For decades, Japanese company #Mazda has always placed a high emphasis on driving dynamics. That priority has always even extended to their 3-row family SUV, the CX-9. For 2024, the #MazdaCX90 replaces to the CX-9 and this #CX90TurboS is the most luxurious and powerful vehicle the company has ever produced. Motivated by a 340 HP turbo I-6 cylinder engine boosted by a small electric motor, this #CX90 is designed to be the new flagship vehicle for Mazda.

Happy Friday guys! Hope you all had a great week! Its been a few months since we first drove the CX-90 and we go over our impressions on this car after spending a week with one! Mazda also tells us they'll be sending us the PHEV version sometime next month for a week so expect an updated review on that as well! Hope you all have a great weekend! 😃

The long wheelbase means nothing to interior space, the hood is too long, the cabin is short, that's why it only has less than 80 cu ft when all back seats folded.

You want your cake and eat it too. You go on and on about the rear wheel drive “enthusiast” dynamics and then complain about it being less space efficient(missed opportunity). You simply can’t have the long hood, RWD proportions and have efficient packaging. If you want the most space, then you go for the FWD based Grand Highlander, Atlas, Telluride/Palisade. It isn’t a missed opportunity, it was a design decision.
@kevtn8
@kevtn8 11 месяцев назад
Exactly ! Space and cargo can only be compared to similar sized RWD Crossovers so maybe BMW, Mercedes or Audi that's it. People that care for space will opt for Toyota or Honda regardless. This was intentional design choice by Mazda knowing where they want to go now and in near future !

Not everyone cares about space. I’m a driving enthusiast. I care about driving dynamics and my family is growing so I need a vehicle with a third row. In the cx90’s price range, IMO I believe it looks and handles better than the other vehicles in this category. So that is why I’m getting one. My dealer said it should be ready by next week! Oh and I tried sitting in the 3rd row. I’m bout 5’7” like him but I’m overweight. I set the 2nd row to a comfortable position for me to sit in and then jumped behind my 2nd row position into the 3rd row and I fit fine. I ordered a turbo S premium, so it doesn’t come with a center console in the 2nd row which gives more leg room in the middle for 3rd row passenger. So I have no problem with space in that trim. I live in Hawaii so I will not be doing any long road trips with it. So to me this is the perfect vehicle that offers a 3rd row of seating.

I believe people forget about Mazda vehicles. This is very nice and I have seen a few other RU-vid videos on this where they compared this vehicle against the like of a BMW and a Mercedes. It didn’t win, but was right there with them and $30k less. That is a win to me. The design is nice by being sporty and luxurious at the same time. If I needed the room, this would be a look and deserves a test drive to compare with other vehicles. The class it competes in has some strong competition and without actually driving I can’t say it is better. But it is really nice.

You keep mentioning "missed opportunities". Regarding size/space don't think they missed anything at all. It is built to compete across "segments" so, while it may not have as much room as some mainstream rivals, it offers a better interior and driving experience. And, while it may not be as quick as the dragstrip as some of the premium offerings, it has more room than most, and costs tens of thousands less. It is THE sweet spot.

@@yankeesusa1 So you're basing this "miss" on a video that you saw on RU-vid from a Toyota tech who didn't essentially understand Mazda's engineering decisions. Got it. No, those things aren't "misses". Timing chain issues really aren't a thing nowadays and realistically you shouldn't be concerned with one breaking, at anything under say 200,000 mi. And as far as removing the engine to service it, With the current design, we're talking about a 30-minute process if that, And this is according To a Mazda tech that I spoke with directly, who has been working with Mazdas for over 40 years.

Luckily the car is smart enough to understand what is going on when the car is in D, the Driver's seatbelt is unbuckled, the Driver's door is open, and no one is on the Driver's seat. It applies the e-brake and shows a warning message on the speedometer display requiring a Shift To Park before it will start moving again.

of course you get used to it, but when you see a conventional looking shifter like this you don't expect the Parking to require a moment to the left. when I test drove it and put it in "park" it began to reverse when I realized what happened (I just moved it all the way forward expecting it to be in park.) the bottom line is it is 2023 and nearly every manufacture feels the need to put their own twist on how to select drive modes... its maddening but a fact of life.

I typically agree with Sofian’s take on most cars but not on this one. He compares this with other cars that are not direct comparables: less cargo area than a Pilot? (Pilot being a FWD will have a deeper rear cargo compartment) then he says that some things in the CX90 are not as nice as other competitors: names? This is a non-premium RWD 3rd row SUV. It doesn’t have many competitors, maybe the ford explorer? He also criticizes it for not being more ambitious in the design therefore looks like a CX-9… how is this a bad thing? A car manufacturer that is loyal to their design language. Basically a Mazda that looks like a Mazda. Unlike for example Kia/Hyundai/Genesis that have no coherency between their models and look sometimes like Bentleys, Porsches, Mercedes… I have never owned a Mazda but i really like this CX90 and I’m waiting to see the cx70 as we have no use for a 3 row SUV.

So because the Mazda has a different powertrain layout that means it doesn't compete with FWD based crossover SUVs? Doesn't the Grand Cherokee and Explorer still compete with other midsized SUVs? As far as I am aware the Explorer and Highlander are no 1 and number 2 on the list on terms of sales. People cross shop them all the time. Mazda chose to prioritize driving experience in a midsized family SUV while most competitors chose to prioritize space for families.

@@Justmejbful it’d be interesting to know what’s the target segment Mazda is trying to compete against. Any car can compete against any other. Even though the car has more HP/Torque then competitors, it also weighs 2-300lbs more and doesn't allow for aggressive launches. But when you compare 1/4 mile times and trap speeds, you can see where the car shines. Also it is VERY efficient for a non full hybrid design. The 48v hybrid allows you to easily get over 23-25mpg combined. Most competitors only get 20mpg combined in the real world. Overall dont by the S versions for the extra power, because it isn't worth it. The base version will still do 0-60 in 7 seconds while being under stressed. Since it is an all new powertrain, that would be the safer bet.

Drove this trim car yesterday in Dallas. I have owned a LOT of SUV's and my other ride is a Benz AMG GLE. So, after driving the Mazda, I am indifferent as to which car I will drive over what my wife wants to drive. The driving dynamics are excellent, especially at that price point. Steering feel/brake modulation are Mazda, thank God. This is not your living room sofa and if you want an appliance that hauls a ton of stuff, wallows in corners, and is cavernous, this is not the drive for you. IF you want an SUV that drives smaller than it is because of the excellent suspension tuning and driving feel, the Mazda is the car. Tasteful styling is a huge bonus relative to the rest of the competitors. The powertrain is not as smooth as the BMW in the X5, and I had one (before it was T-boned) But a loaded X5 is $80K. In terms of the shifter, it’s an electronic design, so it should, theoretically, automatically put itself in park when you turn the vehicle off. But I understand it’s out of habit to want to put the shifter in park before you turn the car off.

For me, it's between this (highest trim model), or MDX Type-S, or Genesis GV80. All of them the top trim. Finances are not much of a problem, so everyone's been telling me to go GV80. If I want to save some coin, the CX 90. Only thing is, I'm pretty sure the GV80 is dead for driving dynamics, which is where the mazda and acura SUV's shine.

The main reason the center console isn't very deep is that the vehicle is RWD so the engine is mounted front-to-back so there's a transmission under that center console. And the 2nd row console is deeper because the transmission is no longer in the way. Later, in the 3rd row you complained about space - I *know* you understand the compromises of a long hood RWD platform - they probably decided to not make the vehicle any longer than it already is (to add more space in the 3rd row.) You owe it to your readers to point this out when you encounter those compromises during your review. Now WRT the wet plate clutch, hesitation, and occasional jerkiness, I agree with you 100% that this needs work. I think if they double the HP of the pancake electric motor, the hesitations on acceleration would be fixed. As for downshifts, I'm not sure what to say. It just needs a little more time in the oven. Finally, if anyone gets this far; for the love of pete, stop revving engines in neutral! Seriously, it's what caused me to unsubscribe. Unless you're revving a V8, forget about it! People are far more interested (well, car people anyway) in what it sounds like under full load, doing a 0-60 run, or better yet a 1/4 mile run. Thanks.

$61,900!!! Probably a good time to snag a leftover 2022 CX9 with some good discounts if you don't have to have the upgrades the CX90 provides. That 2.5L/6speed combo was pretty darn bulletproof and the Signature trim in that vehicle, topped out around $48K and gave you all the goodies the 90 does. The CX90 is great don't get me wrong, but Mazda has a few misses (pathetic sunroof opening and interior storage for example). Also, I don't understand why Mazda didn't stretch it just a few more inches and give class leading legroom. Then it would be a no-brainer over the competition and was the biggest gripe I had about the CX9.

This all-new Mazda CX-90 completes in both segments standard and premium, they started with an RWD to AWD drivetrain, and an inline 6 turbo powertrain with a new 8-speed. Not to mention the exterior and interior design they have also stepped up their technology and features. This car has and is everything expected of a modern premium SUV for those worrying about the issue, every new car has problems especially when it is new from the ground up. It does have some aspects of Kodo design but it does not look like the CX-9 I don't know why everyone keeps doing that comparison I don't see it. This particular Tirm Turbo S Premium Plus completes with the likes of the new QX-60, the new RX 500h, the new x5, the MDX Type S, the GLE 450, and many more. It's just a great SUV that is worth it over Japanese premium options. Honestly Sofiyan you complain too much also nitpicking every single detail your job is to convince consumers to consider the CX-90 when shopping. until I see the engineering degree you think you have just do your job.

@@joetaylor2038 Yeah the exterior dimensions do fool you on the space available on the interior but most consumers with or without the want to use the space inside should be fine with those interior dimensions. If you want more space get a Tahoe, Sequoia, etc.. These SUVs are for individuals who want a car like drive but with more space.

and you'd have no storage room, I test drove it and it was incredible how there was so little storage space, dead last in the segment for cubby holes, cup holders, shelfs etc. just not practical for families... its a big car (super long because of the engine) but has very impractical interior space.

@@canyonblue737-8 well I’m buying one for my family. This will be my 1st 3 row seater vehicle. Coming from an Audi sedan, a 5 door Subaru and a 2 seater convertible Honda, this has plenty of room for my family. More than I’ll ever have with my 3 cars now and it should be here next week! I’m from Hawaii so I won’t be going on long road trips and I don’t live in my car, so I don’t need a lot of extra storage space. I like to keep all my vehicle interiors clean. I don’t store unnecessary stuff in my vehicle. Cup holders, a storage spot for my sunglasses and my phone is all I need. Nobody is allowed to eat in any of my cars.

I agree with a lot of these comments. You can’t compare this with a front wheel drive pilot or grand highlander because this is a rear wheel drive which is a bad choice for space but good for drive and handling. So you can’t have both. This is more compare to a lower price bmw or Audi.

Only complaint I had of this when I sat in one is that it is actually not particularly space efficient. The center console for example is stupidly shallow to the point I think my mazda6 has a more useable center console. For a family hauler, these inefficiencies can be a deal breaker. It is a stunning car, but honestly a lot of the competitors aren't that far behind in quality. I am excited for the upcoming Chevy Traverse redesign, if it is anything like the current model then it will be an absolute champion of hauling people and their stuff.
