Great list, but I’d make 2 small modifications: 1. I’d go with a pair of medium brown wingtips as the second shoe choice. Obviously this is personal preference, but I wear my wingtips the most. 2. I’d go with a navy grenadine over black. I think it’s more versatile and just as elegant and classy as a black one. Thanks!
Noted, my man! A lot of viewers said that they would pick navy grenadine over black as well. It’s funny, I have both and wear the hell out of the black although I like them both. I find it more versatile since I can wear it with all my suits which are mostly gray and navy. I would never wear a navy tie with a navy suit. But I don’t think there’s a wrong answer.
What up Fam!!! Another Excellent video my brother working on the list, keep the information coming ⏸️ truly appreciate the wisdom being shared. Black toe oxford imma go Carmina recommended last for first pair ?? I'm currently rocking Nas - Magic, Kings Disease I,II & III in heavy rotation 👊🏽👍🏽💯✌🏾
Absolutely Jean! My watch in the video -although that tank design isn’t for everyone- is the least expensive watch I’ve ever bought. The regular price is $199 and I bought it on sale for $99. Best money I’ve ever spent 😂
Vladimir, Great Content as always! I have watched this video several times, and I CANNOT come across anything that you stated that I would disagree with. You REALLY know your stuffs when it comes to Menswear! Compliment mon frere!
Solid list! I'd include black cap toe oxfords as a must for first round job interviews. Since you asked: I'd switch out the tassel loafers for suede penny loafers (I personally find tassels old fashioned). Suede monk straps could be another alternative. Oh and I'd swap the black grenadine tie for a maroon grenadine tie which I think is far more versatile and flattering. Even dark navy will go further within a capsule. How many funerals do people actually go to?!
What’s up, Anthony! I own a few grenadine ties and the black one is by far my favorite. It’s versatile enough to be worn to a funeral or with my navy or charcoal chalkstripe suits. It’s a matter of preference, but I just don’t want it to be mistaken as a funeral tie. It’s so much more than that. As far as the loafers, I do have a lot of guys that bring up pennies as their top choice over tassels and I don’t have a problem with it. I prefer tassels for the visual interest that they provide and find them a lot cooler.
Great list brethren Would you consider doing a video on minimalist-style lapin pins like the one you have in the video Its very stable but adds the perfect touch of flair to the suit Salutatuons and respect 💯
Cant forget about the Chambray shirt my guy! Chambray is a durable and breathable fabric, it adds a tiny bit of texture and visual interest in a monochromatic look and is an absolute workhorse in my wardrobe
Great choices Vlad as usual. Dark brown suede oxford 24/7. I 've never seen you with a dark blue grenadine tie and I notice you always mention it in your must haves.
Thanks, bro! I’m actually recommending a black grenadine as opposed to navy here but I do own both colors. My favorite ties are foulards hence why you don’t see me in many other styles. But here’s a rare appearance of the navy here 👉🏾 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i9U4kMpqZmA.html and the black has been worn a few times like here 👉🏾 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z1AQRx1FmOs.html
Second shoe I'd recommend a dark brown derby or blucher with some broguing. A dressier chelsea or chukka boot could also work, especially in bad weather. I agree on watch sizes for proper dress and would go with something on a bracelet if you live in warmer climates. Leather straps are great in cooler weather and give you an option of swapping colors to match your shoes and belt.
You mentioned that RL dark purple polkadot tie was the first you ever purchased. Maybe your next tie design can be something like that!;) In grenadine of course.
Great Essential List , right on point. That Black Grenadine Tie recommendation , I agree w/ , simple, effective and versatile. Building my wardrobe off quality suits, colors Navy,Black,Charcoal Gray & Light Gray & a Navy Blazer. So I can be ready for any occasion . Will branch out from there. Thx for the tips and keep the content coming ..
10 s a nice round number and I wouldn’t remove anything from this list but I would add the following: - A pair of brown suede Chukka boots. - 2 pocket squares (1 all white linen, 1 multicolored mural in wool or wool/silk). - I would say 5 more essential ties but that’s just me splitting hairs and / or being difficult.😅
@@v_r_ It's been a tough few years. I hope things haven't been too bad on your side. Best wishes, and I am looking forward to seeing more of your videos!
I do love a good list video. As always very solid advice. I've been looking at different companies for trousers, I really like high waist trousers. I'm about 2.5 hours from Toronto was thinking of heading to Spier & Macay to check out their stuff. Figure once i nail in my size then i can do the online order. I can't stand returning stuff if the fit isnt right on. I know your a fan of S&M. Is it worth my drive up into Canada a couple hours to do some shopping? Thanks in advance....keep up the vids! Have a great day.
Thanks for your kind words. List videos are some of my favorites too. I would recommend a visit to the S&M store for sure. I wish I lived that close to one as there’s nothing like seeing stuff in person before pulling the trigger.
Loved this list. Great idea to bring suede in to make the second pair of dress shoes more casual. Love the watch as well. Great picks! I'm glad too you brought up formalities with the watches. I would have definitely made that mistake. I feel like you could do an excellent wardrobe essentials for each season and it would be really helpful! Thanks for the great content!
What's up Vlad! Split toe derby's for me, and don't forget the pocket square. My main dress watches are a black Junghans Max Bill 38mm or my silver Nomos Ahoi Datum 40mm. Excellent video as always! ✌️❤️
Appreciate it, Jonathan! Unfortunately since I was keeping it at 10, I couldn’t fit everything in. In your opinion, what would you take out to include a PS?
@Vladimir Riché I can't think of anything to take off, I was surprised you could get it down to 10 ! And Grenadine is my favorite type of silk tie, I love its texture and weight ! 👊❤️
It really depends on the client for my top 10 list... lol Charcoal suit, white shirt, light blue shirt, navy and black grenadine ties, 1 cap toe oxfords, 1 dark brown half brogue, 1 top coat in black or navy, white pocket square and a time piece. Replace the pocket square with a navy blazer if client never wears suits lol. But honestly, that's just me trying to cover all the bases for wear I live, most clients I have ignore half of that list haha. Always love these vids man. When I train new salespeople Imma spend em here first lol
Vlad, really good video! Could I give you a suggestion? In the intro, the gun sound comes a quarter second after the last beat of the compass, so if you look at it again in the future please put it on tempo! It's one of my pet peeves 😂😂
Hey Vlad, what do you think about Wholecuts? Also, are you familiar with Mezlan shoes and if so, what do you think of them? Solid list and great video as always 👊🏼
What’s up, Elijah? I’m familiar but have never seen them in person. So I can’t really vouch for their quality. As far as wholecuts, I don’t love them personally because they’re more prone to creasing at the camp because it’s just one piece of leather.
Glad to see you back on RU-vid, Fam. I gotta disagree with the black captoe oxfords. I work in a corporate setting and rarely wear a black suit, which is the only time I'd wear black captoes. Other than a funeral, or Black tie event, I can't think of a time I'd actually wear black captoe oxfords--they're kinda "dated" IMHO. As an alternative, I'd rec. black wholecut oxfords because they are more modern, sleek, and stylish. They can and can be dressed up or down, so you'll get a lot more versitility out of them than the cap toes.
What’s up, fam? I have to wholeheartedly disagree here. I teach Classic Menswear and nothing that I talk about is outdated as this isn’t fashion. A BCTO and a wholecut is just a matter of preference as they play the same role. I would never recommend that someone wear either in a casual setting.
My Alden Dark Brown Suede tassel loafers are absolutely most versatile shoe I’ve ever owned! Goes with almost anything. By the way, I have the same watch in silver. Love it! Great video!
Thank you! I’ve definitely heard of it but don’t abide by it at all. I think it’s super old school and played out but it is a thing. What I do strongly believe is that the watch should be plain as in no date window or second hand.
A watch with a tux is certainly acceptable. But it has to be the right watch. No complications (maybe a second hand but definitely no date window). It must be small. The tank is on point.
I wear an old (circa 1948) 14K Bulova clean-faced tank watch with my very formal clothes (esp a tux). It was my maternal Grandfather's watch he wore during the Korean War while he served (not on the FLOT). Still runs very well, needs serviced though. Always something to do. Great video.
Can't argue with these, except for the grenadine I would go with maroon, navy and green before black. good content man, keep em comin! For watches low end, Seiko and Orient have so many nice looking watches that get respect from everybody. I've been eyeing that Seiko "Tank" too, but I may get their Seiko 5 GMT first.
Another classic bro! Im a loafers guy so I would go with the loafers as my second. Been getting into split toes more often though so in a year it could change haha.
Vladimir, it’s great to see you back posting videos on RU-vid. You disappeared for a couple years and I missed you. I was actually worried that Covid got you. Welcome back! I would pair the split toe derbies.
All spot on, as always. You are a pro, after all. But I'm not partial to wearing brown shoes with gray trousers. I know it's ok, but I prefer black loafers with blue blazer and gray trousers. Or, perhaps, black brogues. I also prefer Burgundy or Ox blood over brown shoes most of the time when pairing with gray or blue. Again, it's just my preference.
Your expert advice was missed during your hiatus. Great video with absolutely on the money insights as to how to dress with classic style. I always thought Alan Flusser was the “man” but damn you’ve taken his place. So glad you’re back.
You’re far too kind, Robert! Alan is a legend, I’m nowhere near that right now but I appreciate it. It’s always great to hear when someone gets what I’m trying to accomplish with my videos. Thanks so much for your kind words.
This is a great list! A great help to me too thank you Vladimir. I have a nice pair of Loake full brogue derbys which I wear casually, but from your options I would definitely go for the suede oxfords. I love loafers but I just can’t seem to pull them off. From your list there are three stand out pieces I’m definitely missing. The medium grey trousers, the navy blue sports jacket and the ocbd shirt.
Shoes… my two alternatives… monk boots in black or burgundy with any denim and black monk shoes with a low heel with slacks… pinstripe, window pane etc. The only other essential I would add off the top of my head is a knit polo… I like to wear a knit polo under a sports jacket, or light trench… throw all your cotton polos out unless you want to wear them to the gym. Mata!
Awesome suggestions for wardrobe essentials top-notch advice as always you are definitely on point I would go with the split-toe suede dark brown shoes nice touch see you got jokes wearing your diver watch with your suit if you plan on swimming in that suit😆
You definitely checked all the boxes. I guess I learned something from you and a few other guys; I've got it all ... plus a couple of personal touches. I actually am suited and booted; I wear Chelsea boots with suits. And I wear divers or chronographs with everything from suits to jeans. (James Bond wears a diver with suits. And all those guys who went to the Moon are still wearing their Speedmasters)
What’s up, Michael? I’m glad that the content is helpful? As far as James Bond, you are correct. The problem is, there’s really one one James Bond…LOL. Cheers!
Hey Vlad welcome back. All good tips but I have to fight you on the watch comment. I exclusively wear divers and chronos with suits lol... I only pull out the Vacheron for black tie.
What is the lug width for the Seiko square watch (Cartier tank style) that you have? I have the same one in gold that I will definitely order straps for when you release them.
Thanks so much! You will love your grenadine tie. A lot of guys in the comments are vouching for navy which I also own and it’s great but my black one gets the most use.
Depending on one’s lifestyle, I’d say a tux is essential. But I try to keep it as relatable as possible as I know a bunch of men that haven’t worn a tux in years. With that said, what would you remove to include the tux?
It's like you mentioned with the black captoe oxfords, tux is not versatile and it's formal, but it's very necessary. Nearly every guy would get invited to some black tie events, in which case a proper tux is the only option. Chuck it on with the white shirt and black captoes, perfect. I would forgo the watch first, blue shirt second. I'm a big fan of crisp white shirts, they can match everything. Rocking up to a black tie in a charcoal suit blue shirt....nah. By the way great vid man, and yeh wouldn't wanna keep it on the low for sure! 😂
Suede is too addictive. I have a pair of dark brown KOIO sneakers and I want more suede items. I actually bprefer it over normal leather but that'd be one dimensional.
I went for a pair of dark brown suede Oxford wingtips as my second pair of dressier shoes. They are as casual as oxfords can getand could be worn with denim, but it never feels right for me. In retrospect a pair of derbies in the same configuration or suede split toes would've suited me better. I will probably go for some dark brown scotch grain leather wingtip or split toe derbies for next pair ... and a pair of Adelaides ... and perhaps my third pair of chukkas. The struggle is real.
living in nyc the seasons all have their extremes. In the summer i prefer 100% cotton unstructured seersucker blazers, I have a few in stripes, Black/White, and two in multi colors, both really unique. Although its difficult to find one in a solid navy, and suggestions? What do you think of navy cap toe oxfords....instead of black?
I don’t know if there’s a shirt rule per se but I always recommend that the shirt is lighter than the jacket. I’m a simple man, so I stick to basic colors like white and blue and let my ties and pocket squares carry the weight up top. Here’s my “How To Pair A PS…” video. A very good one if I may say so myself. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Wz7MH6ccSyo.html
could you please share a link to the gray suit you're wearing here. I've found a heavy suit on S&M but not sure it the same one. also, could you recommend on a charcoal / medium dark gray suit that suits 4 seasons or spring summer (very lightweight to lightweight. I suffer from heat as many men). keep up you're great
Damn I’m glad you made a video bro. I have been looking for your videos almost three years. I subscribed one time before and got a new phone. You were helping me get my game right . I couldn’t remember your name damn here you are lol
I was waiting for you to mention a pair fo dark brown split toe Derby. One pair that I do not have and I am now looking for a pair. Spending too much time looking at Carmina, TLB or Carlos Santos. Not going to lie I have also looked at Paolo Scafora, Stefano Bemer and Enzo Bonafe. Mehra order I just missed such a shame.
@@v_r_ Dear Vladimir, thanks for the recommendation. I purchased laces from Kirby A. By the way, let me take the opportunity to say that I look forward to your videos. I often watch your videos before I go to class because your videos are relaxing. What you do with your channel is very important, at least in my view! Too many men nowadays dress poorly. I am sure you are a great inspiration for many of them. My colleagues always ask me why I teach in a suit and tie. One professor said to me , "I got into this business so I don't have to wear a suit." I responded that I got into this business precisely because I can wear a suit. Funny how so many men think that wearing a nice, comfortable suit is some sort of punishment! I would be glad to meet you in person one of these days and have coffee. This semester I teach in Brooklyn every Wednesday. All the best!
It’s the lady’s version but there’s really no such thing in this scenario as it’s exactly the same except for the size. That’s just the way that Seiko markets it. Cartier’s lady watches actually had diamonds around the bezel, which makes sense in that case to call it that. As far as the size, you’re right. It is small but that’s how I wanted it since the “men” version is way too big, I tried it on. To me when talking about these type of tank design watches, I prefer it on the smaller side plus the plan is to wear it with a tux.
My Cartier Tank watch was stolen and not recovered. Not wanting to spend the money I also opted for the Seiko tank watch homage. You made a great choice.
By the way- back in the day ( the thirties) when men really dressed and there were style icons like Cary Grant and David Niven and the Gatsby look was “ it” men’s watches were small and without date windows and sweep hands. Cartier was always the way to go but pricey. The Seiko homage is a great choice and one that I’ve had for quite some time. I have to say that your advice and style are really spot on and I am so glad you’re back. You were missed.
Neglected to add that Grand Seiko is a fantastic brand. I have a Seiko Sarb 035 they call the baby Grand Seiko - great watch if you can get one( out of production). Got rid of my Rolex when the market took off. Don’t miss it a bit. Love my Seikos
I’m a big Seiko guy, maybe too much as I need to expand my collection a little bit. The SARB035 is one of my favorite pieces. I was lucky to snag one a couple years before they discontinued it. Here’s the video I make in it a few years ago. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z1AQRx1FmOs.html
No coats? 😮 I love coats and i was hoping you talk a little about them because i'm in the process of lurning things about meanswere and i'd like to know more. I"m basicly obsessed with coats i pay more for suits since i"v lurn about full canvass but really coats is what i love the most. I'm hunting for a polo coat, boggi milano had one killer coat but this year was in taupe i didn't thought i like that color, now i regreat not buying it. An hour ago i found one a ...mid blue color on piniparma site full wool loro piana 750 eur. What is your take on that you think is worth it? What's your opinion on polo coats giving the fact that they are double breasted i guess you don like them? 😅 And what kind of coat do you prefear? Thank you, glad i'v found your channel i'm lurning thing that help me in the future not to waste money and look my best.
Big Bro, I need your help. Building my wardrobe…just purchased 5 suits (Spier and McKay. However, their shirts are too small. What other shirt manufacturer would you recommend? Also, what about ties…gotta search your videos because I did see one you made on ties. Lastly, pocket squares…yours seem to be a bit larger than usual creating a nice puff in the jacket pocket. I would really appreciate your direction and advice.
What’s up, James? For shirts, I also recommend Kamakura and Proper Cloth. But maybe try Spier & Mackay custom, it’s a great product that’s fairly priced. My ties are mostly from Shibumi, Aklasu, and EG Cappelli. I actually have my own tie dropping soon in collaboration with Aklasu, so stay tuned. Pocket squares are from Drake’s mostly. They’re about 16”x16”. I hope that helps.
Vlad probably means a blazer as there was no mention of pattern and the image shown was plain, although technically it wasn't a blazer as the buttons were not metal. A navy 2-button (horn) hopsack jacket with notch lapels is going to prove extremely versatile.
These days, those terms are pretty much used interchangeably. I do know the correct definition that a blazer is solid and a SC has patterns. But they’re one of the same to me when I say SC.
Oh no! I hope no one that watches me thinks that I’m sort some of snob. I know that Menswear can be very pretentious but I don’t fit in that box at all.
