I appreciate the attention to detail throughout all yout videos. But, I must point out thr careful selection of relevant music playing on the stereo. Just love it! Thanks for a your amazing insights Alex & team!
I typically don’t like those design on wheels. But on this lobo it looks so good for whatever reason. Maybe it’s the blue that makes it look that much nicer
"Why is it that there are so many off-road trucks out there, when most people dive on pavement more than they drive off-road" Auto Manufacturer Mr. Krabs: "Hello, I like money :) "
The changes are a lot more extensive than I expected and the name is not what I expected but.... Eh lol I think Ford knew which uhm demographic would really like this setup. It would have been cool to see the 2.3L.EB in this but for the price and ofher changes I think it's an exciting package.
I'd love to see the 2.3, but for a transverse mount North American spec engine they only larger one they have ready to go is the 2.7 Nano, which I could see being problematic shoehorning into a C2 platform vehicle as it barely fit into the Edge (though the transmission could take it, it's the same used on the Edge ST). On the other hand, keep the 2.0 and swap the rest of the drivetrain with the hybrid out of the Nautilus, and that should fit and get you to the same horsepower as the 2.3 and keep CAFE happy.
@@gsc76 On 93 octane, the 2.3 makes 60-80 more horsepower than the 2.0, depending on setup. It makes 70 more ft-lb. I'd consider those to be major improvements. The Corsair is probably running 87 octane. Which only makes 20hp and 30ft-lb more than the 2.0. The other major benefit of the 2.3 is overlap with the Mustang modding community.
@@gsc76 How is the 2.3 not much more powerful than the 2.0? The new 2.0 is 238HP and 277Tq and the 2.3 is 300HP and 310Tq and itis currently in the Explorer. Now put that in a lighter and smaller package and you have a rocket ship that can corner. Not to mention the Focus RS had 350/350 with the 2.3 so this is detuned because we know it can do more. Basically, the Lobo is the cheapest way Ford could "claim" to release a "performance" trim and charge more for a tranny, rear diff, breaks and seats. The Lobo Mode is useless because it's track only, and I don't think anyone is taking this "truck" to the track.
THANK YOU so much for pointing out all the differences in the Lobo version of the Maverick. I watched Redline reviews and all I got from video was painted black trim, some interior goodies and the 7 speed auto so I thought that was it. I was prepared to hate this thing and thought it was a money grab by Ford. Now I know like the title it is not an ST version of the Maverick but it is.. well close...still not a fan of the rims.
Alex, Are you suggesting we have insufficient numbers of 'Lifestyle' pickups in this market or is it a just case of the wrong blend of lifestyle pickups?🤔
imagine if this was a manual then we are talking! I used to love driving low for the performance but I'm all about clearance and practicality these days. This trim is not for me but I am happy its an option!
Alex seldom disappoints with an infotainment music choice to match the vehicle being reviewed. I might've chosen the band Los Lobos "Shakin' Shakin' Shakes".
I usually judge a package by the amount of things I could add after I buy the vehicle. So if the package is wheels and stickers and painting you can always change those things later . This does seem like a well put together package . The transmission, brakes rear end aren't things that are things you can change out after you buy one . I just wish first could have kept the price down in the 20s it's what was extra amazing about the first one . I had a f150 I wasn't particularly impressed with so I'm a little gun shy about getting another Ford . The only upgrade I would like to do without would be the electronics it's all available in the phone in my pocket. Would almost like a model with a double din blank in the dash where you could add your own or not .
Arizona and California residents have seen the occasional Lobo-branded Mexican F-150 for years. It's fun they've extended the name to the US. Great look, including the wheels. The deletion of a gear from the automatic is an interesting decision, as the 8-speed was already a GM-Ford joint venture 9-speed with a gear removed. Is it truly a performance maneuver, or mainly a cost saving one? I'm waiting for the 3-speed SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic.
I like this new version but with all the extras Ford added to the truck, it’ll be priced similarly to the Honda Ridgeline RTL-E (not the Black Edition version).
The base price of this car has gone up by 30 percent since it was introduced as a parts-bin price-leader special. This car doesn't start at 20k anymore - they are at 26k. No function has been added, but the cheap model doesn't even exist. I suppose Ford can do this because no one else makes a good small truck for the US market, but I think this whole thing is daft. As daft as the Dark Horse being as expensive as the purpose-built, all aluminum C8. What was supposed to a cheap but cheerful car that brought utility to people who weren't wealthy or subsidizing their truck with business write-offs - has become a 38k parts bin truck with blue speckled pleather and less utility. Although I'm sure that this drives nicely and will find people who love it, the naked, unadulterated upsell is hard to celebrate. It's also a mystery to me that not a single competing company has slapped something together to compete with this - though we do have multiple mid sized trucks that cost 60k.
I don’t believe that explanation about the transmission one single bit. There is a reason for using it, possibly it makes room for bigger clutch packs…but a computer controlled transmission can skip gears when ever it needs to. Start in second, skip fourth stop up shifting at seventh….there’s no limit to the method nor combination of gear shifting.
The transmission difference is likely no more than a software tweak. The 8 “gears” are achieved by just combining different underdrive and overdrive combinations from the multiple planetary gear sets in the transmission, so its very easy to just skip over one (or more) of the combinations. Lots of transmissions already do this during part throttle up shifts and full throttle downshifts, so it’s really nothing novel to do it for a full throttle up shift. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if they still use all 8 ratios for part throttle and only skip the 2nd “gear” for full throttle.
It’s almost entirely a software tweet, apparently there is some sort of hard hardware change inside but it mostly has to do with the valves and the solenoids. All they do is disable second gear, they don’t physically remove it because they can’t as those planetary gear set are used for every other gear as well
Those wheels remind me of the 1980 Trans Am Turbo wheels. I'm also not a big fan of black wheels. From a distant when you see a vehicle with black wheels it looks like their missing their hub caps.
A Manual! But this version of the Maverick has caught my attention and I actually went out to the Ford website to configure and build to see how much. It's an option. Unfortunately, what really has my concern is build quality and reliability which has taken a hit over the years.
Drop the 2.7 turbo V6 in there. And, extend the roof over the bed, turn it into a mini-Expedition. Dumb idea, but continuing let’s Call it the Galaxie 500.
Wheres is the beef it should be atleast 300 horsepower with the 2.3 then we have something talk about. It looks like a half hearted sport truck effort it has no heart. The Lobo is a all show and no go. Ford really could have came out with something really special.
If I may give some constructive feedback; I'd love more info as to what the video is about on the video title or thumbnail. Like, "Ford Maverick Lobo First look and Impressions" or something so we know what to expect! Excellent video though as usual, love the new mavericks were getting minus those tires LOL.
The Maverick came out in 2022 and I’ve only seen a handful of these out on the road driving. I assume the same is gonna be for this next refresh model another handful in the next four years
It's hilarious.... How some people think what they see outside of their window is a reflection of what exists across the country..... Maybe sales figures are more relevant? ;)
Alex is the best automotive reviewer on RU-vid. Better than throttle house, savage gees, straight pipes, car confections and just about everyone out there.
Agree don't care for the wheels, but do like the grill. Not interested after hearing the price, still waiting for a nice affordable truck. I know the days of the $46,000 sticker price 2015 F130 for a sale price of $35,000 are gone,
The Lobo you can currently build on the website is similar to a Lariat in equipment. There will be a second option Lobo later in the year that drops many of the nice features but starts at 35k or 36.5 after destination.
You'll be waiting a while. Toyota has not said if/when they plan to build it in the USA/Mexico. The rumors point to one for Japan and Asia, but it wouldn't be able to be sold in the USA due to the tariff situation unless they built a plant for it in N. America.
@AAutoBuyersGuide Yeah, but you (Alex) told me a few years ago that Ford wasn't going to build a BEV F-150. And with the success of the Maverick. What Toyota currently says and what they do, could be two totally different things? Nobody's crystal ball Is perfect, we'll just have to wait and see.
It's possible. The Lightning was a truck out of left field, most rumors had pointed to a mid-size EV truck rather than the Lightning we got. However with Toyota and the Scout, we'd see them building a factory if it were coming soon, it's a bigger undertaking for Toyota. They could surprise, but I'd say its less likely than what we've seen.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide Not sure how far in the left field it was? Considering Ford just started production on the Mach-E and there were already spy photos of a prototype F-150 BEV, So I was shocked when you stated there was no chance whatsoever of it going to production (paraphrasing). Especially, since your predictions tend to be well thought out and pretty accurate. Which made its production, truly memorable for me;) Nice to hear you now talk in terms of probabilities and possibilities, instead of absolutes, in this case. Lastly in the same light, lets hope you can also be more open-minded about the possibility of serial hybrids or range extenders, being more efficient in the future, than the few abysmal examples that have hit the US market. Thanks for the feedback.
The only "back to the 80s" car design I like is the Ioniq 5 (I LOVE the Ioniq 5). The wheels on this and the Mach-E? Nah. Looks old, not retro. Also I have to say I much prefer "Lobo" and "Raptor" to alphabet soup.
LoL Lobo Mode: for closed circuit usage only! That's like telling teenagers not to read a book because of explicitly sexual context. Oh Ford, you little tease!
The recalls are pretty insignificant and can be completed with regular maintenance at the dealership. I wouldn’t let recalls deter you if this is the form factor you are looking for
If this is the same transmission, then it is the same weak link - the transmission is rated for LESS torque than the stock engine delivers. That means it has to use sensors and software to limit torque output of your engine so your trans doesn't blow up. You think you have 275ft-lbs? Nope, you got around 240. Oh we are going to skip second? Then torque will be limited even more than before to protect that third gear acting as a tall second. GARBAGE.
I think the maverick is getting entirely too expensive. Ford, like everyone else is increasing the price far higher and faster then inflation. Love the mini truck vibes, should have more power though. It's an ST, but without the power increase
It's called capitalism... And it's hilarious how some people criticize, when vehicles are in high demand or they don't sell well... Those people need to get a life while they eat their sour grapes ;)
Redundant Maverick with worse performance. You can't sell it as a performance vehicle and compare it's identity with previous year Mavericks. It has -12HP and a redundant 7-Speed. Any Mavericks Pre-Lobo that're equipped with the 4k Tow-Package will benefit from it's better gear ratio and actually more performance inclined that whatever this is.
Lost me at same engine as other mavericks. The wheels are hideous and the rest of the truck reminds me of a poorly done early 90’s “ ground effects” package. This project should have started with an EB 2.3 and awd.
You can put 100’s of CDs on a thumb drive and stream music from your phone. I haven’t used the CD player in either of my cars. It really frees up clutter and you can use voice commands to find stuff.
I know you're being funny, but I kinda felt that way about my ex-wife's Jetta S, when we found out it couldn't get the then in-glovebox CD player. But yeah, we can convert our CDs to MP3s, but them on a thumb drive, and blast the night away.
Not a fan of Ford adding $10K to a mid-20K truck spec. Trying to exploit one of their winner vehicles to offset their EV losses and expensive aluminoid full sized trucks methinks.
@@nc3826 Thanks for the comment but F-Series down 10% in Q2 compared to last year. Maverick was up 81% year over year because it WAS a real value. Now they intend to milk it for all it's worth by boosting the transaction average price. Pass.
It comes from the name they use for the Mexican market high-optioned F150. It translates from Spanish as “Wolf”. I think Ford knows who their demographic for this trim level is lol
