almost every day since the start of December and recently came to the conclusion of said 'Time Boxing' for efficiency. It's very easy to underestimate the amount of time just setting up your equipment can take! Another great vid, cheers 👌
Funny story. Last night, as I strummed my guitar... I had a realisation. I thought back to when I first started to learn the guitar, when I first started writing songs. I didnt have the internet or social media, and I was at my happiest....it was just me and the music. Last night I deactivated all my accounts (I know it may seem crazy), and decided to focus on recording for the next few months. The second I did that, alone in my flat in Prague surrounded by my guitars, i immediately felt a massive sigh of relief. I wake up today to this video, so thank you Damien....I dont believe in God, but hey....perhaps this is him working some sweet magic? I've decided to keep my RU-vid and soundcloud, and JUST focus on the music from now on. I hope everyone is taking advantage of the Corona madness and being creative AF! ❤
I personally feel like the part with being creative is actually the hardest part of being a musician... Might just be me, though. I already only use Twitter and Instagram, although I rarely post anything there. I just don't see any real point in posting online and trying to build a fanbase, when I can't even seem to create any music worth marketing to that fanbase, but maybe that's just me... When the year started, I set a goal to write, record and release 12 songs in 2020 (that's an average of 1 song per month). Given that I still have 0 songs written (actually, make that 0 mediocre-or-better riffs), I'm starting to think that my best bet of releasing music this year would be to just record covers of songs I like, even knowing that the music I like is far from popular in my country... Thoughts?
This is great, definitely an approach I plan on taking. I've been watching your videos for a while now and honestly for the longest thought you were out of your mind saying make the music available for free. I now, after a lot of thinking on the idea, see it as a great route to take. Thanks for all you do. I can't even begin to rattle off all the ideas I've taken from your videos that I am now putting into practice. Dont know what your analytics look like so far as different musical genres go, but I am a Gospel artist, which you probably don't have a lot of. Just saying that to point out how your advice works great regardless of the style or brand. Again, thanks, and God bless my friend! If you want to check my music out, my channel is: DAVID HARAWAY MUSIC.
RU-vid vs Instagram vs Twitter vs Spotify? I'm trying to get started and chose a platform but need help on which would be best for me to start off with. I'm looking to present my music (meant to be for film, tv, Animation, games, etc, but also songs). I know some animation and many of them I would like to build animations off them (this would be more on the long the goals)
This is one of the best videos I have seen on the subjects on pillar platforms, especially the stress of constantly feeling like you are missing out if you aren't posting everywhere everywhere all the time.
Thank you for this common sense video and Chasing everything on social media will completely consume you. Thank you for putting a spotlight on this. Less is more really rings true here.
I totally agree with this, I've been trying to limit my focus on two or three platforms a week and keep my "content" fairly consistent. I've been mostly focusing on Facebook and RU-vid, I upload a cover song every Wednesday on yt and share the link on fb for that days posts, I do a bit of a long form motivation post on fb on a Monday, Tuesday I'm trying to share older videos from yt to fb (usually an artists birthday and I mention "hey I did a casual cover of their song x" I've taken to doing tbt, I try to get audience interaction with a fan Friday post and Saturday I shamelessly self promote my yt and Spotify with links to my teespring. It was doing OK for a while but in the last few weeks my reach has tanked to fuck all and I'm wondering if its external links or my posts getting samey
Wow, Damian! I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel! Thank you for the last 4 videos I have watched. :) Would you mind telling us how you feel about using one platform's option (such as IG) to also post on Facebook and Twitter at the same time as your original post?
This video is BRILLIANT. TIMELY. Exactly what I needed, So thorough, answered all my questions. The plate spinning analogy landed. The prep SHOWS! I am going to work on implanting all these ideas into my work 😌 analysis paralysis has been my kryptonite, and I really feel like this is the green light I needed after being forever stuck at yellow. Thank you Damian and team! ❤️😆 Your guidance and perspective is honestly made for 2020 and I hope you’re getting back as much as you give!
Do you have some recommendations for creating meaningful content that's also cost effective? Instagram seems like it would work best for me at the moment (Facebook's a close second), but doing multiple photoshoots, short videos or other visuals just seems like it would add up very quickly
Have you thought about 2 or 3 photos on a post that tell a bit of the story of your upcoming track? Or a video telling how you came up with the idea 1 or 2 days after the release date? I feel like "behind the scenes" content is interesting, both for the average listener and for producers/singers/songwriters. Hope this helps man ✌
@@jeancarmona5157 Those are great ideas. I do plan on taking some photos soon for a new single, and having been thinking about doing a kind of "songwriting diary." I'm just not sure if I can come up with enough good content to fill 30 days. It just always feels like I'm not doing enough
@@afrosensei5308 I feel you. What I sometimes do is take a look at social media of other producers: get inspired, see what theyre posting, how often, all that stuff. It can give you a raw guide. Regarding the 30 days.. do you plan to post daily, in IG?
@@jeancarmona5157 Well I was going to try to give what Damien was talking about a shot, as far as posting meaningful content everyday for 30 days. I'm just not sure how to go about doing that. I'm not in a band so everything comes out of my pocket, and the best time for me to create any content (photoshoots, videos, etc.) is on the weekend.
@@afrosensei5308 yeah my bad for not remembering the 30 day challenge (I listened to the vid earlier but I decided to relisten to it).. And I suggest to type in google "33 percent formula Adam Ivy", a short fb vid will appear. Its basically that you should consider posting 33% of music related content, 33% of your personal life, 33% of what you like (hobbies etc) and the other 1% is having fun.. That can help you out. I encourage you to watch the short vid. Plus, this guy can help you a lot too.
For someone who is just starting out in creating content and sharing it with other people, your pieces of advice and words of wisdom always remind me of what and what not to do. You keep us on the right track, sir Damian. Thank you!
Lowkey, this actually changed the way I promoted my buisness on Social media. Now I'm not in the music industry, but it worked for me as well. Thank you for all the videos You put up, and I hope to see many more in the future.
Thanks for this awesome video. This made things a lot clearer to me on what I should be focusing on. And your example of how you create these videos gave me on idea of how I should be making music.
