After watching this, statistics doesn’t look like a good major at all. Statistician- Need higher education Financial analyst- Better suited for finance people Market researcher- Need background in finance Economist- Need advance degree plus not feasible with just a stat degree Database Administrator- More suitable for someone in CS. Now what are we left with? Data science, business analyst and software engineering. If someone wants to do data science and software engineering then why not just choose computer science that way you will have far more career prospects. So only good options after a stat degree is a business analyst? After watching few of your videos I can't seem to understand how you are so optimistic about this major while explaining the doomsday scenario.
These are not the only 10 jobs you can get, they were actually just 10 listed out on some career website so I ranked them. Data analyst, business analyst, ACTUARY, all great careers that a stats major can get with just an undergrad ..
i've seen online that you can't really become a software developer with a statistics degree. Do you agree with this statement? What can you do to increase your chances of landing the software job?
Great video! Data science is something I'm pursuing. I was wondering if you could do a video on statistics classes a major or minor would take. So Zach Star has a video where he did this with Math called "A look at some higher level math classes | Getting a math minor" I was wondering if could do a video inspired by that that leads you through the broad subject areas in statistics and maybe how they relate to real life applications and jobs.
That’s definitely something I can add to my list, currently there is one on my channel where I go over every class I’ve taken in my stats degree though!
If you are going to study Data Science DS, then there is a good chance you are going to get scammed. Most institutions will teach you DS as algorithms only, aka AI and ML. But that will not make you a real data scientist. To be a real data scientist, in addition to AI and ML, you need to have a very strong background in statistics and the work domain. I even recommend studying bachelor of Statistics before studying DS. You can skip statistics if you are going to skip the data analysis role of DS, and going to work on black box models only, ex. deep learning.
Thanks for your input! Great video as always. I was just wondering about your opinion on the data science major? I know it's a relatively new degree, and some people tell me to choose a cs, statistics, or applied math major over a data science major, but the major itself sounds appealing to me because it offers a broad spectrum of courses including computer science and math.
@@basedabdu8653 yes more so focused on data visualization, SQL, etc. whereas a data scientist might have more machine learning responsibilities as well as data engineering responsibilities
I work with people who majored in biostatistics, I don’t think there are many jobs as a “Biostatistician” though.. most will become data scientists or data analysts but that is not fact just my opinion
These jobs are great and all but… Is A Statistics Degree Worth It? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b-TeTyU29eA.html PS Consider Subscribing 😎
Invest banking isn’t the first thing I’d be thinking of when I was a statistics major but I’m sure it would be possible with right financial background
i'm a foreign statistic student in united kingdom and i wonder if i can benefit from employment opportunities in united state after graduation , thank you.
I m doing bsc.applied stats and data analytics (2nd yr) I want to start my own research and build a startup . Please suggest me some methods/way, ideas
Plus statisticians related careers are one of the highest growing and highest demand jobs as reported by the US Bureau of labor statistics .. doesn’t help that the US economy isn’t looking great.. just because your son doesn’t currently have a job doesn’t mean it’s a bad major! 👍🏻
@ChristianGardner good for you. He's one of the Pandemic kids since 4rth yr hs. Any recommendations? Maybe he could get a referral ? Or someone who knows who? Backers ....thank you
@@geraldinekim9679 I applied to over 100 internships before I got my offer which turned into my full time job .. get creative and don’t only apply to data analyst or data science jobs .. apply to things that your son has experience in and typically id recommend applying directly on company websites rather than job boards or linked in
Yes that’s definitely a possibility, statistical concepts would be very important in conducting studies as a lot of people in those fields may not have a statistics background … look up concepts in experiment design!
@@ChristianGardner Disagree a lot on your statement I've done a double bachelor in neuroscience and psychology in amsterdam. Racked up 63 ETC in stats (1+ year in credits, if the program takes 3 years). Did do a stats specialisation for 30ETC but still 33 ETC in stats from psychology is a lot more than the usual 6 or 12 in a normal program. Stats is important for being able to do research, any research focused bachelor like psychology must have a lot of stats knowledge and a good program reflects that
You would have to do bachelors and masters in psychology. Statistics is a major part of psychology and one of the most important subjects in psychology. Especially in PhD psychology, research, statistics and data analysis is what is done all 5 years
