They can hate all they want because their European cars are unreliable and loses their value 2 or 3 quickly. And also, try getting maintenance done on them 😅 Getting them fixed cost a small fortune and they will break down a lot. Their cars will spend more time in the shop than driving.
Probably because in general, when a Japanese manufacture makes a "fast" version of their car, it's usually slower than the "middle" version of a German car.
People don’t like great quality that’s why they hate Acura. Japanese brands hands down. German brands hype no substance. They are always in the shop. Japanese all day!
@@G82Watts the 2024 MDX is the same as the 2022MY which was on the market since mid 2021 :) BMW fangirls don't know how to justify the fact that the X5 was slower than the MDX. That's embarrassing.
MDX all day long. Plenty quick, best value, least expensive to maintain, best AWD system, holds the most people and cargo, and is the best looking of the bunch (IMO).
best awd system? ahahahh the bmw is the best in everything, superior engines, superior built quality and way better driving than any other brand not only audi and acura
@@denikasmi1850 I’m not arguing that BMW isn’t great at some things. Engines and build quality, yes. Ride and steering? Hardly. The Acura is by far the jack of all trades here.
@@icculus to me bmw is the best. I live in italy and we rarely see other car brands like acura.. but to each it's own... I'm just saying that the bmw engines are the most performant and the quality of the ride they have it's unmatched. And i own a bmw that's why i talk. My friends have audis and mercedes and everytime they get into my car they say to me that they can notice the difference... And when i let them drive they was so astonished on the way the car responds when you press the accelerator and how much confidence it aspires and how much difference there is with their cars on the sense of the quality of the ride
I just wish Acura used a stronger transmission. The 10 speed is awful. Too many issues and its max torque is 350. BMW is double . Massive difference. Google Acura and Honda 10 speed failures. You will see. Honda was sued over Hondas with 10 speed in minivans. Same transmission.
Remember it just competed with the basic models. Acuras performance was best by base models. You have mid performance X5M60 and SQ8. Those are in another league. This make you laugh hard. Then insanity is X5M and RSQ8. You will be left with impressions that you will never forget. Pure insanity! I wish Acura could compete.
I just wish they would put a better transmissions in it. Many issues with them. Plus there is no way to make over 400hp. Plus it also won’t rev past 6k. B58 drivetrain is on another level. Many levels above it. This is why many MDX owners upgrade to BMW.
@@ryanb8736 Here comes the Disadvantages of the B58B30 engine Most of the complaints on the specialized forums are related to a decrease in the coolant level. The exact cause is unknown, but sometimes replacing the expansion tank cap helps. It’s a pretty hot engine and blows head gaskets regularly. Usually, a strong smell of burnt oil appears immediately, and often smoke. Like most gasoline direct injection engines, B58 engines often suffer from floating engine speeds due to carbon deposits on the intake valves. Rarer problems here are related to the Vanos phase shifters, the canister valve and the oil filter, which falls apart when replaced, and it is not so easy to get it. Sorry. Learn the REAL FACTS.
@@user-yh7be9fk6mnone of that prevents the b58 from being the better overall engine which it still is. Proper maintenance prevents most of those issues.
@@ralph02136 Well, first and second problem can't be prevented by proper and regular maintenance. And if you are kind of fangirl of BMW who always barks "BMW is the only best car! Others are crap!", I'm gonna spend no more time on you.
@@user-yh7be9fk6m once again most of the issues can be dealt with proper maintenance aka understanding how it works and taking care of it on time. The rest of what you babbled about doesn't change it from being the best overall motor in this scenario, pretty useless rant😂
@@stefanomarcellino6701 I don´t say it´s perfect or amazing or very good, I say it´s good for a Japanese engine because we know reliability is more important then performance for them.
@@stefanomarcellino6701I guess, but even then, I wouldn’t call a B58 an economic engine by any means as they use it in m340i and Z4, and is the mid range between their economic 4 cylinder (B48) used in their 30i cars
This is what I’m seeing after all these MDX videos! Highly impressed with this thing! I’ve owned the X5, and I thought it’d smoke the MDX. But I also had a 2019 Odyssey Elite, and the 10 Speed on the interstate made that van RUN away from traffic once cooking. Heck, that van did 0-60 in 6.0 seconds flat. Highly impressed.
When the MDX Type S engine and Transmission engineered fresh out of Japan, you know its on point. Transmission plays a great role when the HP torque ratio is not more than 30 HP difference.
@@akuragang1990its funny seeing comments like these becuase it proves u have never owned a bmw thats 2020 or newer. Their cars are extremely reliable now.
Reliable, yes. But, expensive as hell to maintain and for no reason outside of corporate greed! That was enough for me to ditch the BMW I had on order for the Type S.
@@josemondragon7695I traded my accord coupe in for a 23 TLX-S in all black with the body kit, black badges, and black y-spokes. It's the most odious- looking vehicle I've ever owned. I bought the test pipe and I'm going to do a slightly louder exhaust soon.
It’s not a Vtec. It also only revs to 6k rpm max, so there is no top end. So not sure where you are getting your info from. This is not a J35. It’s a J30.
Yeah the b58 equipped X5s walks that Mdx easily on the roll and launches like crazy creating a gap instantly and then walks away from it. Drove my friend mad lol
MDX is performance. BMW and Audi are just their base models. They have two models above these. SQ8 will make you laugh and giggle. It sounds like a muscle car. It’s a detuned Urus. Still 500hp. Then you have RSQ8 with 650hp. That will make you wake up at 3am and drive with no reason except for pure enjoyment.
No it’s not. Also this is an old X5 with 335 hp. New 2024 makes 390 now. MDX makes 270 at wheels on dyno. X5 makes over 350 on dyno. Massive difference now. So 2024 MDX high performance Type S vs an actual 2024 X5 only base model, the X5 is a lot faster. Keep in mind this is Acuras top performance model. This is BMw’s base. BMW has the X5M60 and the X5M. Both of those are in another league. X5 base is easily tunable to 500hp plus with ease. Acura is capped out at 380 with tune. Acuras isssue is bottlenecked in the small head ports. Heads will need to be changed to gain more power. ECU is locked to 6k rpm max. Acura is a great driving vehicle. Don’t expect to tune it for more power. Plus its transmission is weak. Lots of issues.
Nah, I think you're the one who thinks that Honda Acura quality is going downwards but in reality, Honda Acura is still tops. Maybe instead of looking at fake JD 2 year initial quality charts, the best way to figure this out is by listening to warranty companies and companies that actually have millions of repair invoices to go off of? 🤡🤡🤡
9:54 the best way to make the MDX faster for drag racing is to put the car in S mode, hit the paddle down for M1, then let the computer shift at redline for every gear. I have a 2023 tlx type s n trust me people do not want that smoke in the wild. All the keyboard warriors who talk smack about Acura and the Type S end up looking at how nice my tail lights are very quickly.
@@larryzeldin7561 no way in hell, maybe that type s was stock but mine ain’t n there’s absolutely no way a 2.0 T is walking me whatsoever 😂 I’ve absolutely dog walked m340i’s so maybe you should own the car do some mods and you’d know…
Tune won’t get you much power. They chose small port heads to get instant power at low rpm for instant gratification for best daily. Huge problem is tuning. You need to change the heads to large port and change manifold and turbo. About 20k job. Then the big problem is TCU is locked down and won’t rev past 6k rpm. You also can’t drive in manual as it will upshift at 6k. Plus its transmission is plagued with issues. Also its max torque is 340 pounds. I researched it all. I wanted one, but decided to go a different route now. Great vehicles if you leave them stock. Superb daily car and SUV’s. Too much money if you want true performance though.
Great review and car! But I wish Acura produce the same or improved Hybrid trim for MDX Type S that it had on RLX, so it becomes more efficient and maybe even faster. In this case I 100% buy one.
Better than the ACURA, the new ACURA only!!!!!! Type S magnificent, gorgeous. Tiger Eye, White Pearl😍😍😍😍. Owner of MDX 2 restyle 2011. Best in the world. I love my car. My blondie
All these comments are funny about people picking the a brand new mdx over brand bmw x5 because bmw is unreliable. One even said he ditched his new X5 for a mdx because the maintenance was to high well guess what little kids BMWs come with a bumper to bumper warranty for 4 years/50k miles and bmw ultimate care maintenance for 3 years/36k miles. Bunch of teenagers talking on the internet that ride a scooter. Truth is BMW is the better car, sales numbers speaks for itself. This is coming from an ex bmw fanboy that owned 9 different bmw’s… I used to buy used ones and then started leasing them but now I hate anything bmw starting from 2010ish onwards,I’m an older man now and I drive a Lexus now as my daily and got a S550 mustang GT as my weekend.
Love our MDX. Bought ours in 2022 and loved not seeing any on the road for a while was cool to be exclusive for a bit 🤣 but I still don’t see much around it’s the perfect mid size!!
Let’s understand this the Acura type S is the BEST ACURA CAN OFFER however this BMW is a base model BMW has 2 more powerful models M60 and X5M. The same apply for the Audi it’s a base model with 2 more powerful models like SQ8 RSQ8
I’m very impressed with the MDX, and Acura’s lineup in general. This makes me question the TLX now, it’s not a slow car by any means just too heavy. Also, as a BMW owner, they definitely underrate their power figures by a lot. This was a great video!! Keep it up!
The Audi Q8 sounds lame prolly due to the soft limiter. Great fun these races of your Sam. Keeping us entertained during the winter....even if some of us are no where near snow.
WoW...Acura did well. BMW - It's just something else. Audi Q8 - Two things, lazy gear box and it's on the list of the 6000lbs cars. Check the tax credit and you'll see.
I didn’t expect the MDX would be that close to the BMW. Both suv are very nice cars but to be a smart buyer, and the car that last longer and cost less than BMW, I w would have to spend my money on the MDX
Why wouldn’t you take an Audi or BMW from Germany? Or even a CX90 Turbo S despite it being Japanese?😂 I like the Acura but just curious.. I’d rather the Germans
I like the MDX more than the other two. I wonder how the S8 would have performed tho. I plan on getting the MDX type S refresh for 2025 this summer. So excited.
damn never mind last comment lol BMW is damn beast I wonder if the driver of MDX knew what they were doing. overall thanks to participants for finally making this video
Curious how the Stelvio Q4 would do against the MDX, they have similar 0-60 times. Stelvio Q4 has 280hp but weighs 700lbs less, so regardless of the Acura's extra horsepower, it could be an even match. Thoughts?
@@stevenfarley4738 I should have worded that differently. For 2024 the 375hp is close to the actual power it makes, as they added a mild hybrid system which not only boosted the power but also aids in fuel efficiency. BMW always underrates their hp figures, so this new one is probably making 420hp
Acura needs to further engineer the J30AC to become a monster. They need to make it a goal to make this engine the “transverse equivalent of the B58” meaning make big power and impressive efficiency. Hopefully add a mild hybrid or actual hybrid assist like that MDX hybrid they had years back.
@@ZACH_95_ it is a great system with a silky smooth engine but it has downfalls vs competition. Mainly having VCM which is destructive to the engine long term and being behind in fuel economy and power vs competition from bmw. Honda used to be kings of efficiency and power considering engine size. I would be critical on them to push them to engineer to their capabilities.
The apparent lack of sound insulation in the MDX is glaring. Was the Acura really that much louder inside, or was the mic set up different in the MDX than in the Audi and the BMW? I'm impressed by the MDX in all other ways, but if the interior noise is that bad, it's a deal breaker.
Hi Sam. This was a good drag and roll race between these three SUVs. Overall, the Acura MDX Type S performed well. Even though it has more horsepower and torque than the BMW X5, the X5 had the advantage due to the fact that the pound feet of torque for it gets achieved at lower RPMs. The 330 pound feet of torque gets achieved quickly at just 1,500 RPMs. That's the difference right there. As for the Audi Q8 S Line, from my view the exhaust sounded better for it than the other two vehicles. Unfortunately, that's where the fun stops for it though. In a upcoming drag & roll race video it would be nice to see the Jeep Grand Cherokee L with the 5.7 liter V8 engine go up against these three vehicles from this video. Also, to go up against the Genesis GV80 and Ford Explorer ST. The performance numbers for the Jeep Grand Cherokee L with the V8 engine produces 357 horsepower and 390 pound feet of torque. Nice competitive numbers. That's the vehicle I have.
Check his channel. Both the GV80 and the ST made an appearance against the MDX. The CGL 5.7L is heavy and slow. That should change once they put their new inline 6 from the Wagoneer.
@chiemekaa I've seen the video couple weeks ago you're referring to between the Genesis GV80, Acura MDX Type S and Ford Explorer ST. I saw that video already. The Ford Explorer ST won that challenge. That was a very interesting challenge. The Jeep Grand Cherokee L with the 5.7 liter V8 engine is not slow. Nope. It has the competitive numbers to challenge the Genesis GV80, Acura MDX Type S, BMW X5 shown in this video, Audi Q8 S Line shown in this video and the Ford Explorer ST. It's not going to beat all five of those vehicles. It will not. However, it'll beat either two or three of them though. One way to test out the performance is to race it against the five vehicles I mentioned. Simple as that.
Turns out not that much haha. Whoever owns it has the same color and in person it looks really nice and fresh for a modern car entering this awkward "psuedo-electric design" language that a lot of cars are adopting now. Good races!
I think the difference why the mdx always takes off slower is the drivers reaction time. The final drag race the bimmer was brake torquing but we don’t if the mdx was
Not sure about the 2024 but remember in on the 2023 model Type S is less loaded than the SHAWD and less comfortable as well. The sound system, vented seats that are standard on SHAWD are not equipped on Type S.
@@manofsesame3024 My value for dollar comment is comparing the Type-S to the other SUV's in the video and not other MDX models. I can't speak to US models but in Canada the Type-S Ultra (there is only one model now) has every feature and more than the lower models. There is no feature a lower model has that's better or missing from the Type-S Ultra The Type-S Ultra is $88K Canadian, a similar spec X5 is going to cost you at least $20K more which is why I feel the Type-S is such a good value
@@user-hi1xc3pn1e Recent models are not enough old to breakdown. N54 which is notorious for terrible reliability has good reliability rating at that time.
These B58’s do not leak. They are one of the best modern engines ever built. Toyota even put their badge on it with Supra. Same drivetrain. So what you are saying is a lie. Now Google Acura recalls all J35 engines and 10 speed transmissions. Also steering racks failing and stop sales.

Huh? Acura won’t cost anywhere near the Germans to fix. Acura and Lexus are both reliable German Brands will cost you a mortgage to maintain. Hell no to German brands
No it won’t. You clearly don’t know about these new J30 engines. They have small port heads and small Turbo. That makes max power at low rpm and is limited to 6k rpm max. This makes for a perfect daily driver with power in the whole rev range. Instant gratification. Now the problem is tuning. ECU and TCU is locked and limited to 6Krpm. You will need to upgrade heads and have them opened up and ported, add a large port manifold, along with bigger turbo. Easy 20k job and your warranty is done. Half the engine has to come apart. Now the bigger problem. Transmission is max torque to 340 pounds. It’s also max range is 6k rpm. A bigger turbo will make huge power from 4500rpm to 7500, but won’t go past 6k. Now you see the problem. This is why you don’t see these all modded. I build cars for a living. Acura did this to save the 10 speed from blowing up. They chose in house 10 speed for cost and availability. It’s not a performance transmission. They learned the hard way with Honda minivan with J35 and 10 speeds blowing up under high rpm’s. Research is your best friend. This is why many TLX and MDX Type S owners are upset with Acura.
Also keep in mind, a Ktuner will give max 20 hp. It will also void warranty when the transmission blows. Many transmissions are having issues. This is why you see many of them for sale. Many trade them in for BMW or Audi if they want performance and reliability.
