Australia is in the midst of both environmental and social crises. With the highest rate of biodiversity loss on earth, the country is facing an ever-increasing barrage of massive catastrophic wildfires that wreak untold environmental damage and its First Peoples are among the most disadvantaged and disaffected demographic.
In the 2020 Narrm Oration, Associate Professor Fletcher will argue that many of Australia’s current environmental problems can be traced to the impact of British invasion and the violent and devastating effects this has had on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Embedding the Aboriginal world view and notion of Country into mainstream Australia has the potential to benefit the lives and livelihoods of all Australians and our Country.
Associate Professor Fletcher is a descendant of the Wiradjuri and a geographer interested in the long-term interactions between humans, climate, disturbance, vegetation and landscapes in the southern hemisphere with a particular emphasis on how Indigenous burning has shaped the Australian landscape. He is Director of Research Capability at the Indigenous Knowledge Institute, Assistant Dean (Indigenous) in the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne, and a panel member of the Australian Research Council College of Experts.

Me mihi ki te Kaihanga, ki a Papatuānuku, ki a Ranginui, me mihi ki te tangata whenua o tēnei wāhi, Te Whenua Moemoeā. Beautiful and thank you for sharing so much through this Narrm Oration. Without a doubt there is a depth and breadth of indigenous knowledge that has long been overlooked, berated and worse. The interconnectedness of EVERYTHING is so basic to indigenous world views. I love the way you have pointed out that man DOES have an important role on the planet. If we live in harmony with all of life, everyone and all life benefits. The western thinking is far removed from ours on many levels. We need to hold tightly to that which our forebears have taught us, and share what is appropriate at the right time with the right people. There is so much I totally understand about what you are saying! Forward is the only way we can go. Aku mihi nui ki a koe Michael-Shawn.

Absolutely brilliant! Fascinating, eye opening, credible, authoritative are the immediate words that come to mind after watching Michael Shawn's oration. I believe he's right on the money. Having worked for more than two decades in a government agency responsible in part for 'fighting' fire i look back at hazard reduction and see this as a brutal treatment of the landscape, mini bushfires, politically driven and ignorant of the First Nations knowledge practised over millennia. I'm hoping that Michael-Shawn is the vanguard of a far more sophisticated generation of indigenous peoples who can open eyes and show us a better way to manage country today and in the future. Well done Michael-Shawn.

Fascinating. Thank you Michael. I look forward to your book! We need Aboriginal caretakers for each landscape region of Australia and we need to share this knowledge with non-Aboriginal peoples so that we can all care for and connect to Country.
