Is Talent Necessary to Create Good Drawings? In this video, I discuss the topic of talent and hard work. I've been told for so many years how talented I am and what I gift I have to be able to create art. But is this really the case? Hope you enjoy :)

When I was in high school I had an art class. It didn’t go very well. I got low marks and was told by the teacher that I had no ‘talent’! That was it fo me. I didn’t attempt to draw for the rest of my life! I’m 70 now and have been drawing since last Summer. I get discouraged a lot. It’s just for fun. You’re one of the youtubers that keeps me going. Thanks.;-)

That's really awesome to hear - not the beginning of the story of course but the end! It's never too late to have fun for sure. I get discouraged myself as well so no worries. Just remember to have fun and enjoy it :) Take care. Glad I've been able to keep you going.

Me too! Male art teacher said one too many unkind things in high school. Started again by completing Inktober 2017 and now I'm in a group on FB, put my work on IG and have just turned 50. My goal is to improve and enjoy doing so. Am in awe of your work on here, I have some catching up to do ;-)

I have known you your entire life and I can attest you have always been talented in art. That being said I also agree that people can learn to draw and paint because there are certain criteria that can be taught. You however are educated in art as well as you are a natural artist. I know your style is currently painting 'loose' which many artists desire to master. I also know you can paint and draw with great precision which is almost photogenic to your subject. You are a learned yet gifted artist.. So thankful you share your knowledge with everyone!

There's something really genuine about the way you teach and encourage your viewers. It's just like a favourite teacher that keeps rooting for his students. Your work is amazing and I like how you emphasize hardwork and dedication. At the end of the day, I feel like the end result of one's work is what's most important. Doesn't really matter whether it's as a result of pure talent or hardwork/dedication or even a mix of both. Love your videos! ☺

Great topic!! Whenever someone says something like that to me and follows it with “I could never do anything like that”, I always reply the same way. “That’s not true. Anyone can learn to paint/draw. It’s a skill like anything else, not a gift. You just need to change how you SEE the world and practice. Anyone can learn.” They always look at me like I’m crazy. But I believe it.

Haha yes no doubt, well said! It's all a change in perspective, some folks can't see it. But that's alright.

The concept of art, is expressed with no boundaries. Everything in the universe is gifted with art. Whether you see it or not. Art is the reflection of oneself, but without no mirror.

You are spot on imo. I had a friend who was a good musician and he got the poops with people who said you’re lucky to be so talented. It was 8 to 10 hours practice a day nearly every day for years. Practice practice practice and have fun with it .... who gives a crap if you’re not “good” at something, at least you’re doing it!

My mother is a FANTASTIC artist. She can also create some really iffy paintings. Its all about honing skills and channeling patience. I generally dont like painting. I love pencil drawings and the like. It helps to like what you do. Thomas Kincade is a great painter. Yet, the painting on the Sistine Chapel is downright genius.

Great video; great message. I really needed this message after struggling with a portrait of my daughter today. I finally gave up on it after starting over several times. Close but portraits either have it or not. That’s a good thing. I need a little more experience and I’ll try that one again. In the mean time I’ve printed out an 8x10 photo of some old man and looking forward to blocking it out tomorrow.

Sounds good and I know exactly what you mean about portraits, hit or miss usually. They are tough. Keep at it and stick with them. You will improve. I do have a book suggestion for you if you don't mind. It speaks mostly on portraits and it's one of my favorites. It's called Lessons in Masterful Portrait Drawing: A Classical Approach to Drawing the Head. I made a video about it here, if you want to hear a review on it and learn more about it. Just thought it might be useful for you :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G9N6Ehdvyks.html

I would love to hear your views on how art is really very subjective. I think that point is an extension to this same topic you discussed here. Getting good at art or really anything is not always or cannot always be measured in a form that is same for everyone. Some areas do have a bar you have to reach to be considered good, but I don't think art really is that. Just like you described your art, for most people they say you are just talented but for you personally you haven't reach a point where you can say you are the greatest. Then there is the matter of how one perceives art to be which defines their definition of good. For example, some artists do can produce great art but they cannot do real life art as good as their other work, their artwork is really appealing but very abstract, imaginative, and expressive. I think drawing doesn't require one to choose a path to follow but a way for them to express themselves, put the image they have in mind on paper which can be a form close to real life or not. Love to hear your thoughts about this topic. Thank you. P.S. : New subscriber, really love your videos. I used to draw and paint as a kid, gave a few drawing grade examinations but some reason I stopped drawing and painting in my late teens. Now almost after 8-10 years in my late 20s I am getting back to drawing was looking for some inspiration and found your channel. Thank you for making such nice videos to express your thoughts on art. Keep'em coming:)

Really interesting points you brought up. I'm going to have to think about those for a while and see how I feel haha. I don't usually think about it too deeply all that much but this has sparked some ideas I think. Many different ways to go from here. I appreciate your time and thoughts :)

Drawing is pure talent, anyone can "draw" to an extent, but drawing to an impressive extent is pure natural talent. I'm sick to bloody death of people on here saying it can be learnt, show you, make it look simple etc, you try and it looks awful, it drives me mad. It is talent not skill, for crying out loud just admit it
@bennyvermeulen7255
@bennyvermeulen7255 2 года назад
I believe you, I'm also saying drawing is talent, only talented people can learn the skills to improve and to make it worth some. It's the same with a physicist, they are not born with a chalk in their hands, but when going to school they level up more easily with math etc. then other students. Someone that gets barley math, will never become a physicist, no matter how many hours they are studying it. And you have gradations in talent, some have a lot, some just the minimum acquirement to still improve level up and understand it. Anyone else that has not the minimum needed level of math intelligence or drawing intelligence (there are different type of intelligence) will not get it. No you can't learn it if you don't have the minimum talent to grow in that field. Just like some people are good in mechanics, sports, music etc. They go in that field because they have a talent for it.

Szerintem kell a rajzhoz tehetség. Fejlődsz a gyakorlással, de egy idő után már nem. A tehetség kezéből csoda születik, a szorgalmas tanuló kezéből egy szép rajz.
