Nearly two decades ago, #Toyota introduced the car-like #ToyotaHighlander. It was based off the newly introduced Lexus RX300 which it itself was also based on the Toyota Camry platform. Its smoother ride quality and better fuel efficiency made it an instant hit with families wanting the SUV utility without the stigma of a minivan. As the segment grew in popularity, so did the #Highlander and fuel-sipping #HighlanderHybrid. For 2020, the latest versions switch to the #TNGA platform, offer the best #Hybrid fuel efficiency in the 3-row crossover segment, and give young families the tech they demand with an available 12.3" touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All these changes make for the best Highlander ever made but is it the best family hauler in America?

Good morning everyone! We actually had a chance to show you driving scenes for both the Hybrid and V6 versions. Skip to 18:43 for the hybrid full throttle acceleration and 25:00 for the V6. Watch both engines accelerate the car and let us know which one you prefer ;). Thanks for watching!

I just traded my Infiniti G37x for this 2020 Highlander LE and I am in love with it. I never looked twice at a Toyota because of their designs, but I feel like they completely turned that around because I just can't stop looking at all their new models. I'm not sure how some people are saying this thing looks ugly when compared to all of their previous models, this looks beautiful.

Woah this new model is NICE! Quite a few of my friends parents had the 1st gen Highlander way back when, some passed down to "first car" duty back when we started driving, and I gotta say those things always rode so smooth, solid, no rattles or squeaks even with like 200k miles.

The Highlander #Hybrid's 35-36 mpg is a STUNNING achievement in this class of vehicle. A loss of 11 miles per gallon is a big #PENALTY to pay when buying the V6 especially considering its expected lifespan of 15-20 years.

Thanks for the great review. You say it's such a competitive segment but few of the other brands have proven themselves up to Toyota standards when it comes to: 1. Safety 2. Reliability 3. Resale Value. As far as these go, I'd say the jury's going to be out for a few years on Telluride/Palisade, Ascent and Atlas. Plus the Hybrid MPG and 600+ range are very important to me.

Thanks for this early review, Sofyan. I was set on getting the hybrid, since I have over an hour commute each way. However, I feel I'll enjoy the V6 version better, since I owned one in 2012. I'm SO happy they kept their excellent V6 and didn't switch to a turbo-4. I currently drive a turbo-4 Kia Optima. They're great for torque throughout the range and pulling up long uphill roads without downshifting. But the turbocharger really burns oil and quickly breaks it down. On a car it's fine. But on a heavy SUV a V6 is a better fit.
@edb.8388
@edb.8388 4 года назад
You have quite the commute. You may want to test drive the hybrid before you rule it out over the V6. I prefer a V6 too - but if I'm sticking with that engine, I'd go for the Telluride or Palisade. The hybrid awd is what separates the Highlander from the crowd and I'm leaning that direction for the fuel savings. Also, they now have a 150K warranty on the battery. I used to be into HP, but now I'm into MPG. I wish you the best with whatever you choose.

Hi, I just bought a new 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid XLE last night from Heritage Toyota Owings Mills in Garrison, MD. Although I did test drive it, including on the highway before purchasing, I never made it above 70 mph on the test drive. On my way home after the dealership closed, I was on the highway going over 70 mph and this hissing, whistling noise developed right from the driver's side window that was driving me crazy. It wouldn't happen if I was going below 55 and would happen intermittently when I was going between 55 and 70. I triple checked that all the windows were fully closed fully and opened and closed the doors to ensure they were completely shut but the hissing and whistling continued when I would hit 70. The only additional option I have on the car is all-weather mats, no door edge guards, and no crossbars or anything else. I love the car but hope this problem gets fixed ASAP or else it'll drive me insane. Put the volume on max, cuz the recording is from a cell phone. The RU-vid video link is below. I already took it to one dealer who were able to reproduce the whistling sound but said there was nothing they could find wrong to fix to make it better. Any suggestions on what I can do because I don't think I can go on with this problem long term. Thanks, Anan ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2IAFIFh16gw.html

Comparing this to the Pallisade and Telluride, the only thing that is going to have people choose the Highlander is the Toyota name plate
@Kenman884
@Kenman884 4 года назад
I think the more accurate comparison is the Ascent. The Kia and Hyundai are definitely good vehicles, but I get the impression that they went for looks over ruggedness. Aside from the hybrid option, the Highlander basically seems like a more expensive Ascent with nothing to show- especially comparing the base FWD Highlander vs the Premium Ascent for the same price.

Great review thank you! So it looks like we have to choose between a hybrid or comfort (Hyundai Palisade is our other choice). Frustrating decision.

Hyundai has been getting very good reliability ratings. Since this post we have purchased the Hyundai Palisade Limited and love it!! The buying process was great, and we love the 10 year warranty.

Toyota needs a better design approach. Comparing to other car brands.

what brands? did you missed? Toyota sold 240 000 highlanders.. closest competitors: Honda pilot/passport less 200 000 and Subaru outback/forester each less 200 000

I work for Toyota and the customers agree with you on that half screen. They hate it! Unfortunately there is no way to change it.

I love the Rav4 look too, but don't want all Toyotas look the same. In my neighbourhood there is someone who owns a Rav4 an a Tacoma both in black and they look so identical! :D

Everyone hating on the new Highlander because it looks like the Subaru. You must not know that Toyota owns like 20% of Subaru. Besides that, Toyota is much more reliable and will be on the road a lot longer than the competition.

Actually, 14 years ago Toyota owned 17% of Fuji Heavy Industries which does own the brand, Subaru. It was said then that Toyota plans for 38% stake(10 years ago now) in Fuji Heavy Industries. But yes, little known fact.

Who cares about the “reliability” pitch. It looks horrendous and bland all wrapped in one big mess. Too many other reliable brands out there.

I really don't like it when people call three row SUV's 'crossovers'. I firmly believe a crossover is something like a Suburu Outback, Lamborghini Urus, BMW X4 where it looks like a lifted/vertically-stretched hatchback which is essentially what a crossover actually is- a crossover of two different types of cars.

The FACT that or has design cues from the Supra a sports car.... make this thing a winner in the design that’s just a dope fact. What interior sweet no one bad thing to say about it. Looks very luxurious. I’m digging that paint color also. The 2GR V6 motor is a beast and also best in class mpg is a winner great buy
