The 2024 Jeep Compass Is An Expensive Mini-Grand Cherokee, But Is It Worth It? | Review

With an MSRP that sails right past the competition to over $50,0000 (in the Trailhawk trim), the question must be asked: is the Jeep Compass the scale model Grand Cherokee of your dreams, or is it just too expensive to consider in the small SUV segment that includes strong values like the Crosstrek and HR-V and reliable efficient models like the Corolla Cross Hybrid?

Exactly -there seem to be 2 types of opinions on the Compass. 1. I would never in a million years buy one because they’re overpriced trash. 2. I own one and I love it. I picked up a ‘24 Trailhawk, dripped out (Elite and Sun/Sound) and it checked all the blocks for what I needed/wanted. Realizing that a turbo requires regular oil changes and you don’t wanna drive this like a wrangler or a hellcat, the Compass is a very reasonable and well liked option for those who understand things cost more in 2024 than they did back in ‘83.

Sorry they took advantage of you. You can buy that car now for around $26k. Don't feel bad though,the same happened to me with a 2025 Honda pilot 2 months ago. I thought I was getting a really good deal but I also knew I should have waited a little longer because things were going to get even uglier for dealership. Fast-forward 2 months and now you can find a 2024 Compass latitude for $25k, or the basic trim Laredo dor $21,500. It really depends on the dealership and how much you know about negotiating a deal, but just yesterday I left a Dealer and didn't get a 2024 Compass Laredo because they only had Grey and Black, didn't like any of the colors, and because I really didn't wanted to buy the vehicle yet, was just testing ground to see what I could get away with.

I enjoy all your reviews but especially appreciate your always well reasoned, practical "if my money were on the line..." wind up. Thanks. As Kia fan / Subaru fan I have never considered a Jeep vehicle due their long standing reputation of expensive to buy, operate, and maintain. One of my Good friend who travels for a living to all corners of the country. He is 6’3” tall and almost 300lbs. After 2 weeks of ownership he gave me a ride somewhere and he wished he never bought the compass. He said he was thinking only about the discount they were offering at the time and not about the suv itself. He is way to big to be comfortable he looks show horned in the driver seat. He traded a Kia Sorrento and put 100’s of thousands of miles on it after 4 years and it looked like new still. This compass is all scratched and marred up inside with the black everywhere. He admitted to me he made a big mistake. And he’s had many issues.

Issues I have to agree makes me regret this Jeep I bought 6 months ago, first thing is the auto braking and Adaptive cruise will shut off if it's raining or misty out, and I kid you not if you are passing under a overpass and NOBODY is around you is screams BRAKE for a second and then back to normal. I am not happy with these sensor issues and I believe I should have bought the Tesla model 3! Did I mention that the 2.0L Turbo sounds like a diesel engine? The positives are great gas mileage( I have seen 37-40 mpg) and the ride is good and it handles itself when the road gets bumpy, the Infotainment center is awesome but beyond that not enough room in the back compared the Cherokee I traded in.

I like the look of the Compass. And I think they have addressed the complaints people had with it. I would definitely buy it except for the price. I don’t really know how negotiable the price is because I haven’t tried to price it. The MSRP is in my opinion too high and definitely dissuades any further interest in it. This car is about the same size as a Cadillac XT4 and is approaching its price. I would consider the top trim Compass, fully loaded with everything, if it sold for $40K. It’s not worth more to me.

The ONLY, absolutely ONLY, reason to consider this model is if it is offered ~$10k below MSRP. Yes, $10k. Dealers have tons of them on lots, they don't sell for obvious reasons, so some dealers actually have to offer over $10k discounts to get rid of them. Compass' MSRP just ridiculous, anyone who gets a Compass with a smaller discount makes a mistake.

This is the best vehicle in it's class and it actually competes not with shitty corolla, seltos and other CVT gutless junk - Compass has the best engine (2.0L turbo with way more power), best interior, best 4x4 system - there is nobody in this comparison even close to Compass capabilities, next - interiuor is absolutely on different level - Subaru/Toyota/Honda has absolute just materials and design, Transmission - Compass is equipped with 8-speed TYransmission instead of CVT... so that should tell to someone who looks into spect to compare this to Vehicles from higher segments - like BMW, AUDI, MB, Range Rover - not to cheap CVT 100 hp CUVs )))))

I’ve got a question about seat comfort. Every car seems to get 7,8,9,10. Is the rating really out of 10 if you only really use 4 options? What would it take to be rated a 5? How about a 3? What would you have to be confronted with to get a seat rating of 1? How much different from a 2 is that REALLY? The seat rating feels like it could be “good”, “great”, and “amazing” and have the same level of specificity.

Already decided when I go to buy a new vehicle in 2024 Spring, it's going to be hybrid (maybe plug-in) and AWD, so whichever brand that does it best, gets the money I guess. @markmiller3279
@markmiller3279 10 месяцев назад
As he often notes, manufacturers measure legroom in a variety of ways. Reviews of the Corolla Cross haven't found it unusually cramped for the segment. You can fit four adult men in it. It may not be great for child seats, but that's an issue for the class as a whole.
@rightlanehog3151
@rightlanehog3151 10 месяцев назад
@@markmiller3279 The interior space efficiency of most TNGA designs is simply awful. Today's RAV4 has LESS headroom than the last real Yaris hatch Toyota sold in North America! When it comes to occupant accommodation, the current Corolla sedan and hatch are a shadow of the models which preceded them. Many, many reviews have noted the Cross's rear leg room deficiency compared to its chief competitors. Even reviewers who are only 5'6" or 5'7" have drawn attention to the Cross's cramped back seat. I will acknowledge Toyota finally provided ample rear seat headroom with the Cross but neglected space for legs or modern rear-facing child seats. In summary, the TNGA-C platform simply lacks the wheelbase to provide adequate rear seat legroom. In Europe, Toyota stretched this wheelbase for their Corolla wagon to make it a true family car and they should have done the same for every other TNGA-C model.

I worked at Enterprise for a few years and the updated ones are definitely a lot nicer than the previous, but even the top trim isn’t justified. We’d get in the top end model and the Latitude Plus models and I think the Latitude Plus is a MUCH better option. Dual zone climate, automated safety systems, heated seats and steering wheel, and you can upgrade it with packages for the full LCD gauge cluster, surround view camera, and a couple other nice goodies for under/around 30k and I think that is a MUCH better deal and more logical, and I would understand paying for that mode. @@AAutoBuyersGuide The features I look for in my vehicle are mainly comfort oriented. Heated/cooled front seats, heated rears+steering wheel, adaptive cruise/auto braking, parking sensors. A plus if a vehicle has 360 camera, auto steering, and pano sunroof. If I was looking to purchase new, Seltos/Kona cover most, if not all plus a more powerful engine. I know it's an easy out to point to the Koreans for features, but the Lincoln Corsair can be equipped with most of the features (just did it on their website) for 50K, and taking out the pano roof and heated rears brings that down quite a bit. CPO 2022 Compasses with all the goodies are selling around $30-33k all over the place. If I was dead set on a Compass, I would look to CPO. The new pricing just doesn't make any sense, even the Limited with no options encroaches on base X1 and Q3. Even with less features the leap in overall quality outweighs losing a couple less-necessary features. Sorry for the long essay, I do like the Compass (almost bought a '22 Latitude Lux with the lighter interior, 360 camera and other goodies for 29K), but the new pricing confounds me. TLDR; I would either look to a CPO Compass, new Seltos/Kona, or look to the X1/Q3/Corsair if I was dead set on a fully loaded Compass but could give up a few features for more overall quality/performance. For the offroading 99% of consumers do, all of those options would suffice, the Compass doesn't have any substantial gains over the rest.

We don't know for sure, but the turbo likely added some. Not 1,000 lbs mind you so I'm guessing there's an error in the numbers.

I own 2020 Compass Trailhawk….poor gas mileage…14 mpg…tiny gas tank 13.5 gallons …have to fill up every week. I am having electrical/electronics problems…light on console goes off and radio change stations instead. Of volume on the steering wheel…when it works..everything is back to normal. I live on a dirt/ rocky hillside road…the 4-wheel systems..NOTVERY GOOD ..I get struck too often….BFG Terrain tires… My rear view camera somehow shifted showing more of the white bumbers , blinding at nights… If need to off roading get the Subaru Cross trek…! Compass is easy to drive and find parking..best feature! Aloha

It's a shame that Europe gets the Compass and Renegade in 4XE plug in, but we do not. I am wondering if this new 2.0 turbo is a detuned version of the Hurricane engine in the Hornet and Tonale? Looks the same in pictures. Reliability is always the question with these. I'd punt it after the warranty is up.

The Compass looks fantastic, but I can't get over that price. Ten years ago, the Compass was selling at a discounted price of $16k-$18k. I don't know what the hell Jeep is thinking with their pricing structure now. Quality is not monumentally better and they have questionable Italian engineering now. If I'm going to pick on Jeep, I also need to pick on another domestic manufacturer, Ford. Their cheapest CUV is the Escape, which STARTS at $28k...with hubcaps and unpainted mirrors. Ford and FCA have gone absolutely bonkers with their pricing. It's as if they think they're suddenly well-respected near-luxury brands simply because they've given them pretty styling and inflated the price tags. That's a big NOPE from me. GM is the only domestic manufacturer that seems to be keeping their prices reasonable, comparatively speaking. Chevy recently released the all-new $21,500 Trax. It's about $27k loaded. The Chevy Trailblazer is considerably cheaper as well. Buick released the new 2024 Envista, based on the Trax, which starts at $23,500 and is a bit over $30k loaded. All three of these CUVs are similar-sized to the Compass. I wouldn't even consider a Compass without a massive discount. Even with a discount though, their poor reliability track record has me leery. You really have to be a Jeep fanatic to buy one of these anywhere near MSRP. Anything comparable from one of the Japanese companies is going to be cheaper and will likely be monumentally more reliable and longer lasting. To put it into perspective, you can get a Lexus CUV for the price range of a Compass. Insane. Even the much-derided Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, which can be bought with discounts for $24k-$28k, has a 10yr/100k warranty, a good 12yr reliability track record, an excellent selectable AWD system standard, and 8.5 inches of ground clearance.

Seeing all this now that you so nicely displayed the options of the Jeep and others I am now considering hard to buy the Tesla Model Y. The pricing and reliability plus efficiency are really in the running.Yes it might be 50k but tax incentives plus fuel savings makes it no brainer now!! I was really debating a PHEV as well but with gas prices spiking again a Hybrid that needs Gas to recharge batteries is ludacris !!
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 месяцев назад
I'm the EV guy so I'm glad to hear you're considering electric! I do want to clarify (maybe for you, maybe for others reading the comments) that the whole point of a PHEV (Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is that you don't use the engine to recharge the battery. It CAN serve that purpose in some models, but the vehicle is designed to be plugged in at home (a standard 110v outlet will work perfectly for most) and recharge overnight. If the battery does run out of charge on your drive, the vehicle will start the engine and operate in hybrid mode. -Travis
