I hear that. I imagine ripping across gravel roads and taking it on dirt trails. Hence why people convert older 911s and other Porsches, sometimes even for more slow rock crawly type stuff, but I'd love the higher speed too.
This is one of the coolest cars you've done, I love how practical it is. Seeing this inspired me to find the Dakar on a Porsche configure site and build my own. All in, it was $289,548. I got a lot of "no cost" options, the Dakar wheels, heated adaptive sport seats, I did pay $5,200 for the "Rally 1974" decal set, $550 for the heated sport steering wheel, and $4,540 for the Burmester high end surround sound system.
@@iustitiaepervenit That's unfortunate. Like alot of people who buy G-wagons and 4Runners. I was using practical in the sense that it could carry things for off roading and it has higher ground clearance than the Lamborghini.
19:08 is why Doug is the best and impossible to replace. He's a millionaire and he's reviewed hundreds of cars but he still giggles like a kid when he's driving an awesome car.
Turning a sports car into an off roader seems much cooler than turning trucks into street racers. I never got the racing wheels and tires on an SUV thing.
There's a thread on Rennlist which suggests that may be the case with the 992.2. I am hoping that is the case and Doug seemed to allude to that at the end of the video.
As much as I love the technology and capabilities of the 911, I couldn’t really ever see me wanting one for more than a test drive until now. I can totally see a use case for a car like this. It’s not as an off-roader, but as a road tripper. There are a ton of interesting places out there that have rough gravel road access that you would normally have to take a pickup or SUV to get to. With something like this you can visit those places and have a sports car on the highways in between. I already have several trips planned. Now I just need to win the lottery.
I agree 10000%. It's not about going off road, it's about going almost anywhere. Everyone I know they had porshes , lambos, hell even 80k pimped out F 150's are fo with tried about where they can drive it. Sports cars just do not do well on urban roads. Potholes, uneden roads, undeveloped roads, weather. This will go perfect. U sacrifice a little street grip and 0-60, but u can *actually* drive this in SNOW! I'm really surprised more cars aren't made like this. Subaru was really onto something, lol.
I may not ever get the chance to meet Doug in person, but I do so very deeply Respect and Sincerely Appreciate all that he so very lovingly does for his viewers through his love of automobiles and trucks and all. He shares his genuine passion with his viewers in a very real and thorough and down to earth way. Doug is very talented and skilled at all that he does.
@@FifyKaqiqiPain I like the Sterrato mechanically and I'm certainly glad it exists, but I honestly just hate the looks😅 Some cars look ugly in a cool way, but to me, the Sterrato looks ugly in a cheap/tacky way. I haven't seen one in person though, so maybe it'll grown on me🤷🏻♀
You’ll prolly be able to buy one for cheap in a few years. This is a shameless money grab that’s ripping people off. They’re charging a massive premium for a worse performing car to make people think it’ll be worth a fortune in the future. You can buy a stock 911 and turn it into a better off-roader for significantly less money.
this, to me, is the best looking 911 of this generation. it looks INCREDIBLE. i think it’s amazing they’ve made this, and the same with the Starrato. both great, fun designs and actually functional. i would choose this 911 if i could have any, and i live in the city centre lol
Kinda intrigued by this, kinda worried about this. Although people have been doing aftermarket conversions for decades, so I guess Stuttgart leaning into it isn't bad.
@Nomen Clature people have bitched that Porsche never does anything new for years, but when they try something new or even just tweak the formula... damn, do the flames get lit.
@Nomen Clature Hi im a 4 decade mechanic turned coach builder and now marine mech and worked on over 100 porsches. These new ones are absolute junk they are bottom of the reliability charts and calling this an offroader with its joke VAG road 4wd system is beyond the pale. This is nothing but a silly collectable aimed at the saudi market and would get stuck in the car park at Dakar. The fact you tried to insinuate everyone who doesnt like these junk made Porsches knows nothing about mechanics is truly proof of how much of a narc you are. Ive worked on everything from Rotary to Napier Deltic, yet you... a mechanically inexperienced Forza player has the cheek to claim you know the ins and outs of it hahahahaha. Your comment is as ridiculous as modern porsches reliability is. Offroader my hole!
I think if they made the rear wing look similar to that on the 959, it would be so much cooler but the wing that they decided on is not bad either, good job Porsche!
The frunk “bin” isn’t unique to the Dakar. It is an option for 911s. I have one for my GT3 and it works well for carrying things that may get dirty/wet (frozen foods, etc).
The practicality of this version is higher than that of the Turbo S, as there is a trunk, clearance for everyday driving, and the car will also rise in price over time, as the series is limited in number. Doug not accurately and logically put points on
You will definitely make good use of your tent, shovel, tire board and skid plate when you get stuck in the first puddle because of the low ground clearance.
Greetings from Ouagadougou from a long time follower ! I love cars and your reviews are on point, even making some of the most boring cars desirable! It seems you forgot to mention the step carved into the rear bumper, making accessing the roof-rack easily. But seriously awesome job!
I have just come from the Straight Pipes' video on the 911 Carrera T and said "Other than the GT3 this is my favorite 911" and I stand by that, but the 911 just has so many flavors, the Carrera T, the Turbo S, the GT3 and GT3 RS, and also thid 911 Dakar, I LOVE them all 🥰❤️
I suppose you might put it depends on what kind of millionaire you really are. If you just have $1 million. This is gonna take a big chunk of that. Although it’s pretty cool. And semi-practical; so maybe you would. You only live once.
Of course it's better executed than the Lamborghini Sterrato! The 911 Dakar is the ORIGINAL! Period! The Lamborghini is just a shitty rip off from the famed Porsche offroad philosophy of the 911 Dakar, which has strong roots to Porsches motorsport history, like the 959 Dakar versions. Compared to the 911 Dakar, the Sterrato is just for 100% a marketing bullshit vehicle without any daily driving purpose, because it's too fucking expensive. And at least the 911 Dakar doesn't cost half a million Dollars like the Sterrato...
this unreliable junk heap that got stuck in mud on carwow.. is the last daily id have with its bottom of the reliability charts build quality. Porsche are diabolically chocolate now
Neither original nor anything but painfully obvious all using a dead meme. Grow up. Stop annoying millions of normal people for the applause of a few hundred of your fellow morons.
they are a joke in the UK they break down constantly newer 911s and that one gets spanked offroad all it can do is a thin layer of mud and gravel thats it.
@@bigduphusaj162 I'm pretty sure it's meant for dirt roads, not mud or any real OFFroad. It's not about being the best of the best, it's about having a right tool for the job
My husband and I joined rally school together! Rallying is so much more fun than slow rock crawling! I recommend it even joining a school that teaches recreation and not competition training! I drive my husband's Raptor R in high speed desert trails like a boss now!
The lambo looks like someone modded the car after buying a normal one, this one looks solid. It actually does look like it was put together by Porsche from the factory.
Doug just an observation. I would like to see more on the street views of the car. If you can show use different angles from the street to see how the car looks in traffic I believe that would add to the video. Not only with this car of course but with every review.
@@alp.9672 - I know that he works alone but there might be a way. In any case, even with the car parked we oftentimes only get a very few shots from the outside, and never rolling or anything like that. Maybe it is time to step it up and try hiring somebody to help with the rolling shots.
This has got to be one of the coolest vehicles I've ever seen! My favorite 911's have always been the late 60's to mid 70's but this one is right up there...
It seems there is starting to be a following for "overland" Porsches. What people are doing with older Cayennes is so cool, its beyond words. I would love to have an overlander Cayenne.
its intended purpose? what being in a garage in saudi? 😂 this junk heap is not only biblically unreliable, it got stuck in mud on carwow and harry got it stuck on wet grass in his farm hahahaha. Ridiculous the junk you Americans praise. New porsches arw rock bottom of the reliability charts bellow Land Rover.
I'm seriously considering trying to source one of these to use in Northern Alberta Canada, in the winter. My 2020 911 is setup, as you;d expect on summer-only tires... but something about this Dakar, and studded winters equals quite an adventure come snow season. I wonder if this is even attainable in Canada?
Front bin has been a Porsche parts option for years. I had it in my first 991 as dealership ordered it with build. I assume its included on all Dakar builds.
It would be really cool if Subaru came out with a Wilderness trim for the BRZ. Give it a ~1" to 3" lift, black plastic body cladding, skid plates, a better approach angle, and all terrain tires, and you'd have an absolute winner.
Subaru needs to WRX the Crosstrek already. Now that they've pretty much given up on the WRX they might as well put that engine in the Crosstrek and kind-of revive the WRX hatch that people have been begging for.
People always want off roaders to be rock crawlers. Some of us just wanna have fun on dirt roads and trails. I still couldnt afford this, but itd do that well lol.
Hey Doug, great vid! Is this becoming the new thing now? Off road super cars? 2 of the best selling supercars now offer off road capable models. If the Huracan and the 911 have off road models, then there’s more than likely going to be an off road model offered on the Artura, Vantage, Roma/296/Portofino or whatever Ferrari’s equivalent is to the huracan since the F8 is gone).
Ferrari would never do this. They're too stuck up. They're only now coming out with an SUV and they even refuse to call it an SUV. I could see McLaren doing it. Idk about Aston Martin doing it either. Idk if they have the money to really be experimenting with that kind of thing.
I would say these two are the only ones. They’re limited production, and they’re under the same parent company. Maybe they’re trying to get it started, but I doubt it will become the next big thing. Would be cool though!!!
this is the perfect car to park alongside my bronco raptor in the garage. But since it's too expensive, i'd rather buying an used 997 4s manual and start my own dakar project! Maybe i'm lucky enough to find one with carbon bucket seats and powerkit
Good luck getting it. I've called everywhere and it's list-based and has been snapped up by the dealerships themselves. I expect a very, very heavy markup like most vehicles.
Partially incorrect. 19 degrees is the maximum for the 911 dakar, the number porsche used for the suvs is different: for the macan they used steel springs (16.5°, 19° with air suspensions), for the cayenne they used the normal ground clearance setup. The cayenne got a better ramp angle than the 911 dakar when air suspensions are in their highest setting (20.5°)
what history? getting stuck in mud by carwow or stuck on wet grass on Harrys farm? or the recent porsche history of them making cars so badly now that theyve managed to remove Land Rover from the bottom spot of the reliability charts? 😂 absolute junk!
Man, I see so many people lamenting about grey cars. Sometimes, sure, but then you get colors like this. It's friggin' gorgeous. The matte really works well. A further selling point for an already desirable car. Kinda in love with it.
It looks like Porsche forgot to polish it before it left the factory. I never understood not-shiny paint, it makes an expensive car look like an old spray-painted Civic bought off Craigslist for $500 and a bag of weed.
Doug was in such a hurry to review the Dakar that he didn't shave is beard properly 😂😂 I really enjoy watching him review cars. Nobody reviews the cars in such a details as Doug does.
don't they sell aftermarket kits for improving ground clearance on the STi? I'd off-road pretty much everything, even my wife 2018 audi A5 coupe manual (they can fit audi a4 allroad suspensions indeed).
That little switch shifter would be great for a daily commuter car. Mine has all those other modes I have no use for anyway. All I really need is drive, park, and reverse.
I hope the American car manufacturers follow suit. I’d love to see a rally C8, rally Mustang, rally Challenger HELLCAT. If the OEMs don’t do it I hope the popular tuners will.
This to me is the coolest thing that car industry can offer in terms of fun at the moment in time. Lifted 911 IS ABSOLUTELY insane but I want it so fucking bad. Take it to the mountains, take it on a highway, take it in a city atmosphere with shitty roads and just zoom through everything. Im in love
