Happy Friday guys! Big thanks to Keeps for sponsoring this video! Be sure to visit www.keeps.com/redline to get a special offer. We've been seeing more of the newest generation MDX out on the roads and its pretty easy to see why! This Type S version may not have the performance to keep pace the highest performance options from BMW M, Mercedes-AMG, or Audi RS, but it is a very enticing alternative to the more pricey German rivals with their boosted 6-cylinder engines.
@oldkid6 I agree. But you gotta pay to play. Just go easy on the turbo (there are several do's and dont's) and you should get 200k from the engine. Might have to have the turbo rebuilt though
@@Bloodmoney92. No BMW X5 sold has the ride quality of the MDX Type S. To get a sound system as good as the MDX you need to get the M60i which is over 100k similarly equipped. The X5 M60i does not have a third row. The X5's massage seats suck, the ventilated seats barely blow any air. X5 will most likely be more expensive to repair. X5 will be MUCH faster (sub-4 0-60) and has much better driver assistance tech...for most people that is not worth $30k more.
Admittedly, I'm a loyal to the Acura brand but was looking for every reason NOT to get this car...Initially, was hesitant to pay that much for an MDX, albeit a Type-S, but after haggling down the price to $71k and change - pulled the trigger and got the 2024 Type-S Advanced MDX. Wish it had more HP and hit 60mph a second or two faster BUT...4 months in and it's still a joy, just like the first day bringing this baby home, to drive! It looks sleek, and has a presence on the road for sure. Unlike your Volvos, BMWs, Mercedes and Genesis that you see everywhere on the road - take pride in being the only Type-S owner on the block/town. Hands down, the best rendition of the MDX to date. The interior is a bit cozy for sure but the when you get behind the wheel and take it for a spin - it doesn't feel like you're driving an SUV or minivan. It feels like a sporty sedan that hugs the road and gives you the confidence when entering a corner at high speeds. My previous car was a 2012 Acura MDX Advanced - and over the course of 10+ years - have never had any mechanical issues, has always carried anything I've needed to bring home - long story short: It's taken care of me without a doubt and hoping the 2024 will do the same for years to come!.
@@gosman949 would be tedious to clean the screen so frequently. I also clean my iPhone like once a week because if you don't clean it, it will harbor a lot of bacteria. Also, Acura's True Touchpad is actually easy to get used to, I used it in the RDX when test driving. One thing I'll say is annoying is the excessive use of gloss black in that interior, hope they get rid of it in the new refresh.
Hello everyone My wife and I love our Type S . We have been using the Acura Touchpad from 2016 and do not have any issues with it . We also have a touchscreen as well and our favorite is the Acura Touchpad. It does take time to get use to. The bottom line is no matter which one you must touch something. 0 to 60 try only give it about 3/4 throttle off the line then to the floor . It seems that it only needs one or two feet of roll out to make a difference. Listen to the 0 to 60 run at 35 minute mark when the engine sounds as it just lays down about 3 to 5 tenths of a second off the line . If you really want to wake up that car give it about 300 more rpm in the toque converter. Your reviews are always well done. Thank you Markar
My wife went straight from a Lexus RX350 with touchscreen to a 2023 MDX S-Type and absolutely hated the wheels and touchpad controls. The car drove great except all the wind noise we had from a bad sunroof gasket, that took 4 months replace.
I ALWAYS look forward to you reviewing Acura products and I think it’s because I’ve been watching your RU-vid videos for so many years now that the first Redline Review video I saw you reviewed was the 2013 Acura ILX 😊 so thank you for always doing a great job at reviewing Acura products 🔥
Great review as always. Love the styling of the Acura brand and this does not disappoint. It's a bit out of my price range, but I am seriously considering the refreshed TLX type S. Can't wait to see a review on that soon!
Absolutely love my Type-S. Such a great SUV for the money. If you don’t believe me, go watch Savageese’s long term review on it also. Great video Sofyan.
@@layne4376 he said it was one of the best riding cars under 120k…and does everything that it needs to do perfectly…the only thing of improvement needed was the engine and gas mileage.
@@layne4376 too much money? What around this price point gives you an air suspension…massaging seats…and all the tech features…a gle350 with a wimpy 4 cylinder is around this cost…as well as a q7 with the 4 cylinder. The x5 is the only one around this price point decently equipped with a proper inline 6. If I were to get another vehicle, I’d go X7 40i. The air suspension makes me not regret buying this over an X7…which was around 103k the way I built it. If I could think of things to improve this MDX, it would 100% be adding some more horses, add a mild hybrid, and a bigger fuel tank.
@@layne4376should I remind you that Korean’s GV80 with 375 HP loses to 355 MDX?😂 MDX is already much cheaper than the Germans, and you want it to be even cheaper?😂some people like you just can’t be satisfied.
Why all those car influencers don’t understand, I hear that all the time, the reason they put rear wipers on the lower part of the glass instead of upper is , real estate, you see better after wiper moves from lower part than upper , its not always about look
I don’t understand the hate Acura receives. It has always & will always be my favorite brand. I have a Integra Type S in Liquid Carbon with the red. Such a good car from a great brand
Many of these haters are German car brand enthusiasts…who are bothered by the fact that Acura and Lexus are far more reliable and exude a higher resale value. Also, Mdx is the number 1 selling 3 row luxury suv, so there must be a lot of love.
For its price, its performance isn’t that great. Plus many of them have issues. I also see a lot of these traded into BMW and Audi. My friend had one and got bored of it fast. He traded it for an Audi SQ7, which is a total beast. Huge night and day performance.
@@ryanb8736why does one need that much performance on their mall crawler? They point of them is to be reliable and start up every time without unreasonable amounts of maintenance
@@ryanb8736I see so many Audis and BMWs get traded in too Audis lose value so fast it’s ridiculous I can get a used 2019 Audi S4 for $27k brand new it was over $60k
@@tingokumanYou’re lying. Stop capping. The Type S comes with dynamic air suspension with sport and lift mode. The Aspec doesn’t. It does NOT feel the same.
@@waled121He's probably talking about the power. I drove the type s three times and honestly the power really couldn't tell much of a difference. Suspension and brake pedal were the noticeable improvements. It definitely needs more power or better tune.
I purchased this same vehicle with black interior and silver color a few months ago and I absolutely love it. If I were to change anything it would be more HP even though it does get on it and has plenty of power and a larger screen. The only thing I don't love is its a huge gas guzzler, My 2020 ram 2500 4x4 diesel (huge truck)gets better gas milage then my MDX.
I saw one a few weeks ago. They did a great job from the exterior and interior design perspective. Sporty yet elegant. However.... mid 70's is kind of dear for 5.5 secs. Im'm with you, an additional 100HP from a hybrid drivetarin would make it a much more attractive proposition. The fact is Honda's are getting pretty dear. Our CRV hybrid touring was 45k when all was said and done, worth it, but no longer a "bargain".
It’s a great looking suv. My cousin bought this trim around the holidays and bought it by for me to check it out. Actually has more features included than my Mercedes GLE 63s. It is a very strong competitor to the higher end manufacturers.
Stop advocating for bigger screens! Please for the love of all that is good I as a 24 year old want smaller screens 🙏🏽. Honestly this is the perfect modern interior and exterior, nothing too out of place everything fits and looks like it belongs there.
I thought the same thing but bought an MDX anyway. After a couple weeks the touchpad becomes no more of a hassle than using a mouse on a PC. You aren’t dragging a cursor around though: the pad itself is like a mirrored touchscreen, if that makes sense.
@@haze1123 Yes and I’m saying I prefer the touchpad to leaning over and smudging a screen. I don’t even have to lift my hand from the rest. Go read the Acura subreddit and you’ll find similar sentiment. But you do you - just sharing my experience!
You are right. But the Acura subreddit is a bit of a mixed bag. Most people agree it's good (once you get used to it) when you're using Acura's system. But with Android Auto and CarPlay, it's a straight mousepad experience and it's somewhat clunky. So I think it depends a lot on whether you enjoy those systems.
My man.. you did cover so many things, including the rear no-air, but that package you had with its hefty premium comes with easily one of the best audio systems available PERIOD. 25 speakers, 3D ELS signature. 1000w of power .. just saying. You mentioned quiet cabin and soundproofing, and exhaust note twice, but .. wow, you were also sitting in a concert hall designed by a master… barely mentioned. But to your credit, well done review, 4.9 stars (out of 5)
Almost 80 grand is crazy. This is the best mdx ever, just wish honda went further on the type s model. I guess they didn't want to go crazy on the turbo boost, but I think this should be pushing closer to 400 hp. I love the look and interior minus the infotainment. While not the same thing, The Genesis GV80 is the competitor that comes to mind. I think mostly got it right, but was expecting just a little more excitement for the type s
It’s not that uncommon. The Lexus TX is over $80k for the plug in hybrid. This is actually a great deal. Well under $80k for the top of the line. Pretty rare in this segment that’s for sure.
@@gerry9306 Plus the CX-90 is a RWD platform, removed all gloss black from the interior and gives your 3rd row passengers room for their bodies and air vents lol. The air suspension, massage seats and other features are nice but not $20k nice.
Test drove the Cx90 before buying my MDX Type-S…sure, it was a RWD platform…but the MDX handled better…not to mention the air suspension with the MDX…no comparison with ride, and tests have been getting 0-60 around 6.1-6.6 for that cx90 which is not impressive for the HP and torque rating. The MDX has massage seats..air suspension, els studio 25 speaker sound(pretty much best in industry along with Volvo’s), high quality leather, passenger memory seats, even more leather touch points, and the price justifies it..
@@TheBreakfastLover yeah…even so…it’s not responsive, many journalists have stated that it’s not responsive…and the transmission has a significant delay.
Beautiful interior, love the black wood trim on the door panels, it has a nice ass drop and a really good exhaust sound. Greatly and beautifully executed dash and central console as always.
@@bradleyscarreviews I don’t think I will get used to it, on the one hand, it is one to one true touch pad, on the other hand when using Apple CarPlay, it’s completely different, also I think you will struggle when typing the address.
I have a 23 mdx type-s, and i dont miss touch screen at all (mostly). wouldn't be a reason i didnt buy one... my biggest complaint would be it needs 75-100 extra HP, and the excessive piano black is dated.
I cannot buy another vehicle until my wife’s 2022 RX350 is paid off in January of 2026. I hope to god the MDX Type S is still available with this engine!
I have an MDX Type-S, and the exhaust sound is not aggressive. However, the Acura Integra Type-S has an aggressive sound and costs much less. Considering the amount of money the MDX Type-S costs, the suspensions should lower by an inch more.
An amazing performance SUV in this particular trim level. The only downside is Acura's infotainment system which is odd considering its platform mate Honda Pilot has a much more usable infotainment system.
I love the MDX Type S, however extremely disappointed when it comes to the exhaust! They could’ve made it sound like the TLX Type S, with some growl, and blurples.
@@tmyere. type s is still just a family car with a bit more power, this is not sports car or super car. You are probably the only one who complains about exhaust sound on a MDX type S, most people complains about touch pad, some complains no hybrid on MDX, some complains about piano black trim. But none complains about exhaust sound besides you. Please be considerate about your neighbors. Nobody wants to hear your car’s loud exhaust sound.
How would this stack up against the ford explorer st twin turbo the explorer with a good tune Keeps pace with 392s which is crazy for a family suv I bet if this had 120 more hp it probably would too
@@Slim1986 my bad I meant MDX but we’re talking about MDX and type S and performance and luxury and you’re talking about a giant behemoth of a Family road Tripping vehicle just saying…the two don’t make sense to cross shop whatsoever
I feel like this is exactly the vehicle Mazda went after with their CX-90. Save $10k+ with a much nicer interior, equal reliability & performance and better fuel economy. The ELS sound system is outrageously awesome however.
I purchased a 2018 Forester XT touring white w/brown leather in 2020 with only 20k becuase of your positive review :) thank you. Still love the car and with the cobb otf 93 tune it's a wonderful daily dad-mobile. How would you stack it against the MDX type S ? Cvt trans vs more weight... I don't see many options for a trade up these days, nothing significantly faster without blowing the budget. Any advice?
I own an acura mdx. I really like the touchpad and feel that it has a better user experience. There is a slight learning curve but you will feel the positive impact when you use it while driving. They could probably do touchscreen and touch pad but I am sure they have weighed in those options as well.
When I saw the 0-60, governed top speed, and then the price, I stopped the video. 111? When I hit 5th in my tuned Civic Si, I'll enjoy the view of this Acura's headlights shrinking.... Hopefully, there will be a tuner available for this because 111 is ridiculously slow for the price.
It's such a pretty and sporty looking SUV!! It has great tech and options for the money! I don't like that it doesn't have a touch screen and that it requires premium gas, but otherwise I love it!!
I've driven the MDX A-Spec and it was very comfortable and quick even with the smaller engine. Acura is that great sweet spot in luxury/performance in my opinion. It's got a great reputation and the Type-S is such a great sport trim overall.
Technically, the turbo 3.0 is the "smaller engine" and the 3.5 has more displacement, but I agree. Honestly, even if they gave the base 3.5 lighter wheels and 20 more HP/torque, that would make the 3.5 variants much more appealing. At least in driving experience. Acura/Honda wheels are pretty heavy.
Where is the ventilated 2nd row seats?!?! Also needs more power on TypeS and base motors. True 2nd row captain chairs, with ventilation and heat, would be better for me. Car is gorgeous and drives amazing for the size. Definitely my favorite CUV in the class. Perfect size too!
I really like my 2023 Type S MDX Advance (specked out the same way just like in this vid). So far, I love it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. I do wish the navigation unit was touchscreen like in the 2025 models but the touchpad isn’t that bad. The wireless charger sucks doesn’t charge my android phone most of the time you have to position it a certain way for it to start to charge. Massage seats are awesome, Space is great and comfortable the features this car has is all you need in real world use. Power is ample enough for this type of SUV its fast for my standards, handling is excellent a great all around vehicle for my family of four. Oh yeah this car is thirsty for gas i get like 15MPG LOL but that’s like driving it a little aggressively i can probably get better gas mileage if i baby the accelerator pedal. Overall I think it was worth the money for what you get I’ve had this SUV for over a year i’m currently at 12k miles in so far no problems or weird sounds Just don’t expect it to be faster than a European SUV in a straight line or around a track you just have to lower your standards a little in the performance department LOL.
76k before taxes and dealer fees is insane for an Acura MDX. There are alot of other cars you can get for that including the neew Lexus GX. However, this car will have a much longer life span than its competition (excluding Lexus).
@@naveenthemachine This car referencing specifically the Acura it's specialty is aggressive sport handling That's what it's built for. The GX it's specialty is durability and being able to go off-road. They have two distinct and different purposes. It's just a matter of which one you put it personal premium on. Also you can get into the GX for a lot less and both of these cars are probably last you a really long time unlike the majority of the field that they compete in
I am a Honda and Acura fan for two decades. I had a 2004 Honda Civic for 14 years. Then bought a 2014 Honda Accord Sport. After that a 2019 Acura RDX A-Spec. I still have the Honda and Acura each has 64K and 32K miles respectively. The Acura had so much problems with infotainment, build quality, dozen of TSBs. The last draw was my rear glass blew up due to defect but Acura refused to recall it. Repair is only cover for warranty work. My car has 32K miles but out of 5 year warranty. Now I am a proud owner of a 2023 Lexus GX 460 Luxury with a Sport Design Package. I could have purchase the MDX Type-S with $78K I spent on the Lexus. No more Acura for me. So sad!
If the internet is true, the mid cycle refresh is due in 2024 as the 2025 model. Biggest change will be in the drivetrain because it will replace the engine with the non-vtec V6 from the current Honda Pilot (Type-S does not change).
@@CK-1000 Relax Milburn Pennybags. A car loan is not a car loan anymore, it’s a mortgage. Cars are way too expensive now. I got my car serviced and the dealership had a new Toyota Sequoia for $83,000! But $83,000 for you is like purchasing Baltic Avenue. Enjoy the free parking.
Great review, thank you! Everyone in my family is tall so that 2nd and 3rd row is a deal breaker for us. Oh, but when I see them on the road, they always catch my eye. Thanks again.
1st and 2nd row are fine for tall people. I’m 6 feet. 3rd row would be survivable if they made the rear seat recline and put air vents back there. There more than enough room for people several inches over 6 feet tall.
I have a 2022 MDX Type-S Ultra (that's the Canadian version of the Advanced) and I love it. My only disappointment with this 2024 is that it's exactly the same as my model from two years ago, no further enhancements or improvements to it. I'm hoping the 2025 models sees some further enhancements.
Thank you very much for sharing your very thorough and helpful feedback 👍🏽 Now it’s time to go purchase one at my local dealership and enjoy it with the family 😊
Exact same engine that I have in my Ridgeline with turbos attached. I get 24 MPG average even when I'm loaded up with my weekend gear. That's really terrible MPG for this SUV.
This car is so beautiful in and out acura are really taking the game to the next level and it drives better than lexus for long time I don't know if you notice that
I purchased this vehicle, and it is the 5th Acura I have owned. I have also owned BMW X5. This is the best vehicle I have personally have ever owned/driven. I opted for the white diamond pearl with the orchid interior. It is gah-or-geous. And I have only seen one other on the road so far, which caused us each to wave to each other. I don't give a crap that it can only go 111 mph. Why would you ever need to go that fast? Maybe to escape a tornado or the cops. And who would drive that fast on a daily basis. I love the track pad. The key is to glide your finger over the pad slowly and lightly tap when you want to select, without lifting your finger off the pad. Besides, touch screens are more dangerous in my opinion and require more focus/interaction with the screen and more distracting. The steering wheel is so comfortable, and the massaging seats and seat warmers help on days when I have lower back pain. I know the mpg is not the best, but I am getting 18 around town, 21 highway. I rarely drive more than 40 or 50 miles in a day. The cabin talk feature is like sound amplification for conversations and is great when I am driving my 88 and 89 year old parents around. We can all talk and hear each other. Most beautiful, luxurious car with a multitude of features. I am still learning all of them.
I totally agree on the exhaust side its kinda quite as he mentioned. Though i dont know if aftermarket JDM company would make bolt on upgrades like charge pipes, intercooler, and exhaust. Though factory should be louder.
BTW, just checked the IIHS small overlap rating.... Acceptable. Which in effect means not so good, when all the competitors are acing the test. The overall was good. A lot of vehicles are getting worse scores due to rear seat belt "submarining".
All the competitors are ace-ing the test? The Q7/Q8, Cayenne, and X5/X7 have all not had the updated front overlap testing. The GLE did better but is AT LEAST $30k more similarly equipped. The Volvo does worse in side impact. Also important to note, the MDX had Good in that test in all of the dummy measurements, it just lost points for how the dummy looked in high speed video. Of course not ideal, but still one of the best in the class. MDX and the Tesla Model Y are the only cars under $100k that have "Good" in EVERY impact measure for IIHS tests.
i have a 20 MDX with tech package. love the car. Wish it had heated steering wheel. The idle start stop is major drawback. Yes, i know you can manually turn it off, and its off in sport mode, but still its a major pain. I see it's still on the newly remodeled type S. I'll be searching for a vehicle that does not use this feature.
Wrong. At least Acura tries to differentiate themselves from Honda. For example no Honda offers a turbo v6. No Honda on sale now offers a double wishbone front suspension. Those make a huge difference when driving an MDX vs pilot
@@naveenthemachine yeah yeah yeah, ok but what about interior hmm? It looks same to honda bro, materials? I remember I had a legend with tan interior the inside looked like a mercedes! E class! Idk what they doing now
@@naveenthemachine yeah i dont think lexus, regardless acura just doesnt have that brand prestige and I think its for a reason. In movies its always the bosses that are stepping out of mercedes or bmw. Never acura😂

Yikes…just bought a 2024 Type S advance, loving the quietness, and smoothness with the air suspension, and the dual personality in sport+ with the power. Is that Genesis really better?
Great review and car! But I wish Acura produce the same or improved Hybrid trim for MDX Type S that it had on RLX, so it becomes more efficient and maybe even faster. In this case I 100% buy one.
13:14 One of the missing buttons on the left side of the steering wheel is Heated Wiper toggle, which is available in the Canadian version. But there's still another empty button, I've no idea what it would be 😅 maybe headlight washer (that was available in the previous gen)
$76,000.00 !!! I'm soo poor, but even if I made $250K a year, I would not pay $80K for a new car, $40K for a new car and $36K on really nice vacation !!!!
@@bigpapi88 My point remains if you're going to keep that car past the warranty it's going to cost you an arm and a leg to maintain when compared to the Acura MDX to other cars even a Supra or X5. My point stands
I guess if you want to spend $105k and get the X5 that can actually compete on features...otherwise you are spending $80k to get a much worse audio system, worse ride quality, no massage seats, no third row, and more expensive repair costs.
The only thing I don't like is the rear tail lights. I recently convinced myself that I like more about the mdx over the grand highlander. Although the Grand Highlander looks longer and higher off the ground. Which is more reliable 🤔
These taillights are one of the best things about this vehicle. Can't please everyone. SUVs are generally pretty boring to drive in general and the MDX actually drives like a bigger sedan. If you wanna be nitpicky and bored to death, buy the Highlander.
Best Acura they make. I have no doubt this can do 160 w no governor. 111 top speed is absurd. It should at least be 120. A Toyota Camry can hit 136 mph W the limiter🫠
My wife sold her 2023 MDX S-Type in less than a years time. The driving experience was extremely good but the cons were: A bad sunroof seal that took over 4 months to fix and no touchscreen anywhere. You're forced to use wheels, knobs, and a touchpad to navigate the infotainment system. After driving a Lexus RX350 she absolutely hated that she couldn't just touch the screen to select what she wanted. Also the navigation voice commands were useless. It couldn't even find an Acura dealer. My Ford F150 understands everything I ask it to find. The Acura doesn't even understand finding it's own dealer. Mechanically, Acura is solid but they need to work on the electronics.
The wireless phone charging is completely useless. In fact, a second after you said it charges your phone well the charger proceeded to NOT charge your phone. The touchpad is nonsensical as it’s inconstant between the native menu and CarPlay. They should move it up a few inches and make it a touch screen. Otherwise, amazing car.
Not good enough! $75K with a 5.5 sec 0-60 isn't going to cut it. I'll consider it if acura can add a twin turbo V8 or some sort of electric assist to boost these HP& torque numbers by 100+ each and keep the price about the same. Until then, not interested. Also, 17-21MPG??? They are nuts
It's main competitor is the Lexus RX500h FSP, and the Acura is quicker, better sounding (turbo V6 instead of a 4-cylinder) and more luxurious (real massaging seats).
Thanks for show the open car so we can see the windows go all the way down and the sunroof range of open. Not that svelte, but more usable space. Terrible fuel economy yet not that fast. The door been is not lined, so that will be rattle city. Don't really like piped in engine noise, but as long as you can turn it off, I have no issues with it.
