In this video, we are going to cover the 10 commandments of triceps training. The shalt and shalt nots of how to make sure every one of your tricep workouts is productive and helping you to pack on those gains to the back side of your arms.

This is the complete list of tricep training tips found in this video:
1. Thou shalt do a dedicated triceps workout each week
2. Thou shalt be mindful of your back training
3. Thou shalt not forget pushups
4. Thou shalt perform full extension (yeah, full like ALL the way full)
5. Thou shalt not fear thy kickbacks
6. Thou shalt bend thy wrist
7. Thou shalt fix your posture for bigger triceps (yes posture)
8. Thou shalt train all parts of the strength curve
9. Thou shalt always remember to train your triceps heavy
10. Thou shalt not forget to train triceps light
Taking from the triceps master tip on our channel, you must remember to straighten your elbows all the way on your tricep exercises. Far too often, the elbows will be left a little flexed and the medial and long head of the triceps don’t get adequate activation by never reaching a full contraction.
It is important that you add a dedicated triceps workout to your training week. Often times, people who follow push pull legs and total body splits relegate their specialized triceps work to a couple exercises at the end of the workout. Not only is their inadequate volume but they aren’t attacking these tricep exercises with enough energy given that they are already fatigued from the other exercises they did earlier in the workout.
It follows up that you also will need to be aware of when you are planning your triceps workout in your overall weekly workout schedule. This is because there is a carry over between some of the back exercises that you might do that will also tax your triceps and not allow them adequate time to recover. If you do pullovers or straight arm pushdowns in your back workouts then you will need to consider when you place your triceps workout in your routine.
Pushups are incredibly versatile for building bigger triceps because of what they do for increasing volume without needing extensive equipment or space. In fact, they can be the perfect drop set option for any compound exercise that precedes it. You just have to remember to tweak the pushup in a way that places more of the stress on the triceps rather than the chest or shoulders.
Don’t forget to do kickbacks if you want to build big horseshoe triceps. The movement is one of the very few that helps to place the triceps in its most contracted and shortened state with the elbow back behind the body and the elbow full straightened. Active insufficiency will cause you to sacrifice the weight you can use on the movement but the peak tension generated is worth the inclusion.
You must always remember to train your triceps heavy if you want to see maximum growth. Heavy exercises like the close grip bench press, lying ez bar extension and even weighted dips are all candidates to help pack on some size on your triceps while fitting the bill of the heavy movement required to get the job done.
That said, you must also remember to use light triceps exercises if you want to build bigger arms. The reason for this is that using light weights for high reps in your tricep workouts is going to spark a different set of growth stimulus - metabolic stress. When you perform high reps you accumulate metabolic buildup that can serve to stress the muscle cell and cause adaptation that forces new muscle growth and bigger triceps.

Hi Jeff love the videos, been a big help to me as I have not long started back training, so I have a quick question, I like to do a 5 to 10 min run on the mill to warm up before my workout and 5 mins after to cool down, but I have been told that this will hurt any potential gains I have made during my workout. Is this true, am 5'8" and wheigh 64kg so am prity lean (hoping to get bigger as you have done with Jesse😉) thanks for any advice. Ross from Scotland 👍

Definitely agree, it’d be great to get a video explaining what workouts to put in each. I got excited when he showed an example push workout at 1:02, I can now use that as a rough template for my push workouts, but still no pull or legs yet.

jeff... my off topic question is ''what is your opinion on BMI measurements''. i find that the more muscle you get the heavier you become and hence on the BMI scale you are regarded as overweight or obese.

Hey man, you're correct, BMI is a useless and outdated measurement as it simply doesn't take into account any aspects of body composition other than height and weight. Don't concern yourself with it and instead focus on bodyfat percentage, muscle mass, etc. Hope that helps!

Please do a video on the Separated AC Joint shoulder injury. I have a total lack in confidence in my shoulder since my injury. I'm worried that the disfigurement can get worse. Also it would be great to know what can be done to prevent more disfigurement, arthritis, popping/grinding and complications stemming from an unaligned shoulder. Example: I'm feeling the muscles in my back around the shoulder or shoulder blade area tightening up and almost spasming and I have to massage these knotted muscles multiple times a day to get relief. I feel like it's starting to affect my posture. Thanks!

I suggest adding only lighter weight like a small puppy or a komodo dragon hanging on your head that will increase the weight and you gain more muscles

Examples of post-workout foods: 👍 Chocolate milk. Grilled chicken with roasted veggies. Tuna salad sandwich on wholegrain bread. Spinach and egg whites omelette. Hummus and pita bread. Yoghurt and berries. Salmon with brown rice and sweet potato. Oatmeal, whey protein, banana and almonds

Hey man, the best way to combat an imbalance In size like that is to simply increase volume slightly on the smaller side, so only do unilateral exercises and always do additional sets or reps on that smaller side to allow it to catch up. Hope that helps!

Because you have better mind-muscle connection to your right pec. Focus on single pec exercises to build a better mind-muscle connection with your left pec. I had the same problem and that fixed it pretty much

It's much easier to first balance it out, and then train them both equally instead of "training that muscle by 28.7838% more than the rest to compensate for imbalances".

Make sure you aren’t shrugging on your left side. Keep those shoulders pulled down towards your feet (the reverse of a shrug basically) during chest exercises.

Hey man, no there is no issue with doing that at all, exercise on a pretty much empty stomach doesn't have any particular benefits, but it doesn't have any downsides either so you can feel free to carry on. Hope that helps!

Jeff, what is optimal rotation in general between light weight high rep and heavy weight low rep? As example - I do upper body each second day and always heavy weight low rep. So for better result I should do light weight high rep each second time or 2 to 3 ratio or same day or something else..? Speaking just about growth and aesthetics, not strength or endurance. Thank you.

Hey man, rather than constantly rotating between the two, it is best to do phases/blocks of just one or the other to get the most from that particular adaptation and then introduce the new stimulus for even more adaptation. So for example, stick to purely higher rep/lighter weight work for 4-6 weeks, then move to a heavier block where you're staying around 5-8 reps, and so on. Hope that helps!

After regularly training 3 times a week and a 700 caloric surplus, ive gained muscle and fat. However in the lat 2 months, Ive been working out every other week because I thought it would maintain my muscle. I want to reduce my body fat while also maintaining my muscle. How can I do that?

Hey man, the best way to do that is to enter a slight calorie deficit rather than a large one, no more than 300-500 calories below maintenance, on top of that you should ensure that you're eating high protein within those calories, higher than normal, and also train for strength and hypertrophy with a high frequency. Hey Jeff. Is there any point in doing a flat bench and incline bench in the same workout? And please do a video for chest like you did for biceps, shoulders, the five minute workout type.

Hey man, doing both in one workout definitely isn't pointless as you will still be working the target muscle, however to get the most from it I would recommend having one of them being a dumbbell press rather than a barbell for added variety and range of motion. Hope that helps!

I'm no health expert, but I would guess that smoking in general would affect your lung capacity some in the long run.. probably pot is better than US corporate made tobacco infused with hundreds of harmful chemicals. At least pot is natural, especially if you're vaping it vs normal burning smoke. Hell Arnold Schwarzenegger said yes, he was really smoking a blunt in Pumping Iron, and he *did* inhale (as pot was pretty popular in the 60s and 70s) and it didn't seem to keep him from winning Mr Olympia 7 times.. Train hard and Enjoy life!

Hey Jeff, What should I do to get rid of upper trap and lower neck tightness/pain whenever I raise my arm up and abduct. My range of motion with external rotations has also decreased and stretching my chest or rotator cuff hurts my traps.

The upper traps does similar actions as the levator scapulae. Look at the levator stretch in 'How to fix rounded shoulders' but rather than reaching up, reach down and around.

Jeff I have pain on the inner side both fron and back of left elbow its been there since a few years now (doctors said it was growing pains) but it should have been gone by now It click while even pushing up Also this pain attachees to my shoulders

27 seconds in. Please answer my question! What do I do if I cannot do workouts that rely on the wrist such as waiter curls, pushups, dips and many more? I have early arthritis in my wrists and if I do strenuous activity, then I have to wait 2 weeks and stop my 5 day a week work outs. Is there anything to relieve the wrist pain to do the awesome variations?

Hey man, the first thing you can do is wear wrist straps which provide support for the wrist while you're training, and the other thing you can do is to use variations of those exercises which allow the wrist more freedom rather than being stuck in place, for example, copying a waiter curl movement but using a cable and rope attachment rather than a dumbbell as it will be a lot easier on the wrist. Hope that helps

Jeff, this video was posted 58 min ago I hope I still make the cut for a question! I am going into the final month of AX-1. I have seen great results but I am constantly staying in a calorie deficit of 500 cal at least and on some days a 1000 cal deficit. I have gone from around 21% bodyfat to around 13% - 14% bodyfat in the past few months. I feel like I am not necessarily getting any stronger and I am also having a lot of joint pain from trying to lift weight that I maybe can't handle but feel like I should be able to handle. Also I am starting to feel much much more Hungry and I am having a harder time staying the deficit. My question is should I eat more. My goal is to become lean obviously and my calorie deficit has served me so well I am afraid to let it go out of fear of losing the little bit of abs I have which is a 4 pack, sometimes a six pack in the right light. I just need some guidance at this point in my fitness journey. Should I keep going until the bottom of my belly comes off and the little bit of love handles and back fat or I should I eat more to get better performance and trust the fat will eventually come off?

Hey man, the issues you mentioned such as joint pain are all side affects of being in too large of a calorie deficit for too long of a time. I would definitely suggest increasing your calories to maintenance for several months and focus on building your strength while maintaining the progress you've made, then when everything is comfortable and ready, enter a slight calorie deficit again and slowly cut down over time. Hope that helps !

Triceps can arguably be one of the easiest muscles to develop, reasons being that almost all chest workouts also affect triceps. Everything Jeff said here are all on point. I experience some of them.

Hey man, junk volume is volume which isn't productive towards what you want to achieve. This is typically when people are doing too much and lose focus towards the end of the session which leads to sets which aren't going to give you any additional benefit on top of everything else in the workout so far. Essentially, each thing you do in a workout should be for a reason and in order to create a desired effect, once you've reached that limit, adding more on top doesn't get you more results, it's just wasted time. Angles matter so much for triceps, and pretty much every body part we're trying to hit effectively. I really like the tip about posture though. If you place yourself in a position that allows you to cheat on the movement, guess what we're gonna do? We're gonna cheat the movement! Keep the rest of your body in a good position so that your triceps take the load and not a bunch of other body parts. Thanks, Jefe!

Hey man, sometimes not being able to fully extend a joint is due to genetic structure and cannot be changed, but it's likely you'd know about that if it was the case. Other things you can try are working on the mobility of the muscles around the joint as they may be overactive/tight, limiting the joints movements. Hope that helps!
