The wait is over, the all-new fourth-generation Toyota Highlander is hitting dealerships now. The hybrid model that carries up to 8 passenger is EPA rated at 36 miles to the gallon (and yes, this is a three-row crossover). Tom Voelk travels to San Antonio, Texas to dive both the V6 and hybrid models. He’s joined by Kelsey Mays from Cars.com.

What I like about Tom is that he speaks straight facts when it comes to car shopping. “Buy the car that speaks to you”; and especially, “minivans are much better for family duty”. I admire that. Keep it up Tom!

Tom, I just wanted to say that you’re absolutely right about the minivan thing. I had a SUV for myself. But as the number of grandchildren increased...and increased...we traded it for a nice Kia Sedona. And it’s a million times easier to buckle them in, etc. 👍

Minivans are useless since most are front drive only. Have fun driving in the winter or pulling a boat up a slippery ramp or need to accelerate quickly on a wet surface. That being said everyone should get an all wheel drive Highlander even if you live in Florida.

Brian The Toyota Sienna has AWD as an option. Tires makes the biggest difference when it comes to road performance on snow, rain etc. I believe as long as your not flooring it like a drag race then grip in rain is not going to be a big problem for the most part. For towing I cannot say what a persons needs in terms of towing capability since I don’t do any towing.

Currently a mini-van owner and have had it for 13 years. While I agree they are the best tool for the job, once your kids are older (mine are teens) it's not as much of a requirement. @@alexmobil7463 Toyota consistently builds the least interesting, least dynamic cars in every segment. They have at least made an effort with the latest Camry. It's a bit overwrought but drives well for a FWD car. Even the RAV at least looks the part as it buzzes along, eventually catching up with slow-moving traffic. There is no need for a crossover to drive like crap. The CX9 is very smooth but a bit slow. The Sorento handles well, though lacks torque. The Pilot would be great if it weren't so under-damped. All are better to drive than a Highlander.

Is the driver assist suite identical to the 2019 RAV4? A dealer rep told me it was newer, but the name referenced by the spokesperson in your video is the same "2.0" that I've tried before. Also, do you know if Toyota pushes updates to their system? I've found the lane tracing to be mediocre both because it cannot identify the lanes much of the time, and because it pulled to the right frequently. Adaptive cruise control was nice though.

Nice video Tom! I'm not a fan of how expensive family vehicles are these days. A family buying one of these rigs is sure to stay on the debt treadmill for many years to come. Personally I would (and did!) get a slightly used minivan. More practical, less depreciation, lower insurance cost, and good reliability (note I did not say great). Another winner for Toyota. It will be reliable and hybrid, now that is impressive. Content is where it falls down a bit. Telluride looks beefy. The more angular look is appealing to me at least. Palisade maybe the better value though. The high lofty warranties on Kai and Hyundai is tough to ignore, but again that Toyota reliability says the trips to Grandma's and work etc. go uneventful. Boring is what I would call this car. No drama, no panic. And with family and too much to do in life, your car needs to be your St. Bernard. Nobodý does it better than Toyota. Besides, your Camry needs a big Brother in the garage right? Good to see you Tom. Still love your Sony FS camera too!

This seems like a decent improvement, though the tiny third row is still a disappointment. This in no way comes close the Telluride or Palisade in desirability, but seems better than any other entries in the segment. Buying this will still get you Toyota's legendary reliability and resale value, which probably won't be true of the Korean twins, especially regarding the resale. The Koreans are getting pretty reliable though and have a far better warranty than Toyota.
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 4 года назад
Resale value is frequently misunderstood. Last year I traded a KIA Sorento for a 2018 model. The dealer gave me a trade-in value within $800 of the blue book estimate of the value of a comparable 2012 Highlander with similar trim, mileage, and condition. Considering that I had saved over $6000 in the initial purchase price of the Sorento compared to the best deal I was offered for a 2012 Highlander, my net savings amounted to about $5400.

The Highlander has lower operating costs and still fits in parking spaces. The depreciation, insurance, gas, scheduled maintenance, and unscheduled maintenance will be lower. Toyota will have trouble meeting demand. Toyota is aiming for affluent buyers that are doing very well in this economy. I doubt too many affluent buyers will want to be seen in a Hyundai or Kia. Hyundai/Kia will be pulling sales from GM and FCA.
