I agree with John Benevoli's comment below. No coach will tell you to get down and stay there! You need to get down so you can acivate your kinetic chain or in simple terms so you can use the momentum of the rest of your body not only your arm. Too many recreational and club players, and sometimes even lower level performance players ( typically those who are taller ) are playing too upright relying more than they should on their arm.

I've never heard of anyone STAYING down. I think you may have this myth confused. Most recreational players are much too vertical with little space between their feet, so thats why they are told that,.. specifically to address THAT problem. Most pro players put much more space between their feet than in your example and explode up especially on lower bouncing balls around the baseline. Players need to stay low moving horizontally along the baseline How many times have we seen Swiatek almost down on her knees to return a deep ball driven towards her? Pushed sideways into the corners you need to have a lower centre of gravity too. I suspect that is why this generalization is made, but its specific to the situation you're in. Its a bit ironic showing two of the greatest players of all time to someone who does not understand how the weight of shot is created from the ground up if they can't get their glutes & quads involved, which they won't engage standing to upright..

fully agree. basically the coach in the video is showing one problem(hitting low ball) and then give you a solution to another problem (hitting normal height ball). i like to see if he would teach something really useful :)

In our experience coaches are constantly telling players to stay down on their groundstrokes with terrible results

One can go upright or "stay down" while hitting the attacking ball. Depends on what stroke you will make: low&flat - stay down during all process, high or midhigh drive - go upright if you want. "Staying down" doesn't mean your body do not rotate. So, cinetic chain works.

at the beginning the coach was showing hitting a knee high ball by staying low. then he talks about hitting normal hight ball. so would you tell us, if the ball is as low as knees, what's the best way to hit it with full kinetic chain?

prepare your raquet take back at the height of the incoming ball and adjust your feet accoringly. Ultimately, and this applies to most shots, you want to peel your back anchor foot from the ground as you hit up into the ball. The only time you stay down through the entire stroke is on a short ball that is fading on you. Take for example Medvedev, on low backhands..he will get down and stay down throughout the stroke whereas most amatuers will rise up mid stroke due to weak quads & abs because they can't tolerate the discomfort of holding the pose..

@@johnbenevoli2066 do you have any video link to show Medvedev hitting low balls? i cannot picture "peel your back anchor foot from the ground as you hit up into the ball", can you explain. my thought on hitting low ball is that: first you needs to bend you knees and get down but there is a limit of that, plus when you bend your both knees, that limits your hip turn and that's what this coach called "broken kinetic chain". 2nd is to tilt your spine and shoulder, when you tilt your spine and shoulder, your body and stay high and your racket can get low, that way, you will have enough racket speed and hit a powerful ball from low position.

there are some situations on the court where players will stay down. However, this is relatively rare, and is simply caused by the situation. In that case, and the player opts for reduced racket, head speed, simply because the situation does not allow to fully uncoil.

this is the same as the saying " Sit and lift." There is no myth out there. No one one stays down the whole shot

actually the benefit of the kinetic chain ISN'T to generate 'maximum' velocity/ acceleration at the end of the chain (strings hitting the ball) - the benefit is to make that velocity/ acceleration EASIER to achieve. There's way too much emphasis on everyone trying to hit the ball as hard as possible on each shot (including the serve). Instead - great technique produces leads to not just 'easy power' - but 'effortless' play - at least as to the stroke aspect of play. The 'effort' can then be channeled into movement around the court - both offensively, defensively and reactively - which all often meld together obviously. Of course, one also wants to be able to move and react 'effortlessly' with the goal being to both move and hit and generate power with as little effort as possible so you can rinse and repeat without having to feel 'spent' after each point. I'll also point out that you are putting the cart before the horse re: the unit turn. It's the coil that's important - the unit turn follows the coil and obviously you can coil and release energy w/out achieving a full 'unit turn'. Regardless - the point I'm making is that just turning your shoulders and hits doesn't help you store and release energy; its that core coil that starts the process not the other way around.
