The Shocking Collapse of the 2021 San Diego Padres

4/15/22 Edit: Something I regret in this video is using the clip at 23:15. Not only was this clip just speculation and nothing has come from it, it's said that Hosmer has been professional through all the trade talks, which is the narrative beat writer Kevin Acee talked about in the clip following this one. The last thing I want to do is spread false information or unsubstantiated claims, especially about another person. I take responsibility and I promise to do better for the future.
Hey everyone!
While this isn't a video I wanted to make as a Padres fan, I enjoyed making it overall. The 2021 Padres came into the season with World Series aspirations. Not only did they not make the playoffs, they didn't even finish over .500. What happened? Well, this is a long story. I hope you enjoy the video!

I think its safe to say that the Padres did as good as we thought the Giants were going to do in 2021 and the Giants did as good as we thought the Padres were going to do.

The Giants did better than the Padres were expected to do. The Padres were expected to be good, push the Dodgers, and probably win the Wild Card game. That was the general consensus, they would challenge for the NL West crown but ultimately be the #1 Wild Card team. No one saw them winning 107 games

I'm from Massachusetts but I spent a couple of weeks in SD back in 2010, even got tickets for the home opener that season. When I'm not rooting for the Red Sox, I'm rooting for the Padres. I talked to more than a few San Dieagans(?), very nice folks, but pretty jaded when it came to local teams, which I understand. I'd tell them, your day will come, every team gets to the top eventually, just gotta be lucky enough to be there for it. I've been very lucky, but it wasn't always that way. I'm 42, started watching baseball around 1990, so I had a good 13 years of that hopeless feeling, it sucks. It's coming soon Padres fans, I can feel it. PS I was in SD for that Easter earthquake near mexicali. That shit was insane for a person from New England. Everyone around there was so bored by it lol

Being a recent fan to baseball and picking Padres over Blue Jays, I'm from Vancouver, I really like the fanbase, but it seems like the front office does not. I think injuries aside the main problem for Padres was that they played like highschool boys, didn't have someone in tough games to keep the morale up and an owner who is disconnected. I like the team a lot and I think our roster has great players the fans love, but those decisions like tossing Reyes are what kills the team, the way things are I can see Padres getting rid of half the team without a thought and we will need to continue getting behind and learning new players names it's frustrating and didn't pay off at all, that 2020 playoff was great and gave us so much to build on but it all collapsed so I'm not sure next season won't be worse, and then have another rebuild.

The Padres remind me of the 2011 Red Sox, those big moves during the off-season then a historic collapse, consequently leading to the manager getting fired despite an overall impressive track record during his time with the team, recriminations all around, and now it looks like an otherwise talented team is about to implode from the failure Expectations are a powerful thing, and the team that is *expected* to dominate is cursed more than most…

You’ve earned a subscription from this Dodgers fan. All jokes and rivalry aside, the baseball fan in me would love for SD to finally win a championship soon. I just hope it’s not at the expense of the Dodgers hehe. Next year will be interesting!

Great video thanks! To piggy back on your point of how the Dodgers and Rays develop players through all levels of their minor league system... My opinion on AJ Preller is this: His ego appears to be getting in the way so much that it is taking his intelligence, and making him into a fool. If he is so great at player development, why are there are so few impact major league players that they've developed in their minor league system? I am a Blue Jays fan and have no skin in the game. I actually like how there's always exciting news coming out of the Padres! A lot of people knock a team like the Dodgers for how much money they spend, however, when you look at their rosters, they have a ton of talent that they've developed in their system. They also have a ton of guys that they've traded for, that weren't big names, and made them productive. If you were to hypothetically take recently successful teams (Braves, Dodgers, Astros, Rays, and even teams like the Cardinals and the A's) EXACTLY as they were constructed, but you were acquire most of those players through free agency (money, player availability NOT taken into account), I don't think any of those teams get anywhere near a World Series. All teams that are perennial contenders (minus the A's since they trade away their team every year lol), tend to have a higher percentage of players that are developed in the organization (again, I know this is nothing profound, but this is a hypothetical and I'm not talking about finances, player availability, etc). This isn't a knock on who San Diego signed/traded for. I'm opining that Preller is not good for for the organization at all. All of the successful teams don't trade away their farm systems for a reason. It's not just to hold on to their farm hands so they can add 4 new big name players every year. Those teams are also depleting their farm systems, because their top prospects are also being lost because they're being promoted to the majors. Most seasons, all of those aforementioned teams seem to play better than the sum of their parts. Preller seems like he's just trying to get himself a ring, so he can make a name for himself. He doesn't seem to be content with building a perennial contender. I have no idea if I am correct, but he took over as the general manager in 2014 and went through a rebuild? If he's so good at player development, why would he not wait an extra year or two and consistently promote players to the majors to help them win?? Especially when they are considered a middling baseball market when it comes to baseball revenue. It doesn't make much sense to me, and sounds exactly like a guy that can't sit still and needs to micromanage everything. Does this guy need the spotlight on him every offseason and trade deadline? That's the way it seems from my perspective. This guy has been the GM for seven or eight seasons and hasn't figured out what perennial contenders do? The reason other teams don't emulate what those successful teams have done, is because they CAN'T! They lack the talent evaluations and player development. By all accounts Preller is one of the top GMs in that regard. Almost all of the teams in baseball, and definitely all of the successful one's, do not view their farm system like he does. Those other teams are trying to obtain the farm so they can build an organization year in and year out. Preller appears to be doing the exact opposite. I have no clue if I'm right, it just appears that he views the organization like he will not be there forever, doesn't care about the future, and sacrifices the whole organization and the fan base for instant gratification! They basically haven't made the playoffs in 15 years, he's been there for seven or eight with no success other than in a 60 game season. If I was a fan of the team, I would want to see an awesome product going out there most years. He's managing the team like he won't be there next year. The guy is obviously highly intelligent, but sounds like egotistical, micromanager to me. I wonder if those previous executives that complained about him were complaining about this exact thing? *Sorry for the long post. I'm not the best at articulating myself lol. Thanks again for the great video!!

I think we are closer than people think because of the collapse. Obviously, we were horrid, but Niebla and Melvin are going to be huge for stability and development. We just need some pitching depth, OF power help, and a much deeper bench to be contenders. After all, it can't be any worse than last year with the talent we have

as a long time padres fan, this season was so heartbreaking and frustrating at the same time. I had watched them turn from one of the worst to one of the best teams in a matter of what, 2 seasons? Going to petco park as a kid was boring because there was no life in the stadium and they would always lose. Then I went to three games this summer and it was probably the most fun I've ever had. the crowd was electric. I was there when they swept the dodgers and watching that moment felt like a dream. I've never seen a large group of people that excited. then of course the end of the season came and it was just like watching the old padres again. very frustrating. I hope next season is better.

The Padres and Chargers have been disappointing me since I started watching in the 90s. The final insult was the chargers leaving to LA. Some call it the Spanos curse...some say it's our punishment for living in a beautiful city with amazing weather. Whatever the case...I hope to see a championship come to SD before I die....but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the stone cold assassin Andrew Friedman? Not only did he step in late and rip the heart out of the Padres by grabbing Mad Max, he also, with no one in MLB having any clue he was even available, got Trea Turner in the same deal. A guy who was among the handful of best players in the league, but also happened to arguably be AJ’s biggest mistake as Padres GM. Why Andrew gotta do them like that?

This was a fantastic video, well done. I'm no Stat Cast expert but it feels to me like Preller is building a repeat of those A Rod era Yankees teams - trying to stack the deck, not thinking about chemistry or long term vision, a win now or bust mentality. The Yankees squeaked out a WS in '09 but otherwise were perennial under achievers. Maybe its not a fair apples to apples comparison but from the outside it looks like that.

I was at a Padres game when Victor Caratini hit the walkoff hit in September. I was sitting like five rows behind the home dugout. I was waving my rally towel had my swag chain on and evrything. Heck even Fernando Tatis Jr tossed a baseball to me because he saw how supportive I was to the team the whole game that I would've caught if a fan didn't jump in front of my glove that bounced off his handed and rolled down to the lower seats. The throw was 100% perfect and in that moment that was basically the Padres season in the nutshell. Not to mention the vibe of the whole team felt different like something is going on they weren't really energetic as the once we're.

Cardinals fan here. That many injuries are difficult to overcome. The Cardinals basically lost their entire starting rotation (and closer) and only started coming on when we got a couple of arms. When you lose people late in the season and have little chance to replace them, it's very difficult. Maybe they could have planned a little better but injuries were the main cause of the collapse IMO.

Braves fan here, didn't know Turner, Grandal, Fried, and Ross all used to be Padres. But I'm VERY glad the Braves ended up getting Max Fried, I love the way he plays the game. It was cool to get Kemp for a couple years too, even though that 16-17 era wasn't exactly the greatest for us. But all that aside, I've always found the Pads to be an exciting and likeable team, and I think they'll get over the hump eventually, so good luck pads fans ;)
