Replying to this because clearly it's a hot topic: While tdm is something that a lot of people do, it didn't feel like enough people do it for it to be worthy of its own stage. I know plenty of 100+ day players who much prefer naval and never tdm. (And it definitely wouldn't be final stage if it was its own stage.) I'm definitely gonna make a bonus stages video because there's a lot of good ones here that don't neccesarily fit in the overall hierarchy well, but are worth a mention.
You missed a Stage just before and just after Pirate Legend. Before hitting PL they may do an Ashen Winds and sell a Tome only to realise it has cosmetics behind it, they equip whatever ashen cosmetic they got and immediately fall in love. This then directs them to go on that Tome grind to get as many different Ashen cosmetics as possible, for their ship, their clothes, their equipment, everything. Similarly to the Kraken/Crab/Parrot they are mostly found on Brigantines sporting the Ashen Hull (a great indicator you're about to have an easy fight). Directly after PL they start doing PL Voyages as well as Fort of the Damned with their new found insane ego from hitting PL thinking they are completely untouchable. This gets them slowly levelling Athenas Fortune to discover the Ghost Boots, Trousers and Gloves on the earlier levels. They fall in love and start to wear every single bit of Ghost they get, and their only directive for the next month or two is to acquire as much ghost cosmetics as humanly possible until they complete it. There's also a little bonus stage after this. Now that they have started to earn quite a few 'flex' cosmetics that show their accomplishments, they start to blend it all together. ''Why wear the full ghost outfit if the ghost Hat already shows I'm Athena 10? I can also wear Ashen Stuff and some PL Vanity items to show off all of my accomplishments at once''. This creates the most disgustingly glorious abomination of a cosmetic set you've ever seen. With mismatching colours and designs, It looks like the most hideous thing you've ever seen, and they know it; but at least it shows just how much they've completed in the game. After this they start to just wear what they like and maybe incorporate some flex things to satisfy the urge while also looking nice.
I'm missing one: Fort man. It starts with convincing your friends to farm forts, and then you become a fort deviant who learns to farm it solo. These people usually have a persecution mania and look every minute to see if anyone is approaching them, especially after opening the vault
My pride is being at lvl 50 Hunters call when ive never turned in more then 10 fish i caught on my own. 😂 . The ppl i was regulatly playing with love to fish while traveling and we give a lot of gems to hunters
You nailed these phases to a T. I’m at that phase where I’ve actually stopped getting salty, after grinding PvP and just getting better. What a precise way to put it. It’s just happened within the last week or so… I suddenly noticed that I’d stopped getting salty, as this gradual transition to apathetic assessment had swept in. That’s lit pham.
I’m definitely somewhere in one of the last stages. I spend a lot of time sailing around looking for wholesome experiences. Helping new players and having fun sinking experienced players with other experienced players! You never know what’s gonna happen that’s why I still play this game!
About running reapers, a few days ago as reaper 5 I finished fof and sold so we decide to hunt this reaper 4 doing skull fort. They start to run and refuse to fight. They keg us while running 3 times and still run away until we pick up a gally ally and both chase them, wind makes them faster. They sail south and eventually after 45 minutes sail straight into the Red Sea we follow enough until we realise they’re gone for good. They were willing to run for 45 minutes to save their skeleton Fort Worth of loot instead of fight just to Red Sea themselves anyways. On the bright side us a the gally had a huge party to celebrate the death of the running reapers
The whole premise of this video being an updated version of that older video is really interesting to me. As a day one player, I found my journey is better reflected in the original video. I’ve played a bit of pvp, but never felt the need to grind it or anything. There’s entire aspects to this video, I’ve basically skipped because the mechanics weren’t around when I was coming up. That being said, for newer players, I can totally see how this newer video is completely accurate. Again, this video is really interesting. It’s interesting to see how the progression of the game has changed so drastically
You didn't mention the tuck stage but tucking is a whole other realm. If im playing solo, i cruise around in a row boat full of boom kegs looking for those wholesome opportunities.
Wow, you described becoming a reaper really accurately. At least that's how it was for me, lol. Now i'm at the stage where i've really gotten into the lore of my faction and i'm able to win a fair share of battles that i was previously afraid to start.
Keep it up man the video idea was good and the commentary was also good the only thing I feel that could have been worked on was the fluidity of the transitions, they felt choppy but other than that it was a great video keep up the grind!
I be fishin, stoned as all fuck, gobbling down nootropics like flintstones gummies for extra enlightenment, signing down the mic like i don’t give a fuck because i don’t
i believe the last few can apply at any point during a sot player's journey. especially enlightenment. sometimes you'll find the rare gold collector that understands the easy come easy go way sea of thieves was made to be.
I think I'm the non-toxic, non-reaper version of a player somewhere between stages 6 and 7. I suck at the game. I know I suck at the game. So I just started gearing up to hit that Hour Glass hard to git gud sooner rather than later. What's funny is that I've felt the urge to be toxic many times to unleash my frustration at being crapped on by others, but I've found that being wholesome--especially to new players--is so much more rewarding than being a butt. Btw: I was one of those newbies who rocked the Kraken outfit. My theory on why those three outfits are popular for newbies: new players want to look a bit more seasoned then brand spankin' new ones and these outfits just look very unique and individual I guess.
Somewhere between stage 11 and 12, except i didnt realize the PvP curses exist so whenever im feeling frisky ill hop into hourglass to get some rep and then log off, I havent stacked loot since true reaper stage tho
At every stage I was like "meh not really" , exept stage 12, that one fits so perfectly for me and my mate. When you literally don't care about anything anymore and just sail around looking for a fun time with other players or helping newbies, as long as they don't dare to attack you, that'd be the last mistake they'd make on that server😂
I swear I was the only noob at the 2nd level to NOT buy the Kraken/Crab/Parrot outifts and went for something else entirely, the midnight blades stuff. I played in 2018 when it released, came back around the 2020 - 2021 mark for the ashen dragon stuff got like 60% of it then stopped playing again and came back permanently in 2022 (was still a swabee noob) and got the midnight blades stuff with the gold curse
Personally I’m none of these stages. PvP really stresses me out so I try to avoid it as much as I can, and go around vibing, voyaging or catching fish. I’ve learned to drop off my loot at various points so I don’t lose everything if someone decides to attack me. A lot of the time me and my partner play like this together. It’s nice :))
I once met an enlightened chad 1 week into playing the game during open crew and told him how I had so much trouble learning how to pvp. He took me under his wing and we did some hour glass sessions. Watching him single handed sink the other sloop while I aimlessly repaired and bucketed was a sight to see.
I'm at Stage 12. I have over 30,000,000 gold, every cosmetic I ever wanted, max level in every faction, and I no longer care about trying to get every single commendation. I want to sail around with my friends (usually with a Reaper emissary up) and cause as much craziness as possible. We help brand new players and attack everyone else. We get into tuck shenanigans, keg plays, epic naval battles, role playing, everything you can think of, and we always manage to have a great time. (The exception is hourglass. I found the wait times boring, so we don't really do that anymore.)
I'm at that stage were I'm grinding commendations but raise reaper to attract sweaty players to sink. I so the same while fishing as it's a nice break between the grind.
Stage 12 sounds 100% like me and my dudes, stoned all day and sailing around aimlessly while completing some of our last comms and sinking everyone in our way. Nice video tho, i wouldve changed some of the stages like tall tales and fishing but thats just my personal opinion.
These Stage 3 gold Hoarders are the most agressive type of players on the seas :D I love them... I am always like "I dont want to kill newby players" (under 50 hours) but when they attack first as always its so sweet snack :D
Just started playing about a month ago and love the game, I’ve already sailed as a reaper and gold hoarder and I have completed almost all the World events. I’m also really getting into the lore, tall tales and commendations, it’s my favourite part of the game. I don’t think o fit these stages lol
The other day me and my boys was fishing and a guild emissary came over sunk us told us they didn’t sell the fish and we met them at an outpost just for them to say they sold it all
Im at the end "toxic" reaper stage, I would have put me higher since im the oppisite from toxic, but when i think about what my crewmates are yelling in voice chat i remember that i havent left the toxic reaper face.
i started playing 4 days ago, never used kraken or parrot, spent estimated two hundred thousand gold to be the best fashionable with the choices avaliable. basically skipped every begginer step and im already doing athena(with my friends) and reaper 💪
I skipped some of those stages because the content wasn't there for those stages. The tall tale stage was intermixed with other stages for me. Back when I started you didn't have tall tale checkpoints so the Gold curse was a serious grind because you had to do all 9 tall tales a total of 45 times. I do TDMs occasionally but for me it's more about the interactions. It's always sad when you have people on the seas and their first and only choice is to attack and sink you. I'm in a state where I'm an educator. If I recognize a player is new on the seas I'll give them help understanding the game. I'm often looking to create alliances because it helps other players, especially the new player. I'm not sure that I actually fit your idea of player stages. On top of that, I've seen every pvp update and found everyone of them lacking in some way. Arena made people focus on PVP instead of fighting over the goal due to scoring design. Hourglass was tauted that it was in the regular seas but sucks because the battles aren't that big and basically forces you to drive in circles. FOF sucks because you could do this big fort but you might as well ignore it because you make more gold and rep other ways that are less likely to be contested. The new event voyage is going to suck for the same reason. Veils sucked when they were new because you had people who would attack you to take the loot and would ruin the tale part of the voyage. Rare just sucks when it comes to final implementation of pvp aspects when they try to force pvp. To be honest, arena could have been fixed by making the scoring purely on being able to hold the chest and turning it in. Arena was meant to be a single flag ctf mode but the scoring didn't match. Rare really needs to modify hourglass so that hourglass has its own dedicated servers allowing players to group up and have fleet battles. There are things that they could implement to keep crews fresh on the server and help crews find each other giving the battles the full run of the map instead of tiny fixed circles. I thought the whole point of having hourglass on the regular map was to allow crew more freedom of movement allowing much more strategy as well as interference from other ships. One of my favorite experiences is when I allianced with 2 other sloop crews to take down a brig and then we formed a war fleet with me coordinating as an admiral.
Forgot the seadog outfit stage mainly the hat and coat only with the rest being the sailer outfit. I've seen so many new players gravitate towards that more than the kraken or ocean crawlers
i love how a lot of players respect fisherman , like i was fishing on seapost (im new) and some guy just came gave me his storage crate with megalodon meat and left
My progression was totally different. 1. I got introdused into the game played with an open crew and did a fotd 2 became a crab lord 3 became a running reapers 4 became pirate legend 5 sweaty stacker and now Im currently on HG grind
He forgot fishmen ascended where even tdm and hour glass gets boring. These guys just fish and will happily shit on anyone who fucks with there fishing
I went from rookie to emissary to PL to tall tale while being a fisherman during every stage(still not legendary hunter of the SoT) literally skipped almost everything(and doing random things with random people is fun af)
I’m at the very very end of the hourglass grind, level 98 now and am going for the skelly curse, then I’m going for level 200 but after that I’ll get the ghost curse
I guess the closest I fit in the "ENlightened CHad" and the Tall Tale ENthusiast. I'm not super skilled at the game nor have I yet even started the Tall Tales, but I love the lore and just play pretty casually, I got cosmetics I'm satisfied with so gold isn't a big deal, and when I do get on it's just for the casual fun.
The hourgladd is actually my second stage because i love skeletons i adore them so i took it as a tutorial to get me to my best skill of pvp before going to pve content Edit: im now level 83 on servants and 53 on reapers bones
I feel like I'm in several stages. I'm a gold curse grinder right now. I've made so much gold I'm in grinding events for experience / stacking and I can sink almost anybody. My favorite time was solo sinking a galleon and sloop alliance while aboard their ship, I crashed then both into a rock and they sunk
I started 3 and 1/2 years ago so it was much different. It was mostly new pirate, admiral kraken parrot or crab set, tall taler, trying to get PL, Pirate Legend, and Athena grinders. Pirate legend actually meant something lol
I’m the type of guy to play for all factions, because I like emissary cosmetics for every emissary. But overall I think I just was the first 1-4 stages, than jumped over toxic ones and now I’m litteraly all of the stages from 8-11
i skipped stage 2 it seems. but this is hella accurate lmao. im in the reaper runner stage, stage 5, and i cannot express how accurate it is that i do not feel like a reaper. just a dude wearing reaper clothes lol edit: oh man ive been doing the fishing mini game the whole time lolol
Im at the stage now where i go around helping new players and lending a hand where i can. I complete commendations as often as i can also. I know its what my friend who taught me this game, would have wanted.
I'll love this game through and through, I am happy to not be so ticked at loosing to sweaty people. The shenanigans on the seas are always a hoot to experience! XD Shot at a brig the other evening, they weren't happy about it when I didnt say anything n sailed away after telling me they didnt have stuff. Got jumped by a skelly sloop and the brig CAME UP RIGHT AFTER. XD sunk my ship, I got the Reaper's Bounty i had and tried to row away from em. They got me in the end after like.... 30 minutes of spinning in circles XD I hope they had fun too.
This is the order I went in personally: 1, 2, 3, 8, 4, back to 8, and finally a combination of 8 and 12 As soon as I discovered Reapers my friends and I got into every fight we could find. We died a lot. We kept doing it because we still found losing fun. Now we rarely lose. I didn't get pirate legend for a long time because I stopped grinding the emissaries and went to reapers.
I see myself on the hourglass grinder (even though I'm over lvl 300) with a bit of the stage 12 atitude. I'm here's to have cool pirate combat, no drama. is all GGs at the end. Side note: I would put the tall tale guy some where at the beginning near the emissray dude XD
im in stage 7/8 going for athena's knowing im not great at pvp and cannons usually sticking to steering while my crew rage quits after getting sunk 1 time slowly making our way to the curse
I'd say, I'm a weird mishmash of some of these stages. Rookie Captain - sure been there, Crab 'n stuff - skipped those outfits completely because bleh (proud sea hobo), Emissary - definetely OOS ghost fleet enjoyer here, Pirate legend - reached that yeah, but don't care for it (except the cool hideout), Reaper - not my jam, I've literally only touched Reapers when sailing with other people who like Reapers (have sailed a lot for them through that though, cause a buddy of mine loves em 😆), Hourglass - total of 2 matches baby (I don't care for that stuff), True Athena - somewhat, I just like lore stuff and am in game not a fan of flameheart (I like to transfer my mindset into the game I'm playing and as a pirate on those seas Lamefart's terms and tone sound not so appealing to me), Tall Tales - directly after "non Crab" and still sometimes, Sweaty stacker - nope I reach Emissary 5 - I'm happy and selling, Commendations - started same time as Tall Tale stage and still going, Enlightened Chad - I'd say the lite version, as I skipped a few steps, but still the mindset, Fisherman - from day one occasionally and still going. TLDR: I've been playing enough to know what I'm doing (since jan. 2021), no real interest in PVP and generally chill but will fight if you start, don't really care about loot (unless I have some rare fish or barnacle chests aboard - I'll fight tooth and nail for them), like to help out noobs and dunk on Lamefart.
I'm in the fishing stage right now and it's horrendous I hate the players on this game so much I keep getting sunk by random people while me literally shouting out that i'm fishing and have no loot, but these idiots insist on wasting their time and sinking me all for me having to drive back to my location and carry on fishing.
Ahh, I got to pirate legend, started watching Hitbotc, and now I'm just a heist player. Always going for either a Con, stealth steal, or just pirates of the caribbean levels of manipulating other crews
I’m at stage 11. Grinding commendations and HG since there’s nothing else for me to do. I got 50 hunters call, the only thing left there is legendary hunter of the sea of thieves
well i apparently am a stereotype breaker... i just do most of the stages flipping back and forth between them, i never represented only 1 faction for a long period of time and the first things i bought was the nightshine parrot set. i have done the whole reaper galley thing but was always nice and polite as i looted the other ships.(ie. hows your day going? while in middle of boarding their ship to try and anchor them.) i see that most people fall into the stages you said tho so good job on the video just remember there are always outliers.
