I hope the crafting section includes things about recipes. I remember in the past, we would harvest monster parts, or search for certain herbs, in order to make potions and items. It would be cool to need to find and defeat a basilisk in order to get it's eyes for a wand of petrification for example.
@InsightCheck
@InsightCheck 22 дня назад
Exactly, things like this would be awesome. Some guidelines and ideas for how to incorporate different monster parts. I don't need specifics, but some framework to work from built into the books would be amazing.

I hope its better than the d&d crafting i know of. What was the point to calling it crafting when there was a gold cost to it and it was the same price as just buying it from a merchant. Seriously if you can make it, it should be nearly costless and in terms of buying the mats still be cheaper than the completed potion with store mark up

I'm actually hoping that magic item crafting and pricing aren't TOO detailed. I dont want to return to 3.5 design where seemingly every handbook and guide included a WBL shopping list players could wave at their DM regardless of the world they were playing in
@InsightCheck
@InsightCheck 22 дня назад
Yeah I can get with this. I just want good "guidance" and not necessarily 10 pages of details about how much something costs haha. Same for crafting. Just some information about how to handle it in game and recommendations for how to create things around it would be great.
@SerifSansSerif
@SerifSansSerif 22 дня назад
Pricing from 2014 books including modules is.... Bad. The treasure modules hand out is absolutely obscene and prices are low. Crafting needs a HUGE upgrade, and yeah I don't want 3.5. Bastions and weapon masteries are kind of reflavors of older options, and even though they aren't 3.5 per se, they are VERY 3.5 in focus and issues they bring up. (Weapons masteries are fiddly bullshit that is yet another thing to manage, much like some of the new dice resource pools that the UA subclasses had), and bastions can allow for exploits and detract from the DM's main narrative to gain those exploits)

I love that they are making more titanic creatures, my first thought when I heard of the Elder Tempest was pirates that sail along behind it looting and kidnaping in it's wake. The Elder Tempest itself is an unapproachable force of nature, pirates in a loose alliance as they plunder behind it are tangible threats that would exist in this world. Big cities, of course, would have defensive arrays that would defend against casual flybys, but a modestly wealthy port town would be a cracked egg ripe for a dozen pirate ships to "offer aid" in the form of taking all that heavy heavy gold off their hands and reducing the number of mouths to feed.

I’ve been hyped for the new PHB stuff from day one, but besides that, the Monster Manual is what I’m really excited about. I’ve sat read down and read mine for fun a couple times and I love the way monsters work, especially with the different types. And now we’re getting multiple different types of the same monsters that are either easier, more dangerous or both for all of them. Plants guys, plants. When my friend told me she wanted the Favored Enemy for her Ranger to be Plants, I told her it wouldn’t be that useful because there aren’t hardly any plant monsters. Now that shouldn’t be the case.
@InsightCheck
@InsightCheck 22 дня назад
I am unreasonably excited for the new Monster Manual. To me that’s the other half of the picture. The options in the PHB are only as interesting and powerful as they are when placed in the context of the monsters and other challenges. Can’t wait!
@jericksonaudio1667
@jericksonaudio1667 22 дня назад
From what we saw in the later playtests, as well as what we have seen and heard since then - this updated PHB sound like it is going to be great for the game and I am looking forward to reading it and incorporating it into my games. I agree, Hasbro sucks. I wish they weren’t the parent company behind DND. I play DND with a couple friend groups and I have asked around in each of them if they would consider switching to a different system (Pathfinder, Mork Borg, Daggerheart, MCDM RPG, Tales of Valiant, etc etc etc) and not a single person has said they are interested. A few said they would be willing to try a one shot, but a few others said they just didn’t want to learn a new system. Which is a shame, but I understand. We are all in our 30s and don’t always have time to learn a new system. So we are gonna stick with DND and continue having a blast playing it together. But I think we all have to admit that the original 5e design has gotten a bit long in the tooth, and from what I have seen, most players play the game differently from how it looks in the 2014 PHB. The 2024 PHB seems to be bringing the rules more in line with how players are currently playing the game AND balancing some glaring issues that have been apparent for quite a while. I am thrilled there is an updated PHB coming out this year and I cannot wait to start digging through and seeing what it has to offer! And if you don’t wanna buy it - I fully support you. Buy it used, or photocopy it, or find a PDF online. But I do truly think the 2024 PHB will be great for the game and will be worth grabbing.
@InsightCheck
@InsightCheck 22 дня назад
I'm pretty much fully inline with you here. My group is the same, we are all in our 30s, have kids and jobs and don't have the time to devote to learning a bunch of new systems. I enjoy playing one shots of Daggerheart and will absolutely do the same for MCDM and DC20 but I really don't expect us to be "switching" any time soon. Maybe in the future, but who knows. The 2024 revision seems to be on track to make for a meaningful improvement to the game and I am genuinely excited to see how it all plays out. Hasbro sucks. We all agree lol, but that doesn't detract from the design team's work.

I don't they are going to level cap feats beyond level 4. I think they will class restrict feats the way that ToV does with their three talent lists but instead of using the class or group of classes as the prerequisite they will use a proficiency. For example, a feat that they want to restrict to martial characters will have the prerequisite "proficiency with a martial weapon" and spell caster feats will have "Ability to use a spell casting focus". This also allows subclasses that gain access to those abilities the opportunity to take those feats.
@williamgordon5443
@williamgordon5443 22 дня назад
The issue with the feats is that the fighting styles are now feats that is going to cut into that amount, and if they are counting the epic feats, then that is also cutting into that count. These two could reduce the amount of feats down to the 50s.
@Razdasoldier
@Razdasoldier 21 день назад
Fair! I did not think about fighting style feats.
@ODDnanref
@ODDnanref 17 дней назад
There are 11 fighting styles. So 64 feats. There are 46 feats in the ohb if you count elemental adept separately for each damage type. So that is between 10-4 new feats for the new phb and a rework on the feats that did not work at all or were outright unusable. Which you could say for some of the more extreme cases, are essentially new feats.
@Elkay_J
@Elkay_J 22 дня назад
While 75 feats is super impressive and exciting, it's tempered if the fighting styles are still feats like they are in the play test. Between that and the "ability score increase" potentially also being a feat that's over a dozen feats that really aren't "feats" per se

Honestly, I kinda liked the crafting rules in Xanathar's. My only stipulation would be that they are guidelines, and not rules, and the DM can add or subtract detail as they see fit. For example, I typically wouldn't require players to hope they get a formula as a random drop if they are simply creating an uncommon magic item. If the item they are creating feels like a natural extension of what their character can already do, I would just add a small amount of time to the item creation for them to figure out a formula. If you're a Forge Cleric, you don't need a formula to create a +1 weapon. You're a Forge Cleric, you ARE the formula. I'd only really enforce the formula rule for rare or rarer magic items.

There's a lot of substance changes i dont want that i saw from the playtests that i fear will be added. Unfortunately, i think it's going more the way of 3.5 than the changes i want. The backgrounds giving your asi is not good to me. I think it'll end up witha LOT of stereotypical street urchin rogues and Outcast Warlocks and Soldier fighters which will result in a far worse experience than the species bonuses. The Masteries are very finicky and overload your dm with what they have to remember/consider. Bastions detract from your main adventure. Classes still feel too same-y due to overlapping subclasses. More subclasses shown rely on dice pools tomspend as resources which makes the resources worse or just not worth using for optional uses Monsters need a boost and need to be revised so they aren't just HP sacks. Will i buy theses books? Probably. Will i play them? Probably not.

I personally do like it for the flavor of being able to be a different and unique type of race/species. For character options, it makes so many different characters just way more viable, where you can play a tiefling cleric for example and not be mechanically at a disadvantage because your bonuses don't help wisdom. Plus as different as humans can be, I'd say making a generalization of "x race is better than every body else at x thing" is just a bit weird since I'm sure there could be lore reasons thematically as to why they aren't the "norm"

Won't be purchasing any of the new edition books. Hasbro and WotC deserve no support given their consistent, under-handed tactics. And yes, I realise it's intended as a revised 5th edition, but it's a new edition as far as I'm concerned.

Sticking with the books I got. I don't want anything else from the virtue signaling company. I'll make up my own stuff and use 3rd party/homebrew.

I wish i could be excited, but Hasbro-WOTC has pulled so many things that rubbed me wrong that i might stick in the Base-5E and 3rd party Sphere for a while.

“Buy the new books, and then buy tasha 2.0, then monster manual 2.0, then dm guide 2.0, then bigby 2.0, then fizban2.0 then … “ And idiots will buy it

lol this is literally exactly why it isn’t a “new edition” but rather a revision. I’m not confident you understand what the point of this is or that you’re just too cynical to care. Yes, there will be 3 new core rule books (PHB, DMG and MM) that’s been clear for 2 years now. But the entire point of them making backward compatible revisions with these 2024 books is so that you can continue to use your existing books and *not* need to buy Fizban’s or Bigby’s or Tasha’s again. Incidentally, so much of the content of those books are actually going to be appearing in these books making these far better value for money for new players as they will benefit from 10 years of content without needing to buy 10 years of content. If they had instead made a 6e and it was so fundamentally different they there was no compatibility between the two then they could easily just sell you Fizban’s again. Or, if your complaint is that they plan to continue selling books… I’m not sure what to tell you…

@@InsightCheck my complaint is the removal of so much content and the swapping around of the mechanics. “Backgrounds” now provide the mechanical benefits that “species” used to so now every human, elf, aasimar etc will just be using the same exact overpowered combos. Everyone has a flight speed, everyone has dark vision, etc etc Maybe I am cynical, but this reeks of new edition because DND is more popular than ever and WOTC wants its money from that. Hence the wizard losing so many subclasses so they can sell you another book soon. I just don’t see how any of this could be backwards compatible, it’s changing at the cellular level.

First I don’t trust WotC anymore Second the feats sound like 3.5 I’ll not buy anything unless it’s second hand, no more money to WotC from me. I like playing 3.5 and have enough 5e books to not worry about it

Hey that's a fair perspective. To me, it's less WotC and the actual designers than it is Hasbro but I feel where you're coming from :).

@@unnefer001 That's not how that works bucko. I don't think coming into a small creators channel to complain about a multi-million/billion dollar company helps anyone. They have official channels and forums to do that in where your voice will be heard where it matters. They have a lot to be rightfully called out for, but I am not sure this is the place for it other than to grumble about hating WotC because that's the popular thing to do these days. We're gonna be yapping about the OGL for decades.
