I watched this lesson a couple of weeks ago. I then went away and had a bash at Misty Blue by Dorothy Moore (great tune, you should do a short on it), using your technique, and you're 100% correct Dan. It's so much easier to remember when you learn by ear than by Tabs. It's like it's instantly burned into your memory the second you suss out what the note is. Just watched this again for a refresh. Fantastic lesson, as usual. Love peace and harmony to you Dan ❤

This helps a bit. Im right here in my playing.. im learning to hear key notes to pick up on the songs i want to play and learn.. some of them are quite difficult while others are a bit smoother and ease the pain of learning. Thanks for the video.

I have never been a singer and do not whistle . Many people have done that their entire lives without thinking . I believe if you hear a " line " , be it a riff , bass , vocal or melody and can sing it , hum it , whatever , it's a huge help . Also play scales , notes , roots , fifth's , octaves , etc. all over the neck and sing , hum the notes . Make the connection so you can match those notes . The goal is to play it without guessing " is this right " ?

@@dexdouglassbassbum How about trying out for a group , no advance list of songs and being told what you are playing " sucks " . Or " come down and jam " in a bar . Again , no idea of what they are playing , NOT 3 chords , and someone yells " this guy doesn't know what he's doing " . NEVER heard the song before ! No fun . Even you can get a few chords , with a garage band education , you are going to get killed .

As an absolute beginner in playing bass, I find your way of teaching easy to follow. Even though what you’re sharing is not necessarily easy (😅). Been playing digital from… since I can remember and have reached a point where I was (literally) craving a real instrument. After researching for a while, I came across guitar bass tutorials on YT. It took maybe two days to convince myself. Went to guitar center and bought one. I’m so excited for this new music journey. That said, thank you!

Thanks Dan and I was happy to hear that you agree which was bound to be the case. And yes, there have horse been brilliant ones but some of them have really struggle such as Suzie Quattro once she was not on your bass player. But fronting a rock band and I only recently realised how good she is. But then again, I'm such a poor musician. It's hard for me to know. 1967 I played in the three piece band and are trimmer was a lovely and stunning female who also numbers and that was really unusually in 1967. I saw a band called the Applejacks in 1964 and the bass player was the lovely Megan Davis euth and a stunning sunburst Gibson EB2. Of course everybody knows about Tina and Tal But there are many that are overlooked

Nice lesson Dan. Great tips here. One thing I always try and do when learning a song is to work out and play the bass line exactly as per the recording, and to be pedantic about it. This has allowed me to build up my toolkit of great bass lines over the years, which I can then use to make up bass lines to original songs, subconsciously. It doesn’t mean you necessarily have to play the cover note for note, but you should be able to, if required. The other thing I do is use an app that allows you to loop the song between sections, slow it down and change pitch if required. I usually try and work out the chord progression, using root notes only, followed by the groove, and then fill in any riffs/hooks. I really like your videos. Well done. That P bass has a killer sound.

Thanks. Yes that’s exactly it for me too for gigs - learn it exactly. I get so much from doing that. But then I can always add my own thing in.

I gotta plug my favorite music oriented piece of software here and that's transcribe! By 7th string software. I practically live in that app and have probably spent hundreds of hours learning basslines with it. Given the features, there's nothing i can't figure out given enough time and perseverance.

Dan -- ever tried tapewound strings? Very smooth but very punchy. Like flatwounds but, to my ears, better. Turns out Paul McCartney was onto something when he used them on his Hofner.

Yes I have - I like them for certain situations and they’re great for that old school sound. Herbie Flowers used them on a lot of classic records.

Its hard to find a ear train lesson. If you could have a drum track, play 5 notes in a key, then a few nites in another key, then the listener can figure out how to play along, tell what keys theyre in, faster later. 👍
