Sunday 14th July, and the second Torbay Express of 2013. The first TE was diesel hauled because of the steam ban that had been imposed due to the prolonged spell of dry weather, but this week Nunney Castle was allowed to head the train, but with 47812 doing most of the work on the climbs.
We begin with two shots near Brent Knoll, the first is on a footpath crossing (with the camera locked off) and the second is by the roadside.
For this year, the water stop in both the down and up directions is at Taunton, so we were able to get to Silk Mills Lane in time to see the train creep up to the red signal at the end of the loop. Following some newly built roads, we managed to get to the footbridge at Norton Fitzwarren Junction just as the Castle was starting away, but because the footbridge is rather shaky, so is the video.
Thanks to some surprisingly empty roads , we were able to reach Churston a few minutes ahead of the train, for a fifth shot.
At Kingswear we covered the various stock movements, before doubling back to Churston to see 5029 returning from servicing at Paignton.
The return starts with two shots at Cockwood (the second one has an unexplained drop in audio volume) and ends with a fast runpast at Yatton.

I so enjoyed your video of the steam trains. I had no idea they could go so fast. The comparison at the end of the video to a modern train going by was fantastic. You can't beat the English country-side on a warm summers day! Thanx for sharing.

Thank you very much Bob. I couldn't miss the return of 5029 even if it did play a rather subdued role. It was an enjoyable day though if rather a hot one.

Thank You John. As you say, Nunney Castle was being worked lightly for a lot of the time but still made a fine sight on it's welcome return.

Superb footage Martyn from all locations; those shots at Kingswear could almost have been taken in the 1950's minus the 47 and the colour lights. Well Done...Steve & Graham

Thanks guys. I like the 1950's reference. But had it been back then we'd have been parked in the carriage sidings, next to the turntable.

Going well on Goobrington bank without the 47 helping. How Mediterannean Kingswear looks. Two lovely shots at Cockwood, the 47 doesn't clash too much, being green. At least they used a classic loco rather than a Skip.

Thanks very much. I agree about the 47. It wasn't uncommon in the early sixties to see a Castle sent out to rescue a failed Brush type 4.

Great bids. I would love to learn more about why 5029 seemed to run so much better during it:s last period on the network. Has it anything to do with the mechanical lubricator fitted & did that provide a "special" supply level of oil ?
