I came back just to tell you how revolutionary this single lesson was for me. I'm entirely self-taught so I started distorting years ago by destroying my throat 😅 I eventually figured out how to compress in the diaphragm instead, but your description of doing it in the nasal area just made something click, and now I suddenly have immensely more control over not only distortion and compression but my voice as a whole, and I don't have to yell and scream to sing Audioslave songs anymore 😄 Thank you so much!!

Thank you very much for such a detailed breakdown. You are the only one here on youtube who talks about these things like: false folds distortion is not good with mixed voice, and soft palate distortion is eye-opening I never heard about it before. I thought I found it and was happy for a week until I realized that I was constantly failing your "can you rise from the note?" check. I re-watched the video a few times and I think I found that placement now, it's not strong at all and I can't really go above my bridge with it easily (like I lose that grit as I go higher). But it doesn't require any pushing or support, just better coordination to keep it consistent. I will give it a few weeks to develop, cause it feels just like mixed voice now, meaning you find, but it's weird and not really useable, but as long as it's relaxed I think it will grow over time.

Algorithms aren't all bad!! A couple "voice lessons" searches and you showed up Sterling! I've always been a car star singer (as we all are😉). I knew I needed some fundamentals after trying to match my buddy/keyboard player note for note on jam night. I lost my voice for a bit so I figured I must be doing something wrong!! He's been singing and playing for years and didn't lose his voice. Thanks for the content! Cheers from New Brunswick, Canada

Very encouraging! I like how you explain the spaces to be very small but will open up with practice. Its hard to know you are on the right track when it doesnt feel usable at first.. but we have to keep it it. Thanks for these lessons!

That's a brilliant lesson. The last exercise with mixed distortion sounds very similar to high distorted voice of Chris Cornell 😊 keep it up man your lessons are really helpful for those of us who want to sound more aggressive when singing rock 🤘

When i try My distortion with vocal compression i don't feel any sort of pain, but my range feels limited... What should i do?
@SterlingRJackson
@SterlingRJackson Год назад
Well it’s hard to diagnose through a comment but I would imagine you’ve found a lower distortion or compression that’s limiting your range. This is the first distortion I found. Sounded very different than my typical voice as well.

Hey! What about the distortion that happens right on the break between head and chest voice? I always thought those were the false chords, but is it actually the thrid one?

is my throat supposed to burn when I do the vocal fry exercises? I'm not sure if I'm doing them right...
@SterlingRJackson
@SterlingRJackson Год назад
Burn? Ha. Not entirely sure that’s good. Hard to tell through a comment. Pain or burning is usually a sign that things aren’t working well but there is friction and vibration going on so things might be different and those sensations might not be typical things one is used to feeling.

Is it possible that i might be physically incapable of producing a fry scream? I cannot make my voice break up like that.
@SterlingRJackson
@SterlingRJackson 7 месяцев назад
Hey Jeremy. In my opinion, no, that’s not the case. Keep in mind, many of these things I teach took me years to get better at. While it seems as though one could simply follow along and do this stuff, everyone figures this stuff out at a different pace. Many of these coordinations took me months to get working as well when I was first learning them.
@Jeremy-hx7zj
@Jeremy-hx7zj 7 месяцев назад
@@SterlingRJackson I think I'm just getting discouraged because I'm having so much success with the other techniques and struggling so much with fry
@SterlingRJackson
@SterlingRJackson 7 месяцев назад
@@Jeremy-hx7zjahh I get ya. Fry is weirdly about relaxing in one place and compressing a bit in another. You’ll get there. Sometimes it happens from weird “aha” moments.

Sounds like you didn't get very far into the video. He discusses more than one way to get distortion. The first one he doesn't do often. But there are two others. The third is the one he uses the most often.
