Hey kids! Its your good buddy, Uncle Ben. In this lesson, i'm going to show you all a sweet scale pattern secret that you need in your life! This 3+4 arrangement makes it possible to play any scale across the neck in simple octave patterns that travel laterally across the board in repeating shapes. Its super easy to visualize ANY scale or mode this way! This video is a great companion to go along with the stuff you learned a couple weeks ago in This is Why You Suck at Guitar 18: You Don't Know the Major Scale: • This is Why You Suck a...
I'm also going to show you all a blistering alternate picking sequence ala Paul Gilbert to take advantage of the 3+4 trick. Its a great picking exercise that uses a combination of two of my favorite scale sequences, Straight 6's and Yngwie 3's.
For this lesson, I'm using the A minor scale (A BC D EF G A), but be sure to try out this fretboard strategy with your favorite scales and modes, too!
Using my Suhr Modern Satin + Fractal AXE FX III here. Loving this combo!
What would you like to see featured on future Weekend Wankshop episodes? Let me know in the comments!

Here is another pattern on the A minor Use the 1st finger for A Then move the 1st finger to B Then you have BCD using 1st 2nd then 4th finger Then using that pattern for BCD, EFG REPEAT THAT PATTERN FOR ALL 3 OCTAVES it is an awesome way to play the all 3 octaves in a legato way. Been shredding for roughly 20 years now myself.

Uncle Ben - you can use this same idea to blaze through a scale run with a mix of economy and alternate. Do DUD on the first three notes, then DUDU on the next 4 notes (with a slide into the 4th note).

Honestly I think this is the best guitar instructional video I have seen yet and that's saying a lot. My plan is to become completely fluid in this scheme in all keys. I have similar home grown slide up one note here and there schemes to do something similar but they lack the symmetry. They are more like "on this string hit two notes and slide a whole step on the next string hit three notes and slide...". Lol I started this video yesterday, already worked on it for an hour and I just looked up and I'm only 1:11 in.

Many modern players started to put 4 notes on a string, this breaks away from position playing and moves you around the fret board- great video

While Ive been learning my scales I've been figuring out every shape, starting from the same note , I can reach , which is also helping me learn where every note on the fretboard is at the same time , then playing all the different shapes up and down the board in random patterns making sure Im still hitting the right notes

Uncle Ben - please help. I'm a lazy, almost 50 year old, legato player and I've been trying to get motivated to become a proficient alternate picker. This lick and technique really inspired me. I've worked my way up to 144 bpm consistently so far, but I'm so torn on what fingers to use on the upper A, B, C, D, E and F and G. I know you said you wouldn't call the pinky police, but my OCD won't let me naturally switch to my 3rd finger. However, every time I try using my 3rd finger, instead of my pinky, it feels more fluid and gives me more confidence. Damn it... what to do?? Do you have thoughts on this, would you consider doing a video on the pros and cons of switching to your 3rd finger vs your pinky in the higher registers? I'm a new subscriber and I've been glued to your channel for a week now - great content! Great teachings! Thank you sir.

I do something similar like this, but with a pentatonic thing. I love the Hirojoshi Pentatonic scale for breaking out of the normal pentatonic thing. I'll either do it with the root, 4th, and 7th of the pentatonic I am working in, and use it in the middle of more standard pentatonic fair as an ear grabbing attention getter. If I don't use it within that, then I will slide down a fret that makes the most sense, sort of like the 11th fret added to the 12th position E minor Pentatonic some guitarists do. There are a few permutations of the Hirojoshi, but I use 1-b2-4-b5-min 7-root. You can move across the fretboard and it only requires two fingers. If you played 5th position A minor, it'd be: A-Bb-D-D#-G-A. (This is the first option I mention above) If you played 12th position E minor pentatonic, it'd be D#-E-G#-A-C#-D#. The easiest way to play it would be to start on the low E string at the 5th fret. Play 5th and 6th fret on the E string followed by 5th and 6th fret on the A string. After that, play the 5th fret on the D string, slide up a whole step to the 7th fret, and start the pattern over again.

Great! For practical reasons of Improvisation regular scale fits only irregular T.S. as 7/8... IMHO You have also talk about solving this problem with some rhythmical patterns and using 3+5 scale pattern ( with 7+ degree, for example, as very simple for right hande).

When I saw the title, I thought it was going to be similar to this sequence Andy Timmons does, where it's 3 pentatonic notes then 4 diatonic notes, then that pattern repeats, which is a total mind and picking hand buster for no reason other than it screws with your memory
