It depends on the game but usually link uses magic by playing music.
@Tintelinus
@Tintelinus 4 месяца назад
Yup. And in the games his magic is often not offensive. Hell he also holds the triforce of courage which I would argue is the most "charisma" based part of the triforce. Basically the more I think about it the more I like the idea of Link as a Valor or Swords bard lol

I think it's cool that you can still do this with your channel. In the grand scope of things, you're still manageably small. Thanks to that, your comment sections are still relatively small, vaguely well behaved, and it's still feasible to moderate and have meaningful interactions in here. Lets enjoy it for as long as it may last! Grand popularity spells the despoiling of every comment section on youtube, after all. I really love the general positivity and the sense that everyone is trying to row this boat of roleplaying, gaming, constructive inspections of our biases, and being the best humans we can as players and DMs, in (mostly) the same direction.

While there is some racial connotation to “uppity”, it is worth pointing out that it can be used to describe any person acting above their station and also it was first used in the Uncle Remus tales which was a collection of African American folktales compiled and printed to preserve their cultural heritage. These folktales had a mix of African and Native American influences, a big melting pot due to the way the slave trade intermixed people from all over the Old and New World. It gained popularity (replacing the previous version “uppish”) at the same time there was increased talk about former slaves wanting more rights so that’s the context it got used in most often, but it wasn’t coined specifically to refer to this one issue. I think it worthwhile to know the history of the word, but also I think it a mistake to excise it completely from your vocabulary.
@Bodharas
@Bodharas 4 месяца назад
Great point. It's not exclusively a racist word. It can be used in context without the racist subtext.

"Doesnt Link play some music" Depends but yes music, magical music in paticular, is very much a staple in the Zelda franchise. So as a Zelda fan Link being lika a Valor or Swords bard makes a lot of sense.
@Keovar
@Keovar 4 месяца назад
Ocarina of Time, in particular, has a focus on magical music, but even the little celebration theme from the first NES game could work. You know, Discord has a soundboard, so I might have to look for good recordings of some of those short themes. The Miracle Max quote "It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead." is pretty good, but PCs get incapacitated too rarely to get much use out of it. I _could_ use it for undead, but I'd rather make a spliced quote from McCoy & Spock for those: "He's dead, Jim, ...but not as we know it."

I was surprised at how validated I felt when you made the offhand comment that you were behind on Campaign 3! I am also incredibly behind on Critical Role's Campaign 3, Dimension 20, and some other content that I really love and want to support. I didn't realize -- until you made your comment -- that there's this part of me that feels like a "bad fan" and a bit guilty when I'm behind on playing/watching/listening to the things that enjoy and want to support.

Genuinely love comment response videos, so nice to see you using the new year's celebrations as an excuse for doing one. ...As for Link and instruments - Off the top of my head, Link uses magical instruments, and casts what are basically spells with them, in Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask (The Ocarina), Spirit Tracks (Panpipes) and Skyward Sword (a harp, though it's... More narrative than within the gameplay there). He also has magical abilities linked to music in Windwaker and Phantom Hourglass (Where Link uses a conductor's baton), and the McGuffin in Link's Awakening is a set of magical musical instruments that acts as an alarm clock to the god who's dream you're within, though they play themselves. There's also Twilight Princess which I'm classing it separately because that's less 'magical musical abilities' and more 'wolf howl to call to the wolf embodiment of the Hero's Shade in order to get him - And, yeah, him, he's assumed to be the Link of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask) - to teach you advanced combat techniques.' I'm not sure Link ever does what I look to as the Bard's class fantasy, however, for, since his music tends to be less Bardy and more utility - He's not usually using them to manipulate people's emotions, or inspiring heroics in others, with them, or even a Zelda equivalent of Thunderbolt, Shatter, or Sleep, but instead tends to be doing things like teleporting, manipulating the flow of time, changing the direction of the wind, etc.

Another RU-vid channel I watch, Atomic Shrimp, isn't built around a single theme, but there are a number of subseries. One of them is a monthly-wrap-up of random stuff, including a "Comment Positivity" segment. I think that's really smart, because many viewers like the microfame of a shout-out, and the way to get acknowledged is by contributing in a kind and valuable way. Bozos will still send the equivalent of "bozo was here" by writing "first" or worse, but that scrolls away and the good stuff often gets responded to, and the best stuff gets read aloud. This is a great yearly version of the concept, but you might consider a monthly segment going forward as part of a variety video. Another thing I've noticed with some channels & podcasts which do a year-in-review is a "recency bias", so the 'best' includes more stuff from the last 3 months than the first 6. A monthly review tends to be more balanced.

The Anachronism comment made me chuckle. It often comes up in our sessions, that we discuss if it _feels_ fitting for the setting or not. Like: after winning a Battle in the Fighting-Pit, where the players showered with flowers and the occasional bra? This would rise a question like: "Did they have something like a bra 'back then'?" "yeah right... 'back then' when dragons and mages was a thing ^^" (PS: for those curious: bras did exist in medieval times.) (PPS: sorry for my bad grammar)

I've always thought that 5e has missed out on so much potential inspiration when it comes to drawing on historical ideas of the bard and things like awen as almost a natural force of the universe. Awen as the source of inspiration for bards is there almost a natural force of the universe, the bard almost the lips of creation though which it speaks.

I've been bingeing all of your stuff since I found you a month or so ago, and I love your content, I wish you had started 2 or 3 years ago so I could have found you when you were halfway through campaign 2, so there'd be more to watch. My only critique would be that your Demystify videos end very suddenly most of the time. You do the normal RU-vid calls to action, but in the content portion, I'm always surprised when you hit the end of your commentary. I hope it's not just me, but a smoother slope to the end might help, it never stopped me from going to your next video but it has been jarring enough that I noticed multiple times. I understand there may not be super significant things happening to reference, maybe be you could do a summation of the things we could glean off that episode and include it on screen as a bullet point list.. It could even join your "it's initiative, so here's some of the highlights" as a catchphrase. I wish I had more of an idea for you but this is definitely not my forte. I wish you the best in 2024 and I hope you get to keep doing this full time if that's what you're after. And I look forward to what you can teach us in the future.

I have to take a bit of a stand against one of the comments you highlighted. 13:10 anachronism does NOT imply historical fiction. Putting 2 things from different time periods together is still anachronistic even when its intentional and or fantastical. That can even be the intention like all the cowboy aesthetics in the mandolorian. Fantasy isnt a defense against any and all scrutiny and if an anachronism doesnt fit with the tone of a game it can still worsen the experience overall.

I must have missed the video where you talked about the bard fantasy, and maybe this comment more appropriately belongs there, but I decided to post it here anyway, partly because I'm easily distracted and will probably forget, and partly because there's a greater chance, I think, you will bump into it in a newer video. If I am mistaken feel free to delete this. Magic and music have had a connection in the minds of humanity since time immemorial. It is not a coincidence that many words we use for magic are derived from musical terms (incantation and enchantment are derivations of the Latin cantus, and charm is derived from the Latin carmen, both of these words mean song). In ancient Greek and Roman religion magic and prayer were often one and the same, and they believed that one of the ways to attract the attention of the Gods, or of spirits, natural or otherwise, was by applying song to it. One of the ways we see that is the Greco-Roman surviving prayers are almost always apply rhymes, while secular poetry (even those it itself was often sung - lyrical poetry literally means poetry accompanied by lyre) never rhymes. Music also features in many myths, Orpheus uses music to charm Hades into allowing his dead wife to return to life (an endeavor that ultimately fails), and several mythical monsters use music in order to lure people to their death. In other European mythologies magic and music are also intertwined - in the Finnish myth "Kalevala", the hero Väinämöinen is described as the Eternal Bard, and uses music to exert order over chaos, and uses his voice in song to hurt and even kill monsters. In Celtic myths the connection between music and magic is even more pronounced, with various druids described almost intermittently as bards and using music to evoke what can only be described as magical effects - Amergin Glúingel, one of the great heroes of Irish myth, uses magic to awaken the spirit of the Irish land itself, as well as to part storms and navigate ships to safety. The traditions of musicians as magic wielders persisted in several Medieval traditions, the most famous of which is the Pied Piper of Hamelin who uses music - first to lure the rats that infested Hamelin to their doom, and later, when the townspeople refuse to pay him, to steal away all the children of the town. In addition, the Pythagorean school of Greek philosophers developed the concept of 'Musica Universalis' (sometimes called Music of the Spheres, or Harmony of the Spheres) that attempted to apply mathematical principals to the movement of celestial bodies, and describing it as a gigantic musical symphony that cannot be heard audibly necessarily (a view that varied by specific philosopher) but can be felt in the soul, and that music is the harmonic basis for all life and the workings of nature. This doctrine persisted through the Middle Ages (where it adopted a Christian bend) and on until the end of the Renaissance, and has influenced many other schools of thought, including humanism. So, that fantasy of musical magic users is very ancient, and persists in many cultures, even if today some people wrongfully believe it originated in Tolkien's Silmarillion). It may not speak to everyone, but it speaks to many. Sorry for the long meandering post, hopefully someone finds it useful.

@@bernadmanny We refer to folks from other continents by those terms, too - Europeans, Africans, Asians. It's a reasonable request that folks from Central and South America may feel minimized by the usage of "American" to exclusively refer to US Citizens, and since I write scripts in advance, it doesn't take very much work for me to keep this in mind and respect their wishes. If someone watches my video and feels their identity minimized, then I'm glad they feel they can reach out to me and express it, and it seems the least I can do to try to adjust my word choice. As you point out, there are reasons why it might be tricky, and it's not like me changing my vocabulary will change large patterns of behavior. But at the very least, it will ensure someone doesn't feel ignored while watching my videos. If changing one word can have such an impact on the enjoyment of some viewers, there's no harm in trying.

For the "Mr. Rogers of D&D" comment, I am less familiar with his content compared to yours, but you might have some serious competition for that title in the form of JoCat... You still deserve at least a shot at that title though.

I've got to push back on that "American" comment. I'm a Canadian currently living in the US but I've also lived and worked all over the world, and in the 25 years I've been doing it I haven't heard anyone say "American" but refer to someone from outside the US. No one thinks it means the North or South American continents. In fact, many people from other countries in SA or NA would be needlessly insulted if called an American. I'm not telling you not to change how you speak, but this is definitely not an issue. Also, and let's be honest, because of the name, it's super hard to describe the US or a resident of the US if you are you aren't going to say "America" or "American", especially the latter. This really feels like a "some people will be offended by anything" type deal, and as your channel continues to grow literally everything you do will "upset" someone, and before you know it you'll be tying yourself up in knots trying to avoid offending that one person who is upset about everything.

Not sure what people you’ve been talking to, but it’s very common in South America to refer to both landmasses as the single continent America and all the people who live here as Americans. That’s just how their languages work, so it’s like debating whether to call the country Deutschland or Germany.

I have to respectfully disagree. This is more discussed in South America as the Monroe doctrine is studied to be a means by the USA to shape and influence the american continent. "For the Americans of the north, the only Americans are themselves." Joaquin García has made the "mi norte es el sur" drawing to challenge the cultural imperialism from the USA. There's even a joke in an Argentinian or Brazilian movie (can't remember the source) where a male character, to impress a woman he just met, tells he is an "American. A South American". This is a complex topic, but as a South American, I have to agree with my Colombian hermano.

@@fakjbf3129 neither Deutchland or Germany is a continent, so you are intentionally missing my point. If an American says "here in America X happens" nobody in Canada, Mexico, Brazil or Argentina" gets upset that "America" could also refer to either North or South America. In fact, ask anyone from those countries what they call people who is from the US and they'll say they'd call them "American". This entire "issue" is nonsense and a perfect example of how it's possibly to find at least one person who is offended by anything.

@@VytorCalxito I asked my buddy from Bogota before making my post, he thinks it's a non issue. People refer to people from Columbia as Columbians, people from Brazil as Brazilians, Mexico as Mexicans, and globally people from the US as "Americans" pretending otherwise is just silly.

@@andrewshandle I never said Germany is a continent, I was pointing out that different languages have different names for countries/locations. This also applies to drawing categorization borders differently. I can 100% guarantee you that there are millions of people who disagree with you, you can still prefer your categorization but saying that their categorization is invalid is ridiculous.

The comment about Strahd being a foul-mouthed Australian is pretty funny to me as in a D&D podcast I listen to, that's exactly what he is. Granted, "the dragon friends" is a game made up of Australian comedians, but Strahd is particularly foul-mouthed and occa
