2020 Toyota Highlander | Refining The 3-Row SUV

The new 2020 Highlander doesn't change Toyota's winning formula of making a "right sized" three row alternative to big SUVs in America but it does add a welcome dollop of refinement. The new model has arguably one of the most premium interiors in the segment, a huge LCD entertainment system and a sleek new design. On the downside, it has become more expensive in the process.

My wife has a 2015 Highlander Limited Platinum, and we really enjoy the hatch window opening. We use it a lot, especially where we suspect or there could be shifting of items in the back as we've had stuff fall out before. I also wish the tray was not separated off for the passenger. I also worry about cleanability with the perforated material on the dash tray. It wouldn't be a common issue, but just thinking of how it could go wrong. I do also wish the black plastic was matte and not that shiny plastic that shows prints/dust really easily. Other than that, I think it's a great update and the MPG improvements are stellar. Of course, you also get that Toyota reliability. The only issue we've had in 65,000 miles is warped front rotors (replaced under main warranty) and a driver door lock actuator failure. It honestly feels like it's practically new, and has held up really well. Not a squeak or rattle. This is our first Toyota, and I'm sold on the quality.

Man the Highlander is cozy inside for sure. I saw a 2019 Highlander next to a 2019 Pilot on the road yesterday. It’s amazing just how much taller the roof is on the Pilot than on the Highlander. The Highlander is basically a bloated and lifted wagon posing as a crossover SUV. That shows in its overall size and overall interior dimensions. I think that despite its mainstream roots, the Highlander actually has a very specific set of customers. It’s for people who need something larger than a RAV4 but doesn’t need a behemoth and can live with the smaller 3rd row seats because they don’t really use them anyway. I personally don’t think crossover SUV’s should be much bigger than the Highlander because if you need something bigger you really aught to just get a minivan or Suburban as those vehicles are much better at performing large family duties. Overall I like the Highlander. I always liked that Toyota keeps its size in check. I think it’s a good vehicle if you stay within the range of $35,000 - $43,000. Stray too far north though, and the competition gets fierce. And I’m sorry, a $50,000 Highlander simply cannot compete with a MDX or X5, or dare I say a Hyundai Palisade.
@cbatiau2528
@cbatiau2528 4 года назад
it's not posing as a crossover... It's NOT a crossover, no matter what anybody claims; it's a big SUV. I don't understand why people are using this term "crossover" for such a huge variety of vehicles these days. A Subaru Outback is more of a real "crossover". I have a hard time even seeing a RAV4 as a "crossover"; it's a smaller SUV, that's all.

You said the magic word for me Alex. REABILITY. That is what TMC is known for across their entire product line for many years. While their vehicles may not be perfect or the prettiest they are the ones for me. I will be buying a 2021 Highlander FWD soon primarily for this reason. Reliability also transforms into resale as well. Used Toyota products are perpetually in demand for this reason and hence the resale values typically are above the others. This translates into a lower cost to own. Do the math.

From what I have seen over the years is that Toyota and Honda not only dominate the longevity and quality aspect, but command an overwhelming edge in trade in and outright resale value as well.

Hi Alex - great review as always! Does Toyota have the TPMS on this Highlander yet? I didn't see it when you were scrolling through the info - can't believe it STILL isn't in the RAV4! I've been waiting to see the Highlander because I've been between it and the RAV - I don't like that at the Limited level the RAV doesn't have the power passenger seat either. I know this is the Highlander review, but you mentioned you have a RAV4 - do you like it? Thanks again, you do such a terrific job.

I really don't mind. Saw replacement LED DRL on Mazda Cx-5 failing at just over 36k, and rear LED taillights on GMC Yukon. 1,200 each for the Mazda. Yukon requires an entirely new assembly. These lights can be a major headache & ticket. I like the look and safety, but if these lights fail were really going to pay. These aren't even luxury cars, and I can imagine how much this auto-leveling headlight will cost to replace. It's easy to pop in an incandecent.

Hi, I just bought a new 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid XLE last night from Heritage Toyota Owings Mills in Garrison, MD. Although I did test drive it, including on the highway before purchasing, I never made it above 70 mph on the test drive. On my way home after the dealership closed, I was on the highway going over 70 mph and this hissing, whistling noise developed right from the driver's side window that was driving me crazy. It wouldn't happen if I was going below 55 and would happen intermittently when I was going between 55 and 70. I triple checked that all the windows were fully closed fully and opened and closed the doors to ensure they were completely shut but the hissing and whistling continued when I would hit 70. The only additional option I have on the car is all-weather mats, no door edge guards, and no crossbars or anything else. I love the car but hope this problem gets fixed ASAP or else it'll drive me insane. Put the volume on max, cuz the recording is from a cell phone. The RU-vid video link is below. I already took it to one dealer who were able to reproduce the whistling sound but said there was nothing they could find wrong to fix to make it better. Any suggestions on what I can do because I don't think I can go on with this problem long term. Thanks, Anan ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2IAFIFh16gw.html

I've noticed that the limited and platinum do not have the towing package available. I could not find any official information on why... I read somewhere that it might be related to the rear parking sensors. Not having a tow hitch is a deal breaker for me and possibly many others. There might be the option to get an aftermarket hitch, but these do not look as good and might mess up with the car's sensors.

From a design perspective, this highlander is like a design student's term project: both exterior and interior are sloppy, lines don't lineup, symmetry off, or simply too busy and competing. It truly showed a lack of effort and deep consideration to the balance and aesthetic, and clearly the role of consumer advocate in this project is lacking. Look at the front end and hood, it's frowning, angry, sad, and gasping for air all at the same time. The interior door panel, rear exterior side panel, do you find yourself saying ahhh... nice curves, classic, luxurious, or perhaps muscular? Nope, the word you choose was "clean and nice". And you are absolutely correct, clean and nice was probably the best descriptive words, even Alex cannot muster better words in this video. Now Imagine being clean/nice is the major keywords to compete in this cut throat segment?! Average consumer won't pinpoint these lackluster design, or even notice the mismatch sun shade to window shape, awkward wheel bulge, busy hood line which dispates your sightlines instead of create a focal point, dash and center full of mismatch shapes, slope, recess ovals, half circle, square, rounded corner square, recess hole, protruding pieces, etc... what a mess of mismatched shapes and planes there. We consumers eyes does register these flaws, thus we Express it as not feeling it, ugly, don't look luxurious, etc. Etc. This is not Toyota being conservative, this is a critical project done poorly, design wise. Previous generation highlander was much more cohesive and better done.

This is a nice looking car. I think Toyota has been doing some nice designs lately. Not as nice as Hyundai and Kia but even as a huge Hyundai fan, I've been weary of them due to the engine recalls. Hopefully they've gotten it together and this decade coming proves better for them compared to the early 2010s. Their mid-2000s cars from 2003-2010 were almost up there with Toyota in reliability. I've always had good experiences with Hyundai. My 2010 Elantra and my old 03 Sonata are up to Toyota levels of reliability and they look a lot better than Toyota's offerings from the same period.

I know it's slightly unfair to compare to my $7,000 off MSRP deal, but it's a realistic comparison because Toyota dealers don't come off of MSRP much, if any, especially for recently redesigned models like this. And my CX-9 Grand Touring comes with features like a heads up display, 360 cam, cooled seats, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and 20 inch wheels, most of which can only be found in the Highlander Platinum trim which is near $50,000.

Great car by the way, for me I like most everything in it over the 2020 model except for no android auto and the lack of a selector switch for sports mode but I made due with my selector preset which is now only one press away from sport.

@@meteora767 I have both a 09 Lexus RX350 and a 2019 Highlander Limited Platinum and I will tell both are really reliable. Lexus is a Toyota and the luxury upgrade to the Highlander, both share certain parallels like their engine. Toyota mirrors their luxury Lexus brand to their Toyota brand vehicles most, not all, have a Toyota counterpart. My Lexus is at over 220,000 miles right now and the worst I had to do to it, other than normal maintenance, is a water pump.

Does the V6 Toyota Highlander have the AC inverter, or is that exclusively on the hybrid?
@naveenkrishnamurthy7576

jimmy_t I think it may be exclusive to the platinum trim regardless of drivetrain
@GigginQuick

I looked on the Toyota website. Both the Limited and the Platinum trims have a 100W outlet, but neither of them have the 1500W inverter. I’m wondering if that was a mistake. I also looked on the Highlander Hybrid page and it doesn’t even include info about the Platinum trim, but the Limited still has the 100W. I guess I’ll wait.

It's nice they went back to the 2016 look for the front end. Not. And what's with taking the extended cushion away on the driver's seat? Just like they did in the Avalon. That made the car a whole lot more comfortable. I sat in a new Palisade with the cushion extender and it was so comfortable. Not everybody has short legs. This is Toyota going backwards.

@brodiwheeler7583

NoReally ComeOn The Highlander’s longevity, resale value, reliability and low cost of ownership are proven. The Ascent is a new model for Subaru with a new motor- unproven. Not to mention that there is no way that the transmission in the ascent will last as long as the Toyota. Plus the Turbo Motor in the Ascent will mean more repairs & maintenance in the long run. The only advantages that the Ascent has are maybe interior space & cupholders. Styling is of course subjective but I find the Ascent to be very boring and boxy with no personality. Good Luck with whatever you choose!

We still have a 2002 Highlander and we went with the Ascent. Drive both and pick the one that works best for you. We had to wait 2 years to get finally get Apple Carplay, but being taller, the loss of front legroom in this years model Highlander and the design of the front passenger seat just didn't work for us. We are far more comfortable in the Ascent.

We have a Highlander from back when there were only two rows of seats, instead of three. We'd like the new Highlander because of its size but will pass because of the third row, which we'll never need -- extra weight and space taken up with that third row of seating. Too bad that Toyota doesn't offer a 2-row Highlander still -- would be perfect for many who want something a little larger than a RAV4. In fact, the third row of seating here is a joke, and with that tiny wide window, I'd be very claustrophobic. I guess it's ok for little kids, but that's the only real respectable use for it, and I'd think there are a lot of potential Highlander owners out there without little kids.

Shawn Lee The difference with Toyota is that you wouldn’t even need to use the 100k warranty... these V6 Powertrains commonly last 300-400k miles with no major overhauls or replacement with just regular maintenance.

Happy that so many people on here are Kia and Hyundai cheerleaders. I drove the Kia. It is definitely nice with a lot of features but you can tell where they had to cut corners and the worst part is the $5K markup on MSRP dealers are charging in many markets. If you think the Subaru Ascent is better than this, you have poor judgement. That CVT transmission has terrible reviews and the interior of even the top trim feels cheap. I was considering a new GX but the tech is too old and the MPG is horrendous.
