complaining about the touch pad boggles my mind and i hope that manufacturers don’t remove them! why would you want a touchscreen that’s always covered in fingerprints in a premium vehicle? i also find it more distracting to have to reach out and hit an icon. the obsession on youtube to have to touch everything, to have bigger screens is unreal. physical buttons and controls for the win!
Gloss black. I have found a little end-dust on a micro fiber rag helps keep dust from setting on it. Also some compressed air purchased for computer keyboards has a anti static property that will repel dust. Just don't touch it. Nothing works on fingerprints.
THX for that Tip!! I need to try that - I have a 22 MDX Advance with lots of Gloss Black . Despite these cleaning methods, amazing that Car makers would even use this stuiff! But they Do. I really Like My MDX for sure.
Southern California driver here and turned in MDX when lease ended. I no longer want to pay for full tank premium gas. Also looking for hybrid. I dont want electric for many reasons.
I work in sales at an Acura dealership in Ontario and I feel pretty confident in saying that touch screens will be coming back and replacing the track pad. The ZDX being re-released later this year as in EV has already adopted this. On a side note, Acura will also be moving away from their ELS Studio sound system and will be using Bang and Olufsen. Exciting things to come!
This is obviously a nice vehicle, but the gas mileage is horrible. 21mpg on the highway? An inline 6 turbo BMW engine gets far better gas mileage in almost any application. The track pad disaster, the push button transmission AND the engine thirst will cause many shrewd buyers to look elsewhere. Just my two cents...😊
Forget the competitors,,calling the buttons outdated. All that tapity tap screen function is stupid, distracting, and frustrating. That's what kept me from buying a new Lexus. All that tapping (texting) is what's outdated!
Thanks for the reviews! We have a 6 cylinder RDX from 2018 we love. Drove the new MDX hoping to love it and it fell so short of expectations. The stitching felt cheap and over the top, the piano black high gloss everywhere. Also found the steering loose and the responsiveness of the gas to be non optimal. Overall the driving experience was so disappointing for a car that brought that unique level of luxury with drivability. My two cents. Thank you!
We wanted to like the new MDX on our test drive. It was very disappointing, the quality is around Honda level and it doesn't feel luxurious or comfortable at all.
Absolutely...it really is a breeze to use. What folks don't realize is that when you have a touchscreen like I do on my other vehicle, your eyes become focused on where your finger is touching on the screen, so you tend to loose visual of the road for however brief that moment is. However, with the touchpad, as you lean back and work it, the screen is in your visual field, so you are seeing both the road as well as the screen. So you aren't loosing visual connection with the road. A year in and we have zero complaints with our 2023MDX. Acura, if they were smart should have made it dual function because they are losing a lot of buyers who have been led to believe that touchscreen equals a superior driving experience. Hence they won't even give it fair effort.
I'd love an RDX or MDX if they had a touchscreen. I love Acura design way more than Lexus, who finally started using touchscreens. The new zdx has a large touchscreen, so that's great! 😊
The trackpad and no touch screen are the reasons I removed MDX from the list of vehicles to consider. People might get use to it but i don't think this is most intuitive way of interacting with the car. Mazda had no touch screen while driving which they fixed and now allow to use of touch screen in apple car play and android auto. Acura will be a great car once they fix their infotainment system. They SERIOUSLY need to fix it.
MDX Type S owner here. Have you ever tried/used this this trackpad for an extended period of time? It's great, and it keeps your screen fingerprint free. I had similar thoughts as you before actually trying the damn thing, lol. You'll be surprised.
@@bradstonesifer3398 I haven't used a touchpad for an extended period of time because I don't own a Acura haha. I have an X5, it doesn't have a touchpad but there is a rotary dial to navigate. it keeps the screen free of fingerprints but still not the most intuitive way. I am not always using my touch screen but there have been times that touch screen is very handy to use. If a touchpad is the best way to use it, then the question is why Honda uses a touchscreen and the majority of the car companies use a touch screen and not a touchpad.
People are so scared of German brands , they think they brake all the times and to fix them is gonna bankrupt them . :-) Or they rather buy a Tesla , cause they want to be so badly to be exposed daily on their trips to a very high EMF .
Acura has consistently over delivered with their MDX, ever since the first generation. Too expensive (for me) and perhaps (personally) a little too over styled for my tastes. Although a great vehicle, I would literally purchase ANY of the other comparable offered… price wise, style and badge. Thanks for the video.
The front end of the MDX just looks so good. Possibly the best looking front-end of any mid-size SUV. The rear needs some work. Touchscreens are horrible for cars. They force you to take your eyes off the road.
Precisely...folks just don't get it that touchscreen takes your eyes off the road and that fraction of a moment could be the difference between avoiding an accident. People just assume touchscreen is a better product because they are conflating using a touchscreen tablet with using a touchscreen while driving. It is two different experiences. Leaning back and using the touchpad allows the screen to be within my visual field of my surroundings. So I am not taking my eyes off the road to see where I am placing my finger on the touchscreen. My other vehicle is a touchscreen and I can tell you that the driving experience is far better when I am in the MDX. I can't fathom how folks don't see or comprehend the difference. Butvto each his own.
@@s.patterson5698 Exactly. My current and previous cars had and have a knob and touchscreen. I only use the touchscreen when I absolutely have to, and that is very rare.
@@s.patterson5698 agree with you. We came from a Volvo XC90 where almost EVERYTHING is through the touchscreen to the Type S and found the combination of physical buttons and the track-pad much easier & practical to use in everyday driving. But as you said, to each his/her own.
Another great review guys! Also another one of those - oh so close to "the perfect 'if you could only have one vehicle'..." deals, were it not for a couple spoilers, that cockamamie shifter, the track pad... the slow heating elements. Don't they ever beta test these models?!
355 isn’t enough? What happened that people want SUVs to be sports cars. Then again, does seem like HP and 0-60 numbers are more important than having a fun driving car..or even reliable.
I purchased a 2022 MDX 4 months ago and I LOVE IT. It was a surprise and an SUV i didn’t pay much attention to when i was shopping for one. Drives awesome, comfortable, great for road trips, and yes.. the track pad is not that bad. It’s actually nice to have a screen clear of finger prints. I wouldn’t mind upgrading to a type S.
I hope when center seats are removed they still have a cup holder located in the center console like gms's product. I'll go for the Pilot , as always nice review 👍
Great video, as usual, I have a 2015 TLX which I love. Like you, not a fan of the trackpad or the power shift buttons. If my son's 2017 Elantra has a true touchpad, then why can't Acura do the same? Sigh. Taking longer to heat seats and the steering wheel wouldn't work too well in Ontario, especially when no such problems with older models. Great video again 🙂
Ignoring price, and not needing a third row, how does this compare vs. a base Cayenne? Steering, brakes, ride, quietness, stereo? Comparing top Type S vs Base Cayenne vs A6 Allroad?
I hope Acura keeps the track pad. I also have a car with a touch pad and I think they should be outlawed by NHTSA. I was asked What is the different between a track pad and a touch pad? I do not move from my driving position. On my other car I need to reach forward to touch the screen . By moving from my sitting position my side and rearview mirror are not set correctly. Also I try to use voice commands . It’s all about what is good for you. Thank you for your question.
Enjoying mine. Nearly went with X7 40i…but decided to stick with this as it gives me almost everything the BMW has for much less…except the fuel economy. I really love the ride quality, the comfort mode is just butter. I will just upgrade to an Alpina XB7 in the future.
Great review! This looks amazing, but we have one of the rare 2020 MDX performance hybrids, so we're not letting go of it anytime soon! The gas mileage on the regular models is awful, and I liked that the hybrid has 320 HP combined and was far more responsive and quicker than regular (not Type S) versions. The hybrid doesn't get amazing gas mileage, but it's a big improvement. My gripes are the push button shifter (so dumb, but you get used to it), the hood flexes a bit when you're on the highway, and there's a little lag in the dual-clutch transmission at low speeds, especially in reverse. It's fine at higher speeds, but it's a little weird.
Didn't expect 70k to be the price.... wow! No thanks. We're going to be in the market for something like this and we'll just take this off the list. Looks nice, but we're not spending X5 money on a car. Not gonna happen.
Andrea! Get it! I love how you whip these vehicles...looking like a race car driver. Let's not forget...I love seeing Zack's face as he's holding on for dear life, as well.
Guys, the 2018-2020 Sport Hybrid transformed into this redesign would have been a GRAND SLAM!! No Brainer. I have a 22 MDX Advance, and yearning for a Type S .....Maybe - this August at my lease expiration. But with a $38,500 Buyout price (in US dollars {NY}), this August, with only 17K miles on the clock now, probably 21K by August, that makes for a great appeal. Maybe I could make a deal, buy mine at that price, and Flip It for considerably more providing a good piece of change for a new Type S deposit. Higher Loan Interest rates are a killer tho! FWIW, If Acura had continued the Sport Hybrid into this redesign and availbale in August 2021 when I leased mine, for another $1800 for a 3.0L Turbo, with more HP & Torque and better MPGs (by about 15-20%) across the board, That would have been a total No -Brainer. I think they missed a tremendous mark. No EVs for me!
Compared the 23 gx460 and this wannabe German Ride Lexus Engine Lexus v8 lasts forever Mpg. Who cares Off road Lexus Interior. Lexus all leather Fit and finish Lexus made in Japan not Canada no offense The gx is proven to last 200000 miles with zero problems So gx 460 hands down Who is racing around in an suv??? Lexus wins I paid 69000 out the door everything included luxury model Love it
Dude, the GX is getting 14 around town and maybe 18-19 on the highway at best. Fit n' finish? Unless you've been in the MDX and driven it for a few weeks, how would you know? Just keep it real.... for the price, Lexus wins, but the MPG in the GX is bad. There's a lot of good with it as you mentioned - longevity, resale, Mark Levinson stereo, ride - but nothing is perfect. Come on off that high horse. I'll get you a ladder!! btw, I drive an older LS460 so I'm with you.... that V8 is chef's kiss wonderful.
There is no comparison with the Mazda SUV, SH-AWD lays down the power in conjunction with the transmission + engine. This, providing unique ability to make the MDX feels nimble, smaller and faster. However, the fast part is all up in the air, since its a big heavy SUV and the at the Type S taps out at 355HP. Basic X5 has 335HP but we all know BMW engineers always leave a bit of HP hidden just for the fun. Most people don’t realize that the standard MDX versus the Type S, is only about 1 sec quicker. While the moniker type S does not solidify performance, there is reliability that comes behind the engineering of the MdX. We all know BMW X5 are expensive to fix. Piano black is so pre- covid, not classic at all.
I had a new 2024 MDX AWD w/superhandling option, as a loaner recently. The quiet interior, and very comfortable seats made this pleasure to drive. The super handling AWD was impressive in the sport mode, and made coming out of a curve fun. I didn’t care for the push button drive, touchpad and all the piano black trim. Having had a terrible experience with Acura build quality (water leaks to the interior), I would have to pass on any new Acura. The BMW X5 or X5M would be my pick for something comparable (third row is not important to me). Gas mileage on the MDX was poor, and a big negative these days.
I think I would spend the extra few grand and get the GV80 instead of this. Much nicer interior. I can't stand the piano black and it will become gross in no time. That being said this is pretty much a lease vehicle.
I was eyeing a 2023 RDX A-Spec in the exact Red. In the short 30-minute test drive, and hitting the backroads it checked all the boxes. When I went again, to talk about numbers, and they offered me to do a longer, extended test drive, I took that offer on. Did a more realistic drive (e.g. along my daily routine, around town, etc). The touchpad and infotainment, when you ACTUALLY have to USE it, was the thing that killed the deal.
I traded in my 23 x7 m60i for an MDX Type S. One of the best vehicle decisions I made. The ergonomics are so much better, easier, and safer in the MDX. A lot of car reviewers are criticizing the push button shifter; I agree that it takes up more space than other solutions, but the toggle shifter in my previous BMW was frustrating and dangerous as it was easy to over or under toggle ending up in the wrong gear. The push button shifter fixes that issue by having a dedicated key for each specific gear.
Type A is also $20-30,000 less than M and AMG performance trims, and significantly more reliable over life span than BMW and Merc, without the higher level of performance. Value for $.
Can you lower the suspension when you park? I need to lower the height for my dog to jump in the back. I don't recall seeing a physical switch. How does it work?
