Past Led Zeppelin's second reunion and backstage BEEF, Robert Plant was back on the road with his five-piece band promoting Now and Zen full force. Jimmy Page scheduled his first and only solo tour for the fall of 1988 along his four piece band of Durban Laverde on Bass, John Miles on vocals and Jason Bonham on drums. This was a tale of two sides with a cameo by John Paul Jones and The Mission, Jimmy Page the Outrider and the hugely successful 1988 energies of Robert Plant. #jimmypage #ledzeppelin #robertplant #documentary #johnbonham #johnpauljones

What an excellent quote at the beginning from Peter Grant, on how to be a good manager. Under all that gruffness and minor thug tactics he displayed over the years, he genuinely believed in (and clearly loved) the band.

Saw the last two Jimmy shows at the Ritz. Waiting outside for hours to get to the front, no barrier between the low stage and floor, could have easily reached out and touched Jimmy's shoes at many points. The absolutely most amazing musical experience of my life. Singing along with the entire crowd to the instrumental STH brought tears to my eyes. Still have the ticket stub.

Would have killed to be at those shows - so close to the man doing his thing! From the boots I have, he was in great form both nights. The first night sounds a little better than the second to my ears. I think the crowd was a touch more enthusiastic the first night. But you were there - you would know! I caught the tour in Oakland about a month earlier. I had pretty good ground floor seats. To this day, it's still the best show I've ever seen. Just magic. I got the boot for that one like a month after the show (dude did an amazing job), and it was another killer night for Jimmy.
@colozoso
@colozoso Год назад
@@hydrangeablue8928 It was truly magic, as you say. I was too young to see Zep in the 70's, but finally saw Jimmy live for the first time at a Firm show in Binghamton in 86. I was disappointed, TBH. My perception of Jimmy playing live all came from the Song Remains the Same movie. Lively, dancing, etc. For this particular Firm show at least, he was white as a ghost, barely moved and was leaning against the drum riser for the first few songs. He played everything perfectly, but I wondered how much longer he would be around. On the Outrider tour he was completely rejuvenated and hearing live Zeppelin songs for the first time was life changing. After Who's to Blame and Prelude, they ripped into Over the Hills, and holy shit the place went insane. Plus, on the Firm, he rarely played any of his Les Pauls. His live tone on the Les Paul through the Marshall stacks (including the Zoso mark on one of them) was simply thunderous. Nothing I had heard before or since has ever come remotely close to those two nights.

I remember the first time i saw a cd of Page's Outrider album I was in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I had just joined the Navy and was going to radar school. A friend who i was in radar school with was a huge Zeppelin and just bought the album and showed it to me. My first reaction to the album was mixed, on one hand i was like cool Jimmy's playing again and on the other hand i was like Ah who cares it's not Zeppelin. I didn't get a chance to see it because the Outrider tour never hit the Virginia area but i might have gone since my friend probably would have convinced me to go. The first time i heard music from the tour was 10 years later when i acquired a bootleg called Midnight Moonlight which was supposedly from the Dayton , OH show on 10/21/88. I thought it was fantastic, his playing was very inspiring. Over the Hills and Far Away was amazing and i really liked his blues playing on Prison Blues. John Miles i thought was a fantastic choice for vocals. He sounded great. I agree that Jimmy should've done more music with Miles but for some reason they didn't continue. It's unfortunate because they really had something going I thought. The next thing Jimmy did was with Coverdale but again it didn't last. I think they did one album and a few live shows in Japan but they never toured the States. We did get some great music from Jimmy in the 80's but I'm sure he could've done bigger and better but then again he had achieved so much with Zeppelin already. I loved the 80's, there was so much great music being made and it was all around us on the radio and MTV. I really enjoyed the 80's and the whole decade seemed to fly by like a music video.

Jimmy Page's Outrider tour setlist looks awesome. Interesting to hear how Robert was the hand brake in relation to re releasing Zep material and unreleased material. Seems Robert was fixated in his own image. Mick Jagger syndrome is how some explain it. Just as a side note if I go to a chain CD store in Sydney in 2023 it's very easy to find Robert Plant CD's, but very tricky to find any Jimmy Page or Zep material. Not sure if thats because the Plant CD's a dust collectors, or he has a much better label deal.

Interesting note on the CD store stats, i guess the overexposure of Plant maybe led to collectors thinking, "hmmm i'll get that copy later on". Robert had an internal conflict with himself i believe, i have some theories. As they saying goes, tell me what you brag about....

I believe Jimmy stopping his solo career actually made it more valuable to get the Zeppelin re-releases and live stuff you know? Regarding Jason’s drum solo, for the time it was different, with the electronics and all, it lacked a little groove and soulfulness, but it was ok, not the greatest but interesting. I met Jason after one of his Bonham Experience tour shows, I had an intimate conversation with him about his Dad. One of the best moments of my life. He told me about when his Dad brought home the Zep 1 album and played it for his family with the lights dim and how proud he was. Jason recalled when it started with “You’re Time is Gonna Come” with Jonesy’s church organs and when his Dad kicked in with the drums how excited they all got. We talked about how the beginning had a haunting feeling of being in church and such. We both somehow connected it to the movie “The Exorcist” and it freaked us both out. Awesome conversation, the closest I’ll ever get to Zep and Bonzo. I’ll never forget that moment.

I saw Plant on that '88 tour, it was the first where he played Zeppelin stuff on stage. I remember the biggest response was when he went into I'm in the Mood. I know we appreciated the job his band did with the Zeppelin material, because the "reunion's" had been such a massive let down. I have to try and get over my complete disdain for the '80's, it's my own hang-up. I had an awful time in the '80's, lost a close relative to suicide, had a significant drug & alcohol problem, it was not fun. I'm slowly starting to see the time through different eyes, I think these videos have helped in a way. So, thank you Jose! You have done a magnificent job with everything you have put up for us all to remember, and enjoy. I am returning to an old hobby of storytelling, i enjoyed this in the past but got lost because most my musician colleagues were not interested, nor the audience, etc, but know i am so grateful to connect with people from other countries to realized the unifying power of music. This 80s series has helped me put time and life into perspective with some personal situations at the moment. Despite endless hours of editing and such, i am thrilled with the result. My commitment is 100% into creating content that honors Led Zeppelin but also, serves as tool to voice what many of us think and it's finally captured in this visual archive. Yet another great insight to the post Led Zep window, and again JCM, you continue to provide such quality material.... Every time I see Plant, and this may annoy people, I dislike him more and more. The ego laid bare, and in times where he complains about the Led Zep legacy, but continues to milk that legacy by playing those songs that made him famous in his own band, most likely knowing very well it's going to draw attention to him. Diplomatically ragging and mocking Jimmy under a thin veil is something that makes me really not like Plant more and more. Without Zep (Bonham, Jones and Page), Plant would be nothing. NOTHING. Yeah, he had his little band after, but I suspect it was driven by those hanging out for the very Led Zep numbers that he (Plant) often whined about. "Physical Graffiti was the last good record *** I *** made. Says it all. It wasn't just you Plant - I feel like saying : " Go f*** yourself". Rant over.
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Год назад
I feel you Tom, Robert in the 80s can definitely annoy people but at the same time i think it makes me value his 2010 - nowadays period so much, he even states he was crazy in the 80s. But yeah, if we look were Plant was before joining Zepp, he was directionless and Page gave him something so valuable, i believe he suffered from impostor syndrome, heck, even Bonham told him, just look good because you can't sing this well night after night. His insecurities were HUGE despite his looks you know? Psychologically speaking my research is helping me construct the band's dynamics to better understand the WHYs. But i really appreciate your "rant" it's the kind of conversation i want to see from these videos. Plant's ego was so big in 1988-1992 that by the time Fate of Nations came, he was drained, thus the 90s for me seem like a similar playbook from 1968.

As for Pagey and Robert touring separately? I'm not sure who I'd choose to see if I had to pick only one? Maybe Pagey. And as for drum solos, I've never really understood them, perhaps the idea came about so they could let out some steam (doing fills) while the rest of the band took a break. Another great one, thanks man! I really like how you waited a full 13min before you started narrating and just let the cast tell the story. Well done...excellent restraint. And you weave these stories so well, including the tangential stuff like the Santana/Satriani bits. I'm with you on the Jason drum solo. Too long, too much goofy 80s nonsense. I hope you keep this going long enough to cover when Jonesy started making more public appearances. I admire his post Zep work the most.....staying mostly under the radar, and we he did pop up, he kinda proved to me that he was actually musically the heaviest of the Zep members. And he generally keeps his mouth shut, which is always good. I do wonder why Page doesn't mention that he might make more music with Jones.....I wonder if there's some bad blood there?

Thanks for sharing your comment and kind words Dave, really. Waiting 13 minutes you know, i just felt the story had a flow that i didn't wanna interrupt, i am a fan after all and well, my voice is just a means to go into the adventure, not the main protagonist like other dudes like to hear themselves all the time lol. That drum solo yeah, controversial right? hehe. The Santana and Satriani bits come from a place of deep admiration for both players indeed. I think Jimmy and JPJ never got to work again because of some silent grudges Jones had in the songwriting/credits department which he would later acknowledge. JPJ could have won a lot of money back in the 90s with Page and Plant, i don't care how much cash he had already, that still HURTS. Jose. Another great job. Firstly is anyone in Rock cooler than Jimmy Page? Secondly I find Robert Plant's evolution & growth in the 80's/90's fascinating. Very complex and compelling personality: He calmly and intelligently rationalizes why radio dee jays who were cutting edge in the 70's sold out in the 80's to corporations because they had bills & families to feed but at the same time he refuses to play Stairway??? LOL. I find his dismissal of the PRESENCE album in hindsight to be a perfect starting place for you to dive deep into a video doc for that. Dark days in a wheelchair for Robert and what else was going on during that time? Robert always seems to have a LOVE/HATE thing with Led Zep. I feel there is something within that music family that has never been clearly explained.

The Presence door yes, is definitely waiting, i will do a DOC on Presence trust me, i just need to find time, making this is ADDICTIVE and sometimes i even forget to buy groceries just to finish the edits haha. I know believe Robert Plant ALWAYS hated Zeppelin but more from a deeper issue relating to his childhood dynamics. Brilliant Episode: Jose, you never cease to amaze me. Thank you for all the footage and commentary. This segment was very interesting. I thought Jimmy's tour was brilliant. I was supposed to see him in Louisville, but he cancelled because of the "flu." Honestly, I think he bit off more than he could chew by picking the same venues as Percy. Jimmy should've started off by playing large night clubs and work his way up to Madison Square Gardens. I hate that he had low ticket sales, but this was the time MTV popularized looks over talent. Jimmy should've done the Roger Water's approach of starting small and ending in big sold out shows. Too bad Jimmy didn't use this tour as a stepping stone to make new albums and play new tours with different singers and players. Oh, what could've been....
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Год назад
Wow, that "flu" cancellation is suspicious indeed. You are absolutely right that Page should have aimed for smaller venues, maybe Geffen thought he could pull it off? Ah, Saturdays have a new meaning for me. It was very nice to get a better look at Jimmy's solo work. I think it's funny what Robert and JPJ say about their music being sampled. Poor Lenny Wolf. He will always have to live down the comparisons to LZ. He has a great voice but when LZ hear bands allegedly copy them, they have wasted no time saying what they think. Here's a "what if" question. If anyone hasn't asked this already, everyone that has read this yet another long-winded post answer me if you want... We all know Led Zeppelin disbanded out of respect after John Bonham's death. At least one member of a successful band wants to record a solo album. If John Bonham was alive, do you think he and the band would have recorded a solo album? We still live in a time when we fans would love to see a reunion especially since they're on good terms. I don't see it happening but that's understood. We will always love them and we're grateful and lucky to hear their songs at any time.

Thank you for your comment Annette, i always appreciate the good vibes you bring! As far as your question on John Bonham into the 80s and solo work i believe he was such a big LED ZEPPELIN fan that he would have prioritized Zepp over any other material. I do envision him collaborating on other people's records, his stint with ROY WOOD in 1979 for me sheds some light to this. I picture Bonzo providing Drums for at least ONE #1 hit from the 80s in the vein of DON'T FORGET ABOUT ME. I also think Robert would have gone solo but in a more Freddie Mercury No More Mr. Nice Guy way and then come back with Bonzo telling him "YOU SEE ROBERT, YOU ARE BETTER WITH US". :)
@mattchomo
@mattchomo Год назад
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories agree, the whole 80s gated reverb drum sound that Phil Collins and Hugh Padgham developed was to mimic what Bonzo was able to do naturally. He would have been in huge demand as a guest drummer.

John Bonham was quite obvious about his loyalty to the band just as much, if not more, as Peter Grant was loyal to "his boys" Led Zeppelin. A good manager is like a needle in a haystack. It's bittersweet to watch the end of an era when you are here for every bit of it. Thanks for your kind compliment! Your archives for LZ and beyond are such a highlight to see!
@AnnetteMay1221

Well, I was actually being facetious commenting Lenny. I knew what he was doing and he might have been bitter about LZ not seeing it as a tribute for lack of a better word. Even David Coverdale got flack. "David CoverVersion" is what Robert Plant called him. I thought DC was great in Deep Purple Mark 3 even though I felt Ian Gillan was somewhat irreplaceable. At least Fastway gave them credit where credit was due. David King had admitted that Robert Plant and Janis Joplin we're his influences and not imitating them when he founded Katmandu and Flogging Molly.

Watching this today, and reflecting on the whole 80s journey. Robert definitely had a lot to be proud about in the 80s. Jimmy on the other hand didn't and comes through when you talk about the 80s chronologically, but more importantly in his playing footage. Jimmy however, in my opinion has a lot a lot, almost Zep level to be proud about in the 90s. The Coverdale Page album, the Unleded album musically (not plant's vocal), his name around circles like Aerosmith jamming, puff daddy collaboration, the walking into clarksdale maturity, and most importantly his live playing... all the way till the black crows live stuff. I mean look at his 1998 level. definitely better than many of his zeppelin years ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eXM45pGSkhs.html. long way to say, please do a 90s page video 😅😎

Okay @16:00 "The T-shirt." Just in case, I can tell you all about that preacher man Jimmy Swaggart, that piano playing, virtuoso Jimmy Swaggart, (who my mama played the piano like, with his style and gusto, at her big baptist church, too), was a big time preacher man caught WITH a prostitute, by police, in our local area where his massive church is located. This well known trailer park, housing both prostitutes and drugs, home to a local prostitute, who told all about HIM to the local NEWS almost ruined him and his church. Same ol' same ol'. (He HAD to save his church) and "HAD to save that young girl's soul too." He stated many times to reporters Don't you know? Jimmy knew all the details and the irony of it all. I think he stepped in that church a time or two to hear that big gospel church band he had. Swaggart had a very nice sound system too. "You just sometimes have got to get to the root of it all." Err Led Zeppelin complaining bands are copying them , what about all the black early blues singers they copied , pot calling the kettle black!
@joelhague5515
@joelhague5515 Год назад
Sort of, though. Led Zeppelin doesn't sound that similar to say, Howlin' Wolf or Muddy Waters. The underlying fundamental musical structures are there, but sonically the music is very different. Much louder, faster, and it incorporated a bunch of other influences. The original blues artists were fantastic, but they never composed a song like "Kashmir" or "What is and what should never be." For sure they nicked parts (as did all the original American blues musicians, too, somebody had to invent the shuffle, etc), but they were making something new as well. Zeppelin's biggest offense was not crediting/ compensating the original artists when nicking lyrics and small parts.
@joelhague5515

Willie Dixon would be the archetypal example. He clearly wrote the lyrics, thus, he should have been credited as a songwriter.

Mike i understand you argument and it's valid of course, the thing is British bands took the inspiration from Blues artists and at least re-interpreted the material in a way that those early recordings couldn't. I am aware of the accusations but you cannot take away the fact that Nobody's Fault But Mine or When The Levee Breaks are if not, majestic versions of blues ideas. The problem with KINGDOME COME and other acts, is that the showed no respect to previous bands nor consumed the original source, thus it becomes a parody and the general public then thinks ANYBODY can do it, therefore the message and intention is lost, and well....modern day music is filled with this! Plagiarism is an interesting topic when it comes to Led Zeppelin. I kind of felt they were pretty hypocritical in this regard and probably should have been above it all. They stole so much stuff over the years and Plant copied the singing style of several as well. And if bands went too far then sue them. Although even "Get It On" ripping off Kashmir was probably not winnable in court. They probably did make the right decision in not suing the Beasty Boys though as I think that probably helped attract new fans and was a net positive.

One thing that kills me with 80s music is the chorus effect on the guitar. It takes all the balls away from the tone and many many 80s albums and live performances have this issue. I just noticed when Plant had Brian Setzer and the other guy as a guests, the guitar tone all of a sudden went from sounding really ballsy to blah because of said effect. A perfect example of this chrous effect ruining music happened when i saw the Allman Brothers back 20 years ago or so (yes not the 80s) and Dickey Betts had been arrested and was in jail, so they had to find a guitar player to fill in at their Great Woods mass show. Well Zakk Wylde from Ozzys band filled in and the guy could play the Allmans stuff, but he used a chorus pedal and it was like the worst thing you could do to that music imho. All of a sudden the in your face oomph of many many guitar players tone was lost and this blah sound was there instead. I noticed in your other videos youve put up discussing the 80s, i keep hearing this constant reminder of why im not a huge 80s fan haha. From the Keys and Synths to the Chorus on the guitars, to electric drums. The feel of the music suffered and this is a big reason i dont listen to many Zep members 80s albums. When Page n Plant did their first tour together in the 90s it was so nice to hear them take the music to new places, and the tone was there again. What are your thoughts folks, Chorus. Yay or nay ?
